Southwark College offers a wide range ofcourses to suit all learners. Our qualificationsstart at Entry Level and you can progressthrough to Level 3 which are A Levelequivalent qualifications that will allow youto go to University if you wish to.

*There are no formal entry requirements for this course but applicants will be required to demonstrate literacy and numeracy skills to Level 2 and pass an interview with a course tutor.

Money matters

New Bursary Fund and EducationalMaintenance Allowance (EMA)There is now a new bursary fund for 16-18year old students on low income. ExistingEMA students may be entitled to somecontinued payments. You will have tomaintain an excellent level of attendance andbehaviour and hand work in on time. Pleaseask Customer Services for more information.

Help with childcare costs Southwark College provides two nurseries withsubsidised childcare places for learners.Depending on your circumstances, your childcould be eligible for a free nursery place.However, all learners are required to pay asmall termly registration fee regardless of theirincome. Please talk to one of our CustomerService Team to find out more.

Other financial supportYou could also be eligible for 30% discount on travel inLondon if you study for more than 14 hours per week. Alllearners are able to join the Student Union. Your StudentUnion card will give you a range of discounts inlocal/national shops and restaurants. Whatever your ownfinancial circumstances, please do not hesitate to ask usabout the range of support available. Students with learning difficulties and/or disabilitiesIf you have a learning difficulty ordisability our aim is to offer you any helpand support that you may need. Everyapplicant who declares a learningdifficulty or disability will be offered aconfidential interview to assess theirneeds and to find out what support theCollege can offer. Our Centres areaccessible via ramps and a lift forlearners with physical disabilities.

Some learners do not like to speakopenly about their needs. Others arenot aware that they are able to accesssupport services. We have specialists athand who are keen to help you. Thisincludes expertise in dyslexia, supportwith communication skills and careservices. We pride ourselves in aimingto ensure accessibility for all.

During the Ofsted inspection in March 2010,inspectors reported:“Learners receive good care, guidance and support.”

Work rest and playFacilities and ServicesSouthwark College has over 600computers for you to use to support yourstudies. Our Learning and DevelopmentCentres have a wide selection of books,newspapers, journals, magazines, DVDsand on-line resources to help your studies.Our experienced staff are always on handto help you to find what you need.

You are also welcome to make good useof our hair and beauty salon and our gymfacilities. You will also find opportunities toget involved in a range of sports such asfootball and basketball.

Child CareThe College runs a nursery service forchildren aged 1 – 5 years old. Ourchildcare practitioners are fully qualifiedand take pride in looking after your child ina safe, friendly and stimulating learningenvironment. Our nurseries have bothbeen graded as “Good” by Ofsted EarlyYears inspectors. Depending on yourcircumstances your child may be eligiblefor a free nursery place. However, allstudents are required to pay a small termlyregistration fee regardless of their income.Please talk to one of our CustomerServices Advisors to find out more.

Social LifeOur newly refurbished common roomsare ideal places to chill out, relax, makenew friends and take a break from yourstudies. Whether you want to practiceyour table football, surf the net on ourApple Macs or just talk to friends, thenew common rooms are great places tohang out.

Canteens and CafésWe have canteens at all of our Collegesites that offer a range of hot and coldfood, including healthy options. AtBermondsey you can even try thecatering restaurant, Hardings, if you feellike treating yourself! We also have abistro-style café at Waterloo.

If you are 16 – 18 and have homestudent status then you will not haveto pay course fees to study on any ofour full-time programmes. Please note,though, that you may have to pay amaterials fee for some courses.

Students aged 19 and over will have topay a registration and exam fee butdepending on your circumstances wemay be able to pay your course fees foryou. If you are in receipt of the followingbenefits, we may be able to help:

As there are some exceptions, youare advised to check with ourAdvisors when you apply. You mustprovide original and current evidenceof the benefit you are receiving whenyou enrol. Please speak to a memberof our Customer Service Team if youneed more information.

How do I apply?

What happens after we havereceived your application?

We will confirm that we have received yourapplication and will then invite you in to theCollege to view our facilities and to talk to amember of our lecturing staff.

