As we enter 2017, China has found a new equilibrium. After 35 years of double-digit growth, the world’s second largest economy is settling into a more mature phase, with this year’s growth pegged at a comfortable 6.5 to 7 per cent. The nation’s top leaders have pledged to “maintain stability while seeking progress” at the Central Economic Work Conference last December and this is an approach that we at Jebsen Group are all too familiar with.

Despite the uncertainties that plagued the global economy in 2016, the Group has done well by balancing tradition and innovation. We continued to develop our core competencies in new ways to create sustainable business opportunities for ourselves and our partners.

Take Jebsen Consumer, for example. The team introduced Dyson to Hong Kong in 2008 and Mainland China in 2012. After establishing the British technology brand’s presence in over 100 premium department stores, Jebsen Consumer began looking for other innovative ways to deepen its success. Working with Dyson, the team has created three Dyson concept stores where the full brand experience can be delivered to shoppers in a unique setting. This customer-centric philosophy is also guiding the development of J Select, which has recently seen a revamp of its online presence to better serve and engage shoppers.

Keeping pace with consumers is something that our Beverage business does equally well. For Jebsen Fine Wines, a diverse portfolio of wines, spirits, sake and water has been a key success factor. With over 70 brands in Hong Kong and 40 brands in Mainland China, the business unit is able to cater to the varied and changing lifestyles of consumers. This was demonstrated at Hong Kong Wine & Dine 2016, when Jebsen Fine Wines created a ‘Jebsen Village’ to showcase the diversity of its offerings. Blue Girl Beer has also enjoyed a successful year in 2016, the team continued to deepen and broaden the engagement with targeted consumers through diverse online and offline interactive events and activities across the region. Growth continues to be on the cards as Blue Girl Beer ended the year on a high note by entering a new city, Shishi in Fujian province, with a well-received Christmas party.

There’s little doubt that Jebsen Motors is racing to stay ahead of the competition not only with new facilities but also exceptional service. As it strives to be the industry benchmark for profitability and professionalism, the business unit continues to engage customers and the community. It seizes opportunities like the Porsche Panamera launch to organise exclusive dinner events for customers and the 2016 Shenzhen Longgang Half Marathon to grow closer to the community as an official partner and exclusive sports car sponsor.

I’m also happy to share that Jebsen Industrial is successfully growing its presence along the value chain. Transforming itself from a distributor to a brand owner and business partner, Jebsen Industrial continues to leverage its experience and expertise to create new

business opportunities. It has recently made waves in the cinematic and broadcasting industry by collaborating with leading lensmaker Thales Angenieux to co-develop the new Angenieux Type EZ Series zoom lenses for independent videographers and cinematographers.

It seems likely that global economic uncertainty and volatility will remain a dominant theme for some time to come. The year 2017 has the potential to be equally

surprising as last year, which as a minimum has taught us that we must learn to expect the unexpected. It is, however, very gratifying to me to see that

we were able to navigate, due to the focus and professionalism of all the teams in the Jebsen group, the various pitfalls which suddenly appeared in front of us and we still delivered an acceptable result. We understand that success is a marathon, not a sprint and as a consequence in 2017, we are committed to continue moving towards our goals, one step at a time.

Transformation in motion The Jebsen Industrial business may have the longest history in the Group but it never ceases to be forward looking in meeting new market developments. Managing Director Maximilian von Stillfried shares his vision for the future.

When Jebsen Group was founded in 1895, its first business interest was in the industrial sector. At a time when China was evolving from dynastic rule and beginning to welcome industrialism, Jebsen thrived by introducing European solutions to the nation. It all started when the Group signed an agreement with BASF to trade indigo dye in 1897. Since then, China has made enormous strides in social and economic development and the Group has gradually diversified its businesses.

Today, as one of the Group’s four major strategic business units, Jebsen Industrial serves as a trusted partner, advisor and consultant to both foreign and local partners, delivering premium technology and dynamic solutions along the entire value chain: Business Management, Customer Relationship Management, Product Lifecycle Management and Supply Chain Management.

In 2013, Mr Maximilian von Stillfried joined the business unit as Managing Director and brought with him a clear, bold vision for the future: To be the most trusted and recognised business partner for Asia, delivering dynamic and sustainable B2B growth solutions.”

“As China changes, Jebsen Industrial must change too. To serve our customers and partners well, we need to listen to them and understand their customers’ needs and wants at least as well as they do, ideally even better,” he said.

