Long-standing excellencethat delivers results
The energy system is undergoing funda-mental change for various reasons. Thesituation calls for efficient and reliablesolutions that help save costs and at thesame time tackle the new challengesthat the process of change poses.
Siemens has long anticipated thesechanges. As early as 1968 the companyintroduced a solution that helps dealwith the increasing shortage of spacein urban areas and the need for powertransmission at higher voltage levelsright into city centers: gas-insulated
switchgear (GIS).The GIS concept soon turned out highlysuccessful, and immediately set newstandards in terms of performance andreliability. Ever since, Siemens GIS haveplayed a central role in supplying powersafely, worldwide.
Today, Siemens has installed more than28,000 indoor and outdoor switch baysworldwide, and well over 300,000 bay-years of operation have been recorded.
Siemens supplies GIS for rated voltagesfrom 72.5 kV up to 800 kV. The compre-hensive product range, comprisingthe 8DN8, 8DN9, 8DQ1, and 8DR1 typesof switchgear, holds ideal solutions forall indoor and outdoor switching appli-cations up to the highest performancerates. All Siemens GIS meet the highestrequirements in terms of efficiency,
safety, and reliability. They have beendesigned for outstanding compactnessand flexibility to meet todays challeng-ing demands.
Siemens 8DN8 switchgear for upto 170 kV is characterized by modulardesign and excellent flexibility.
Siemens 8DN9 GIS for 245 kV combines theadvantages of single-phase and three-phaseencapsulation.
Outstandingly compact, Siemens 8DQ1 GIShandles 420 kV at 63 kA with a single inter-rupter unit.

An economical solution throughoutSiemens GIS have been designed witheconomic efficiency in mind. This paysoff during the entire life cycle of theswitchgear and ensures a number ofbenefits.
All switchgear arrangements can beassembled from a relatively small numberof well-conceived high-quality modules. This makes it possible to meet all individ-ual requirements while ensuring user-friendliness and easy operation.
Moreover, Siemens GIS are outstandingly
compact. Take the 8DN8 switchgear forvoltages up to 145 kV, for example: it isone of the worlds most compact GIS andfeatures a bay width of only 0.8 metersand a control cubicle that is integratedin the bay. The compact bay designlowers more than space requirements:along with the switchgears aluminum

enclosures, it saves weight, reducingload on foundations and building floors, and, consequently, associated invest-ments costs.
During operation, Siemens GIS arepractically maintenance-free. They arebuilt for an estimated service life ofmore than 50 years. No wonder, then, that the worlds first Siemens GIS bays, which were installed in Berlin in 1968,are still in operation. All new SiemensGIS types come with non-corrosiveenclosures and self-lubricating motor
drives that ensure a long service life. The main contacts of circuit breakers, disconnectors, and grounding switchesare designed for long service life withminimal maintenance. The first majorinspection is recommended to takeplace after 25 years.

Siemens high-voltage switchgear systems performreliably in extreme environmental conditions.
A common design principle of all Siemens GIS isthat compactness must not compromise accessibility.
Siemens GIS are ideally suited foruse in urban areas.
Proven reliabilitythat ensures maximum safety
Every switchgear in the Siemens 8D typerange has been thoroughly optimizedfor easy operation, accessibility, safety, and dependability. This ensures thatSiemens GIS can always be operatedefficiently and reliably. The functionalprinciple of the switchgear has beencarefully designed and tested, and it hasstood the test of time during decadesof field operation.
Environmental performanceThe external and internal electromagneticcompatibility of Siemens switchgear pre-
vents interference voltages and overvolt-ages. The gastightness of Siemens GISwith its seamless metallic enclosuresexceeds the already stringent standardsand has been verified by vigorous type-testing: the sealing system limits gas
leakage to less than 0.1 percent pergas compartment per year. Siemenshas developed outstanding expertise inthe handling of SF6gas and can ensurethat no gas is released during production, maintenance, and recycling. Moreover, the development of increasingly compactswitchgear entails a constant reductionof the required amount of gas.
Operational safety
Siemens GIS exceed the relevant IECsafety standards thanks to extraordinarilyhigh mechanical stability, high resistance
to arcing, and outstanding gas safetyfeatures. This means that Siemens GISensure the highest possible degree ofpersonal safety and can even be installedin commercial and residential buildings.
Your benefits:
