A Hume councillor at the centre of a probe into alleged misconduct has called for a review into the process that led to a fellow councillor being handed a one-month suspension.
But community leaders say there is no need for changes and maintain that both councillors ‘‘got o lightly’’.
Cr Jack Ogilvie last week urged other councillors to support a motion about writing to the Municipal Association of Victoria outlining concerns about the way code of conduct hearings are held.
e motion was defeated, but the Sunbury-based councillor said many questions about the panel set-up remained unanswered.
As reported by Star Weekly, Cr Jack Star Weekly, Cr Jack Star WeeklyMedcra plans to appeal the suspension handed down to him aer an inquiry into claims the pair breached the code of conduct during a heated meeting about Sunbury’s separation from Hume.
Cr Medcra is barred from taking part in all council meetings, briengs and events until the suspension is complete.
Cr Ogilvie was reprimanded. He and Cr Medcra have described
the two-person panel as ‘‘a kangaroo court’’, complaining that no witnesses from an independent investigation held earlier this year were questioned as part of the hearing.
ey said those present for the latest hearing were not required to take an oath.
With a stone-faced Cr Medcra sitting in the gallery, Cr Ogilvie told last week’s council meeting it was ridiculous that the panel was not required to outline reasons for the decision until aer the suspension was completed.
‘‘ese people don’t have to justify their decision for 28 days,’’ he said.
Cr Ogilvie, who was rst elected in 1990, said councillor conduct panels were set up to deal with major breaches of the code.
‘‘is wasn’t gross misconduct; this isn’t what the panels were set up for,’’ he said.
e conduct hearing followed complaints made aer a meeting at Broadmeadows Town Hall last September. It was alleged Cr Medcra tussled with a Broadmeadows Progress Association (BPA) supporter over a sign and yelled at a number of people.
Cr Ogilvie was accused of intimidating behaviour.
BPA secretary John Rutherford said a review was not necessary.
‘‘ey got o lightly,’’ he said. ‘‘As elected ocials of the city of Hume, they behaved disgracefully. ey were rightly pulled up by members of the community and now they are complaining about it. ey haven’t learnt anything.’’
A spokeswoman for Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said the framework for councillor conduct panels was set out under the Local Government Act.
‘‘e Andrews government is committed to conducting a review of the act and in doing so will consult with stakeholders, including the MAV,’’ she said.

Bullets found in the mud of an abandoned Macedon Ranges shooting range once used by soldiers preparing for war are being transformed as a remarkable tribute to the Anzacs. Trentham leadworker Ron Davis says the chance discovery of a bullet inspired him to begin a project that is helping the RSL. That rst bullet dated back to 1906. In the four years since his rst discovery, Mr Davis has collected thousands of bullets to re-fashion into commemorative poppies. The poppies are being sold for $75, with proceeds going to the RSL. Rescued pigs, sheep, cows, goats, and even rabbits, are again on show at animal sanctuary Edgar’s Mission, which is receiving visitors for the rst time in close to two years.
e mission’s shi to Lanceeld from Willowmavin has been a lengthy process, but it’s now open to the public aer being given the green light from the council for farm visits.
Founder Pam Ahern says school and community groups have been among those to take guided tours in the past two weeks.
She says the mission’s humane education program takes visitors on a thought-provoking journey, touching on issues of social justice, animal welfare, sustainability and human health.
‘‘It takes a look at the complex web of connections that cause people to make the choices they do,’’ Ms Ahern says.
“[It] encourages individuals to develop their
own set of values regarding how they should live.”
e sanctuary’s animal rescue work has been ongoing, with volunteers constructing pens, barns and other structures.
Ms Ahern says an increasing number of councils are asking Edgar’s Mission to take in rescued animals, realising that ‘‘there are other options other than death’’.
e sanctuary has also upped its re-homing program and is caring for close to 300 rescued animals.
Ms Ahern says that while the scope of the mission’s work has changed since it began in 2003, the purpose remains simple.
‘‘We’re just trying to make the world a better place,’’she says.
Details are at www.edgarsmission.org.au.

