Negli ultimissimi anni in tuttolOccidente c stato un peg-gioramento generalizzato dellaqualit. Un processo pi accen-tuato partito dagli Stati Unitinel settore inanziario, poidiventato globale coinvolgendotutto il mondo ed anche lItalia,nonostante il nostro impegnoper il Made in Italy. Le cause sipossono sintetizzare da una partenella recessione che di atto haimpoverito la gente spingendolaa cercare prodotti meno costosi,e dallaltra la concorrenza asia-tica o di Paesi emergenti che hainondato il mercato con merce abasso prezzo ed a bassa qualit; ilbasso prezzo a sua volta, ha invo-gliato la gente a comprare pro-dotti scadenti che poi butta via,quasi un usa e getta. Se voglia-mo una ripresa non solo econo-mica ma anche sociale e culturaledobbiamo invertire la tendenza,

cercare la qualit in tutti i campi:nei prodotti, nellinormazione,nella scuola, nella ricerca, neirapporti umani. La qualit devediventare un modo di pensare,di sentire e di agire. Scendiamonello specico del nostro Grup-po, in cui se vogliamo le regole egli stimoli universali della qualitsi ritrovano tutti; il nostro lavo-ro, il nostro costruire, il nostrointeragire dovr sempre di pitoccare leccellenza della qualit.Ognuno di noi, producendo benie servizi, deve trovare il gustopersonale di are bene, il piaceredi veder nascere sotto le propriemani un prodotto o un servizioperetto. Ognuno di noi ha una

dignit spesso inconscia checi dice quando acciamo malequalcosa e se non lascoltiamo,a lungo andare, possiamo ancheperdere la stima in noi stessi. Maper ottenere la Qualit occorreanche un Cliente che apprezziil nostro lavoro e che sappia ri-utare il mediocre. Questo non purtroppo sempre automatico.Abbiamo ottenuto nella nostrastoria molti apprezzamenti per illavoro svolto, per la Qualit checi contraddistingue, per i risultatiottenuti e ne siamo eri perchla gente Trevi sa distinguersi;ne sono testimoni i vari ricono-scimenti ricevuti recentementeda Petreven in Sud America, da

Trevi in USA, Nuova Zelanda,Nigeria, Algeria, Angola e cos via. Abbiamo intrapreso conFTA un cammino di insegna-mento, di training, di specia-lizzazione aperto a tutti i livelli,dirigenziali e non, perch credia-mo che il sapere deve essere

Over the last years, the whole West-ern World has been aected by a gen-eral worsening in the quality. A moreoutlined worsening process started inthe USA, in the nancial sector and,then, it became global, involving thewhole world, Italy included, despite ourcommitment or the Made in Italy.Causes can be ascribed on one side to

the recession which has really impover-ished the people, by urging them to look

or less expensive products; and, on theother side, to the competition made by

Asian or Developing Countries whichooded the market with low cost and poor quality goods. he price, in itsturn, has encouraged people to buy poorquality products which are immediatelythrown away, that is, as i they weredisposable goods. I we are looking ora recovery, not only nancial, but alsosocial and cultural, we must invert thetrend, that is, looking or quality in any

eld: products, inormation, school, re-search and human relationships. Qual-ity must become a thinking, eeling andoperating attitude.Lets enter the details o our Group,where, or sure, the universal rules andspurs o quality are not lacking. Ourwork, our way o constructing and in-teracting will have to touch more andmore the excellence o quality. Each o us,by producing goods and services, must

nd her/his own personal pleasure inaccomplishing the task at the best o onesown possibilities, that is, the pleasure oseeing a perect product or a service thatis taking shape under ones own hands.

Everybody has a dignity, which is otenunconscious, and this tells us that when-ever we do something wrong and wedont listen to it, we might also lose oursel-esteem in the long run.