The business unit has embarked on a transformation journey that expands and affirms its core expertise while proactively building new cutting-edge competencies.

Mr von Stillfried advocates the need to truly understand all drivers, points of view, needs, expectations, history, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of customers, their customers as well their partners. He calls this the foundation to build the ability to “speak the language” of the industry, organisation and functional specialisation of the other party and their business model stakeholders.

“In a way, you can imagine a company like a mobile phone. It needs four basic elements to function — the network (macro environment), the hardware (which, in our case, is our partners and their solutions), the battery (our customers supplying us with energy through revenue) and the SIM card (our infrastructure and staff as they connect all the elements to make it an operating system). By recognising that all elements are equally important, we strive to create mutual success,” he said.

From a strategic standpoint, Jebsen Industrial is focused on growing its businesses through new and emerging technologies and solutions in the Green, Clean, Health and Well-being sectors. Its NEIS - Natural, Electronic, Intelligent and Smart Solutions are in direct response to current and emerging market and customer needs. These are set to improve sustainability and productivity, as reflected in increased competitiveness, profitability and return on investments. The value

proposition resonates particularly well with China’s industrial sector, given that environmental sustainability in China has become inseparable from both economic growth and daily life.

From its roots as a service provider in brand building and distribution, Jebsen Industrial is rapidly growing its presence along the value chain. It is emerging as a well-respected industrial company with white label and own-brand solutions while it continues to add elements to its professional services portfolio, which facilitates partners from all over the world to grow in, through and with Asia.

Focusing on consumer & customer centricity ”Whether our solutions are pushed out to, or pulled in from, our customers and their consumers, focused and responsive customer centricity is the guiding principle of our four business lines — Automation & Services, Building Products, Cinematic & Broadcasting Solutions, and Specialty Ingredients & Solutions — and will determine their future going forward,” said Mr von Stillfried.

Investing more time in growing its knowledge and expertise allows Jebsen Industrial to guide its customers in identifying their needs and tailoring competitive solutions for their success. With this approach, its Building Products business line, for example, secures high-profile projects on a continuous basis. The harbourfront enhancement and revitalisation of Hong Kong’s Western Wholesale Food Market, Porsche Centre Hong Kong’s new aftersales service centre and Ping An Financial Centre in Shenzhen are just a few examples.

In the case of Hong Kong Children’s Hospital, the city’s first paediatric hospital, the team developed an end-to-end sanitary solution by clearly understanding the customer’s three-pronged requirements for hygiene, patient experience and environmental performance. It also won over WF Central, a commercial development in Beijing’s Wangfujing district, by demonstrating how its sanitary, electronic and intelligent technology and accessories address the project’s specific needs.

Jebsen Building Products secured a number of high-profile projects in 2016, including outfitting a premium shopping complex in Beijing's Wangfujing district.

Developed strategic focus on Natural, Electronic, Intelligent and Smart solutions to help customer improve sustainability, efficiency and productivity.

Won a series of high-profile Building Product projects in Mainland China and Hong Kong with a customer-centric mindset and eco-friendly solutions.

Revamped its Corporate Website with a stronger focus on content and accessibility to engage and connect with partners and customers.

Co-developed the Angenieux Type EZ Lenses, creating a new business model with partners and targeting an underserved market segment.

Opened Spindle Repair Centre in Dalian to offer Germany repair quality standards locally, saving customers time and money.

Major Milestones in 2016

Leveraging insights and expertise A commitment to creating greater customer value has also motivated Jebsen Industrial to take a closer look at its existing capabilities and market experience and explore innovative ways to leverage this. Its Cinematic & Broadcasting Solutions business line is an excellent example, having recently collaborated with French lensmaker and market leader Thales Angenieux to develop and produce a new series of zoom lenses, thereby expanding into a new market segment.

The team had earlier identified that the ‘prosumer’ segment was underserved and observed that while the market trended towards lighter, smaller, cheaper and technically advanced cine-style cameras, there were no lenses in the marketplace that could satisfy this technological change and at an affordable price. They also recognised that, with China poised to surpass Hollywood in terms of box office sales by 2018, taking Chinese user feedback into consideration was essential.