Animals as educators

Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to ensure their cats are desexed and kept indoors at night, with stray and feral animals regularly mowing down native marsupials.
Research shows domestic cats contribute to a stray population that can increase at a rate of 50 per cent a year.
Newham and District Landcare group president Penny Roberts said small and sometimes endangered marsupials were especially at risk. She said Hanging Rock was a problem area, with cats regularly roaming at
by the council had dropped over the past three years. She said most cats put down each year were feral, uncontrollable or diseased.
‘‘Residents and landowners can make use of council’s cat-trap hire service if they have issues with feral cats on their properties,’’ Ms Segafredo said. ‘‘We would also encourage residents to keep their cats indoors or enclosed,
night and harming native animals. Ms Roberts said while she personally saw merit in a ban on cats being kept as pets, it was up to animal owners to do the right thing.
‘‘Any time you have domestic cats that aren’t ‘xed’, you’re going to have an issue,’’ she said.
‘I don’t have a major problem with pet cats as long as they’re controlled and not allowed to wander.’’
Macedon Ranges council said it was dicult to measure the extent of the problem, with no records kept of feral cats in its reserves.
Planning and environment director Sophie Segafredo said the number of cats euthanased
especially at night, to minimise predation of wildlife and unwanted breeding.’’
Robyn Wawn, of Kyneton pest control business It’s A Trap, said she had sold cat traps to landholders from most towns in the Macedon Ranges.
She said with a population of up to 20 million in Australia, feral cats that preyed on native wildlife should be humanely killed.
‘‘ings like quolls and other small marsupials don’t stand a chance,’’ she said.
‘‘I’ve even seen footage of cats springing down, jumping and snatching ying birds out of the sky.’’

Hume council is urging the federal government to extend its kindergarten funding beyond this year amid fears that thousands of children could miss out on crucial hours at preschool.
Research indicates the end of federal universal access will lead to a $1.7 million shortfall in Hume alone and the council has joined a Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) campaign to seek ongoing funding.
Under a national agreement signed in 2008, the federal government funds ve hours of

kinder a week for each child, while state and local governments fund the traditional 10 hours. Federal funding is due to expire at the end of this year.
Hume council city communities director Margarita Caddick said international research showed considerable improvements in the health, well-being and development of children who spend more hours at kinder.
‘‘We’re very concerned,’’ Ms Caddick said. ‘‘If the government decides not to continue … the impact will be signicant.’’
She said the council did not want to reduce
the number of hours children spent at kinder nor have kinder fees rise dramatically.
Cr Helen Patsikatheodorou told last week’s council meeting that other levels of government should not let the costs of valuable extra preschool hours fall to councils.
An MAV report predicted families of the state’s 73,000 preschoolers could face fee increases of up to 100 per cent.
Scott Ryan, parliamentary secretary to federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne, said an announcement about future funding would be made shortly.

