PASTOR’S LETTER
Dear Friends,
As we celebrate the third Sunday of Easter, we are reminded of the appearances of the
Post-Resurrection Jesus, along with all the stories of the Apostles and their miracles. I suggest that
you take some time with our church tour book, which you can pick up in the narthex, and revisit
our bas-relief panels and their explanation on page 24. They are of particular interest at this time of
year.
At the Easter Vigil, I had the privilege of baptizing 7 individuals in the font and confirming them
along with 14 others, as they all received their First Eucharist. Their pictures were in last week’s
bulletin. It was a glorious night for their families and our parish. We witness to each other in the
breaking of bread and continue to pray for each other as we proceed on the journey of faith.
Also, I am grateful to all those who made the Triduum possible. Scores of people worked behind
the scenes to make the 3 sacred days a beautiful experience. This includes our choir, Environment
and Art, cleaning of the church, and all the liturgical ministers. Without their support and hard
work, Fr. Fred and I would not be able to adequately preside at those liturgies. This is yet another
sign of the Risen Lord working in the community.
As you read this letter, Bishop Kane will have confirmed 106 of our students from our school and
Religious Education program. Two Confirmation liturgies were celebrated on Saturday, April 29.
Congratulations to all our Confirmandi. Their names are on the front cover of the bulletin
Confirmation, along with Baptism and Eucharist, is considered one of the sacraments of initiation.
Although the Holy Spirit comes to us in all 7 sacraments, and in many other ways, we are asking
the Holy Spirit to enrich our spiritual journey in a special way at Confirmation. It is considered the
completion of Baptism. If you have been confirmed, you received these gifts:
Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgment, Courage, Knowledge, Reverence, and Wonder and
Awe. There are times in our life when we need to ask the Holy Spirit to open these gifts. An
example might be when we are racing through life and cannot take time to savor the moment. We
can ask the Holy Spirit to open the gift of Wonder and Awe and help us show down so that we are
aware of the wonders of nature and the people around us.
We are also given the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. Here is an opportunity to pray that the Spirit open
the fruit of patience. You see how these are tied together. When we slow down and ask to open the
gift, we then receive the fruit of that gift. The fruits of the Spirit are: charity, joy, peace, patience,
generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, kindness, self-control, goodness, and chastity.
Clearly, this is a lifelong journey, but I am surprised at how many do not ask the Holy Spirit to help
open the gifts which were given to us many years ago so that the 12 fruits can take root in us.

3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER 3 APRIL 30, 2017
WELCOMING WEEKEND TODAY - Sunday, April 30 After the 10:45 AM Mass
If you are new to St. Hubert or have been here for a while but have not had time to register and are interested in joining our parish family, please join us after the 10:45 AM Mass today, Sunday, April 30th in the lower level of the church. We'll gather for about one hour to share a meal, find out about the parish and complete your registration. Our next Welcoming event will be in late August.
LITURGY CORNER
3rd Sunday of Easter "Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him." The
disciples on the road to Emmaus had already heard reports about Jesus' resurrection. It was at the forefront of their
minds, but in spite of this, they did not recognize Jesus when he stood right before them.
Why not? Perhaps because they weren't looking for him. Maybe they didn't really believe that he was alive. Or it
could be that his appearance was not the same as it had been before. Whatever the case, it's very interesting to
learn that it was actually while celebrating the Eucharist that these men finally realized who was right there with
them! "He was made known to them in the breaking of bread."
Living as we do some two thousand years later, it is easy to imagine that recognizing Jesus was a snap for those
who walked the earth when he did. We can run the risk of feeling sorry for ourselves that we don't get to see Jesus
in person they way THEY did. But look here! It was through the Eucharist that Christ was made known to them,
and we too have that gift right in front of us. We celebrate every week
the same "breaking of bread" at the altar during Mass. Jesus is present
with us, body, blood, soul, and divinity, even if we don't recognize
him! He is there, present in our midst.
If our eyes of faith are feeble, we can pray that the Lord will help us to
know his presence in the Eucharist. Just as he came to comfort and
accompany his first disciples, he wants to do the same for us through
the Most Blessed Sacrament. We only need to be sure that we are
always on the lookout to find him in our midst.
St. Hubert 4 Hoffman Estates
On this National Day of Prayer for our nation, we gather with our family and friends to discuss important national issues, and then join in communal prayer for wisdom, prudence, and right judgment enlightened not by our political views, but influenced by our religious views.
Let us pray...
Good and gracious God, You are a God of justice and mercy. Enlighten our minds to choose what is right in your eyes and grant us the wisdom to acknowledge what is right. Enlighten our lives with the fire of your love and strengthen us to work for the common good and not our individual needs. For it is through your goodness that we have all we need to do your will in our nation.
We ask all this, in and through the name of Jesus, your Son who lives with you and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Liturgical reform - its hopes and challenges
On November 29, 1964 — a year after the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on
the Sacred Liturgy was enacted — the “New Mass”, as it was then called, was
introduced into US parishes. Join us in examining the liturgical reforms of Vatican II
which proclaimed the Mass as ``source and summit of Christian life’’ and encouraged
the ``full, conscious and active participation’’ of all in the Eucharistic celebration.

