Confirmation Guidelines 2017
The Confirmation Program at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church seeks to prepare teenagers for a life-long relation- ship with Jesus Christ and the Church He founded. In order for a student to begin Confirmation Preparation,
they must meet the requirements set forth by the Diocese of Austin:
“In recognizing that faith formation is a lifelong process, a minimum of two years of formal religious education in a parish or Catholic school program is required to immediately precede preparation for Confirmation.”
“The sacramental preparation process is supplemental to regular participation in parish religious education program.” (ABIDE)
In order to receive the Sacrament in the Fall of 2017, the student must have regularly attended:
St. Elizabeth parish faith formation sessions (ABIDE) in previous two consecutive years – 2015-2016 & 2016- 2017.
And attend the Confirmation Direct Preparation Classes As well as complete all the Requirements on the following pages
Confirmation Direct Preparation DATES (for those in their 2nd year of preparation – 2016/2017.)
St. Elizabeth Confirmation direct preparation will take place only in the Fall Semester of 2017.
Confirmation direct preparation will not take place during Sunday evening Youth Nights. Confirmation direct prep will take place on Wednesdays during weeks before celebrating the
Sacrament of Confirmation in the fall of 2017.
Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30pm – in the Parish Hall unless otherwise noted Sept 27– class with Sponsor (or parent) – teens must have an adult with them

Pautas para confirmación 2017
El programa de confirmación de la Iglesia católica de St. Elizabeth, busca preparar a los adolescentes para una relación permanente con Jesucristo y la iglesia que fundó. Para que un estudiante pueda comenzar la preparación
de la confirmación, deben cumplir con los requisitos establecidos por la diócesis de Austin:

Confirmation Preparation Check List
Regular participation in Sunday Mass & Holy Days of Obligation (You are on your honor. If you don’t attend, God still
knows. Our question to you is: why are you going through Confirmation Preparation if you are not practicing your faith?).
Also participation in the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least twice a year. (ref page 7)
Youth Night (ABIDE) - Regular attendance for the two previous years = 80% (you can miss 4 a year). Students with less
than 80% participation will be asked to wait another year. This requirement is for 2 consecutive years prior to Confir-

Attendance Policy for Direct Preparation Classes:
If a student misses one Direct Confirmation Preparation class, they must complete a make-up assignment to remain eligible
for Confirmation. Students who miss more than 1 Direct Confirmation Preparation Class will not be able to receive
Confirmation.
Students must attend a Confirmation Retreat prior to receiving Confirmation. If they are unable to attend the St. Elizabeth
Retreat they must find a Confirmation retreat at another Catholic Parish or attend DCYC, or Teen ACTS Retreat.
Tardiness for Direct Prep Classes: Students who arrive after 6:30pm will only receive ½ at attendance point. Students who
arrive 6:45pm, while still welcome, will be counted as absent and will need to complete a make-upassignment.

Política de asistencia para las clases de preparación directa:
Si un alumno falta a una clase de preparación de confirmación directa, debe completar una asignación de reparacion
para permanecer elegible para la confirmación. Los estudiantes que pierdan mas de 1 clase de preparación de
confirmación directa no seran elegibles para recibir la confirmación.
Los estudiantes deben asistir a un retiro de confirmación antes de recibir confirmación. Si no pueden asistir a los
retiros que ofrecen Santa Elizabeth debe encontrar un retiro de confirmación en otra parroquia o asistir a DCYC, o
Retiro Teen ACTS.
Tardanza para las clases de preparación para el directo: los estudiantes que lleguen después de 6:30pm sólo recibirá ½ en punto de atención. Los estudiantes que llegan a las 6:45, son bienvenidos aun pero, se contará como falta y será necesario completar una asignación de reparacion.