In order to achieve Quality, we also needa Client capable o appreciating ourwork and who can reject whats second-rate. And this doesnt come in automatic,o course. All through our company his-

I 40 nni di SoilmecTe 40 years o Soilmec

Il nonno non aveva un ruolo nella gerarchia aziendale, non ce

ne era bisogno perch nel pi puro spirito anarco-democratico

che vive in ogni romagnolo, il rispetto dellet, della leadership e

del lavoro vale ben pi di uno sterile organigramma. Assieme alle

mangiate che spesso ci oriva, aveva alcuni punti ermi; il pi

ermo di tutti era non si collauda di venerd. Quella volta, ricor-

do che eravamo molto in ritardo nella costruzione di una mac-

china battipalo MT e, approttando della casuale assenza del

nonno sollevammo lantenna anche se era un venerd. Qualche

cosa and storto e lantenna cadde con un gran botto; passato lospavento e ringraziando il cielo perch nessuno si era atto male,

la nostra sola preoccupazione era il severo giudizio del nonno

che certamente non sarebbe mancato. Arriva il luned e noi tutti

mogi, timorosi, pronti alla lavata di capo aspettiamo larrivo del

nonno. Arriva, a un giro attorno alla antenna tutta deormata poi

ci guarda tutti negli occhi e dice avlaveva det e se ne va. Bast

quello, lavorammo giorno e notte e alla ne riuscimmo a riparare

il danno e ad arrivare in tempo.

ME AJO FAT LA MI PARTA

Un giorno Davide Trevisani ci chiam tutti e ci annunci di aver r-

mato il contratto di Bandar Abbas. Ci spieg che sarebbe stato un

enorme cantiere per Trevi, mentre per Soilmec avrebbe signicato

raddoppiare la produzione ma avendo solo sei mesi a disposizio-

ne unimpresa impossibile se si pensa a progettazioni nuove, co-

struzioni da are e tempo che non cera. Termin il discorso dicendo

semplicemente me ajo at la mi parta adess asi la vosta. Il giorno

dopo lo stabilimento lavorava a pieno regime, nonostante osse il 24

giugno esta del santo patrono di Cesena. Arrivammo in tempo e il

cantiere u un successo.

UT HA MESS LA MAN IN TLA SPALA

Ero chiamato linzgnir perch cero solo io. Spesso davanti a un bic-

chiere di Sangiovese sognavamo una Soilmec del uturo, e poi, con

votazione unanime incaricavano sempre me di portare avanti le istan-

ze a Davide Trevisani. Non cera bisogno di chiedere appuntamenti,

bastava aspettare il termine del pranzo perch ogni giorno Davide

Trevisani aceva quattro passi in ofcina e l, in maniera molto sempli-

ce e inormale, si risolvevano tutti i problemi. Al termine della chiac-

chierata durante la quale Davide Trevisani voleva sapere tutto di chi

quella macchina, perch quella ralla cos sproporzionata, ecc. i

miei colleghi mi chiedevano ut ha mess la man in tla spala?. Quasi

sempre rispondevo di s e in coro mi rimandavano ut ha za chiav.

CI PIACEVA RIDERE

Non ho mai ben capito il conne ra la amiglia biologica e la ami-

Nel rattempo allinterno dellim-presa crescono nuove strutture,nella nuova oicina di Torre delMoro e dentro la baracca di legnotinteggiata con il colore blu inizianoa operare i primi tecnici progettisti:Garavelli, Ricci, Severi. Il capooicina Giorgio Pieri, CostanteCeccarelli ed altri collaboratori aiquali va il merito di aver studiatole prime nuove tecnologie e conte-stualmente progettato e costruito leattrezzature necessarie per portarea successo la nuova tecnica; tantoentusiasmo, intelligenza, capacite dedizione portavano a superarequalsiasi ostacolo.

Grandather didnt have a role in the company hierarchy, there was

no need because in the purest o democratic anarchic spirit which

lurks inside every true native o Romagna, respect or our elders, or

leadership and commitment was worth much more than a company

organogram. Together with the great easts he would oten oer us

he had certain xations; the most xed o these was no testing on a

Friday. That time, I remember, we were very late with the construction

o an MT pile driver and, making the most o the chance absence o

grandather, we raised the antenna even though it was a Friday. Any-

way something went wrong and the antenna came crashing to the

ground; once over the right and thanking our lucky stars that no-one

had been hurt, our only worry was what grandather would most

denitely have to say. Monday came and we were all downcast, ear-

ul, prepared or the reprimanding we would most certainly get when

grandather arrived. Well, he walked all around the twisted antenna,

then he looked us in the eyes and said I told you so! and walked away.

That was enough or us, we worked day and night and in the end we

managed to repair the damage and nish the job on time.

