Volda University College is located in a small town, but our perspective is international.

In 2015 we have reached an all-time high number of students: Almost 4.000 young people have decided to join the college. We are also very happy to receive more than 100 new international students - as well as encouraging an equal number of our students to travel abroad as part of their studies. The last twenty years we have received students from more than 100 countries. They come to Volda, a peaceful yet vivid local community, not least because of a creative and diverse body of students attending programmes within humanities and social sciences: Becoming teachers, social workers or attending our diverse portfolio of media and cultural studies: Journalism,

animation, strategic design, media design, music, theater and drama, sports and outdoor activities.

In a small university college in a small local community there is plenty of room for you to explore and develop yourself and others, within your studies or through the many student organisations. If you can´t find it - create it!

8 INTRODUCTION

LONG TRADITIONSThe university college was originally founded 150 years ago, as the first teacher training college in rural Norway. Today, it offers one PhD programme (joint degree with Molde University College), six Master’s programmes, more than 30 undergraduate programmes and about 450 courses. The studies offered are varied and include among others: media and communication, general and pre-school teacher training education, social sciences, child care, social planning and governance, as well as literature, linguis tics, math and science, history, arts and crafts, outdoor life and physical education, music and drama.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENTVolda University College puts a lot of emphasis on research and development. The latter provides a solid foundation for the education offered in Volda. Strategic areas include media and journalism, cul-tural encounters, professional practices, edu cational research, welfare studies and applied arts. The nature of the research varies from individual programmes to applied development projects, conducted in close cooperation with end users.

MODERN FACILITIESFirst class IT equipment is easily accessible in any of

the numerous computer rooms on campus. There is a wireless network open to all students. The library is modern and offers access to books and periodicals from around the world. All around the campus there are fully equipped special purpose rooms such as radio and TV studios, drama rooms, group study and workshop rooms, an animation studio etc.

COMPACT CAMPUSAll the buildings are within five minutes walking distance of each other, and very close to the student accommodation. The sports hall is across the street from the university college buildings and gives students the opportunity to use the sports facilities (from swimming pool to fitness and bodybuilding studio, and an indoor sports hall).

INTERNATIONALVUC collaborates with over 100 international universities and research institutes around the world, through student exchanges, research, staff exchanges and more. All our students have the option of taking part of their degree at universities abroad, as well as being part of an international campus with over 200 international students.

STIVThe Student Parliament is the highest official student body at VUC. It works continuously towards improving student life in Volda.

PANGAIAA unique office, home away from home for many students, Pangaia is the perfect place to relax, make friends, sign up for activities, events and trips, or play games. Pangaia is run by an international student trainee, under the umbrella of the International office. Some of the activities organized for students are international nights, karaoke events, day tours and hiking in the area, movie nights etc.

STUDENT HOUSE ROKKENThe student house is known as the gathering place for all the students on campus. Apart from the cafeteria, which serves food at student prices, the concert hall hosts a series of social events such as concerts, open mic nights, live sport broadcasting and various cultural programmes.

NEVER A DULL MOMENT

Volda University College is known for its lively academic and social environment. After a long day in the reading rooms, it is always amazing to go hiking in the

mountains, swim in the fjord or simply enjoy the wonders of nature.

PEIKESTOKKENThe student magazine keeps the community informed on everything that happens in Volda and its surroundings. All students on campus, regardless of their background, are invited to be part of the editorial team.

STUDENT-TVThe broadcast is made by students, for students. Whether you are interested in writing the script, being a news anchor, being cast in fiction movies or making news reports, being the official photographer or working on layout and graphics, you are welcome to become a part of the crew.

VOLDA STUDENT RADIOThe students’ own radio channel transmits every evening from 19:00. Stories, reports and news are made by students with the number one goal of transforming the relatively small radio station into the single most attractive student radio in Norway.

NATURAOne of the student organizations on campus, Natura, is responsible for organizing mountain hiking tours, surfing and cabin trips, as well as various other outdoor activities.