A former director of the Australian Emergency Management Institute at Mount Macedon says there’s a “real danger” the organisation will lose its ability to run courses that allow people from various backgrounds to share experiences.
Roger Jones, who spoke at a valedictory dinner held at AEMI last week, said graduates had been a key part of emergency incident responses, such as the Granville train disaster, Ash Wednesday and the Black Saturday res.
As reported by Star Weekly, the federal government announced last May that the institute would be transformed into a “virtual” centre and moved to Canberra.
e government said some of the centre’s 60 jobs would be relocated to Canberra, but the tender process for its replacement continues.
Mr Jones said AEMI, which oers a diploma of emergency management to public servants and members of the CFA and SES, had earned respect around the world over the past 40 years.
‘‘If they lose that residential aspect, they’ll lose a lot,’’ Mr Jones said. ‘‘It’s so easy these days to ask people to apply for a course and then they do it in their own time, but whether they truly learn anything, you can never really know. If you do it residentially, you can see how they handle things close up.’’
Federal Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters and state Macedon MP Mary-Anne omas said
AEMI’s closure would be a massive blow to public sector disaster response.
Ms omas said the loss of local jobs would hurt, while Ms Chesters slammed the federal closure decision. ‘‘To close down an integral part of our emergency response capability, without anything in line to replace it, is typical of this government’s cut now, worry later treatment of vital services,’’ Ms Chesters said.
‘‘is ‘transition’ was supposed to save taxpayers $900,000, but I’m told costs have already escalated.’’
A spokesman for the attorney-general’s department said AEMI would transfer to Canberra by mid-year.
‘‘e institute will continue to deliver many of the current programs and continue to develop new products and services,’’ he said. ‘‘e strength of the institute puts it in a good position to continue to build national capability using new and contemporary ways.’’
He said the institute would maintain educational standards across the emergency management spectrum.
e future of the Mount Macedon site will be decided by the federal nance department at a later date.
Crisis expertise could be lost
‘‘ Whether they truly learn anything, you can never really know ’’ - Roger Jones
Seven men and three women were arrested following raids in Sunbury last ursday morning.
Police said drugs, weapons and chemicals used in the production of methamphetamine were also seized.
Police executed 10 warrants on properties from 6.30am as part of Operation Screenplays, a local campaign targeting rearms possession and drug tracking in the area.
Detective Senior Sergeant George Vale said the raids sent a clear message that police would continue to crack down on drugs and weapons oences.
With Crime Stoppers launching a statewide campaign encouraging people to ‘‘dob in a dealer’’, he said police would like to speak to
anyone with information about drug activity in the Sunbury area.
“We know rearms and drugs are two things that have a signicant negative impact and cause immense harm to our local communities,’’ Detective Senior Sergeant Vale said.
“Drugs are oen a major driver of further crime, including assaults, aggravated burglaries and robberies.
“We also know that where people have access to rearms, particularly those obtained illegally, there is potential for these crimes to escalate, with serious and possibly fatal consequences.”
Anyone with information is urged to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Lock up or cop a neMotorists who leave their cars unlocked could be hit with nes from next month, with Sunbury police frustrated at the number of thefts from vehicles. Crime prevention ofcer Jacqui Newman said Sunbury motorists were particularly careless in leaving cars unlocked, leading to cars being ransacked by opportunistic thieves.
Call on car rammingDetectives have made an appeal for information about the ramming of a police car by a stolen 4WD on Kyneton-Trentham Road near Kyneton in February last year. Police said that after being pulled over, the driver of a silver 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser turned the vehicle around, accelerated at high speed and rammed the police car, pushing it several metres off the road and into a fence. Two male ofcers were taken to hospital.
Businesses targetedThieves have been targeting commercial properties on the outskirts of Sunbury, making off with petrol, tyres, GPS units and tools. Police said a large number of thefts had been reported in the Vineyard Road area since April 5. It’s not clear if the burglaries are linked.
Men skill upMembers of the Macedon Ranges’ ve Men’s Sheds are equipped to help others through major challenges after completing free mental health training provided by the council. About 20 men took part in two six-hour sessions led by facilitators Pauline Neil and Annie
Rowland. Ms Neil said Men’s Sheds were an ideal forum for candid discussions about mental health.
New citizens proclaimedTwelve people became new Australians at a citizenship ceremony at Kyneton Town Hall last Tuesday. The Macedon Ranges residents, originally from the United Kingdom, Thailand, Ukraine, Fiji, South Africa and Canada, were each presented with certicates, lapel pins and an Australian ag.

e centenary since the Gallipoli landings will be marked by some of the largest Anzac Day services ever held in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges.
Organisers expect close to 5000 people to make the trip to Mount Macedon’s giant memorial cross, which will again be the stunning backdrop for the annual service.
e 21-metre cross has been cleaned for the rst time in 20 years ahead of this year’s commemoration, which starts at 6am, Saturday.
With the mount closed to trac, committee chairman Bruce Mildenhall said buses would shuttle people from outlying towns.
is year’s service will feature the scripts of family letters and historical records, music written for the centenary, and prayers from people of dierent faiths.
Sunbury’s rst-ever dawn service will be held at Memorial Hall in Stawell Street at 6.15am. A traditional commemoration service, including a march from Brook to Barkly streets, starts at 10.30am. A dawn service will also take place at Riddells Creek’s war memorial gates, next to the primary school, at 6am.
Another dawn service will be at the Kyneton cenotaph in Mollison Street, with a march at 9.45am and commemoration service at 10am. Woodend’s town march will be held in High Street from 11.30am. is year’s combined Romsey-Lanceeld service includes a march down High Street, Lanceeld, from 8.30am.
Mount Macedon bus service details are at www.mtmacedonanzacdawnservice.com.

Children, including two-year-old Arlo, are being encouraged to put down their game controllers, turn off the TVs and go outside. Research shows one in 10 Australian children play outside just once a week or less. Kids in Nature Network co-founder Cecile van der Burgh said it was time parents gave youngsters a gentle push to truly experience the outdoors. About 40 groups were involved in 65 events across the state as part of last week’s Nature Play Week. Visiting Malmsbury Botanical Gardens last Tuesday, children’s author Alison Lester said it was important that children connect with the real world. ‘‘They love feeling the wind in their hair, the sun on their backs,’’ Lester said. ‘‘They love seeing and hearing all the wonderful sights and sounds that are going on every day.’’ Ms van der Burgh said playing outside could improve mood and concentration and reduce anxiety. It can also make kids happier. For more details on the Kids in Nature Network, visit www.kidsinnaturenetwork.org.au. Matt Crossman

