    We offer Te Pōkaitahi Reo programmes in several locations both on and off campus in Te Tai Tokerau, Tāmaki Makaurau and Whakatāne. Delivery modes can vary including face-to-face day classes, night classes, noho marae, Wānanga and online learning.

    What You Will Study

    Graduates of these programmes will obtain an understanding and awareness of te reo that can be used amongst whānau, hapū, iwi and community as well as in employment. These programmes provide a pathway to develop skills and knowledge to protect, maintain and enrich mātauranga taonga tuku iho for current and future generations from beginners through to intermediate and more advanced levels.

    Programme Overview

    Ko tēnei tohu tūāpapa o te reo he tohu hei whai mā te hunga kātahi anō ka tīmata ki te ako i te reo. He tohu anō hoki tēnei mā te hunga e hiahia ana ki te tautoko i te whanaketanga o tō tātou reo, e ngākaunui ana hoki ki te reo hei reo kawe kōrero i te kainga, i te wāhi mahi hoki rānei, kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori.

    Ka taea e ngā ākonga kua puta ō rātau ihu te whakaputa kōrero, te whakawhitiwhtiti kōrero ā-waha, ā-tuhi tūāpapa anō hoki i ngā horopaki e taunga nei ia.

    Graduates will have a basic understanding and awareness of te reo that can be used amongst whānau, hapū, iwi and community as well as in employment. This programme provides a pathway to develop skills and knowledge to protect, maintain and enrich mātauranga taonga tuku iho for current and future generations.

    Graduates can contribute to community and cultural roles through:

    • Raising awareness of te reo and becoming dedicated and committed speakers of basic te reo in homes within whanau and communities

    • Support the use of te reo amongst whānau and hapū

Ki te tau ngā tauira ki ēnei tātai whakapapa, ka noho ēnei kōrero hei tūāpapa mōna. He tohu anō hoki tēnei mā te hunga e hiahia ana ki te tautoko i te whanaketanga o tō tātou reo, e ngākaunui ana hoki ki te reo hei reo kawe kōrero i te kāinga, i te wāhi mahi hoki rānei, kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori.

    Ka taea e ngā ākonga kua puta ō rātau ihu me ō rātau pūkenga reo te whakaputa kōrero, me te iti o te tautoko, i ngā horopaki e taunga nei ia, i ērā hoki e mauritau ana i roto i te ao Māori.

    This programme is for learners who have a basic understanding and ability in the use of te reo Māori and have a desire to communicate with little support in familiar everyday contexts, and in Māori environments where they feel comfortable.

    Learners will study the following:• Basic Māori vocabulary and grammatical

    structures• Be able to express basic connections to the

    land, environment and people of the area• Apply technical knowledge of foundation

    level reo Māori and develop respect for te reo Māori

    Applicants will sit an assessment test to ensure correct level placement.Note: an inability to answer any questions will not exclude an applicant from the programme. It will show that the applicant should be enrolled in level 1.

    Special Entry Requirements

    In addition to meeting admission requirements, applicants must meet the following requirements to gain entry to this programme:• Has completed a minimum of NZQA Level 1 Te Reo Māori

    qualification; or• Able to successfully complete a Te Reo Māori competency

    assessment as undertaken by Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi; and

    • May be required to attend an interview, or if one lives at some distance from Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi campuses, complete a telephone interview

    Ka taea e ngā ākonga kua puta ō rātau ihu te whakaatu i ngā pūkenga reo, me te māramatanga hoki ki te reo kia pai ai te whakawhiti kōrero, me te takitahi o te tū māia i ētahi wā, i ngā horopaki ā-whānau, ā-marae, ā-hapori, ā-wāhi mahi, ā-wāhi ako hoki rānei; i ērā anō hoki e taunga ana ki a rātau ngā āhuatanga o te ao Māori.

    This programme is intended for learners who have an intermediate-level understanding of, and ability in the use of, te reo. It is also intended for those who have a desire to contribute positively to the development of te reo kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori, or have a personal and/or professional interest in te reo.

    The aims of the programme is for tauira to use te reo:

    • Vocabulary and grammatical structures at an intermediate level as an expression of mana tangata.

    • Māori at an intermediate level to show an understanding of their connections to the land and the environment, prominent places, people, histories and stories, as an expression of mana whenua.

    • Māori at an intermediate level in selected contexts to develop a growing knowledge base of, and an emerging respect for te reo, as an expression of mana reo.

    • Māori at an intermediate level to achieve tasks and guide others in specified contexts as an expression of mana ao turoa.

    Meet the English Proficiency Outcomes as stated below in accordance with the NZQF Programme Approval and Accreditation Rules 2013 if ones first language is not English or who come from a country where the language of instruction is not English and are enrolling as a permanent resident.

    • IELTS test – Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5 • TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) – Score of 500 (with an essay score of 4 TWE) • TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) – Score of 35 (with a writing score of 20) • University of Cambridge ESOL examinations – FCE with a pass at Grade C

    Pūmautanga is to be steadfast and committed to doing the right thing, in the right way, in all that we do with and for Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. All staff and students will support and commit with passion and in a dignified manner to excellence and quality relationships. We will be ethical and will give our best to help sustain the dignity, physical, intellectual and spiritual wellbeing of the people to whom we are responsible.

    Whanaungatanga empowers and connects people to each other and to the wider environment. It reminds us of our reciprocal responsibilities to each other as well as to our vision. We will reach out to all those around us and in doing so we acknowledge the relationships between people and the core elements of our unique principles (toi te kupu, toi te mana, toi te whenua). We also acknowledge and accept our responsibility to always demonstrate respect that will enhance the connections between staff, students and the aspirations of our knowledge community.

    KaitiakitangaKo taku kāinga ko taku wānanga, ko taku wānanga ko taku kāinga

    Kaitiakitanga acknowledges in the first instance the unique obligations and responsibilities that Ngāti Awa have as kaitiaki of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. It also recognises the obligations and accountabilities that all staff and students have to maintain and enhance Awanuiārangi. As kaitiaki of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, all of our decisions will be informed by our vision and āhuatanga, our students and staff, and the organisation’s ongoing sustainability. Students and staff accept responsibility to be accountable in the te ao Māori academic environment, and to our knowledge communities, marae and external stakeholders.