VSIThe students’ sports organization (VSI) invites its members to work out in the sports hall, and offers handball, indoor football, indoor hockey, volleyball and badminton. Their members also have access to the swimming pool and bodybuilding and fitness facilities.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAThe only symphony orchestra in the country connected to a university college has a broad repertoire of popular music, symphonic music and church works.

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE CHOIRDo you like to sing? You are warmly invited to become a member of the college choir.

KRIKOffers an active environment, with a strong focus on Christian values and a love of physical education.

VOKSVolda Christian Student Organization wishes to be including and an actor in the integration process of student life in Volda.

BUDDY WEEKEvery semester many new and eager students meet in Volda. Some are newcomers, others are back for their second, third or fourth year in Volda. The main buddy week is organized at the beginning of the academic year, in August. It is marked by many outdoor

activities, competitions, games and introductory meetings. For the international students arriving in Volda for the spring semester, a smaller welcome programme is organized in January.

INTERNATIONAL WEEKThe International Office organizes an International Week every February with guests from all over the world. Workshops, seminars and guest lectures are held all week.

DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVALNorway’s oldest and biggest annual documentary film festival attracts many national and international participants and fans. Between fifty and sixty films are presented during the festival. Producers, students and audiences enjoy days of quality documentary cinema.

ANIMATION VOLDAThe university college has a nationally and internationally renowned animation department. It educates some of the most creative and skilled animators in Norway. The Animation Festival offers the opportunity to take part in the creative atmosphere in Volda, with national and international participation. The programme is spiced with workshops, world premieres, and distinguished guests from the world of animation.

ISUInternational Student Union at VUC embraces diversity and welcomes all students, both international and Norwegian, to its activities. ISU Norway is committed to the social, academic and political interests of all international students studying in Norway. It is an independent, democratic, non-profit, non-partisan organization run by and for international students and interested Norwegians.

With a population of over 9000 inhabitants and a student body of approximately 4000 students (about 2000 on-campus students), Volda is a charming town in the county of Møre og Romsdal. Although the main employers are the university college and the local hospital, Volda is known for its traditional occupations of farming, fishing, forestry and aquaculture.

Volda is famous for its strong cultural heritage and academic traditions. The center is a charming area, located right on the shores of Voldafjorden. There are many old wooden buildings - both commercial and residential - but at the town’s heart is a beautiful stone church, built in the 1930’s.

THE SUNNMØRE ALPSThe beautiful alpine mountain areas in the vicinity of Volda are called the Sunnmøre Alps, and stun nature lovers. Some of the peaks reach as high as 1700 meters straight up from the fjord, of which the most well-known are Slogen, Kolåstinden, Hornindalsrokken, Skårasalen and Råna. The Sunnmøre Alps offer unique terrain for hiking, and are visited by large numbers of tourists in both summer and winter.

GEIRANGERGeiranger is the jewel in the crown of the Norwegian

fjords. It is so unique that it has been included on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. It is a fairy-tale land-scape with its majestic, snow-covered mountaintops, wild and beautiful waterfalls, lush green vegetation and the deep, blue fjord (geiranger.no).

ÅLESUNDApproximately 90 minutes away from Volda, you find the Art Nouveau city of Ålesund. Mount Aksla, with the viewpoints Fjellstua and Kniven, is one of Ålesund’s biggest attractions. The views of the town, the lovely islands and the majestic Sunnmøre Alps further inland are simply fantastic.

GETTING HEREVolda is 50 minutes away from the capital Oslo by plane to the local airport, Hovden. There are several daily flights to and from Oslo and Bergen, and buying a youth ticket is the most affordable option. Also, flights from major cities in Norway to Ålesund (Vigra) are available daily, but keep in mind the cost of the extra bus trip from Vigra airport to Volda (wideroe.no, sas.no, norwegian.no). A more traditional way of getting to Volda is by bus. The regular night bus from Oslo takes 10 hours to reach Volda, but you are guaranteed a seat on any departure (nettbuss.no).

