서 효 숙

생명의 에너지와 환희를 발견하는 작가의 시선

미술이 대상의 시각적 재현이라는 표현형식의 굴레에서 해방되었을 때 화가들은 한편으로는 당혹스러우면서도 다른 한 편으로는 시각적 재현이라는 활동영역

을 시적 사유와 심상의 표현이라는 더욱 넓은 지각과 감각의 영역으로 확장시켜갈 수 있는 기회를 잡을 수 있었다. 그리고 이렇게 확장된 작가들의 예술적 영감의

촉수는 주로 종교와 자연으로 포커스를 맞추는 경우가 대부분이었으며 둘 중 어느 경우에도 관심의 중심에는 주로 생명의 문제가 자리잡고 있었다.

화가 서효숙 역시 작가로서의 출발에서부터 지금까지 일관되게 생명의 문제에 집중해왔다. 서효숙은 우리나라의 현대사 가운데 가장 뜨거운 시절이었다고 할

수 있는 1980년대에 미술대학 수업을 마치고 공모전과 국내,외의 단체전을 통해서 작품을 발표해오다가 결혼과 육아로 인해 본격적인 작품활동을 유보해온 작

가로서의 활동 궤적을 그리고 있다.

동시대의 혼란과 좌절을 경험하게 되는 시대에 대학생활을 한 사람들 가운데 상당수가 그러하였듯이 서효숙 또한 자신을 둘러싸고 벌어지는 사회현상의 본질

로 파고들면서 결론적으로 생명의 문제를 화두로 붙들게 되었을 가능성이 높다. 굳이 생명운동을 하는 어느 시인을 인용하지 않더라도 작은 생명체마저 소중하여

그것에 눈길이 가고, 그로부터 우리가 우주의 생명체로서 살아있음을 깨닫고, 그렇기 때문에 서로 사랑하고 아끼며 종교적 헌신을 실천하는 길로 나아가는데 있어

서 서효숙의 도구는 그림이 되었을 것이고, 그 때문에 작가는 육아와 가정생활을 이어가면서도 작품 활동을 포기하지 않았을 것이다.

서울 토박이인 서효숙은 결혼과 함께 청주로 이주하여 그곳에 장착하게 되었다. 작가는 청주에서 생활하면서 발견하는 그곳의 옛 마을의 모습에서 새롭게 생명

에 대한 경외감을 차곡차곡 저장해왔다. 미술대학 졸업 후 작가로서의 활동 초기에도 작가는 인간의 존재나 생명의 문제를 자신의 작품의 중요한 주제로 삼았었지

만 그 당시의 생명이라는 주제는 다분히 관념적이고 형이상학적인 면이 있었던 반면에 최근 다시 붓을 잡은 작가의 시선에 맺히는 자연의 이미지에서는 보다 직접

적이고 체화될 수 있는 생명에 대한 감성이 느껴진다고 할 수 있을 것이다.

모든 물질은 그 자체로 생명이 있으며 스스로의 영혼의 작용에 의해서 살아 있다고 보는 물활론(物活論)에서 흔히 동원되는 방법 가운데 하나는 자연을 의인화

하는 것이다. 우리는 이제까지 시와 음악과 미술에서 이러한 자연의 의인화를 적지 않게 경험해왔다. 그 가운데 꽃은 가장 일반적인 모티브 가운데 하나이며 그많

큼 많은 예술가들로부터 자신들의 작품에 등장하도록 요청을 받아왔다.

서효숙 역시 최근의 작품에서 꽃을 주요 모티브로 사용한다. 그런데 서효숙의 작품에 등장하는 꽃은 이제까지의 대부분의 정물화나 풍경화에서 전체의 모습을

한눈에 볼 수 있도록 일정한 거리를 두고 관찰한 꽃의 모습이 아니라 마치 작가가 꽃과의 물리적 거리를 최소화하여 밀착하려는 듯이 대상에 다가가서 관찰한 모

습으로 표현된다. 꽃잎 하나하나의 모습이 확대경을 들여다보듯이 자세하게 표현된 화면에서 작가는 비록 이름 모를 작은 꽃이지만 그 잎 하나하나의 끝부분이 강

렬한 에너지를 분출하는 듯하게 빳빳한 모습으로 표현되며 그러한 잎들 하나하나에 마치 초월적 존재의 축복처럼 내려앉는 햇빛의 모습을 곁들인 화면에서 관람

자들은 자연스럽게 생명의 주제와 성장과 부활을 떠올릴 수 있게 된다.

그리스의 철학자 탈레스는 이 세상의 모든 사물에는 신(神)이 깃들어 있다고 보았으며 스트라톤은 모든 사물은 곧 모든 정신적인 존재가 물질로 환원된 것이라

고 보았다. 그러므로 오래된 마을의 담장 밑에 피어난 이름 모를 꽃이나 그 꽃에 내려앉는 햇볕도 모두 스스로의 내부에 존엄한 정신과 신을 내포하고 있는 셈인

것이다. 서효숙은 이러한 생명, 살아있는 것들의 울림에 애정의 시선을 보내는 것이다.

