and national benefactors George and Simon Sinas

The few inhabitants of Vlassarous awakened by strange mobility
showed the deserted area of Thissio, at dawn on June 26, 1842.
Mostwalking, others on donkeys and some, a handful, with small
carriages, ascends to the Hill of the Nymphs. Among them the Mayor
ofAthens, Bishop of Attica and President of the Holy Synod, the
teachers of the University, Theodoros Kolokotronis and other
influentialfighters of the Revolution with their fustanellas, army
officers and ordinary citizens. Almost aximerota seemed that the
few thousandresidents of the small Greek capital were heading south
of the Acropolis to the limestone Hill of the Nymphs that surrounds

The location and building Architect Schaubert undertook the
study on the position of the Observatory. At first qualified for
the highest hill of Athens,Lycabettus, but ended up in the Hill of
the Nymphs once access was easier and the project would face fewer
difficulties. Moreover,the wider noisy and crowded area then spread
out floors and private fields. The land was rocky and extremely
secure. The originaldesign of the building presented a medieval
construction style. Revised by Hansen and approved by Otto, he was

Hansen finally awarded to the final design and supervision of the
work was based withsuch magnificence before 170 years.

The young architect has combined the useful with beauty and

Thewalls made of limestone Hill of the Nymphs, corners, pedestals,
the pilasters and architraves of bluish marble of Hymettus. But

Completion By the measures of the era and the Observatory of the
completion time followed the unimpeded financing the project. In

took care to solve the problems arising from the

Theophilus Hansen, he fell in love with Athens, especially the area
of Thissio. Afew years later, when his son George Sina, Simon Sinas
and financed the construction of the Athens Academy, Hansen
proposed to beerected opposite the Observatory, north of the Hill
of the Nymphs, where the chapel of Agios Athanasios Chalkouri.
OBSERVATORY OF TODAY
If the erection of the Observatory took George Sinas, his son
took care of the equipment and its operation with the most modern
ofthe time. Covering the costs for the purchase and shipment of
expensive instruments that made the Athens Observatory par with
therest of Europe Observatory, never failed to secure the necessary
and scientific personnel. This will set the director, in 1858,
Germanastronomer Johann Friedrich Smith July (1825-1884), paying
three times the monthly fee you pay teachers in Greek
Univer-versity.And the queen Amalia will take care of the

botanist M. Bayer. S..Sinas continued to pay on equity all amounts
required for the Observatory but also for many other needs, such as
furniture, scientificpublications, configuration of surrounding