Situated on the western coast of Norway, Volda is surrounded by alpine peaks, fjords and sea.

Vera Zverinova from the University of Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic, studied English language and literature

in Volda because she wanted to broaden her knowledge.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

COMFORTABLE ATMOSPHERETeaching takes the form of lectures, exercises, group work and individual work. Working in groups provides a good learning environment, and makes it easier to get to know the other students.

– Working in groups was quite a new thing for me. I really liked this approach because it taught me not to be afraid to speak my opinion. The teachers paid a lot of attention to us students and were always kind and helpful. The study atmosphere in Volda is very comfortable.

At her home university, she studies English and French for Tourism. In Volda, she wanted to expand her knowledge of the English language and chose to study phonetics, literature and culture.

– I chose these courses because I love the English language, its pronunciation and learning about the differences in different parts of the world. In my home university we learn a lot about the history, literature and culture of the English speaking countries, so I chose the literature subject as well, to enhance my knowledge.

Indian student Kishore Gajendra chose to study in Volda because the university college offered an academic programme that matched

what he wanted to study – Norwegian and Religion.

NORWEGIAN LITERATURE AND CULTURE

In the course Religion and Culture in Norway, he gained knowledge about the most central aspects of the development of Christianity in Norway since the Middle Ages and onwards.

– Coming from a diverse culture like India, I was fascinated by, and eager to learn about the Norwegian culture, religion and its history. Tracing back Norway’s religion with Lutheranism as a central topic, we discussed several key topics like ‘Norwegian values’, ‘religious education’ and ‘free churches` in our classes.

TEACHERS WITH DIFFERENT SPECIALIZATIONSThe course addresses the major development of religion in Norway, from homogeneity to multiculturalism.

– The classes were taught by several teachers who are specialized in different areas, including history

of Christianity in Norway, religion and education, Lutheranism, the Norwegian state church, religious freedom, and also multiculturalism and its effects on the present. This gave us an insight into how detailed and enormous the subject is.

RELIGION FROM DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVESThere were students from Norway, other parts of Europe and Asia attending the courses.

– One of the most exciting aspects of this course was the fact that students came from different parts of Europe and Asia. This enabled us to have an interesting discussion in class about our countries, religions, traditions and values. Our teacher created a pleasant atmosphere in class where all the students could contribute to the topic of discussion. We had several debates in class that urged all students to voice their opinions and talk about their own cultures and backgrounds.

– Making friends from all over the world, experiencing Norwegian culture, and being surrounded by Norway’s natural beauty are just a few examples of all Volda

has to offer, says Corinne Kazoleas.

ARTS

Corinne is studying for a Bachelor of Arts at California State University Fullerton, USA. She is staying in Volda for a year, and during her first semester, she studied Visual Communications.

TWO-DIMENSIONAL FORMA central topic in the course Visual Communications is working with two-dimensional form using different tools, materials and techniques. It focuses on formal aesthetic knowledge, where form, colour and signs are an important part of the course.

– Although I do not study Visual Communication at my home university, taking the class here in Volda has certainly had its benefits, both inside and outside the classroom due to the practical nature of this course. We focused primarily on visual grammar, which essentially just puts names and definitions

behind the visually communicated messages we see every day in things like marketing campaigns, advertisements, and event promotions. On top of working to convey our own messages visually, we also learn about how to use what appeals to people to communicate in a more effective way, says Corinne.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONTeaching methods include a combination of lectures, individual problem solving and self-study.

– All the classes I have taken in Volda include practical application. I have been able to learn much, both beyond and inside the classroom. It is not enough to just remember every detail or simply summarize what you are told, professors work with you to learn the material and be able to use the skills in real life, no matter what the subject is.