3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER 9 APRIL 30, 2017
REV. RON ROLHEISER, OMI
Nearly 2,000 years ago, two disillusioned youths
consoled each other as they walked that seven-mile
stretch of road separating Jerusalem from Emmaus.
They moved slowly, depression having taken the spring
from their steps. A double feeling clung to their hearts
that day. They were hurting and there was reason. Their
messiah and their dreams had just been crucified. A
deep dark disappointment dampened their spirits. And
there was fear. Most of all, there was fear. Not fear that
they themselves might be crucified. That prospect
loomed more welcome than the thought of going on.
Theirs was that more horrible fear, the fear that comes
from the realization that perhaps nothing makes a
difference after all, maybe our dreams and our hopes
point to nothing more real than Santa and the Easter
Bunny. Maybe hope is only for children and the naive?
They had been so excited, so full of hope. The
uncrucified Christ had filled them with a dream. With
that dream had come a new innocence, a freshness, an
energy, a feeling absent since they had been children
and which, prior to meeting Jesus, they had, long ago,
unconsciously despaired of ever feeling again.
One weekend, one black Friday, had changed it all.
They walked now, realistic again, more than 48 hours
older, their dreams, like their messiah, dead, entombed.
They had grown up a lot in one weekend. Their naiveté
had died as it hung exposed, mocked and ridiculed by
the wise. There was a lesson hard learned, but it brought
a hurt and a disappointment beyond words. But another
feeling clung to them too, like a demon refusing to be
exorcised. The dream still burned holes in their hearts.
Mocked and dead – maybe it didn’t matter? Maybe
something was more real than even death! Hurt beyond
words, confused beyond doubts, they searched for
words, grasped for trust. Then a stranger caught their
step and caught their mood. They didn’t recognize him.
How could they? In their loss of trust, their messiah had
died.
But the stranger begins to find the words: “Do they not
yet understand the ways of God? Isn’t it always when
they don’t understand, and have to trust, that they
understand the most deeply? Wasn’t it necessary for
naiveté to be so exposed and ridiculed? Is that not its
glory?” His words burned in them, touching and
soothing that same deep part of the heart where the
dream had lain. But they were only words, a balm, a
momentary salve, nothing more. The doubt, the hurt, the
fear, these lingered on. Emmaus and twilight appeared
at the same time. The stranger had been a consolation.
Why not ask him to stay? They continued to share,
bread and consolation. Suddenly their eyes were
opened. Their minds and hearts were opened even
further. They understood. Jesus was with them again.
The dream exploded anew like an atom split. They split,
immediately, for the ends of the earth, hanging their
naiveté and their dreams on crosses everywhere. The
dream never died again. Easter Sunday had eclipsed a
godless Friday. Christianity goes through multiple
moods and feelings. Each age must struggle with its
own emotions. Today, in terms of feeling, we live in
that time between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. We
are trudging along the road to Emmaus. Like the two
disciples, we live with crucified dreams. Aesthetically,
romantically, ethically, and religiously, we are
surrounded by despair and its child, cynicism.
Dreams are giving way before the caveat of the cynic;
faith is daily being displaced by doubt; and
perseverance and long-suffering are all but extinct in a
culture and church of release and enjoyment. Worst of
all, there is fear, an unconscious fear whose tentacles are
beginning to color every facet of life. It is the fear that
perhaps our Christian hopes and dreams point to nothing
beyond our own hopes and dreams. Perhaps faith is,
after all, only a naiveté. Isn’t Christ as dead as he was
on Good Friday? Who, save perhaps for a few good
thieves, is still turning to a cross for salvation? Yet there
is something else: The dream still clings to us, refusing
to let us go. It burns holes in us still, hanging on to us,
even when in infidelity and despair we can no longer
hang on to it. Hope is still more real than death. In our
hurt, we are struggling for words and grasping for trust.
We need to remain on the road to Emmaus. The stranger
still stalks that same road. In his company we need to
discuss our doubts, discuss the scriptures and
continually offer each other bread and consolation. At
some moment too, our eyes will be opened. We will
understand and we will recognize the risen Lord. Then
the dream will explode anew like a flower bursting in
bloom after a long winter. We will be full of a new
innocence. Easter Sunday will happen again.

