    Optimal for Dewatering of Slag and Mill ScalesWashing effluents coming from the steel industry withhigh flows and a low to moderate content of well definedsolids like mill scales and slag has been proven optimalfor the spiral dewaterer. In the sedimentation tank thewash water is reclaimed and sent back to the washingoperation again. The solids are removed by anddewatered in the discharge spiral and can be sent to re-cycling if this is considered of value.

    Robust Design for Reliable OperationLike the spiral classifier the spiral dewaterer consistsbasically of an open tank for sedimentation of solids anda transportation spiral for removal and dewatering of thesettled product.All machines have equal spiral diameter, 600 mm. Thespiral flights are welded directly to the spiral shaft. Theflight wear shoes are made of high chrome iron and arebolted to the flights. The submerged bearing assembly isof grease purged type and is lubricated every secondweek. The bearing pack can be disassembled andreplaced without lifting the spiral out of the tank. Hydrau-lic spiral lifting device can be supplied as an option.The drive consists of an electric motor, V-rope drive andspeed reducer for reliable operation at low spiral speedsneeded for low wear and improved dewatering.

    Principle of operation

    Metso Spiral Dewaterer consists basically of an opentrough with arrangements for collection of theproducts.The inlet flow is evenly spread out through a feeddistributor.Coarse material settles and is continuously removedby means of the transport spiral. The material willbe dewatered by drainage in the upper part of thespiral before discharge. The discharge launder forthe dewatered material is easily adjusted betweentwo positions, allowing alternative discharge intotwo separate bins.

    Large pool area for high flow applicationsTypically for the spiral dewaterer is that the tank area islarger than for the spiral classifiers. This enables thesemachines to take on high flows with limited solids con-tent, applications very common for different Industrialwashing effluents. With the addition of in-clined lamellaplates in the tank this gives settling areas from 8 up to100 m2 and flow rates up to 1600 m3/h.

    Oil skimmer as optionIn some applications the feed contains oil and grease.These are floating products reporting to the clear wateroverflow. A special designed oil skimmer can be suppliedfor removal of these floating products.

    Product Presentation

    Easy to Install and MaintainThe Spiral Dewaterer is generally delivered as a pre-fabricated unit complete with stairs, handrails and plat-forms. The larger units may in some cases be deliveredin parts for erection on site.After erection on a levelled foundation only power andpipes need to be connected.The discharge launder for the dewatered product is thenpositioned over the discharge bin or bins as the laundercan be adjusted in two positions.

  • 4BearingsThe submerged bearing assembly is of greasepurged type and is lubricated every second week. Thelower end bearing pack can be disassembled andreplaced without lifting the spiral out of the tank. Theupper end of the spiral is provided with lower endbearing pack can be disassembled and replacedwithout lifting the spiral out of the tank. The upperend of the spiral is provided with a spherical rollerbearing in a standard bearing housing.

    Service platformsOptional service platforms and stairs can beprovided to suit local conditions.

    Lamella plate packsIn order to increase the sedimentation area of thetank, the spiral dewaterer can be supplied withlamella plate packs. The plates are arranged in twosteel frames, easy to remove if required.

    Hydraulic spiral lifting deviceIf discharge of solids is intermittent whilest the feedis continuous, a hydraulic spiral lifting device can besupplied as an option.

    Lower shaft end bearing assembly

    Spiral Dewaterer Model - SDMetso Spiral Dewaterer Model SD is a robustevolution of the spiral classifier for reliableoperations in mill scale handling.

    The Spiral Dewaterer with special designed spiraland enlarge pool area is able to handle large flows ofeffluents, offering a well dewatered mill scaleproduct and a clear overflow (typically 100 ppm).
