    * Designing a building this large presented unique challengesbecause Twaiwan is subject to typhoons and earthquakes. Tocounter movement, a tuned mass damper system has been

incorporated into the structure. The 800-metric ton sphericalsteel mass is located on level 87 and is visible from therestaurant and observation decks. The system transfers theenergy from the building to the swinging sphere, providing astabilizing force.

    Design

    * The design of Taipei 101 borrows heavily from Chinese culture. Both the building's interior and exterior incorporate theChinese pagoda form and the shape of bamboo flowers. The

lucky number eight, which means blooming or success, isrepresented by the eight clearly delineated exterior sections

of the building.* Taipei 101s architecture is inspired by traditional Chinese

buildings, labeled by some as Oriental Revivalism. The number8, a symbol for prosperity and luck in China, appears

prominently in the stacked segments of the building, made toresemble the shoots of a bamboo tree. Ancient coins areaffixed to the exterior of the 26th floor and a Feng Shuimaster was consulted as part of the design process.

The tower's lights display one of seven colours in the spectrum. The colours coincide with the days of the week:

Day Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday FridaySaturday

    Sunday