이번 전시에서 소개되는 서효숙의 작품 가운데에는 이처럼 꽃과 같은 사물을 접사(接寫)의 시각으로 다가가서 관찰한 화면 이외에도 전체 화면 안에 작게 구획

된 화면이 설정되어 이중적인 이미지가 한 화면 안에 제시되는 더블 플롯 형식의 작품들도 있다. 이러한 형식의 작품은 화면의 다양성을 가져다주며 동시에 두 가

지 이상의 메시지를 담을 수 있다는 장점이 있지만, 더블 플롯 형식의 소설의 전개가 그러하듯이 두 개의 메시지가 필연적으로 상관성을 가져야 하며 결국에는 하

나로 합류하게 된다는 점을 염두에 두어야 한다. 따라서 서효숙의 작품에서 꽃과 나비, 하늘과 꽃, 햇빛이 내려앉은 담장과 꽃 등으로 표현되는 이중적 화면은 결

국 작가가 말하고 있는 것처럼 일상의 소소한 사물과 현상에 대한 발견이며 그 속에 내재된 생명과 에너지에 대한 작가의 공감된 시선을 반영하는 것이라는 점에

서 앞에 언급된 화면들과 동일한 주제를 작품 속에 관류시키고 있다고 볼 수 있다.

젊은 시절 의욕적인 창작 활동을 꿈꾸던 작가로서 결혼과 육아의 과정에 의해 유보되었던 본격적인 화가로서의 길을 최근에 새롭게 들어선 서효숙에게 현재의

미술계의 흐름과 지향점은 다소 낯설게 느껴질 수도 있을 것이다. 우리들의 생활이 그렇듯이 새로운 것으로의 첫 발을 내딛는 마음은 설렘과 불안이 교차하기 마

련이다. 그러나 생명을 잉태하고 탄생시켜 성장케 만들어온 어머니의 마음으로 주변의 사물에서 생명의 에너지와 환희를 발견하는 작가의 시선이 사그라지지 않

는다면 서효숙은 지금부터라도 그전처럼 의욕적인 젊은 작가인 것이다.

When art was freed from the restriction of expressional formality of realsim, many artists were preplexed yet considered it as a chance to expand their activities from simply reproducing visually to thinking poetically and expressing imagery which show deeper cognition and sen-sibility in their works. These artistic inspirations were derived from religion and nature which both dealt with the matter of life.

As an artist, Hyo Sook Suh has constantly focused on the matter of life from the beginning of her art career. Graduating from art college in the 1980s, a period considered the most vigorous in our contemporary history, Suh had been presenting a series of her art pieces through various exihibitions. Until recently though, Suh had put aside her career as an artist since her marriage and have devoted herself more on raising the family.

Like many of her colleagues, Suh seems to have examined the essence of the sociopolitical movement that surrounded her college experi-ence, which were in most cases protruded through chaos and frustration. As a result, Suh has developed her notion of life and has walked the path ever since. A touching literary phrase or a poetic verse about nature is unnecessary for one to understand the essence of life; that even the smallest of things are just as important as a living being, for humans are also the smallest compared to the whole universe. As an extension, Suh has used her talent for art to deliver her concept of life and devotion towards it, and such passion is what made her to never give up her career as an artist.

A Seoul native, Suh moved to Cheongju in 1991 after her marriage and settled there for 12years. While living away from the bustling capital, Suh began to build up a new sense of admiration towards life. Although such theme was also evident in her earlier careers, it was presented in different style; the message of life and human nature was composed in abstract and metaphysical fashion. Yet Suh’s latest works reflect a shift in the artist’s conceptual imagery, showing sensibility upon a much more tangible subject of life.

One of the widely used methods in Hylozoism, a philosophical doctrine that all matter is in some sense alive by taking the form of discrete spirits, is to anthromorphize nature. Encountering such a technique has not been rare in the sphere of culture, let it be literature, music or fine arts. Among the motifs magnoliophyta(flower) has been one of the most consistently used by many artists.

Contemporary Artist Hyo Sook Suh has constantly used flowers in her recent works as the main motif. Yet what’s intriguing in Suh’s com-positions is that unlike the banal methods used in many still-life and landscape paintings, which depicts the overall scenery of the blossoms, the artist zooms upon the subject as if she is observing the flower in her hands as she draws. Inside them you can see the detailed depic-tion as if viewed through a magnifier, even the nameless blossoms having upright petals bursting with pure vitality. Sunlight shines above the objects as if divinity itself is in blessing, and appreciators would naturally come to perceive that the paintings resemble the creation and reincarnation of life.

Ancient Greek philosphers like Thales believed that all objects were subject to God, and Straton of Lampsacus viewed the universe as a composition of energy. This indicates that even the most tenuous blossom or the sunshine pouring meekly on it has their own form of internal divinity and energy. Suh has practiced such philosophy on canvas by showing affection to the existence of vitality.

Another artistry Suh shows in her exhibition aside from close-up paintings is to display dual-plot compositions within a single frame; that is, to establish a smaller picture within the main picture. Such a convention brings diversity upon the work and can exhibit more than one theme. Yet in order to be compelling the ideas that are delivered through the composition must inevitably show reciprocality; they must have interrelation with each other, and eventually form unity. Hence the dual plots shown in Suh’s works: blossoms and butterflies, sunshine lighting upon the petals, etc., coincide with the themes mentioned at the beginning, showing appreciation to the rediscovery of energy and life lying underneath the pillars of nature’s smallest of matters and their mutual interaction with one another.

20 years have past since Suh has had her solo exhibition, pushing back her appetitie for creating due to marriage and nurturing. The cur-rent tide and aim of contemporary art may have felt unfamiliar as she decided to buckle down and start her career as an artist once again. The first step to taking a new departure in your life is never easy, mingled with expectations and anxiety. Yet Suh, with her motherhood experience of giving birth to a new life and raising it, would always be the young, enthusiastic artist as she was two decades ago as she continues to show her passion and delight for enlightening the vitality of the things that surround us.
