Mark L. Dzuban
President/CEO
SCTE
As president and CEO of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), Mark Dzuban is continuing a ca-
reer-long commitment to driving change that improves performance, reduces cost and increases customer satisfaction for the
cable industry.
Since joining SCTE in February 2009, Dzuban has been instrumental in positioning the organization as a leader in energy
management and technical education. Under Dzuban, SCTE has instituted the Smart Energy Management Initiative, the
industry’s first comprehensive energy program; was named to receive a Technology & Engineering Emmy® Award; hired
its first CTO; and significantly expanded educational opportunities that range from e-learning courses to the SCTE Lea-
dership Institute with the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
A 2011 recipient of the Vanguard Award, cable’s highest honor, Dzuban has been recognized throughout his career as a
thought leader, particularly in the development of cable telephony and other two-way services. Working across legislative,
financial and engineering areas, Dzuban pioneered the concept and market acceptance of the voice services that today
contribute significantly to cable’s bottom line.
As the first employee of AT&T’s new Broadband Consumer Services group, Dzuban engineered the first full-motion
MSO-to-MSO video telephony call, using the infrastructures of Cox Communications’ San Diego system and TCI of
Westchester (NY), as well as the AT&T network, in 1993. Dzuban also authored numerous presentations on the viability of
cable voice, and was granted a patent for an approach to enhancing cable network survivability for lifeline services such as
telephony.
Dzuban began his career in 1968 as a design engineer for Vikoa, and advanced to leadership positions in such organizations
as Clear Cable and Cross Country Cable. With AT&T, he served as the Bell Labs representative to CableLabs®
from 1992 to
1997, and drove deployment of more than 500,000 cable telephony lines after being promoted to senior vice president of
AT&T Broadband Telephony Operations and Engineering. Prior to joining SCTE, he had served as Vice Chairman of
Cedar Point Communications, a developer and manufacturer of innovative VoIP switching equipment. Dzuban also has
served in advisory positions to a variety of vendors to the cable industry, including ARRIS, Net2Phone/IDT and Broadcom.
Dzuban served in Korea as a Combat Logistics Specialist in the United States Army. He and his wife, Shawn, now live in
the Philadelphia western suburbs.

Plenary Speech 5: From Mobile to Wearable Electronics
Speaker: Dr. T. Gary Yip
Rambus Inc., USA
Time: 15:15-16:00, April 22, 2012
Location: 5th
floor, Three Gorges Hall, Ramada Yichang Hotel
Abstract:
The success of the mobile phone industry in reducing form factor and power consumption has enabled
most people to carry at least one electronic device every day. As we become more connected and more in-
tegrated into our environment, the demand for smaller devices that can be carried by a person will grow.
These wearable consumer electronics, telecommunication and computing devices can work in concert to
support people in their everyday activities, tasks and personal routines. In addition to using his/her own
knowledge and intelligence, decisions and actions can be augmented by information and intelligence that is
hidden in the network. Most of the technology will disappear into our surroundings and only the user inter-
face remains perceivable by users.
There are many fundamental problems in electrical, mechanical and material engineering that need to be
solved before wearable devices can become a reality in practical ways. The applications that will drive the
first high volume production of wearable devices pose many questions that challenge experts in marketing
and product design. Intellectual property resulting from new inventions will be essential to the business
success of wearable electronics.
17
Plenary Speech 6: Growing the Broadband Networks: “Driving Network Diversity,
Energy Consumption and Performance by Design”

Time: 16:10-16:55, April 22, 2012
Location: 5th
floor, Three Gorges Hall, Ramada Yichang Hotel
Abstract:
As cable telecommunications networks deliver more services, the need for long-term planning is more im-
portant than ever. The rapidly increasing demands placed on our broadband networks require us to antic-
ipate how best to meet our customers’ requirements for speed, capacity and reliability, while at the same
time ensuring the availability and efficient use of energy The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engi-