If it is a while since you have studied or ifyou don’t exactly meet the entryrequirements for the course, then please dostill apply. We can arrange for you to take ashort assessment before your interview sothat the course tutor will be able to helpyou to decide if the course is right for you.

If your interview is successful then you willbe made a conditional or unconditionaloffer. Your offer letter will explain if thereare any conditions that you will need tomeet. Usually this will involve successfullycompleting the course that you arecurrently studying.

Once you have received an offer of a placeyou will be invited to enrol over thesummer. Please note that your place on thecourse is not guaranteed until you haveenrolled, even if you have received anunconditional offer, so please come to enrolas soon as you are able to.

If you are in employment and interestedin gaining further qualifications, thenyou could benefit from our extensiverange of work-based learningprogrammes. We offer a wide range ofcourses that will allow you to achieverecognition and qualifications for thework you already do.

Our experienced lecturers andassessors will visit you in the work-place to discuss the most appropriatequalification for you. And what’s more,for most courses, the assessment willalso take place in the work place andwill be based on the work you carryout on a day to day basis.

Our Access to Higher Educationcourses will prepare you for entry toUniversity. These courses focusparticularly on supporting you todevelop the study skills andindependent learning techniques thatyou will need to succeed at University.Our experienced lecturers will workclosely with you to ensure that youreceive all the support you need.

If you do not have qualifications suchas A Levels or a National Diploma thatare traditionally required for University,or if it is some time since you studiedfor a qualification, then an Accesscourse will provide you with theconfidence and skills you need toachieve your potential.

Certificate in teaching in the lifelong learning sector (CTLLS) Level 3

Part time: 2 Evenings per week

Group: All Learners Campus: WaterlooStart Date: Sep 2012 Duration: 20 Weeks

This course follows on from PTLLS and looks at theareas covered in the PTLLS course in greater depth.Acquiring this qualification also qualifies you forAssociate Teacher, Learning & skills status (ATLS) andis your licence to teach on courses with pre designedcurricula. You will need access to 30 hrs of teachingpractice in an institution type recognised by theexamining body.

Content:This course explores in depth the subjects of teachingpractice incorporating theory and practice of teaching,principles of learning, your professional role andresponsibilities, confidence, communication andinterpersonal skills. Students will be expected tocomplete a number of written assignments as well asundergo a formal teaching observation as part of thiscourse. Teaching observations are extended to 30hours.

Entry criteria:You must show that you have a genuine interest in thechosen subjects and be able to produce basic writtenrecords and estimates. This means that no previousqualifications or experience are necessary, but youwill need to pass the college English assessment atEntry Level 2 (or hold the equivalent), or pass aninterview with a College lecturer.

Next step:A full level one qualification in general Construction orin a specialist area.


Preparing to teach in the life longlearning sector (PTLLS) Level 3

Part time: 1 Evening per week


This is the first step towards gaining qualified teacherstatus. Successful students may continue on to ourCTLLS course and eventually the DTLLS course,which would ideally incorporate their subjectspecialism. No previous teaching experience isrequired.

Content:This course is an introduction to teaching practiceincorporating theory and practice of teaching,principles of learning, your professional role andresponsibilities, confidence, communication andinterpersonal skills. Students will be expected tocomplete a number of written assignments as well asundergo a formal teaching observation as part of thiscourse. Ideally you should have decided on thesubject you would like to teach in the future andalready possess or be working towards a qualificationin that subject.

Entry criteria:You will need to show you have reached Level 2 inEnglish and Maths, and to attend an interview with acollege tutor.

Next step:CTLLS course and qualified Associate Teacher,Learning & Skills status (ATLS).


Teaching Assistant Certificate Level 2


This course meets the needs of those wishing to workor already working in a role supporting the teachingand learning of pupils. The qualification will confirmcompetence in the role to standards required by theTeacher Development Agency.

Content:Nine mandatory units two optional units relating tosupporting learners and their learning. For exampleChild and Young Person Development, Safeguarding,Communication with children, young people andadults.

