THuRSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2015

QUOTE OF THE

DAYSheena Bora and Aarushi Talwar’s cases : media’s presumption of guiltWho has access to newspaper and television, the verdict has been delivered. Indrani Mukerjea, wife of media magnate Peter Mukerjea, is evil person-ified. She had killed her daughter Sheena (who is Sheena’s father is still a matter of conjecture) with the help of two accomplices; tried to get rid of the body by dumping it on a deserted stretch on the out-skirts of Mumbai; and even attempted to poison her son Mikhail — ostensibly because of property and the daughter’s affair with Peter’s son Rahul. Even before investigations are over; without a single word of the charge sheet being written, and long before the case comes up for hearing, the die has been cast. And, what helped the Everyman arrive at such defi-nite conclusions? The media, which claims to be a stickler for facts, and the purveyor of truth. As of now, the police are farthest from nailing the case. What is on display, however, is their incompetence. In 2012, when they were informed by the locals of the Gagode Budruk village in Pen about a partially decomposed body, they did visit the site, but didn’t bother to file an FIR and conduct proper investiga-tions, though there were tell-tale signs of foul play. There is still no forensic evidence to prove that the body was Sheena’s. Yet, systematic leaks from the police have been lapped up by information-hungry reporters, who then duly pass it on to the higher-ups, who, in turn, dress up facts for mass consumption. Who doesn’t love a scandal? It ensures readership; boosts TRP, and with every new revelation — how-ever bizarre and conflicting it might be — salacious gossip becomes the driving force of journalism. This is not to say that Indrani is above suspicion. But, at this point, the media spectacle is framed by the presumption of guilt — a dangerous idea. One that can influence the course of investigations and colour the opinion of the judiciary. It has happened before. During the investigations and the trial of the dou-ble murder case of Aarushi and Hemraj. Back then, like now, the media-conducted trial had proved to be extremely damaging for Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, the dentist parents of Aarushi. Back then, like now, something vital, something integral to the existence of society was missing — The presumption of in-nocence — without which institutions will crumble and the human collective that goes by the name of civilisation will lose direction. You either get North Korea or chaos. Take your pick. As a serving judge put it: “The presumption of innocence is fundamen-tal to anything that claims to call itself a civilised society.”

India has added 52 million Internet users in first six months of the year, taking the total user base to 352 million as on June 30, 2015, industry body IAMAI today said. Interestingly, 213 million (over 60%) users accessed the worldwide web through mobile devices. “Internet (in India) has reached an inflection point. The consolidated numbers af-firm the fact that Internet in India has now become inclusive, which augurs well for the industry and society at large,” the Internet and Mobile Associ-ation of India (IAMAI) said in a statement. The number of Internet users has grown over 26% from 278 million in October 2014. The number of mo-bile Internet users has also grown about 40% from 159 million users in October last year. “The Inter-net in India took more than a decade to move from 10 million to 100 million and 3 years from 100 to 200 million. However, it took only a year to move from 200 to 300 million users. Clearly, Internet is mainstream in India today,” it said.

Pac-er Ishant Sharma broke into the bowlers’ top-20, while Cheteshwar Puja-ra entered the top-20 of batsmen’s list as Indian cricketers gained signifi-cantly in the latest ICC Test rankings following their first series triumph in Sri Lanka in 22 years. “Cheteshwar Pujara has broken into the top 20 of the ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen for the first time in his career fol-lowing the conclusion of

the Colombo Test, which India won by 117 runs to clinch the series 2-1,” the ICC said in a state-ment. The 27-year-old batsman carried his bat in the first innings and returned unbeaten on 145 not out, his seventh ca-reer century, which was the cornerstone of India’s first innings score of 312. For this performance, Pujara has been reward-ed with a jump of four places, which puts him in 20th position. Pujara is now the second India batsman to feature in the top 20, but following Vi-rat Kohli’s drop to 11th (down by one place), the

fifth-ranked side has no batsman inside the top 10. Apart from Pujara, there were few other mid-dle-order batsmen who made significant contri-butions to India’s cause at the Singhalese Sports Club, which, in turn, have helped them to head in the right direction. Ro-hit Sharma has moved up two places to 48th, Rav-ichandran Ashwin has gained five places and is now in 50th spot, while Amit Mishra, who scored 59 in the first innings and featured in a 104 runs eighth wicket partnership with Pujara, has vaulted 56 places to 91st.