One day Davide Trevisani called us all together and announced that

he had signed the Bandar Abbas contract. He explained that it would

be an enormous site or the Trevi Group and or Soilmec it would mean

doubling its production but as we only had six months... an impossible

task i you thought o all the planning and construction to be done in an

impossibly short time. He ended his speech with just Ive done my bit,

now you do yours The next day the actory was working fat out, even

though it was 24th June, a local holiday or the patron saint o Cesena.

We got everything done in time and the site was a great success.

I was called the engineer because I was the only one. Oten sitting

with a glass o Sangiovese we would dream o Soilmecs uture, and

then, with a unanimous vote I would be the one elected to report back

to Davide Trevisani. You didnt have to ask or an appointment, you

just needed to wait until ater lunch because everyday Davide Trevisa-

ni would walk round the actory foor and there, very simply and inor-

mally any problems would be resolved. At the end o this chat in which

Davide Trevisani wanted to know everything; whose is that machine?

why is that tow hitch so over-sized? etc my work colleagues would ask

me did he put his hand on your shoulder? I nearly always answered

yes and in a chorus they would all chant hes caught you out!

We loved to laugh!

Ive never understood the dierence between your real amily and the

Soilmec amily. Just as in your real amily you dont need to draw up

an organogram because the age and position o ather, mother, son

and grandson etc. is how it is; it was quite natural and like that or us,

independent o our roles in the company, it was our ability to resolve

problems that created the actual heirarchy. One o the unniest days

was when I shared a bath in hydraulic oil with the engineer Mazzo-

tti. It really is true that we had to go home that day in our underwear

and we had to throw all our clothes away because the rancid smell o

oil would not go away, and it is equally true that on that day we were

accepted as part o the amily. Ater that the almost weekly suppers

we attended with our wives were the more serious times and, with the

copious amounts o Sangiovese that fowed, also the most creative;

anywhere would do, it was enough or us to get together or a laugh

and a ew jokes. And you only joke with those you love.

he revi Groups engi-neering sector dates back to1969 but, to tell the truth,

it was born and has been developingsince the origins o Pali revisanisactivities, meant as a maintenanceworkshop where innovative andtechnological adjustments were madeto the company site rigs and systems.Since the very beginning, the used rigs(about twenty) were wooden tripodswith mechanical winches and ther-mal engines (the so-called goats).Tey had been produced to carry outdrilled piles which extracted the soilwith a percussion drill and the con-crete was cast by means o barrows.Ater ew years, the Impresa revisa-ni was the rst company to innova-

tively change the goats, passing romdrilled piles to driven piles, Frankitype, with soil constipation perormedby a ree all hammer on a gravel capinside the casing driven into the soil. In 1962, the irst M 22 wasborn, partly developed out o theFrankignoul di Liegi, but, as a whole,it was absolutely innovative since ithad: a crawler-mounted undercar-riage driven by the rst Geco hydrau-lic engines with horizontal pistons;the Galdabini hydraulic pump withvariable delivery and big screws withhydraulic control or inclined piles; oneo the rst main sites was the San Vi-tale Quay in Ravenna, subcontractedby the Milan based company Rodio,or the execution o inclined piles toanchor the quay.In the meantime, inside the company,new structures were built into thenew workhouse in orre del Moro,and, into the wooden shed painted inblue, the rst designers-technicians

began working: Garavelli, Ricci andSeveri. Te workshop director GiorgioPieri, Costante Ceccarelli and othercollaborators had the merit o havingstudied the rst new technologies and,at the same time, o having designedand built the necessary equipment inorder to make a success out o this newtechnique; there was so much enthusi-asm, cleverness, capability and devo-tion which always succeeded in over-coming any possible obstacle.Very soon the Franki method wastransormed into the Vibro revi,with the application o hydraulic vi-brators on the top o the casing; it alsoallowed the execution o vibro-drilledinclined piles in the port o Gioiaauro, or the oundations o the beam

carrying the platorm and o the quayanchors.revi acquired a Kamo rotary in theUSA in 1963; this rig was similarto other brands like Caldwell, Wil-liams and Watson and it was used orthe execution o large diameter boredpiles, with a drilling auger assembledat the base o the squared rod drivenby the rotary and suitable or clayey,silty soils which had a mainly steadybehaviour while drilling (in presenceo soil under water layers, the then USconstructors recommended to pour ce-ment sacks and paste the soil in orderto have a partly cemented wall).In the rst site with unsteady soils, orthe execution o oundation works orthe ANAS ofces in the Bologna town