Catholic Charities New Hope Apartments: A Transitional Housing Program for Homeless Families
March, 2017 Update Family #28
Our family is a single African American female fleeing a domestic violence situation. She has three sons ages 14, 10, 8, two daughters 9 and 16, and a new granddaughter. She currently works part time as a CNA. She is currently looking for more clients.
This family’s situation seems to be steady now. Mom is currently working from home. She reports that when her daughter is away at school she watches her granddaughter and when she returns back home her daughter is on duty. Meanwhile, she is still going to therapy for her arm and feels it is helping. She continues to go through the process to receive death benefits for her children and has a pending case.
Current Goals: ● Save at least 3 to 6 months’ worth of rent. ● Save 90% of income taxes. ● Make sure that her daughter is linked with services for her and the baby. ● Take advantage of the Women’s Program at Harper to pursue a career
in the medical field
This mom is very grateful to have the support of the Peace and Justice Cluster.
Family #29 Our mom is a single white female with a three year old son who became homeless due to low income status. Her child’s father does not work and is not financially stable. She was staying with her child’s father and they were not getting along living with his parents. They stayed with friends for about two months before she went to the shelter in November of 2016.
Our mom got a new job! She now works as the General Manager for a chain of pizza restaurants. She is very excited and will be working a lot of hours. She is still working very hard on her goals, focusing on repairing her car, and increasing her savings. She is almost finished with repairing her car. She is very focused on saving, but she is finding it hard as she tries to catch up on other bills while working on her credit. She is excited to be a manager with a guaranteed 40 hour work week.
She is happy to be able to see her doctor and get medication to stabilize her mental health. Her son is doing well and her friend has been helping her out with child care. Our mom is in the process of finding her son an affordable preschool to attend. She is trying to work out child support arrangements with her ex-husband. Things are moving very slowly, yet she is trying to give him a chance to get a job since he is currently unemployed.
Current Goals: ● Save at least 3 to 6 months’ worth of rent. ● Save 100% of income taxes. ● Continue to keep mental health stabilized. ● Find affordable childcare.
New Hope is also grateful for the support the Peace and Justice Cluster has done for the program.

When we ask that you bring in food, we are asking for your help to feed the homeless or those who are struggling to keep a roof over their heads.
Have you ever seen a homeless person? You may have seen one on a corner in Chicago, but are they really in need? Some make more money then we do on our jobs.
Yesterday I passed by a man walking near my house. As he passed I said “hi,” he said “hi” without lifting up his head, he just moved the bag he was carrying from one shoulder to the other... Soon another person shuffled down the sidewalk carrying a bag too. That's when I realized these people must be homeless. They had on winter coats on a spring day. No one does this except people who have nowhere to put their belongings. They carry everything they own.
This is the reason we ask for your help, to help bring hope to those who feel hopeless. We are asked to give food to nourish the body, but who helps nourish with spiritual food?
Our collection is May 6 & 7th.

At the Easter Vigil Mass, St. Hubert student
Matthew Bussen received the Sacrament of Baptism and
the Sacrament of First Communion. Matthew's fifth grade
class celebrated with him during Easter week as he
received the Eucharist for the first time with them.
Congratulations Matthew and welcome to the Church!
First Graders enjoyed recalling stories and singing songs for
their parents, grandparents, and special guests on Thursday,
April 20. The performance was a cross-curricular activity that
joined Literacy and Music. The theme of Thursday’s
performance was Treasures! In their literacy lessons,
children read stories and learned about how people or things
can be treasures. This big idea was extended in music class
as students learned songs with similar treasure themes. It
was a wonderful way to extend their learning. The students
did an outstanding job!

Call the Parish Office 847-885-7700 for further questions or to make arrangements.
BAPTISMS To register for Baptism, stop in or call the Parish Office. Parents must attend a Baptismal Preparation Meeting, which is held on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM. You may attend this parent meeting either before or after the baby is born.
Baptisms take place on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 1:30 PM or at Mass by arrangement. You will confirm the date for Baptism by attending the Baptism Preparation Meeting.
MARRIAGES Please do not reserve your banquet hall before confirming the date with the church. Set your date by calling the Parish Office as early as possible as you plan your wedding—at least 6 months before the wedding. Weddings take place on Saturdays at 2:00 PM. Weekdays and Sundays must be arranged individually.
RECONCILIATION Saturday after 4:30 PM Mass, or by appointment.
