1 St. Albert Photo Club Monthly Newsletter November ‐ December 2009 November's presenter was our very own Mark Pesklewis who demonstrated the use and techniques of studio lighting. Setting up a studio in our meeting space, he demonstrated with four studio lights, as well as a range of other equipment including light meter, pocket wizard wireless transceivers, and several on‐camera flashes. Mark's presentation began with explanations of how a variety of light modifiers worked and what characteristics of light they created. These modifiers included umbrellas, softboxes, octaboxes, gridspots, reflectors, snoots, diffusers, and colored gels. Studio strobes were explained and then rigged wirelessly to the camera using pocket wizards. Mark worked with his camera tethered to his laptop so that photographs were immediately viewable on the computer screen. There was a brief demo using a hand‐held light meter to take incident readings of individual lights to achieve desired lighting ratios. Once the equipment was set up and discussed, a demonstration photo shoot took place with model Angela (above). Various lighting effects were demonstrated, including short (loop), broad, butterfly (glamour), split, and Rembrandt lighting. Also demonstrated was the use of a studio ring flash, as well as using an on camera speedlight as a master to trigger remote speedlights. Model Angela generously supplied her time and expertise.