centre, the application o this tech-nique was so disastrous, due to the soillandslide beyond the temporary casingwhile drilling, that it was necessaryto stop the works and envisage a newtechnology.he solution was the new RotaryR2, applied to a Link Belt 108excavator, which used the technologyo bentonite mud which had been al-

ready tested by Icos and Rodio or theexecution o diaphragm walls in theMilan metro, but at that time theyused a bucket with an extendable shoeto discharge the soil as a drilling tool.Drilling works assured steady holewalls and no problems prevented thelaying o the reinorcement cage andthe concrete casting with a tremiepipe.But it was back to 1965 that the newtechnology o Bored piles with staticbentonite mud was born, a technologywhich set this trend both in Italy andabroad; in that Bologna site, it washence possible to obtain an averageproduction o two piles a day, with a120 cm wide diameter and at a deptho 30 m; a real success i we considerthat the production obtained by theBenoto equipment or similar butcased piles or the whole length didntreach 3-4 piles per week at that time.In the small workshop in Cesena, theconstruction o the M, the bulky rig

or Franky type piles let room to theproduction o the Rotary R3 whichwas more and more demanded bothby the company and the internationalmarket; the rst three R3s sold toSoletanche were employed in France,or the construction o the new Roissyairport and they bore the name Ro-tary revisan; this is how they werecalled in France and recorded into theSoletanche registers. Tis rig wouldhave proved to be the most sold modelin the world; R3s produced so arare over 1750 and they are still inproduction and most o the rst onesare still at work.he market expanded, techniciansgrew in number and some changedinto skilled sellers, workers increased

and the room was more and morelimited; we elt the need or an au-tonomous organization o the engi-neering sector although the relation-ships between special oundationssites - which due to adverse geologicalsurprises required an ever increasingnumber o working techniques andnew rigs and the mechanical tech-nicians who designed and producedrigs or the sites and the market wasstrengthened.Te Municipality o Cesena askedthe company to set up the new actoryas the rst industrial building in thePievesestina area; Soil Mec S.p.A.was built and, soon ater, a arm wasbought which was as close as possibleto the Motorway Bologna-Ancona;the motorway was then under con-struction and, at the time, it had notollbooth. Te Municipality promptlyissued the authorizations to urban-ize the area and or its buildability;Soil Mec built a our-span shed or

its industrial activity, a shed or thePali revisanis repair works, theY-shaped premises or the ofces, thelocker rooms and the canteen witha peculiar round vault which is stillcharacterizing our seat.On the 8th March 1969, in the presence o workers, collaborators,Authorities and the Ministry o In-dustry, On.Silvio Gava, the Bishop Monsignor Augusto Gianranceschiblessed and opened the new Soilmecactory and seat o the revi Group inCesena which, in time, would becomea meeting place or the most qualiedand worldwide entrepreneurs in theeld o Foundation Engineering.

Pilotes revi S.A.C.I.M.S.is a service companybelonging to the reviGroup which works in thebuilding sector, in the ield o specialized oundations and otherinrastructures. Pilotes reviS.A.C.I.M.S. was established in

Argentina in 1971 when it builtthe oundations or the Zarate-Brazo Largo railway complex.During the 1970s it carried outover 70 large diameter pile drilling

terrato in ambito urbano riserva sem-

pre delle sorprese. Ricordo allora alcu-

ni aneddoti curiosi che ho incontratonella mia attivit recente. Ad esempio,

la piena del ume P con lallagamen-

to dei locali dei Murazzi di Torino, con

il livello di piena prossimo alla quota

stradale e quindi con il pericolo di ri-

empimento del silo appena scavato.

Poi lincatenamento di Consuelo atti-

vista verde proveniente dallArgentina

per tentare di salvare le betulle di via

Benedetto Croce a Brescia, traserite a

un vivaio per evitarne labbattimento.