You are spending a lot of money and have the right to be comfortable and happy with your purchase.
Right? So essentially the question is what needs to be done in order to ensure that this is so? Well,
probably the most important thing is communication. It’s a good idea to remember that your real estate
agent is there for more than simply helping with some contracts but is your source of information on
anything that you might not know or be familiar with. The more you communicate the smoother this
process will be.
Another way to ensure that you are completely happy with the home that you have bought is to never
settle for anything less than what you need. This happens a lot when buyers are too eager to purchase
quickly and in that quickness, things get overlooked. Remember that this is going to be your home, take
the time to learn everything you can about the home in question. Does it have enough room for you and
your family? Is there some extra room in case your family grows?
Forward planning is an essential part of buying a home, and should never be overlooked.
You should be left feeling like you have made the most intelligent purchase of your life. If this thought
interests you, then we at Dunlop Real Estate are here to assist you in either or both of a sale or a
purchase. Feel free to contact me, John Dunlop at any time to discuss this or any other real estate issue.
Ring me any time on 9744 2555 or call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for a talk.
Being Comfortable With Your HomePurchase
In a popular court location, this brick veneer within a ve-minute walk of all town services is surrounded by mature gardens on a good-sized block. There are three bedrooms and a study (or potential fourth bedroom), with the main sharing access to the bathroom. There’s also a powder room. A carpeted lounge-dining room links with the kitchen-meals zone, all warmed by a wood heater. Peach-toned cabinetry, an extended breakfast bench, a wall oven and 900mm electric cooktop are kitchen features. Two split-systems and an electric heater support the wood heater to deliver year-round climate control. Front and back verandahs are the spots to sit and soak up pretty garden views. Likely to have astute investors on notice, the property has a carport which is easily converted to a garage if needed.

On about 1331 square metres, with spectacular views across Gisborne to Mount Macedon, this appealing house has four good-sized bedrooms, including the main (to the right of entry) with walk-in wardrobe and en suite. A carpeted lounge room links with the warm weatherboards of the family room and step-up dining area. The kitchen, with cream cabinetry arranged in a clever, almost-circular layout, has a pantry, dishwasher, underbench oven and electric cooktop. A servery window to the dining area is a practical addition. The elevated front verandah is the spot to pull up a pew and soak up the Mount views and the more immediate aspect of landscaped gardens. The property has a wood heater, split-system, ceiling fans, a large, level backyard for kids’ play and a remote-controlled double garage.

This beautifully presented, as-new house on about 1036 square metres will have rst-home buyers and investors paying attention, not least because it’s ready and waiting for new owners who want a hassle-free move-in day. And it’s location is a winner, too – just a short walk to a school. Two bedrooms ank the entry hall and the third is at the back, next to laundry and main bathroom. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. All rooms are carpeted except wet areas, including the large family-meals room, which has big windows dressed in charcoal roller blinds. The well-equipped kitchen has a charcoal laminate-topped island bench, dove-grey cabinetry and splashback tiles, pantry and stainless-steel appliances. Bifold doors open to an undercover entertainment area, which looks out to a terraced yard land a good-sized patch of lawn. Ducted heating, split-system and integrated double garage with access to the kitchen are other keynotes.

Kerbside, this weatherboard heartstring-puller has nostalgic appeal in spades, but inside it’s all about streamlined modernity and classy design touches.
Outdoors matches the interior for modish air.
Many elements combine to make this place a style winner, not least the open-tread timber staircase behind a sheer wall of glass immediately on show in the entry foyer.
Juxtaposed against honey-toned oorboards, white walls and plantation shutters, square-set cornices, lovely
monochromatic wallpaper in the open lounge room and designer light ttings all stamp the place with an enviable chic.
The lounge/sitting room near entry accesses a side patio and, across the way, there are two bedrooms (kid-friendly feature walls) anking a bathroom oozing panache: fully tiled in soft-mocha tones, a well-designed hand-held shower-over-bath arrangement and a oating vanity unit with an oval raised basin.
The main bedroom (off the lounge) has a walk-in wardrobe and fully tiled en suite with oating vanity basin and walk-in shower.
The fourth bedroom is upstairs, next to a large theatre room, with oorboards and a deep-charcoal feature wall behind the TV spot. This bedroom has a walk-in robe and en suite, great for guests or teens.
Next to a boarded meals zone, the kitchen is an inspiring cooks’ space with white stone benchtops, a mix of white 2pac and timber-laminate cupboards, a corner pantry, and dishwasher and 900mm gas cooker with Smeg label. The cooks’ domain links beautifully with an impressive outdoor entertainment area, where there’s a glass-framed 10-person spa open to the sun, undercover built-in

seating and LED feature lighting. This attractive area is very private, courtesy of high rendered walls and one in stacked stone.
Of course, a pad of this standard has other things going for it: ducted heating, refrigerated cooling, LED lights throughout, extensive storage, premium wool carpets, and a lock-up double garage with back roller door and access through the laundry.
If a contemporary abode without a cookie-cutter approach is the goal, this one ts the bill nicely.