Dress Code & Code of Conduct In efforts to create a Christ-Centered environment, dress and behavior must reflect the attitude of Christ.
Dress Code
No youth should be wearing clothing that contains a violent, offensive or anti-Christian message.
For Girls: Short shorts, strapless shirts, low cut tops, skin tight garments and shirts exposing mid- riff or underwear are not to be worn. As a Catholic Nun described it, “If it starts with a ‘B’, cover it up.”
Girls in violation of the dress code will be asked to put on a t-shirt or longer shorts to remedy the violation.
For Boys: Saggy pants and short shorts are not to be worn. Boys in violation will be asked to change.
Code of Conduct
Bullying and/or aggressive, threatening or violent acts will not be tolerated.
Drugs, alcohol, weapons or other illegal items will not be tolerated. If a teen is found possessing these items, the po- lice will be called first and then the parent.
Cell Phones are not to be seen or used during Abide or Mayhem. If a teen brings a cell phone, it must be put away from the time we gather at 5pm (Abide) or 6pm (Mayhem) until closing prayer in smallgroups.
Teen who use their phones will have their phones collected and returned at the end of Youth Night.
If a teen will not release their cell phone after violation of the cell phone rule, their parent(s) will be notified and they will be senthome.
Parents, please take the time to communicate this policy with your teen.
Respect is vital to creating an environment where one can grow in their faith. It is expected that teens respect the adult volunteers and their peers during Youth Night.
Leaving early: While leaving early is tempting, God has bigger plans for our youth during Youth Night Teens who sneak off campus or do not go to the proper location will have their parents called immediately.
If a teen does need to leave early for a family reason, the parent should come and check them out through one of the adult core team members. Teens will not be permitted to leave with without parental notification and consent prior to 6:30pm (Abide) or 7pm(Mayhem)..
Physical affection: Teens who may have a significant other at Youth Night should be sure their conduct reflects a focus on their primary relationship with Jesus during Youth Night. Public displays of affection are not appropri- ate during Youth Night.
Parents will be notified if their teen isconsistently violating the Code of Conduct.

Dear Students,
You are preparing to become an “Adult” in the eyes of the Church; this is in Faith and Responsibility. As you begin the process of being confirmed, completing the sacraments of initiation, you should be able to easily answer the following questions:
1. Who is God? What is my relationship with Him?
2. What does the Catholic Church mean to you?
3. What is God calling me to do?
4. What is the Bible? How is it divided?
5. Who wrote the four gospels? What do they talk about?
6. What is the Eucharist?
7. Do I know what Reconciliation is? Do I practice it?
8. What are sacraments?
9. How often should in participate in Mass? Why is Massimportant?
10. Why did Jesus die on the cross? What did He accomplish with this?
11. What do we call the Church season of 40 days of fasting, prayer and almsgiving inpreparation for the great Feast of Easter?
12. What is prayer? Do you pray often? Do you know the basic Catholic prayers?
13. Who is the Virgin Mary? Why is she important in our faith?

1. Young Church Nights -ABIDE
All candidates preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and to become fully initiated into the Catholic faith must participate in their designated Young Church Youth Night. Students in high school will be attending Young Church Abide nights on Sundays from 5:00-6:30pm. These nights use an engag- ing model of ministry to facilitate community building, catechesis, and service.
Attendance for Youth Nights
For those preparing for Confirmation, attendance in on-going faith formation is vital. According to Diocesan Policy, to be eligible for
Confirmation Preparation, students must be in 10th to 12th Grade and have regularly attended formal faith formation 2 years prior to receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. For example: If a student would like to receive the sacrament of Confirmation in their 10th grade year, they must have an 80% or better attendance at St. Elizabeth Youth Ministry (or Catholic schooling) their 9th and 10th grade year. Students who fall below the 80% attendance point will not be able to count that year toward the Diocese required 2 year prerequisite for Confirmation preparation and would thus not be eligible for Confirmation.
Abide/Mayhem 2016-2017 has 23 Youth Nights. Each night counts as an attendance point. Students must have 18 attendance points to be eligible for Confirmation. Retreats and other opportunities are offered throughout the year where additional attendance points can be earned.
Tardy Policy:
When a person arrives tardy it can be a distraction and difficult for them to engage and be engaged by the youth night in progress. We recognize this happens from time to time and have a tardy policy for these instances.
If a teen arrives after 5:15 p.m (Abide) or 6:15 (Mayhem)., they will only receive half an attendance point.
If a teen arrives after 5:45 p.m.(Abide) or 6:30 (Mayhem), they are still welcome, but will receive no attendance point.
Teens can earn additional attendance points through a variety of ways:
XLT’s with parents earns 3 points.
DCYC, the Diocesan Catholic Youth Conference in Waco on Jan 27-29, 2017 will add 4 attendance points to a youth’s total.
Imago Dei, will be offered in the spring semester. It will add 3 attendance points if completed.
Godstock on April 22-23 will add 3 attendance points to a youth’stotal.
Confirmation Retreat (for Abide or Mayhem-sometime in spring) will add 4 attendance points.
Special Evenings of Prayer with families will be an additional 3 points.
When a teen is to be absent, the Youth Office (Nancy Longo) does not need to be contacted. The attend- ance policy is generous with opportunities for added attendance points. Since we are adhering to Di- ocesan requirements, no absences are to be excused.
If you would like an update on your student’s participation level, the sign in sheet will have their attendance point total that represents where they are currently in their accumulation of attendance points.

