The Ascension of Christ to Heaven and the Pentecost:

    Their Implication to Believers

Fr. Martin Okafor-Ilozue CSSp - BCBP Mactan BCLP19

If the death of Jesus brought fear to the disciples, Jesus knew that His going backto heaven without appearing to them again would also pose a big problem to them.He told them about the Spirit of truth that He would send to them in order to allayfears and worries and also to encourage them to carry out the mission He gavethem to do. Hence, Pentecost is power from above to be with the disciples, teachingthem, guiding them and given them the strength to face the daily challenges ofpreaching the gospel and living out the demands of being a follower of our Lord

Jesus Christ. The Catholic Encyclopedia elaborates on the ascension of Jesus; Not only is the

fact of the Ascension related in the passages of Scripture Mark 16:19, but it is alsoelsewhere predicted and spoken of as an established fact. Thus, in John6:63,Christ asks the Jews:"If then you shall see the son of Man ascend up where Hewas before?" and 20:17,He says to Mary Magdalen:"Do not touch Me, for I amnot yet ascended to My Father, but go to My brethren, and say to them: I ascend toMy Father and to your Father, to My God and to your God." Again, in Ephesians4:8-10,and in Timothy 3:16, the Ascension of Christ is spoken of as an acceptedfact (Catholic Encyclopedia).

The language used by the Evangelists to describe the Ascension must be inter-preted according to usage. To say that He was taken up or that He ascended, doesnot necessarily imply that they locate heaven directly above the earth; no more thanthe words "sitteth on the right hand of God"mean that this is His actual posture. Indisappearing from their view "He was raised up and a cloud received Him out oftheir sight" (Acts 1:9), and entering into glory He dwells with the Father inthe honor and power denoted by the scripture phrase. (Catholic Encyclopedia)

The implication of His disappearing sorely means that having been out of sight,Jesus should then be and live in our minds and senses, hence realizing what He saidin the Gospel of John, that He will live in us and we in Him. The power of the Spiritwe received at Pentecost will help us to accept this truth about us in relationship withJesus and His Father through the Holy Spirit.

As the new disciples of our Lord Jesus, we will no longer be afraid nor be silentabout what we have read and experienced in our lives, but with the outpouring ofthe Spirit on Pentecost should rather, like the Apostles of old, go out and proclaimHis love to the world, challenging ourselves each day in keeping His commandmentof love. Through the power of the Holy Spirit Jesus did taught us all about the King-dom, let us happily embrace this message of love that is called the good news, liveit out here on earth with the lively hope that it will bring us to eternal life with theTrinity in heaven.

A life filled with love must have some thorns, but a life empty of love will never have roses.

    Chapter Heads Message

    CH Guy and Eden Ceniza

Taken from the daily emails I re-ceived, Verbum-Daily Scripture &Reflection. I was struck by the storyentitled: Life's Struggles, a commonstory that gives meaning and value tolife's struggles

A man found a cocoon of an em-peror moth. He took it home so that hecould watch the moth come out of thecocoon.

On the day a small opening ap-peared, he sat and watched the mothfor several hours as the moth strug-gled to force the body through thatlittle hole. The moth seemed to bestuck and appeared to have stoppedmaking progress. It seemed as if ithad gotten as far as it could and itcould go no farther.

The man, in his kindness, decided to

help the moth; so he took a pair ofscissors and snipped off the remainingbit of the cocoon. The moth thenemerged easily. But its body wasswollen and small, its wings wrinkledand shriveled.

The man continued to watch themoth because he expected that, atany moment, the wings would enlargeand expand to and able to supportthe body, which would contract in

time.Neither happened! In fact, the little

moth spent the rest of its life crawlingaround with a small, swollen bodyand shriveled wings. It never was ableto fly.

The man in his kindness and hastedid not understand that the strugglerequired for the moth to get through

the tiny opening was necessary toforce fluid from the body of the mothinto its wings. This prepares the but-terfly for flight upon achieving itsfreedom from the cocoon.

Freedom and flight would onlycome after the struggle. By deprivingthe moth of a struggle, he deprivedthe moth of health. Sometimes strug-gles are exactly what we need in our

life. If we were to go through our lifewithout any obstacles, we would becrippled.

We would not be as strong aswhat we could have been.

Struggle therefore is part of onesday to day life. God design it for weare precious to him as gold is testedin fire.

The story narrated above is a

wrong notion of kindness which willeventually lead getting the personspoiled; a common situation in most ofus towards our children. We dontwant them to suffer and give themthe best of life our money can buywithout knowing that it is just butproper for them to understand lifesintricacies which will guide to the fu-ture.

As we welcome the opening of

classes, I hope that we will realize theimportance of our children to experi-ence the real life taking considerationon their roles as such. Like the mothour pampering may cripple theirbetter future thus it would be veryimportant to have a reciprocal actionon every situation; a helping handwith responsibility attached to it.