“ANZAC DAY”
There are only four days of the year when I will not
open the office or when I very reluctantly answer the
phone. Those days are Christmas Day, Good Friday,
Easter Sunday and Anzac Day! The first three days
are significant religious Holy Days, Anzac Day is a
day of remembrance, of respect and a day to honour
so many for their sacrifices in the past and now. So
many young men and women have left their homes,
family and loved ones to protect us and our lifestyle.
The First World War saw the death of so many fine
young Australians. The Second World War came
and more took up arms to protect our beautiful land.
Those who returned were changed forever, ever, ever those
who did not will be remembered this Anzac Day. Our
brave men and women answered the call to Korea, to
Vietnam and still it goes on. Anzac Day is not a day
to commemorate war but rather a day to recognize
the sacrifice and the loss, a day to honour the fallen,
to acknowledge the on-going pain both physical and
mental of those who return from war.war.war Take the time to
reflect, not just on Anzac Day but every day, on the
sacrifice made by so many.

WHAT \ SONANCE SONARRAY OUTDOOR SPEAKER SYSTEM PRICE \PRICE \ $3695 TECH TALK VERDICT \ OUTDOOR MUSIC THAT WON’T UPSET THE NEIGHBOURS
(Sup
plie
d)
By Rod Easdown
Outdoor speakers are nally getting clever. It used to be they were ugly things that were mounted under the eaves or ugly things that sat in the garden like giant mushrooms. Some were even made to look like rocks, an appearance so obviously fake it was laughable. I’ve never come across an outdoor speaker disguised as a garden gnome but I’d be willing to bet someone’s made one.
Now outdoor speakers are getting small enough – and tough enough – to hide among the plants. ey’re weatherproof, UV-resistant, sprinkler-proof, spider-proof and will even take some pretty hard knocks. And if you don’t feel like hiding them, they’re interesting enough to sit in the fork of your lemon tree, proudly on display. Who knows, the lemons might even be juicier with all those good but subtle vibrations happening.
Sonance is a well-known speaker maker that’s been around since 1981 and it has developed an outdoor speaker system that can keep you and your neighbours happy. But note that word system; these are not speakers you buy individually, this is an integrated package of eight small satellite speakers and a tubular subwoofer that is buried, with only the topmost part visible.
e idea is to mount the eight satellite speakers around the perimeter of the garden, facing inwards. ey are on spikes and have a speaker housing about the size of a drink can that contains a single full-range driver.
Sonance suggests 1.8 to 2.4 metres between each one, with the subwoofer approximately in
the middle. is way you cover an area of 180 square metres, indicating a medium to large garden.
e attraction here is that the speakers all face inwards, towards where the people are, so it minimises impact on the neighbours. It also means an even spread of music across the whole outdoor area, without hot spots where it’s too loud and dead spots where the music struggles to be heard.
e satellite speakers can also be mounted on walls or in trees if necessary, making the system exible.
While the satellites can be set up for stereo with individual le and right channels, the recommended positioning of alternate le and right speakers suggests a result that would give an overall mono sound. is can obviously be changed by the installer if true stereo is needed but I doubt that many folk would be much worried in such an outdoor setting.
e company has made a four-minute installation video that is easy enough for anyone who knows their hi- but, if you need help, any installer could do the job quickly and easily.
And it’s user-friendly. All the speakers have an eight-ohm resistance, which means the system connects straight into the vast bulk of stereo ampliers and receivers, taking up just one right and le speaker output.