Entry criteria:You will need literacy and numeracy skills to be ableto complete the qualification successfully. You willneed a paid or voluntary placement in a school.

Next step:Higher level qualifications in the field of education.

Preparation for Academic StudiesLevel 2

Group: 19+ Campus: WaterlooStart Date: Sep 2012 Duration: 1 Year

You have English and Maths skills at Level 1, yourambition is to study for a degree, and are not quiteready to take on an Access course yet. This coursewill give you a thorough grounding in the skills youneed to be successful at Level 3 and beyond.

Content:Students will improve their literacy, numeracy and ICTskills as well as increasing their general study skills toa standard where they are ready to progress to LevelThree qualifications. The topics you study will covertopics that reflect the programmes learners wish toprogress to in the future.

Entry criteria:No previous qualifications or experience arenecessary, but you will need to show you have Mathsand English skills at Level 1 through collegeassessment, to have an interview with a collegelecturer and to demonstrate commitment anddedication to the course.

Next step:Access courses or other Level Three courses in thefollowing year.


Access to Social Work Level 3


This intensive one year course provides you with theopportunity to learn about the social work sector anda career as a social worker, in particular. You will havethe chance to improve your study skills, including yourwritten English and research techniques, in order togain the confidence and experience you need tosuccessfully apply to University.

Content:The course covers a broad spectrum of subjectsincluding: Sociology (including health, equality andfamily), Psychology (including research methods),Social Work (including values, ethics and the workplace), Law and Practice, English, IT and Study Skills.Careers advice and tutorials are available andincluded. Additional maths or English support isavailable if required.

Entry criteria:You must pass the college Maths and Englishassessment at Level 2 grade. You must also attend aninterview with a College tutor. Students with a pre-Access qualification will need to show achievement atLevel 2. Students should demonstrate maturity and aninterest in and aptitude for Social Work, to includesome experience of working in Social Work e.g. on awork placement. You must be at least 19 years old.

Next step:A university degree in Social Work or related course inSocial Sciences. The college has special progressionlinks with Goldsmiths, University of London andGreenwich University.

Access to LawLevel 3


This intensive one year course provides you with theopportunity to learn about the key aspects of Law andis aimed at those individuals who wish to progress toUniversity to study law-related courses. You will havethe chance to improve your study skills, including yourwritten English and research techniques, in order togain the confidence and experience you need tosuccessfully apply to University.

Content:This course includes: Introduction to the English LegalSystem, Criminal Law, Contract Law, Study Skills.

Entry criteria:You must show that you have the potential to achieveA-C grades in GCSEs from your past results, record ofachievement, or from a written assessment. Thismeans that no previous qualifications or experienceare necessary, but you will need to pass the collegeMaths and English assesment at Level 2, pass aninterview with a College lecturer and demonstratecommitment and dedication to your subject.

Next step:A degree or foundation degree in Law, Humanities,Social Science, Business or another related degree.


Access to Youth and Community Work Level 3


This intensive one year course provides you with anintroduction to the key issues and concepts in thisfield in the UK today. You will have the chance toimprove your study skills, including your writtenEnglish, Maths and research techniques, in order togain the confidence and experience you need tosuccessfully apply to University.

Content:The programme will include study of and assignmentson topics relevant to the area such as SocialStratification and Inequalities, Sociology of the Family,Urban Regeneration, Race in British Society, theHistory of Social Policy and PsychologicalPerspectives and Pro and Anti Social Behaviour. Youwill also have weekly tutorial and set targets on yourindividual learning plan with your personal tutor.

Entry criteria:No previous are necessary, but you will need to passthe College Maths and English assessment at Level 2,have an interview with a college lecturer anddemonstrate commitment and dedication to thesubject. You also need to have some evidence ofexperience in this field, and to continue gettingexperience in this area while you are on the course ifyou want to get onto a degree programme in Youth,Community or Social Work.

Next step:A degree or foundation degree in Youth & CommunityWork or other related degree courses, such as SocialWork Sociology/Social Policy Criminology or Psychology.