These insights led to the collaboration with Angenieux and Band Pro Film & Digital Inc., a U.S. based global company specialises in products and solutions for professional filmmakers and videographers. The Angenieux Type EZ lenses have created record order numbers to date, with customers queuing up for the next-generation technology since its announcement! Expanding into services In addition to equipping customers with the right solutions, Jebsen Industrial has expanded into providing professional services for a journey with customers throughout a product lifecycle. In the cinematic and broadcasting industry, it operates JCineCare, a lens and film equipment repair and maintenance service centre to help leasing companies, production companies, film crew, academic institutions and the wider industry maximise value from their equipment investments.

More recently, it has also introduced machinery and equipment services at its Spindle Repair Centre in Dalian to serve tier 1 automotive OEMs in northeastern China. As this is a specialised field, in order to ensure professional services, many Chinese companies used to send their spindles to the original manufacturers overseas. Jebsen Industrial’s move to offer world class repair quality standards locally creates significant time and cost savings for its customers. Today, it already counts major automotive manufacturers like Thyssenkrupp, Volkswagen and SKF among its customers.

Building its own brands Like the rest of Jebsen Group, Jebsen Industrial has spent decades marketing and distributing products for principal brands. Along the way, it acquired vast experience and expertise in brand building that Jebsen Industrial is now putting into good use.

With its research and development capabilities and deep understanding of local market and consumer needs, the business unit launched its first self-owned brand for the food and beverage sector, Weiwanjia, in 2014. Just two years later, it introduced another self-owned brand, BelleSalud, which uses naturally sourced ingredients to formulate effective dietary and beauty supplements for the modern consumer.

Into the future Across all its business lines, the goal, according to Mr von Stillfried, is to create greater and more sustainable success for Jebsen Industrial, its customers and its partners. This is particularly relevant in today’s volatile market conditions and given China’s pledge to reduce its carbon footprint. It also reflects the business unit’s commitment to society — to making this a better place for people to live, work and play. “We are very confident that we are well equipped for the future. When we allow our vision and resulting strategy to guide our actions today, we are accelerating our journey into the future.”

Jebsen Industrial's Spindle Repair Centre was officially opened in June 2016. With self-owned brands like BelleSalud (left) and co-developed products like the Angenieux Type EZ lenses (right), Jebsen Industrial continues to grow its presence along the value chain.

For the eighth consecutive year, Jebsen Group has published its annual CSR report, which summarises innovative and effective practices in CSR management, business partnerships, environmental conservation, staff well-being, and philanthropy for the year 2015.

In 2015 Jebsen invested HK$4.5 million in CSR activities and helped organise a total of 62 philanthropic activities, garnering a total attendance of almost 900 people and raising HK$250,000 in funds for various beneficiaries. This includes its very own Life is Art programme, which hopes to enrich the lives of less privileged children by introducing them to different forms of art.

As an environmentally friendly organisation, the Group has also maintained carbon neutrality in 2015 by supporting two climate friendly projects and purchasing over 7,200 tonnes of carbon credit to offset its 2014 emissions. The sight-saving mission continues After a successful Phase I, Jebsen Group is pushing ahead with Phase II of its flagship CSR programme, Project Morning Star in collaboration with internationally-recognised NGO, ORBIS International. From 2016 to 2020, the Group will commit RMB 7.4 million towards constructing China’s first “National Model of Comprehensive Rural Eye Care Network”, initiated by the National Institute of Hospital Administration (NIHA). The project will select six county hospitals across China as pilot sites and by 2020, it is expected that ophthalmology treatment at county-level hospitals will be comprehensively improved, patient volume and operation rates will double, and a sustainable, profitable model will be realised.

As a donation partner, Jebsen will also support ORBIS and co-branded activities in Hong Kong. In addition, employee participation will continue to be emphasised through volunteer visits to Project Morning Star’s sites. “Jebsen Group hopes to deepen the impact of our sight-saving mission to benefit even more eye patients, and for them to lead to healthier and more fulfilling lives,” said Mr Helmuth Hennig, Jebsen Group Managing Director.

9CONNECTING

MINDSLeadership Journey

The new Code takes into consideration the laws and regulations in the locations where the Group operates and is structured around the Group’s core values, people, workplace and business practices. A principle-based document, it establishes the expected behaviour of the Group as a whole, as well as each individual member of the organisation. This is important because doing business in a fair, aboveboard and ethical manner is not only mission critical to safeguard the credibility and reputation for the Group, it is also important to individual staff members.

“Having strong work ethics is the foundation for a successful career,” said Ms Bianca Wong, Group Human Resources & Corporate Communications Director. “Our performance and achievements can only be recognised when we act honestly and conduct business with integrity.”