Direct Preparation Classes
All candidates preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and to become fully initiated into the Catholic faith must participate in all of the Direct Preparation Sessions. These sessions will take place during the fall, after the end of the second year of preparation. These classes will help to ensure that candidates are properly catechized and are prepared to receive the Sacra- ment of Confirmation. See Calendar for dates and times
Confirmation Saint Report
A saint’s name is chosen because this saint should act as a model and as an intercessor in the life
of the candidate. We seek the intercession of saints because the Church has always believed
and taught that all the baptized are part of God’s family. God’s family includes all of the saints in
heaven and all of the “saints” on earth who continue to persevere and grow in holiness while
living the Christian life with the help of God’s grace. The name chosen must be a canonized
Christian saint and cannot be a blessed or a devotion. A canonized Christian Saint is a man or a
woman who has displayed heroic virtue and has been recognized by the Church. Include the fol-
lowing topics in your report:
Who is the saint?
When and where did he or she live, family life, job, etc
What have you learned about this Saint through your research?
Why did you select this Saint to represent your faith journey?
How is this person a good role model for you to follow as a confirmed Catholic? ··
Please cite the resources from which you obtained your information (web site, book, etc.) us-
ing MLA standards. All reports should be typed in a 12pt font, a minimum of one page, and
double spaced. To avoid having to rewrite a report please do not copy and paste from the
internet.

4. Letter to the Pastor
Candidates for Confirmation must submit a typed letter to our pastor to introduce themselves, describe their relationship with the Lord, why they are requesting to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and how reception of the Confirmation will help them to live as a disciple of Christ. Address your letter, “Dear Father Efrain” and include the following Introduce yourself: give your full name (first, middle and last name), grade and school, and that
you are a Candidate for Confirmation at St. Elizabeth. Explain the reasons you want to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Give a couple of examples of how you plan to live as a disciple after Confirmation. {Remember, confirmation is the affirmation of your Baptism and the commitment to live the Gos-
pel and spread the Gospel message.} Mention the saint name you have selected for Confirmation and why you have chosen this saint. Mention one aspect of your faith that you have learned more about during your time of prepa-
ration for Confirmation. Explain why this is important. Describe how you have been actively involved with serving others. How have your service pro-
jects changed you? Mention your sponsor by name and the reason you selected your Confirmation sponsor. End the letter “Sincerely,” and sign your first and last name by hand. Check your spelling and grammar! Have someone proofread your letter and correct any mistakes.
5. Young Church Retreat - See Retreat Packet
All candidates preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation are required to attend a retreat prior to receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation.
6. Pre-Confirmation Interviews
Candidates may be asked to participate in an interview with the DRE, Youth Minister, Associate Pastor or Pastor. The purpose is to ensure that candidates are properly prepared to receive the Sacrament and that those involved in their formation can attest to that preparation on the behalf of the candidate. We will set up a Schedule during Aug/Sept/Oct in the Fall of 2017.
Parents/Teens and Sponsor will be included in the 30 minute interview.
7. Mass Attendance on Sundays and on Holy Days of Obligation
The Mass is the source and summit of our Catholic Faith. All candidates and their families must
attend Mass every Sunday (or Saturday evening) and on Holy Days of Obligation. Students who
do not attend Mass have a harder time understanding what is being taught, especially if they
have not been attending religious education classes during elementary and middle school. Reg-
ular participation in Sunday Mass & Holy Days of Obligation (You are on your honor. If you don’t
attend, God still knows. Our question to you is: why are you going through Confirmation Prepara-
tion if you are not practicing your faith?