There was some more good news in the offing for India’s Test captain Virat Kohli as he was de-clared the No 1 ranked batsmen in T20 Inter-nationals according to ICC’s latest rankings. In a basement room at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the India captain ad-dressed a last press con-ference of the Test series. Virat Kohli looked tired after leading the team in a match they almost lost because his bowlers con-

ceded 200-plus runs in the last session on day four. It was in sharp con-trast to Adelaide, where Kohli had led India for the first time. There he had almost tasted victory, crusading alone, on the might of his bat. In Syd-ney, he found out that this job wasn’t going to be so

With the Centre doubling the quota of Haj pilgrims from Gujarat, more than 6,500 people are slated to travel to Mecca from the state this year. The first flight for Haj pilgrims will depart at 4.10pm on Wednesday from terminal 3 of the Sardar Vallabh-bhai Patel internation-al Airport to Medina in Saudi Arabia. Elaborate arrangements have been made by the Haj commit-tee of Gujarat as well as the airports authority of India (AAI) at terminal 3 for pilgrims as well as their relatives. Separate parking and tent facilities have been set up to facil-itate the pilgrims. Also, temporary immigration counters have been set up at the terminal. Until last year, 3,536 pilgrims were allowed to travel to Mec-ca from Gujarat. For this year, the number will be

6,272 thanks to substan-tial seats being released from the reserved cate-gory. This arrangement is applicable for this year. Mohammed Ali Qadri, chairman of Gujarat Haj committee said, “Around 6,750 pilgrims will be travelling in batches to Mecca from Gujarat in-cluding those travelling on their own.” Out of 6,750, around 950 pilgrims are more than 70-years-old while, around 5,200 pil-grims are such who had been trying to go under the government quota for the last five years. The origi-nal quota allotted to Gu-jarat for Haj is 3,124 seats which is proportionate to the minority population of 3.32% of all Indian Mus-lims. In Gujarat, against a quota of 3,124 seats, more than 47,000 applications were received in 2014 and above 51,000 applications were received this year. Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

In first remarks by a Con-gress leader on the Patidar agitation for OBC status and reservation in Guja-rat, veteran party leader Madhavsinh Solanki, a four-time Chief Minis-ter who rode to power on the KHAM (Kshatriya, Harijan, Adivasi, Mus-lim) coalition he stitched in the 1980s and thereby alienated upper castes in the state, said he is confi-dent it will fizzle out “be-cause truth has no role in it”. While he did not name Hardik Patel who is spear-heading the Patidar agi-tation, Solanki, now 88, said: “This agitation in Gujarat will not last long because truth has no role in it.” “You must remem-ber that at that time, peo-ple of Gujarat supported reservation for OBCs. Possible rate hike in in-terest rates by Federal Reserve in US, fall in in-ternational prices and ru-pee strengthening against dollar led to higher gold imports in August. Ac-cording to latest data of GSEC Ltd which han-dles air cargo at Ahmed-abad airport, 15.78 metric tonnes (MT) of gold was imported in state in Au-gust 2015 as compared to 7.20 MT of gold im-ported in the same period in 2014, an increase of 119%. After clocking less than 5 MT imports from December 2014 to Feb-ruary this year, imports grew to 22 MT in March , followed by 13.11 MT in April 2015 and 5.78 MT

in May 2015. However the imports fell in June to 1.32 MT but picked up in July to 10.78 MT due to consistent drop in inter-national prices. “We had expected gold imports to pick up as prices went be-low $1100 per ounce of gold in international mar-ket in the first half of Au-gust. The imports picked up in last two months de-spite monsoon being con-sidered a lean season for bullion traders and jewel-ers,” said Chirag Thakkar, director, Amrapali Indus-tries. This is the lowest gold prices in 4 years - in Ahmedabad price fell below Rs 25,000 per 10 gram on August 6. Gold was trading in the city at Rs 26,718 per 10 gram

(spot pricing) on Tuesday. “Demand in the market is expected to shoot up with various festivals and marriage season coming up,” said Girish Choksi, city-based bullion trader. Samir Mankad, director of GSEC Ltd said that in-crease in imports was pri-marily due to fall in inter-national prices. “Though import consignments ar-rived on time but clear-ance was sluggish over two days in last week of August due to violence in city,” said Mankad. In case of silver too, the im-ports picked up. Around 11.92 MT of silver was imported in state in Au-gust 2015 compared to 0.95 MT in July and 0.67 MT in June 2015.

