Unit 1 Animal PowerThe Hippo and the TortoiseAThis is a made-up story about three animal buddies. It started in West Africa

in January 2006. An enormous wind had swept a couple of elephants down

a river into the Atlantic Ocean.

BTillögur að svörum: 1 Local people discovered the baby hippo / him. 2 He was lost and alone and in trouble. / He couldn’t get out of the ocean / water. 3 Owen / It was the name of one of his rescuers. 4 (He was taken) to a sanctuary for wild animals in Mombasa. 5 He was frightened and needed to feel safe. 6 He was very big. His name means ‘old man’. He was 130 years old. 7 He wasn’t interested in a baby hippo. Perhaps he was frightened too.

Or perhaps he just wanted to be alone. 8 They found the hippo and the tortoise / Owen and Mzee together. 9 He eats tortoise food and he ignores hippo calls.10 He has become friendly and playful / wants to play.11 Mzee stretches his neck out so that Owen can lick it. They are together all the

time. They cuddle in their sleep.

C1 down a river2 He was in trouble.3 He needed to feel safe.4 Mzee must have changed his mind.5 They are together all the time, even in their sleep!