Miquel Rial Sole is studying communication and journalism at his home university, in Spain. In Volda, he found a course

where he can combine his studies with his interest for nature.

SPORTS AND NATURE

Miquel is taking the course Outdoor Media Production. The course has a special focus on film, photo and other new audiovisual expressions. The students work on communicating various concepts and representations from workshop locations.

– We learn how to create good videos outside. We take advantage of amazing places that we visit and the nature which surrounds us; doing reports, web blogs, movies and all kind of audiovisual projects.

INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSEThe course is interdisciplinary and includes students from the Media programmes and the Outdoor Education programmes.

– We work in small groups and our videos are mainly about outdoor life, but with different purposes for each activity.

OUTSIDE LESSONSThe students go on three field trips lasting several days during the course, which makes for a very different study environment than what Miquel is used to from his home university.

– We have the lessons outside. I learn a lot from my four teachers because they are so experienced. You can talk to them about any doubts you may have, and they try to help you as much as possible.

– I study media because I want to know what is going on in the world. This is not a study that focuses only on theory, as the practical part

is very important in this field.

MEDIA STUDIES

Nadine Claes studies Journalism at the Erasmus University College in Brussels, Belgium. She is in Volda for one semester.

– In some Belgian universities, you have to choose between TV, Radio or Writing. In Volda, you can get insight into all three subjects. I love how you can spread information, news or your thoughts through different mediums in different ways.

DESIGN AND PHOTONadine chose to study the courses Strategic Design and Photo for Media.

– Photo for Media is a course that is useful for my studies at home. I also chose Strategic Design because it is different to pure journalism.

In Photo for Media, the students are supposed to acquire fundamental skills in photography and

picture handling based on a digital platform, in the same way that photography is practised in the world media today. This includes handling of physical and electronic tools used in the production of photographic images, as well as a basic understanding of journalistic visual communication and the ethics connected to this.

REAL CUSTOMERSStrategic Design is about using design, visual arts, arts, humanistic and cultural thinking, psychology, and several other areas, to support the achievement of strategic business goals. Students work mainly in groups to solve various assignments, and in some projects they work with real customers.

– Strategic Design is something different than pure journalism. We can really be creative in this course and go crazy coming up with ideas.

Christina Thurow from the University of Applied Sciences in Kiel, Germany, chose to stay for a full academic year in Volda. She graduates with

a double degree, as the result of a collaboration between Volda University College and her home university.

PHOTOGRAPHY

lectures, seminars and tutoring which takes place during five weeklong gatherings. Students complete a series of coursework requirements between the gatherings, which are handed in electronically at set deadlines.

– During the course we worked on four different topics. In the lectures, we analysed and discussed our work, and were given useful feedback from the highly experienced Magnum photographer, Stuart Franklin.

MIXED CLASSESChristina enjoyed the small town and the student environment in Volda.

– The courses are very practically oriented and based on useful theoretical foundations. The classes were a mix of international and Norwegian students, so it was great to share experiences and learn from each other.

In Kiel, she studies Multimedia Production with a focus on film. In Volda, she wanted to learn more about a different field of media and chose to study Photography.

PHOTO FOR MEDIAThe course introduces you to the physical laws behind photographic image production, with practical exercises designed to explore the problems and benefits connected to these facts. The course also explores the fundamental rules regarding composition of visual elements and the communicative effects of photographic images.

– Photo for media taught me the basics of photography. This was useful in the next semester when I chose the course ‘Documentary Photography’. The teaching on this course is offered in the form of lectures, individual exercises and plenum discussions.

– Volda University College gave me the space, material and pedagogic support I needed to improve my skills in puppet animation. Thanks to the huge support

from professional teachers, I am now determined to become a puppet animator.

ANIMATION

Many of the animation teachers in Volda have international experience from the animation industry. This was one of the main reasons Marie Lechevallier from France, chose to study animation in Volda.

– The teachers are very passionate and professional, and the equipment is high-end. We had easy access to the college buildings, and we could make our own projects if we wanted to. Regular meetings were organized to follow the progress of each project.

