Activity 1 A formal letter a) The teacher asks students if they write letters and why people generally write letters. She focuses attention on the letter and tells students to answer the questions.

b) She asks students if they can remember the jobs which were advertised on page 10. Which one is this? What can students remember about the job? (You must be at least 13; you need a bike, the pay is 12 pound a week.)

FIND THESE THINGS IN THE LETTER.The teacher explains sender and receiver. She tells students to identify the different parts of the letter. She checks the answers with whole class.

HOW DOES ASTRID START THE LETTER? WHY?The teacher asks students some questions. Why doesn’t begin Dear Tony? She doesn’t know him. He isn’t a friend. It’s a formal letter. The teacher explains them that the usual way to begin a formal letter is title (Mr., Mrs., etc.) + surname.

Activity 2cWHAT EXPRESSION DOES SHE USE TO END THE LETTER?The teacher explains that:Yours sincerely is the most common way to end a formal letter when you know the person’s name.Your faithfully is used when you don’t know the person’s name i.e. when you write Dear Sir or Madam.She asks students how they would end an informal letter to elicit love, bye for now, etc.

Activity 2dThe teacher talks with her students about the letter. She asks them if Astrid’s letter is long or short. Is there enough information there? Does it include all the information Mr. Burton needs?

CHOOSE ONE OF THE JOBS FROM THE READING OR LISTENING. WRITE YOUR OWN LETTER OF APLICATION.

The teacher asks students to find jobs on the page 10 and write their own application for one of them. She reminds them to set out the letter exactly as Astrid did. She tells them if their partner doesn’t find any mistakes, they get the job.