36 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 21, 2015
SPORT
e Sunbury Lions were given a football lesson by Darley in the opening round of the Ballarat Football League on Saturday.
e wasteful Lions were punished for their mistakes as the Devils slammed home 23 goals for an 80-point, 23.13 (151) - 10.11 (71) win.
Lions coach Rick Horwood said that while his side won plenty of ball and the clearance count, once his players had the ball there was too many mistakes.
“We were beaten by a much better side and they put us under enormous pressure,” Horwood said.
“We won the clearances but our ball retention was poor. We had enough of the ball but gave it back to them.
“ere wasn’t enough contributors across the board, with only ve players out of the 22 really standing up.
“ey beat us at the spread, which is something we are normally good at. ey gave us a football lesson.”
e two standouts for the Lions were Mitch Conn and Dylan Tarczon.
Horwood said both had played a handful of games with the Calder Cannons and it showed.
“ey were ready to play and were able to run out the game,” he said. “eir disposal and decision-making was a lot better than their teammates.”
He said Greg Hay, Nathan Wood and Ben Said could also hold their heads high.
Both Conn and Tarzcon will return to TAC Cup footy next week, while Matthew Parker is likely to miss the next match aer hurting his ankle.
While not concerned with the result, Horwood said his side would have to step up in a hurry.
“is week we play Lake Wendouree,” he said. “ey made nals last year and won against last year’s grand nalist, Ballarat, on Saturday.
“We’re no longer in a development phase and the young boys won’t get an easy ride from other sides this year.
“We have to learn in a hurry. We can x the issues – it’s not getting the ball, it’s about how we use it.”
In A-grade netball, the Lions got o to a perfect start against the Devils.
With only two of last year’s grand nal side in the line-up, the Lions won 66-17.
e Devils scored seven goals in the rst quarter before being restricted to 10 goals for the rest of the game. Recruit Chloe Curran was on re in the circle for the Lions with 37 goals.

No easy ride for young Lions
League’s rule change to help struggling netball clubsBroadford will be the only club not to ll a full complement of senior netball teams in the Riddell District Netball League this season.
e Kangaroos were unable to get a team up aer losing all their senior side from last season during the oseason.
AFL Goldelds manager Kim Bailey said despite trying to attract new players, the club wasn’t successful in getting the necessary numbers. She said other clubs which had struggled for numbers in the oseason, the Sunbury Kangaroos and Kilmore, would have sides take to the court.
e Sunbury Kangaroos didn’t eld an A-grade team last year.
“It’s essential that all clubs try to eld A-grade netball sides to keep the integrity of the competition,” Bailey said.
“Broadford’s Bonnie Cavanagh tried really hard to get an A-grade team up, but it didn’t work so there was no alternative.”
Bailey said the league had resolved this season to help “struggling” clubs by allowing under-19 players to play in a higher grade as well.
Previously, under-19 players could play only a certain number of matches in a higher grade for the season.
“We’ve brought it in across the board as a lot of clubs are struggling for numbers and we’re
doing everything we can to get full sides from each club,” Bailey said.
“A lot of the under-19 girls can quite easily play two games in the one day and as long as clubs don’t take advantage of the rule, it will be a good thing.”
Bailey said the talent that was being recruited to the competition was “unbelievable”.
Among those joining the competition are Mikalea Vaughan and Meredith Ball.
Vaughan sits second on the Victorian Netball League championship goal scoring table.
On Saturday, she scored 39 goals for Riddell as it kicked o the season with a 58-40 win.
e Bombers outscored the Burras in every
quarter with the Bombers’ defensive pressure a highlight. Youngsters Leah Reilly and Bridget Aughton combined well in the defensive circle to restrict Ball and Amy Carroll.
Ball, who has represented Victoria, is the sister of Australian international Rebecca Bulley.
In other results, Wallan defeated Kilmore 55-16, reigning premiers Melton Centrals were too strong for Rockbank, Macedon exed its muscles against Woodend-Hesket winning 76-15, and Rupertswood beat Sunbury 82-14.

Diggers Rest overcame a spirited rst half eort from Riddell to score a convincing win in the Riddell District Football League.
e two sides were goal for goal in the rst half at Bloomdale Oval with neither able to exert control.
e ball spent most of the half in the middle of the ground, as both teams were made to pay for bad disposal into their forward 50s.
e Burras kicked away in the second half with 12 goals to none to win 16.14 (110) - 4.8 (32) over the undermanned Bombers.
Burras coach Shaun Sims said his side did what it needed to in the second half to get the result.
“e performance in the second half was what we expected,” Sims said. “I was more interested in seeing us look to be a communicative side and in the second half we did that.
“We won the ball and used it a bit better, which was the dierence. ey [Bombers] didn’t look like scoring in that second half.”
Luke Smailes kicked six goals aer being down in the pre-season, while the Burras’ backline, led by Luke Ryan, Tom Gleeson and Jason Williams, was brilliant.
Sims, who was playing coach last season, is set to coach from the sidelines this year.
On Saturday he played in the reserves. “I’m just having a run around with them and concentrating on coaching in the seniors. It’s a complex environment and I’m needed on the sidelines.”
Bombers coach Troy Scoble knew his side would struggle to run out the game.
Already severely undermanned, the Bombers were struck by injuries in the rst half.
“We just ran out of players and were really undone … we knew we would only have a certain lifespan.
“We lost players in the warm-up and had no rotations aer half-time with only one fresh player on the bench.
“One player had to play eight quarters. You’re never happy to lose by that margin, though.”
Scoble said Tommy Alkemade, Adam Vankuyk and Paul Vandenberg all came o injured, though none with long-term eects.
While the injuries limited the Bombers’ impact oneld, they have given the club’s younger players an opportunity.
“We had 11 players with under three games’ experience and we’re looking forward to giving the young guys a go,” Scoble said. “We won’t get our season rolling for ve or six weeks, when we get our best players back.”
e other weekend winners were Sunbury Kangaroos, Macedon, Melton Centrals and Wallan.