Sempre a Brescia, poi, lo slittamento di

un getto per larrivo di una tappa del

Giro dItalia (in via Benedetto Croce), e

la partenza della mitica Mille Miglia a

pochi passi dal cantiere San Domeni-

co. Non posso dimenticare linstalla-

zione delle apparecchiature e dellim-

pianto elettromeccanico TreviPark a

Stoccolma nellinverno 2002-2003, alla

resca temperatura di -17 C. A ronte

delle numerose esperienze positive,

inne, vale la pena sottolinearne una

negativa, tra laltro delle pi recenti: il

parcheggio DAzeglio di Bologna in via

di completamento. Questo TreviPark,

inatti, ha atto segnare un record, e

cio il tempo massimo mai impiega-

to nellesecuzione di un TreviPark che

dopo oltre due anni di ermo archeolo-

gico verr completato in poco meno di

4 anni, contrariamente a quello di Mi-

lano Adda-Cornalia realizzato in poco

pi di 10 mesi.

The construction o an underground

car park in urban areas always saves

surprises. I remember some curious

anecdotes I have experienced in my

recent activities. For example, the food

o the river Po, with the fooding o

the rooms o the Murazzi premises in

Turin, with the food level next to the

road one and thereore with the risk

that the silo, which had just been dug,

would have been lled up. Then the sel-

chaining o Consuelo a green activist

rom Argentina aimed at saving the

birch trees along Via Benedetto Croce

in Brescia, that were transerred to a

garden centre in order to prevent their

all. Then, still in Brescia, there was the

postponement o a jetting work due to

the arrival o a stage o the cycling Tour

o Italy, the so-called Giro dItalia (in Via

Benedetto Croce), and the departure

o the legendary Mille Miglia rally near

the San Domenico site. I cant orget

the installation o the TreviPark elec-

tromechanical equipment and plant

in Stockholm, back to the winter 2002-

2003, with a cool temperature o -17

C. Given the many positive experiences,

nally, it is worth pointing out also a

negative one, and, whats more, one o

the latest: the DAzeglio car park in Bo-

logna, at the stage o completion. This

TreviPark, has indeed set a record, that

is, the maximum time ever spent in the

execution o a TreviPark since, ater twoyears o standstill due to archaeological

reasons, it will be completed in less than

4 years, unlike that o Adda-Cornalia in

Milan, which has been executed in little

more than 10 months.

I primi TreviPark a Cesena/Te frst reviPark in CesenaI primi Trevipark costruiti a Cesena risal-

gono al 1994. Per la realizzazione della

ondazione del parcheggio si utilizz

una resa verticale della Soilmec (la stes-

sa usata per la cinturazione dellinquina-

mento delle alde, provocata dai prodot-

ti tossici della abbrica ACNA di Cengio).

Questa macchina doveva lavorare, con

regolare permesso, a ciclo continuo di

24 ore senza interruzione. Verso le ore

23 del primo giorno di lavoro, per, la

macchina incontr un banco di ghiaia

provocando un livello di rumore molto

alto, impedendo di conseguenza il ri-

poso dei residenti limitro al cantiere.

Neanche a arlo apposto, a quellora pas-

sava il Presidente Davide Trevisani con

dei bombolonicaldi per i lavoratori. Ac-

cortosi delleccessiva rumorosit prodot-

ta, mi chiese di traserire a nostre spese

tutti i residenti coinvolti nel disagio al

vicino Hotel Alexander. Una decina di

residenti accolse linvito e li traserimmorapidamente in albergo. Altra curiosit:

alla proondit di scavo di 16 metri u

rinvenuta una quercia di epoca romana,

ben conservata; evidentemente 2000

anni a il livello di Cesena in quellarea

era pi basso.

La realizzazione dei TreviPark in zona Bar-

riera, nel 1999, provoc malcontento ra

i residenti per il necessario taglio di un

pino marittimo. Si costitu quindi il comi-

tato salva pinoche organizz la listatura

a lutto di tutti i 400 alberi di Viale Carduc-

ci. LAmministrazione Comunale organiz-

z un reerendum cittadino per valutare

il gradimento dellopera, il primo in I talia

per la modalit di espressione di voto

che avveniva toccando con un dito lo

schermo di un computer. La maggioran-

za dei votanti si espresse negativamente

(di atto i residenti della zona), ma non

u per raggiunto il quorum necessario

(votarono solo l8% contro il minimo di

51%). Furono cos realizzati due TreviPark

per complessivi 184 posti auto, in sostitu-

zione dei 30 posti preesistenti. Molti dei

residenti che votarono contro i parcheg-

gi sono oggi nostri aezionati clienti!