Access to Nursing Level 3

Group: 19+ Campus: BermondseyStart Date: Sep 2012 Duration: 1 Year

This course has been designed to provide newopportunities for adults looking to return to educationand pursue a degree or higher national diploma innursing. It is awarded by the Open College Network.This intensive one year course provides you with theopportunity to learn about the health care sector andnursing in particular. You will have the chance toimprove your study skills, including your writtenEnglish and research techniques, in order to gain theconfidence and experience you need to successfullyapply to University.

Content:This course includes: Health and Culture, Anatomyand Physiology, Nursing Studies, Science andCounselling Skills as well as English, Maths and IT.The course is taught through lectures, seminars,group discussions, laboratory demonstrations, groupand independent presentations.

Entry criteria:You must pass the college Maths and Englishassessment at Level 2 grade. You must also attend aninterview with a College tutor. Students with a pre-Access qualification will need to show achievement atLevel 2. The desire and aptitude to enter Nursing as acareer is essential and Nursing practical experiencewould be useful. This course is for students aged 19and over.

Next step:A degree or foundation degree in nursing or furtherstudy on another health-related course.

Access to MathsLevel 3


This course has been designed to provide newopportunities for adults looking to return to educationand pursue a degree or higher national diploma inmaths, business or computing. It is awarded by theOpen College Network.

Content:The course modules are: Core Mathematics,Statistics, Discrete Mathematics, Vectors, NumericalMethods, Computing and Study Skills. The coursestructure includes lectures, tutorials, workshops,independent study, oral presentations, and access tocomputer facilities. Additional learning support inEnglish and Maths is available if required.

Content:The course covers: English, Maths, Science (GCSElevel), Teaching Studies, Introduction to IT, History,Literature and Study Skills. Thiscourse is conducted through lectures, group work,individual work, seminars, outside visits, teachingplacements, oral presentations, assignments,independent and guided study. Additional learningsupport is available if required.

Entry criteria:You must pass the college Maths and Englishassessment at Level 2 grade. You must also attend aninterview with a College tutor. Mathematics GCSE is an intensive resit course,completed in one year. It can be taken by 16-18 yearold students as well as mature students. Please notethat it is not a beginners' course - you must have theknowledge and understanding to cope with GCSE levelMaths and students should have a grade D. Classesare taught in the day, normally alongside a Level 3vocational programme. Mathematics is also availablein the evening for part time students. All courses takeplace at the Waterloo Centre and start in September.

Content:Mathematical skills are important to us all, andthrough the GCSE programme you will develop theskills by learning algebra, geometry, trigonometry andstatistics, as required by the syllabus. You will learnthrough formal teaching and individual work onproblems and exercises.

Entry criteria:If you are 16-18 years old you must show the potentialto achieve A-C grades in GCSEs from your pastresults, record of achievement, or a writtenassessment. This means you will have achieved atleast a grade D in GCSE maths. Mature students mustshow potential, motivation and commitment, and maybe advised to start with a Basic Numeracy or pre-GCSE course. You should complete the Collegeapplication form and attend an interview.

If you are 16 – 18 and have home student statusthen you will not have to pay course fees tostudy on any of our full-time programmes.Please note, though, that you may have to paya materials fee for some courses.

You may want tofollow a particular career path and use this as thefirst rung on the ladder, or you might just want tostudy something new that interests you. As youwill see, there are a range of courses to suit allinterests and abilities. All courses lead tonationally recognised qualifications and generateGCSE points when you achieve the qualification.

The courses are available during the week aslink courses with your school and you willneed to be committed to the course for oneyear. You must have the agreement of yourschool before applying.

Youcould apply to stay at SouthwarkCollege to take higher levelvocational qualifications when youleave school, or you could usethese points to stay at school totake A Levels or apply for anApprenticeship. Whatever youchoose to do, you will have had theopportunity to gain new skills andknowledge that you will be able touse when you enter the work placeor undertake further training.

How do I apply?If you are interested in studying atSouthwark College you will need toapply through your school. You willbe asked to attend an interview atCollege and may also be invited toattend a taster session so that youcan look around the Centre and besure that you have chosen thecourse that is right for you.