STOP-MOTION One of the biggest projects Marie worked on was a stop-motion animated short which was created in an old-school way by using puppets.

– «Frankulstein», a reimagining of the 1931 film Frankenstein, was done as a collaboration between

the Animation department and ULSTEIN, a company that designs and builds high technology ships. It was a large-scale project with a team of six students from different backgrounds. The project has later been selected for various festivals, including the 2015 edition of the internationally renowned Animafest Zagreb.

Marie is glad she chose to study in Volda. After her studies here, she was selected for a short animation course at the National Film and Television School in cooperation with Aardman Studio in the UK. This is recognized as one of the best stop-motion studios in Europe.

ANIMATION VOLDA The Animation Volda Festival is held every year in September, and is arranged and hosted by students in Volda.

– To study in Volda is a great opportunity. I improve my English and also learn Norwegian.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Antonio García Serón studies History at his home university, University of Malaga. In Volda, he studies European Union and Regional Development this semester, and he is planning to stay for the full academic year.

– It is very interesting to learn how the European Union works, and how the funds from the European Union are used in the poorest regions of Europe.

The courses are a mix of lectures, discussions, group exercises and presentations of papers by students. An excursion is also arranged to a member country of the European Union. This is to illustrate the practice of EU policies and their impact on a member country.

INFORMAL STUDY ENVIRONMENTIn Volda, Antonio is experiencing a less formal and

more personal study environment than he is used to in Spain.

– The teachers are really involved during the learning process of the students. They provide us with a lot of feedback to improve our papers, and also our knowledge about the subject.

GOOD FACILITIESAntonio had never visited Norway before he came to Volda, and quickly decided to stay for a whole year.

– The university has many interesting study programmes for international students, and a lot of resources and facilities. As an exchange student, I feel a relaxing and incredible atmosphere here. The landscape is amazing.

LONG TRADITIONSVUC has long traditions of teaching Norwegian language and culture to international students. Our faculty members have authored books and are internationally active in the Scandinavian Studies community. The university college is also a national center for Nynorsk in education.

Volda is known for its schools and intellectual

environment. The secondary school in Volda was the first one established outside a major city, the Egset library was the first rural library in Norway and the local newspaper was established as early as 1810. Our area is also viewed as the birthplace of Nynorsk, the second official language of Norway.

IDEALLY LOCATEDVolda and the surrounding areas highlight the traditional Norway: the coastal farms, the fishing industry, glaciers, a church in every village, Viking ship traditions, bunad and kransekake. Yet, at the same time, the area also illustrates the modern Norway through high-tech marine industry, international work force and foreign impulses in architecture, food and media. Here you are ideally located to study the past and present of Norwegian society.

– In the academic year of 2013/2014, I was an Erasmus student in Volda. After I was done with my exchange experience,

I knew that I wanted to stay in Norway.

ONE-YEAR COURSE IN NORWEGIAN LANGUAGE

Luis Lopez Acien from Universidad de Sevilla in Spain wanted to learn Norwegian and applied for the one-year course in Norwegian Language and Civilization.

– The course was my best opportunity to learn Norwegian.

INTENSIVE LANGUAGE PREPARATIONThe course aims to give students knowledge and skills necessary for studies at Norwegian colleges and universities. The emphasis is on giving students good general capabilities in Norwegian language. The course is also meant to make it easier for students to adapt to the Norwegian society.

– Having classes every day helps you keep up the learning rhythm. Teachers are always ready to help and give advice. The class has students from many different countries, but we all share the same goal. This helps us in keeping up a good learning environment.

MASTER’S DEGREE IN JOURNALISMAfter his studies in Norwegian language, Luis plans to take a master’s degree in Pedagogics in Norwegian.

– Beyond the academic advantages that the course offers, it is also an opportunity to learn the Norwegian language and culture at the same time.
