After the Flood

By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he con-demned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

“Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.” – Gen. 9:1

After the Flood

Gen. 9:1 repeats Gen. 1:28 up to the word “earth”. Struggle with carnality renewed.

“and subdue it, and have dominion” is not repeated – see Gen. 8:21 – dominion over carnality and sin was lost in Gen. 3.

Animals were subdued under Noah in the ark (cp. Gen. 2:19-20), but now would fear man.

Fear was a product of sin – Gen. 3:10. Where sin rules, man is not entitled to peace

(Isa. 57:21) – Lev. 26:22.

A new beginning with a difference

Hos. 5:14 - “For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue him.”

Yahweh as a Lion

Hos. 11:10 - “They shall walk after the LORD: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.”

Hos. 13:7-8Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them: I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.

After the Flood

Carnality and rebellion resulted in the rise of wild beasts against man – 2 Kings 17:25.

There arose a need for walled cities to provide protection – hence city building revived.

The early Assyrian kings gained their position and power by their ability as hunters.

Over-arching Principle - Ex. 21:23 – “…life for life” (Num. 35:31: Deut. 19:21).

Vengeance for blood-shedding

Cain the first murderer escaped with his life. Murderous violence – hallmark of pre-flood era. The flood was God’s response – life for life. Present – “as it was in the days of Noah”.

V.5 - Anticipates the work of Christ – destroying the diabolos – “him that had the power of death” – Heb. 2:14.

Redemption through every man’s brother

Forms when raindrops separate white sunlight into a spectrum.

As sunlight passes through a drop of water, it is first bent and then reflected from the back surface of the drop toward the viewer’s eye.

The amount of bending, known as refraction, differs for light of different colours. Red light bends the least and violet light bends the most.

Primary rainbows have red on the outside arc; the colours of secondary bows are reversed.

“There are therefore two sorts of colours: the one original and simple, the other compounded of these. The original or primary colours are red, yellow, green, blue, and a violet-purple, together with orange, indigo, and an indefinite variety of intermediate graduations.”

Gen. 9:16 – “everlasting covenant” – olam berith – used together 14 times O.T. (certainty of covenant) and once N.T. – Heb. 13:20.Bro. Thomas (Eureka) – “The first place in which this covenant is alluded to is in Gen. 6:18; it does not follow, however, that no covenant existed till the time therein indicated. Yahweh had a covenant which he styled, “My covenant.” It was on account of this covenant that the race of Adam was perpetuated in Noah.”

Seven colours represents various manifestations of complete divine glory.

Completely circular (half unseen) = eternal life. Formed by refraction of sun’s rays through

raindrops – product of light. Sun = Christ (Mal. 4:2). Clouds = saints (Rev. 1:7; Heb 12:1). Rain = outpouring of spirit (Joel 2:23; Deut;

32:2; Ps. 72:6). Symbol of Christ and saints in glory bringing

blessings of God’s covenant to all flesh.

Only 6 references to the rainbow in 4 contexts in Scripture. All occurrences follow a time of Divine judgement and the introduction of peace to the earth. The vision of Ezek. 1:28 is the basis of Rev. 4 – the Cherubim at the end of their militant work now become kings and priests.
