THE HOLY MYRHH-BEARERS

Today is known as the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearing Women, the women who brought funeral spices and ointments to finish com-mitting Christ’s body to the grave. They were the first to see the empty Tomb and were instructed by the Risen Lord to tell the joyful news of His Resurrection to the Apostles. Ss. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicode-mus are also commemorated with them today. There are 8 women who are generally identified as the Myrrh-bearers. Each of the four Gospels gives a different aspect of their roles at the Lord’s Cross and empty Tomb, perhaps because they arrived in different groups and at different times. They are Mary Magdalene, Mary - the Mother of God and the ever-Virgin, Joanna, Salome, Mary the wife of Cleopas (or Alphaeus), Susanna and both Martha and Mary of Bethany. Of the eight, the first five were more prominent and outspoken, while the last three were included according to Tradition. Five of them were also very wealthy, i.e. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and Martha and Mary of Bethany. A confusing aspect in the Gospel references to these women is that two of the Marys had a son named James. Mary, the wife of Alphaeus, was the mother of James, one of the 12 Apostles while the Virgin Mary was the step-mother of James, the Lord's brother. This James, the brother of the Lord, was the Bishop of Jerusalem from 30-62 AD who never left the vicinity of Jerusalem, and was the one who rendered the decision of the Council of Jeru-salem in 48 AD (Acts 15:13-19). James, the son of Alphaeus, on the other hand, is known with evangelism abroad, especially in Egypt where he was martyred. One helpful tip that can clear up the confusion between these two Marys is the passage that refers to the Virgin Mary as the mother of James and Joseph (Matthew 13:55). This Joseph is also called Barsa-bas, Justus and Judas (Acts 1:23 and 15:22). Therefore, in Matthew 27:56, the women look-ing on from afar at the Cross were Mary Magdalene, the Virgin Mary (i.e. Mary, the mother of James and Joseph) and Salome (the wife of Zebedee and the Virgin Mary's step-daughter). Matthew refers to Mary Magdalene and "the other Mary," as being Mary—the Mother of God, which is evident from the context (Matthew 27:61 and 28:1). Later on Ss. Gregory of Nyssa and Gregory Palamas support this same interpretation. In fact, St. Gregory of Nyssa out right identifies "Mary, the mother of James" as the Virgin Mary. These women had been together much during Jesus' public ministry. Mary Magda-lene, Joanna, Susanna and others (Luke 8:3) are described as providing for Jesus out of their possessions, faithfully following Him from Galilee and having come up with Him to Jerusa-lem (Matthew 27:55, Mark 15:40-41 and Luke 23:55). Let us listen to today’s Feast Day Tro-par:

“Truly, the angel came to the tomb and told the Myrrh-bearing Women: ‘Ointment is fitting for the dead, but Christ has escaped corruption.’

So go out and proclaim, saying: The Lord is Risen, granting great Mercy to the world!’”
