and national benefactors George and Simon Sinas

To Asteroskopeion Athens. THEOF Plan. Hansen 1842.

    Written by Eleftherios C. Skiadas

The few inhabitants of Vlassarous awakened by strange mobility showed the deserted area of Thissio, at dawn on June 26, 1842. Mostwalking, others on donkeys and some, a handful, with small carriages, ascends to the Hill of the Nymphs. Among them the Mayor ofAthens, Bishop of Attica and President of the Holy Synod, the teachers of the University, Theodoros Kolokotronis and other influentialfighters of the Revolution with their fustanellas, army officers and ordinary citizens. Almost aximerota seemed that the few thousandresidents of the small Greek capital were heading south of the Acropolis to the limestone Hill of the Nymphs that surrounds IP-southwest and west by the hills of Philopappos, Pnyx and the Areopagus. He was six a.m. while evolving a gorgeous-reputationeclipse of the Moon katefthane King Otto with his lieutenants. "The even Theseion position called the Hill of the Nymphs determinedby the erection of Ouranoskopeiou" wrote impressed the newspapers of the time by publishing the news that that morning wasbased work. It was not surprising how a small kingdom in the Balkans, who had just completed ten years of life, without other, moreappropriate, infrastructure, acquire such a magnificent for the time of work as the Observatory.

  • The National Observatory of Athens on the hill of the Nymphs.

The decision of the Third. Sina The generosity Tycoons George Sina, Consul General of Greece in Vienna, was the realization. Without having visited the free Greecehe was already known for his benefits and was honored with the Silver Cross of the Order of Christ. With pride and almoststereotypes wrote in his letters: "As a Greek I wish to become a force in the useful in my Genus'! Looked after opening the shoppingstreets for contracts between Greece and Austria, to protect and serve the Greeks who traveled in Europe and always re-called forways to strengthen above all the cultural foundations of the country.

    Athens Observatory.

His friend Anton Tacks Austen, who was appointed Austrian ambassador to Athens, the pointed out the need for the construction ofan observatory. Astronomy Professor George Vouris undertook the scientific supervision and the young Danish architect TheophilusHansen the realization of the project. And decided the new observatory to be erected near the Pnyx, where he had the famous'Sunflower' of the a-stronomos ancient Meton of Athens.

The Director Johann Friedrich July Smith.

  • The location and building Architect Schaubert undertook the study on the position of the Observatory. At first qualified for the highest hill of Athens,Lycabettus, but ended up in the Hill of the Nymphs once access was easier and the project would face fewer difficulties. Moreover, the wider noisy and crowded area then spread out floors and private fields. The land was rocky and extremely secure. The originaldesign of the building presented a medieval construction style. Revised by Hansen and approved by Otto, he was sent to check onnight-mantikoteres scientific figures in Europe. Hansen finally awarded to the final design and supervision of the work was based withsuch magnificence before 170 years.

    Theofilos Hansen.

The young architect has combined the useful with beauty and panoramic views. Use Greek materials and most Greek craftsmen. Thewalls made of limestone Hill of the Nymphs, corners, pedestals, the pilasters and architraves of bluish marble of Hymettus. But helagged in Pentelic marble. With such constructed capitals, the capes, the cornices, the entire circular base on which rests the domeand the coat of arms of the founder is on the pediment of the facade. The surfaces between the pilasters decorate with performancesmellowed in Greek vase painting style. They depict astronomers Pythagoras and Meton.

    The founder George Sinai.

Completion By the measures of the era and the Observatory of the completion time followed the unimpeded financing the project. In December1845 the el-liniki government paralamvane officially architectural gem that soon made the country known worldwide. In only twoyears (1847-1849) were some six thousand astronomical observations! The Observatory, the oldest research institution in the country, loved by the Athenians who thought since jewel for the city and a favorite walking place.

  • Simon Sinai.

The first manager, George Vouris, watching the construction work took care to solve the problems arising from the inaccessiblelocation and the difficulties of transportation of building materials and water. Philemon When the work was completed he wrote:"Nothing outshines the spacious horizon of the hill of the Nymphs, native and therefore irrefutable rock only limits to the eye thereare tirelessly nature limits. Eastern the pink Hymettus, from west the Parnes, Pentelikon northward and southward humble island ofAegina and the mountains of the Peloponnese "! As for Theophilus Hansen, he fell in love with Athens, especially the area of Thissio. Afew years later, when his son George Sina, Simon Sinas and financed the construction of the Athens Academy, Hansen proposed to beerected opposite the Observatory, north of the Hill of the Nymphs, where the chapel of Agios Athanasios Chalkouri.

    OBSERVATORY OF TODAY

If the erection of the Observatory took George Sinas, his son took care of the equipment and its operation with the most modern ofthe time. Covering the costs for the purchase and shipment of expensive instruments that made the Athens Observatory par with therest of Europe Observatory, never failed to secure the necessary and scientific personnel. This will set the director, in 1858, Germanastronomer Johann Friedrich Smith July (1825-1884), paying three times the monthly fee you pay teachers in Greek Univer-versity.And the queen Amalia will take care of the configuration of the garden surrounding the Observatory using the botanist M. Bayer. S..Sinas continued to pay on equity all amounts required for the Observatory but also for many other needs, such as furniture, scientificpublications, configuration of surrounding roads etc. The eviction of Otto ethlipse the Sina. Keep benefactors his homeland, especiallythe issue of ANE-erection of the Academy commissioned to his heirs. But when he was crowned king George I sent his resignationfrom the embassy-tive position and communicated it to Otto, who expressed his gratitude "by Tash many coarse benevolence, letepidapsilefsate the ELDR-Tatis Elladi us."