As every employee is expected to understand and adhere to the principles and standards set out in the Code, the Group has developed a suite of resources to help its people. In addition to Information Boxes and Question & Answer segments in the Code, company policies and procedures, guidelines, manuals and workflows are also being developed to supplement the Code. The Group will also continue to conduct compliance training for its people on a regular basis.

As Group Managing Director, Mr Helmuth Hennig said, “Jebsen’s success over the past 120 years is built on the hard-earned reputation of being a compliant and trustworthy organisation.” “This is, in turn, anchored on a strong internal foundation of trust and responsibility. The new Code of Ethics and Business Conduct will be an invaluable resource for us to guide us in always doing the right things,” concluded Ms Bianca Wong.

Jebsen Group has a Speaking Up policy that encourages people to report suspected illegal, unethical or inappropriate conduct via a confidential Malpractice Reporting Channel ([email protected]) which is monitored by Group Internal Audit (GIA) daily, and reports are directly made to the Board. All correspondence through the channel will be kept strictly confidential and information are reviewed independently to ensure objective investigation and protection to the whistleblowers.

Navigating the right course Ms Bianca Wong, Group Human Resources & Corporate Communications Director, explains the thinking behind the Group’s revised Code of Ethics and Business Conduct.

With increasing business complexity and shifting regulatory requirements, Jebsen Group has taken a proactive stance in ensuring that it continues to operate with the highest standards of ethics, integrity and compliance. It has revised its Code of Ethics and Business Code, which came into effect across the Group on November 1, 2016.

Ms Bianca Wong, Group Human Resources & Corporate Communications Director, believes that good work ethics is essential for both organisational and individual success.

Having strong work ethics is the foundation for a successful career.”

Apple Peng’s first step into Jebsen Group was as a receptionist. It was 1999 and the Group had just opened a new office in Guangzhou. Five years later, she transferred to Jebsen Fine Wines as a Marketing Assistant. It was a new industry and a totally different role but Apple was excited, rather than intimidated, by the opportunity.

“At that time, Jebsen Fine Wines had just entered the Guangzhou market. The team was small, so I had to take care of many things, including marketing, logistics, customer service and even account reconciliation. I was very busy every day but I enjoyed every moment,” she shared.

Her hard work paid off and she was later promoted to Sales Admin Supervisor. Looking back, Apple said: “To maintain professional and effective relationships with our customers, I had to acquire product knowledge, understand our portfolio and familiarise myself with customer information – none of this came easily to me. To ensure smooth cooperation between departments, I also spent time studying policies and procedures that are critical to daily operations.”

“Whether I am a Receptionist, a Marketing Assistant or a Sales Admin Supervisor, I believe I can add value to the company every day. My motivation comes from my work philosophy – to always contribute my best.”

Leaving Jebsen has never crossed my mind. Even when I reached retirement age, I made the choice to rejoin Jebsen.

Success Breeds Success

“In a blink of an eye, I have journeyed with Jebsen for 46 years,” recounts Richard Cheng, who took on his present role as Facilities Supervisor in 1992 after a stint as a messenger and in the cargo service department.

“From my career journey, you can see that Jebsen offers many opportunities for its people to experience new roles and responsibilities. It has become a second home to me and my colleagues are like my family members. Over time, Jebsen has taught me the importance of always keeping an open mind. I believe my willingness to try new things has allowed me to gain a lot of knowledge. Today, I enjoy using my experience to help my colleagues. Some of them call me ‘Mr Fix-it-All’ but that is an overstatement. I am just an experienced old guard who wants to help the team.”

From May to September 2016, Jebsen employees were treated to a series of wellness seminars as part of the Group’s commitment to caring for staff well-being. This culminated in October, which was designated as "Wellness Month".

During "Wellness Month", a variety of booths were set up in Jebsen offices across Hong Kong and Mainland China. Over 930 staff enthusiastically took part in the health activities, which ranged from free blood lipids profile tests, blood pressure measurements and BMI tests in Hong Kong to lung clearing therapy in Mainland China. For the latter, a professional therapist was engaged to use hydrotherapy and an ultrasonic atomiser to improve respiratory conditions. There were also foot spine checks by a foot orthotic specialist and thyroid ultrasounds by doctors.

Through "Wellness Month", Jebsen hopes to inspire its people to adopt a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a balanced diet.