6. Entrevistas Pre-Confirmación
Los candidatos podrán ser invitados a participar en una entrevista con el DRE, Ministro de la Juventud, el pastor asociado o Pastor. El propósito es asegurar que los candidatos se preparan adecuadamente para recibir el Sacramento, y que los involucrados en su formación pueden dar fe de que la preparación en el nombre del candidato. Vamos a establecer un horario durante agosto / septiembre / octubre en el otoño de 2017.
Los padres / adolescentes y el patrocinador se incluirá en la entrevista de 30 minutos.
7. Asistencia misa los domingosLa masa es la fuente y cumbre de nuestra fe católica. Todos los candidatos y sus familias deben asistir a misa todos los domingos (o sábado por la noche) y en fiestas de guardar. SERVICE
Candidates should actively serve others; it is important not only to listen and to understand the Word of God but also to apply the lessons learned. To serve others is a true gift for both the recipient and the giver. This is essential to living as a Catholic and following in Jesus’ footsteps. The connection between Confirmation and service is that each confirmed Catholic has a responsibility to serve as a living example of Jesus’ teachings to serve one another. God calls us to serve and we say, “Here I am, Lord!”
This is also an opportunity for the candidates to explore ways in which they can be of service to our parish and to our community at large.
Requirements:
Four service projects. (1 in Liturgy, 2 in the parish community, 1 in the outside community)
Candidates should document their projects and hours in service on the Service Project Form.
Complete the “What is Service?” section of the Service Project Form upon the conclusion of all four service projects and turn in.
Guidelines:
Service should reflect work done beyond the usual chores required at home.
Service should primarily be related to the Catholic faith through projects at the parish or in ministry tothe poor, disabled, elderly, or homebound.
The service cannot have financial rewards. (No payment for services)
House chores and babysitting are not considered service projects.
Service projects should be at least one hour induration.
Service should be done with a willing heart and carried out in a generous
spirit. It is the candidate’s responsibility to fulfill the service project
requirement.

8. EL SERVICIO A LOS DEMAS
Los candidatos deben servir activamente a los demás; es importante no sólo escuchar y comprender la Palabra de Dios, sino también aplicar las lecciones aprendidas. Servir a los demás es un verdadero regalo tanto para el que sirve como para el que es servido. Esto es esencial para vivir como católico y seguir los pasos de Jesús. La conexión entre la Confirmación y el servicio es que cada confirmado católico tiene la responsabilidad de servir como ejemplo vivo de las enseñanzas de Jesús en servirse el uno al otro. ¡Dios nos llama a servir y deci- mos, "Aquí estoy, Señor"!
Es también una oportunidad para que los candidatos exploren maneras en las que pueden ser de servicio a nuestra comunidad parroquial y a la comunidad en general. ¡No deje sus proyectos de servicio para último minuto!

El servicio debe realizarse con el corazón dispuesto y llevarse a cabo con un espíritu de generosidad.

Confirmation Ministry List

Once you have committed yourself to this ministry, you will be unable to switch, so we ask that you prayerfully discern where you are being called to serve. Forms must be submitted by the first Abide night on September 14th and it is understood that your service will begin on the following week.