Gujarat high court on Monday issued show-cause notices for termi-nation to 94 people who were recently employed in the HC by former act-ing chief justice (ACJ) V M Sahai. The ACJ made these appointments using special powers granted for recruitment bypass-ing selection procedure. Allegations of arbitrari-ness and favouritism were levelled after the former ACJ recruited 94 people in Class III and IV categories in the HC establishment using pow-

ers under Article 229 (1) of the Constitution. Se-nior judges’ opposition to these recruitments by Justice Sahai erupted into a major controversy that got further fuelled when Justice Sahai filed a suo motu PIL highlighting al-leged irregularity in allot-ment of plots to HC judg-es in 2010. SC has stayed proceedings in the plot al-lotment case. The HC ad-ministration has asked the 94 employees to explain why their appointments should not be terminated because they were made without following prop-

er selection procedure. “No selection process was undertaken,” says the notice. They have also been asked to “disclose the source of information that posts were vacant and that was likely to be filled up”. This is because many people were re-cruited the day after they applied for the posts. The notices mention that these employees are recruited on temporary basis and can be sacked without any notice. However, they have been given a September 11 deadline to explain their side.

The epicentre of the Pa-tidar agitation has shift-ed from north Gujarat to Surat, where Hardik Patel is camping until at least Wednesday to chart future plans. Also, the Surat unit of Patidar Anamat An-dolan Samiti announced plans for a ten-day “Dan-di march” from “vio-lence-affected areas”. The Sardar Patel Group led by Lalji Patel, the parent body from where Hardik started in 2012, has been operating largely out of the north, especially Me-hsana. The mobile internet ban in Gujarat ended Tuesday but not before Ahmed-abad city’s detection of crime branch had written to the police commission-er proposing it be extend-ed by another couple of days to prevent “provo-cation of a riot”. The in-ternet ban was lifted from Rajkot, Vadodara and other smaller towns Mon-day while Ahmedabad and Surat had remained under the ban for the seventh day. Surat police said data services were restored in the evening. In Ahmedabad, district collector Rajkumar Beni-wal issued orders lifting

however, and agreed Har-dik remains with SPG. “He is a lifetime member of SPG, so we cannot throw him out unless he is caught in an anti-commu-nity act. He has not done anything of that sort yet,” Lalji said. Lalji said Har-dik’s Patidar Anamat An-dolan Samiti (PAAS) was only a group on Facebook and WhatsApp, not even a registered organisation when it held its rally in Ahmedabad on August 25. As Hardik launched himself in Delhi, Lalji announced Monday that the SPG’s first priority

is to help families whose sons had died in the vi-olence that followed the rally, provide aid to the injured, and ensure the release of Patidars in custody. “We have the rest of our life to run the agitation. This is more important than rushing to Delhi,” he said. He also demanded a CBI inves-tigation into the role of the police in the violence and declared August 26 “Patidar Shahid Din”. Hailing from Aloda vil-lage in Mehsana, Lalji has eight bighas of farm-land. When not farming

castor, cotton, cumin and wheat, he spends his time in “social service”. He describes himself as a “media shy”, grass-roots person and Hardik as someone who “likes the spotlight”. Lalji said 90 per cent of the public was mobilised by SPG, which claims a 10 lakh membership. He felt the crowd at the Ahmedabad rally would have turned out even if Hardik or he was not there. “By then it had already turned into a movement and the villages had been awak-ened,” he said.

an FIR against unknown “anti-social elements” Tuesday “for spreading provocative messages through social media and various mobile applica-tions”. The FIR charged the accused with spread-ing “provocative messag-

go on “symbolic fasts” in the places worst hit by the violence after the Ahmed-abad rally of August 25. They urged the commu-nity not to take the law in their own hands. The PAAS leaders did not give details where and when the march would begin. The decision was taken after a meeting pre-sided over by Hardik Pa-tel at a farmhouse belong-ing to a Patidar leader in Surat. The Surat edition

of the Patidar rallies had seen the biggest turnout, around 4.5 lakh, on Au-gust 17 in the build-up to Ahmedabad rally. After that rally, Katheriya was a key mobiliser of the Ahmedabad rally. Har-dik met over 500 Patidars where he appealed for do-nations to the families of the eight Patidar youths who died in the violence. Surat has over 10 lakh Patidars including five BJP MLAs.

In spite of the historic verdict, I offered to resign.” Asked why a Patidar agitation now, Solanki said: “Those castes who have got res-ervation in education and government jobs are get-ting college admissions and jobs faster than oth-ers. The upper castes are seeing how OBC, Dalits and tribals are sharing the

pie which was exclusively theirs before reservation. This has created jealousy. The upper castes are ask-ing, why are they taking away what was owned by us.” “Upper castes in Gujarat (Patels, Brahmins and Baniyas) who are 25 per cent have issues with the other 75 per cent of the people… Patels have nev-er asked for reservation before.