Sunbury United’s defenders were made to work hard twice in the space of ve days as they ght to recapture form.
United’s week started with an FFA Cup round ve match against NPL side Melbourne Knights on Tuesday night – the higher ranked team proved too good, winning 3-0.
e Knights struck early and led by 2-0 aer 13 minutes. United’s defence held tight for the rest of the half and it looked like that would be the nal scoreline before a late Knights’ goal in the 85th minute.
It didn’t get any easier for United on Saturday facing top side Western Suburbs in FFV state league 1 north west.
Scores were 1-1 at half-time, before a goal-scoring esta in the second half.
United added a second goal but Western Suburbs added four of its own, winning 5-2.
United is on the bottom of the ladder aer four rounds, with only one point.
In state league 5 west, Gisborne and Kyneton District both lost their matches.
RMIT lead Gisborne 1-0 at half-time and doubled that lead in the second half.
Gisborne got on the scoreboard in the 79th minute with a goal by Nathan Moore.
Kyneton District lost to goal-scoring machine Spring Hills. Averaging more than four goals a game, Spring Hills again dominated in front of goal, scoring a 4-1 win over the Rangers.
e Rangers’ goal came through substitute Shaun Dukic.
The tough season continues for Sunbury United, including Nemanja Govedarica. (Shawn Smits)
United ghts for formBFNLGisborne and Kyneton will both be looking for answers during the week, after losing their Bendigo Football Netball League matches on Saturday. The Bulldogs trailed at every break against Castlemaine despite Matthew Knox’s ve goals and wasted opportunities in the last quarter, kicking 1.7 to lose 12.13 (85) - 10.10 (70). The game was over at half-time for the Kyneton Tigers, thrashed by Eaglehawk 20.21 (141) to 10.8 (68). Ben Weightman continued his good start to the season kicking ve goals. In A-grade netball, both the Bulldogs and Tigers were on the winners’ list. The Bulldogs thrashed Castlemaine, winning 75-21, while it was a convincing win for the Tigers, 52-37, against Eaglehawk.
GolfDave Muller won Romsey Golf Club’s stableford competition on Saturday from Les Gaunt. In warm conditions, the players had to deal with wet greens, a bit of mud and inconsistent speeds, which meant some putts went away from the hole. Muller won on 40 points, from Gaunt on 39 points and Scott Williams on 38 points. Lyn Robison won the women’s competition.
CricketSunbury United’s James Hughes and Lance Watts, Romsey’s Chris Burkett and Gisborne’s Jarryd Vernon were named in Central Highlands team of the year. Hughes, United’s premiership winning captain-coach, was named vice-captain of the side of Central Highland’s best players.

38 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 21, 2015
Aer a slow start to the season, the Sunbury Jets are starting to hit their straps in men’s Big V division 1.
With a new line-up and having spent most of the opening ve rounds on the road, the Jets own a 2-4 record.
On Saturday night, they put in their best performance of the season, a 91-56 smashing of Keilor.
Jets coach Grant Spencer, who missed Saturday’s game with Vic Metro under-18 girls’ commitments, said the side had put in a lot of hard work over the o-season and during the opening weeks of the actual season.
“It’s a completely new group and it takes time to get them all working together, Spencer said.
“We’ve got a lot of games on the road in the opening six to eight weeks and the slow start was expected.
“e win-loss ratio is on par with where I expected it to be,” he said, “though we could have snuck a few more wins in.”
Spencer said he and his players had had their teething problems. “It’s been a testing process, as a coach and for the players,” he said.
“Everyone has dierent styles … I have a set way of doing things and they need to learn that.
“ere’s been a couple of close games where we’ve fallen short. We’re still learning the game, but we’re getting better as a team.”
He said the club had got the right mix of youth and experience.
“We can beat any team on our night. From all reports, we destroyed Keilor and I think we would have done that to any team.
“We’re very potent. e young kids are explosive and take risks, while the older ones know when they need the ball in their hands and can run the plays.”
Having played so many of their early rounds on the road, the Jets will soon be reacquainted with their home court.
“We play 10 games in a row at home in the middle of the year, so the results so far aren’t panic stations,” Spencer said.
“If we win the next two games against Southern Peninsula and Altona, both away, it will bring us to a 50 per cent record and close to the top four again.”