In Piazza Fabbri, poi, u realizzato, sem-

pre nel 1999 un TreviPark per residenti.

Allinizio dei lavori gironzolava attorno al

cantiere una signora con lombrello cheapriva quando vedeva qualcuno con gli

occhiali. Andava ripetendo che avremmo

trovato un tesoro, un mosaico! Dai son-

daggi e dagli accertamenti archeologici

eseguiti con la Soprintendenza Archeo-

logica non era emerso nulla. Invece, alla

proondit di 181 cm cominciarono ad

apparire alcuni sassolini quadrati bianchi

e neri: il pi importante mosaico scoperto

in Romagna di epoca imperiale, volume-

trico in bianco e nero, composto a 96.000

tessere, stava venendo alla luce. Il mosai-

co, strappato e restaurato, oggi a bella

mostra di s nel salone comunale, meta

di aascinati visitatori. Durante gli scavi,

inoltre, ece visita al cantiere il Soprinten-

dente dellEmilia Romagna, la dottoressa

Calvani, che spostando con un piede un

sasso scopr un rammento di ceramica

adriatica che riportava Ercole eraclito

(con la clava in mano). Raccogliendo il

rammento pianse dallemozione.

The rst TreviPark in Cesena dates back to

1994. The parking oundation was execut-

ed by a Soilmec vertical cutter (the same

used to wall the ground water polluted by

the toxic products escaped rom the ACNA

actory in Cengio). Thanks to a special au-

thorization, this rig had to work on a con-tinuous 24-hour cycle, without interrup-

tions. However, at about 11 pm o the rst

working day, the rig encountered a gravel

bank, hence causing a very high noise level,

such as to prevent the rest o the residents

living by the site. President Davide Trevisa-

ni happened to be passing in the site just at

that moment, to bring warm cream pus

to the workers. By immediately realizing

the excessive noise produced in the site,

he asked me to transer, at our expenses,

all the residents involved in the discomort

to the nearby Hotel Alexander. A dozen

residents welcomed the invitation and

they were quickly transerred to the hotel.

Another curiosity: at the digging depth o

16 meters, a well preserved oak rom the

Roman period was ound; it was clear that

2000 years ago the level o Cesena in that

area was lower.

The Trevipark execution in the Barriera

area, in 1999, caused discontent among

the residents or the necessary cutting o

a maritime pine. A Save the Pine Com-

mittee was thereore ounded, which

organized the mourning list or all 400

trees which were along Viale Carducci. The

Town Council organized a city reerendum

to evaluate the popularity o the work, the

rst one in Italy with that voting system,

since it was by touching a computer screenwith just a nger. The majority o voters

expressed themselves negatively (mainly

the residents o the area), but the necessary

quorum was not however reached (only

8% voted against, versus a minimum o

51%). Two TreviParks were thus executed,

oering a total o 184 parking spaces

which replaced the ormer 30 spaces avail-

able. Many residents who voted against

the car park have now become our loy-

alist customers! Again, in 1999, in Fabbri

Square, another TreviPark or residents was

built. At the beginning o the works, there

was a woman always holding an umbrella

who used to wander around the site; she

used to open her umbrella whenever she

saw someone wearing glasses. She kept

on repeating that we would have ound a

treasure, a mosaic! Surveys and archaeo-

logical investigations conducted by the

Archaeological Supervision didnt reveal

anything. But, at a depth o 181 cm, some

square black and white pebbles began to

appear: it was the most important mosaic

o the imperial era ever discovered in Ro-

magna, a volumetric, black and white mo-

saic, made o 96,000 tiles was coming to

light! The mosaic, torn and restored, today

shows o in the municipal hall, admired

by ascinated visitors. Moreover, during the

excavations, the Superintendent o EmiliaRomagna, Dr. Calvani, visited the site, and,

by accidentally moving a stone with a oot,

she discovered a ragment o Adriatic pot-

tery with the image o Hercules Heraclitus

(with a club in his hand) painted on it. She

wept or the emotion while she was picking

up the ragment.

E poi c la passioneper questo lavoro; primadi essere presidente sono, erimango, un ingegnere. In