St. Elizabeth Hospitality: Volunteers serve as ushers and greeters during Masses at the Parish and will also help to set out
new missals when needed.
St. Elizabeth Gift Shop: Teens will be helping in the Parish Gift shop following weekend masses and through the week with stocking and inventories.
St. Elizabeth Choir: Teens may serve as singers, cantors, and musicians for St. Elizabeth Masses
Altar Serving: Teens may serve as Altar Servers for Masses.
Arts & Environment: Teens will help make our sacred spaces beautiful for Liturgy, most especially Christmas, Holy
Week, and Easter. –
OTHER Parish Service Opportunities
St Elizabeth KJT: a fraternal support group for the Church that helps with different projects around the Parish. KJT sponsors the monthly pancake breakfasts.
St. Vincent de Paul food Pantry: Teens will help serve those coming to the food pantry.
Fiesta & Event Ministry: Teens will help set-up and clean-up the hall for events as well as work and prepare for the Par- ish Fall Fiesta.
Religious Education: Teens may serve the Religious Education Department in administrative needs, events, re- treats, RCIA, etc.
St. Elizabeth Parish Office: Teens will be serving the needs of the Parish Office with mailings, bulletins, set-up,
clean-up, etc.
Legion of Mary: The Spanish and English Legion of Mary meet once a week to pray together as a community conse- crated to the Blessed Mother.
Challenge: Challenge is offered for girls middle school and high school girls on Monday nights. Women are invited as participants to not only receive what the ministry has to offer but serve as mentors for the younger girls in- volved.
Youth Ministry Volunteer: Students may help with set-up and clean-up for youth nights, office duties, social media, parish event staff, service projects, etc.

Legión de María: el español y el inglés Legión de María se reúnen una vez por semana para orar juntos como una comunidad consagrada a la Santísima Virgen.
Challenge: Desafío se ofrece para chicas de secundaria y preparatoria de chicas el lunes por la noche. Las mujeres están invitadas como participantes no sólo recibiran lo que el Ministerio tiene para ofrecer pero servir como mentores para las jóvenes involucrados.
Voluntario de la pastoral juvenil: Los estudiantes pueden ayudar a puesta a punto y limpieza para noches de juventud, funciones de oficina, redes sociales, personal parroquial, proyectos de servicio, etc..

ROLE OF SPONSOR
The Code of Canon Law states “the person to be confirmed is to have a sponsor. The
sponsor’s function is to take care that the person confirmed behaves as a true witness of
Christ and faithfully fulfills the duties inherent in this sacrament.” Canon #892
A sponsor is a role model, a guide and encourager.
They must be living their Catholic faith.
They must be fully initiated (received Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation)
If married, it must be a valid Catholic marriage.
They must live a life of active faith in the Catholic Church. {They must attend
Mass each Sunday as both the Ten Commandments and the precepts of the
Church teach. A sponsor must be one who is in full communion with the Roman
Catholic Church and able to receive communion.}
Parents are not allowed to sponsor their own children. Sponsors must be over the age
of 16 and should be significantly more mature than the person being confirmed.
Candidates may have only one sponsor present them to the Bishop at Confirmation.
Sponsors are asked to:
Pray with and for the candidate.
Share what Confirmation means to them with candidate.
Be an active member of their local parish.
Share conversation and encouragement.
Attend the Rehearsal and Confirmation Liturgy.
By signing the Sponsor Covenant, the sponsor is saying they fulfill the
requirements above.

RESPONSABILIDAD DEL PADRINO
La ley del Código del Canon de la Iglesia Católica dice en el numeral 892: “En la medida de lo posible, tenga el confirmando un padrino, a quien corresponde procurar que se comporte como verdadero testigo de Cristo y cumpla fielmente las obligaciones inherentes al sacramento.”
El padrino es un modelo a seguir, una guía y animador. Por lo tanto, tiene que estar viviendo su fe católica. Debe estar iniciado completamente (Bautismo, Primera Comunión y Confirmación) y si es casado, debe estar casado en la Iglesia Católica. Debe asistir a Misa cada domingo como enseñan los Diez Mandamientos y los preceptos de la Iglesia. El padrino debe ser UNO en comunión completa con la Iglesia Católica Romana.
Los padres de familia no pueden ser padrinos de sus hijos. En Sta. Elizabeth el padrino debe ser mucho más maduro que la persona a confirmarse, por lo tanto, alumnos de secundaria no pueden ser padrinos de sus compañeros o amigos.

CONVENIO DE PADRINO DE CONFIRMACION
Como padrino de Confirmación, su papel es fomentar la fe de su candidato, ser un “ejemplo” para él