Building condence in their ability to win is the next step for East Sunbury players in the Essendon District Football League.
e under has been right in the mix in both opening games against Coburg Districts before lapses in concentration have cost it dearly.
Coach Steve Grey said that, on Saturday against Moonee Valley, it was an eight-minute period in the third quarter when the Magpies kicked four goals that made “the dierence” between the two sides. e Pies extended that dierence in a 14.13 (97) to 7.13 (55) trouncing.
Jason King and Kamen Ogilvie were best-on-ground for the under in the loss.
Grey believed his side should have won the game. “ey [Moonee Valley] got that burst in the third quarter when our guys dropped their guard and they got a run on. at was the dierence in the game.
“With a young group of guys, they lost concentration, which is bound to happen.”
Grey said while tness levels had improved dramatically in the o-season, xing concentration lapses was the next challenge.
“e young guys need to learn how to concentrate for 120 minutes not just 90 minutes,” Grey said. “Good sides punish you and we have been punished this season.
“We controlled the rst game and the game this week.”
With only one senior win in two years for the club, the ability to win is something players are struggling with.
“ey dropped their heads when they got behind instead of keeping on backing themselves,” Grey said.
“ere’s a lot of upside with the team and I think once they get a win, it will help develop some condence.
“We play Jacana and Burnside Heights [next] and I think we could win both of them and get to a 2-2 record.”
In his rst season as coach, Grey has seen a big change at the club.
“ey understand that you have to work harder to be able to stay in games longer. e boys can see that what we’re doing at training is working. ey’re attacking the ball and there’s a lot more run and carry. ere’s a good vibe around the club and all the boys are working hard.”

Loss of focus keeps Thunder off the radar
Anzac Day rivals meet at dawnBy Tara Murray
Football and netball will be second-most in their thoughts when Sunbury Kangaroos and Diggers Rest players put aside their rivalry on Saturday to honour Australia’s war veterans.
e two clubs will attend the inaugural Sunbury Anzac Day dawn service on the morning of their Riddell District Football Netball League clash and before a special Anzac Day ceremony at Eric Boardman Reserve.
e Kangaroos’ James House said the players had no hesitation in attending the dawn service.
“ere was no one who batted an eyelid,” he said. “ey understood the importance of respecting the nation’s history.
“It’s an important day and attending the
dawn service is number one priority … the footy comes second.”
Burras president Chris Payne said the leadership group decided in 2012 that the club would support Melton’s Anzac Day dawn service, and the players and ocials have attended it every year since.
“is year it’s fallen on a Saturday and Sunbury is holding its rst dawn service.
“We happen to play Sunbury, so we worked out both clubs would attend,” he said.
“Over previous years, we’ve had serving members and we want to say thanks to them and everyone else who has served the nation.”
Before the seniors’ match, the Sunbury RSL will host a traditional Anzac Day ceremony at 2.10pm.
e RSL will be presented by the two clubs with one of 12 especially designed jumpers,
which incorporate the Anzac Day logo and both clubs’ jumpers.
e best-on-eld in the senior football and A-grade netball will also receive one of the jumpers.
e Kangaroos have invited a war veteran to speak to the players on ursday night aer training.
e Sunbury Lions will also host an Anzac Day service before its night game against Lake Wendouree in the Ballarat Football League.
Lions and Kangaroos club members need only show their membership cards at either game for free entry.
Both clubs are hoping this initiative will be something they can extend beyond Anzac Day.
James House, who came up with the idea, said it was about trying to get a community feeling back into football.
“ere’s no need for the Kangaroos and Lions to be in competition. I spoke to [Lions president] Jack [Ogilvie] about it and we really want to work together.
“From my point of view, the two football clubs can combine things and, hopefully, they’ll come and watch us and our faithful will get down and watch them.”
Ogilvie said the Lions were backing the Kangaroos’ plans to work together more oen.
“I have spoken to the league about the scheduling for next year, so we can work together more oen,” Ogilvie said.
“We’ve got a lot of games when both sides are at home and, one week, both teams have byes, which is something we would like looked at.
“When we have our second bye and they’re playing at home, I’ll be encouraging our boys to get down and watch them play.”
