Dear Lincoln Centennial Families,

While the weather has been generally mild this winter, it is wonderful to

see and feel the warmth and sunshine of spring! Spring is a time to reju-

venate.

We must remember that the weather can still be unpredictable. Please

make sure that your children are prepared for school and outdoor play by

wearing layers.

April is often a wet month. As our field may be wet,

it is important to keep a pair of indoor shoes for

school use to help keep our school mud-free.

School Council Spring Event!

Save the date! School Council is planning a MOVIE NIGHT for May 18th. Students and their families are welcome to come out, in their PJs and enjoy a fun family movie. More details to follow in the upcoming weeks!

EQAO update: Our grade 3 and 6 students are engaged in a variety of EQAO preparatory activities both in large and small groupings. Please note that EQAO testing will take place beginning Tuesday, May 23rd until Tuesday, June 6th. If you have a child in Grades 3 or 6, please plan any appoint-ments around these dates.

The Character Trait for March is COURAGE. Courage can look like many things. It might be stand-ing up to a peer to do the right thing, presenting stu-dent work in front of the class or taking a risk to try a new strategy to solve a math problem. Public Health Message...

Keeping your child’s teeth healthy

Children can receive a free fluoride varnish application from the Niagara Region Public Health dental program. Fluoride var-

nish is a protective coating that is painted onto the teeth with a tiny brush. It helps reduce cavities if applied twice a year.

Why do we recommend fluoride varnish?

Tooth decay is the number one chronic disease of children

In the 2015/2016 school year over 25,000 school-aged children were screened by Public Health. 39 per cent of those

school-aged children were identified having as having cavities.

Untreated cavities can lead to difficulties eating and sleeping, self-esteem issues, decreased school performance and attend-

ance, pain, discomfort, infection and poor overall health

Fluoride is not added to Niagara’s drinking water

Tips to keep your child’s teeth healthy…

Brush teeth two times per day

Use a pea-sized portion of fluoride toothpaste

Spend two minutes brushing each time with help from an adult

Floss daily

Provide a healthy diet and limit sugary drinks, sticky candy and snacks. Water is best.

Schedule regular dental checkups at least once a year (cleaning, fluoride varnish application and sealants).

Each spring before we open our playground for use, we conduct

an inspection to ensure that it is in safe

condition after enduring the winter weather.

At times, the playground may be closed due to weather condi-

tions or if there are concerns with the equipment.

At this time, the playground is open for use!

Please help us to ensure your child’s safety when playing on the

equipment outside by providing your child with appropriate run-

ners and clothing free of drawstrings.

A reminder that supervision on the playground begins at 8:40am and ends each day at 3:20pm. That

means that “school rules” are in effect during this time.

JUNIOR CO-ED BASKETBALL

Our Junior Co-ed Basketball Team has been working hard to develop their skills! Congratulations to Anthony, Alex, Maryam, Kaylin, Judy, Emad, Ivan, Dalen, Ivy-Lyn, Amira, Felix, Hatim, Cole, Ellie, Tamara, Sartak, Lenny, Eric, Nihal, Trinity and Natalie for their dedication and consistent effort. A big thank you to Mr. Lemon, Ms. O’Neill and Mrs. Anderson for their coaching expertise.

Join the Lincoln Centennial Team for the 12th Annual Rankin Cancer Run! The 1K/5K walk/run will take place on Saturday, May 27th. The registration deadline to be a part of the Lincoln Cen-tennial team is Friday, May 5th. Student registrations are $10 and adult registrations are $20. Included in this registration fee is a t-shirt and a BBQ for all participants following the race. All money raised goes to supporting cancer care in the Niagara Region. We all know someone affected by cancer. Let's work together to support our community!! Registration forms will be available through the office or Mr. Lemon.

The 3rd Annual Sport Stacking Tournament was held on March 30th at the DSBN Academy. Each student competed in the individual competition of the 3-3-3, 3-6-3 and the Cycle ( 3-6-3, 6-6, 1-10-1). The top 10 qualified for the finals and a chance to compete in another tournament in Toronto in May. Most competitors also completed the doubles, where one partner is the right hand and the other partner is the left hand while doing the Cycle. And the last category was the Team Relay where each of the 4 people on the team did the 3-6-3 stack as fast as possible. Sport stacking has quickly become a popular sport for the grade 3-8 stu-dents at Lincoln Centennial. Team members include: Anthony, Ivan, Chloe, Kylee, Somattra, Pancho, Aiden, Eric, Lenny, Stephanie, Hatim, Janiya, Sarthak, Mujin, Kevin, Ben, Harmony, Emma, Kevin I, James, Jarus, Josh, Maria. Thank you to Mrs. Kerr, Mrs. Drummond and Mr. Lemon for coaching the team.

Student Council has several fun-filled activities planned to cele-

brate Earth Day 2017!

On Friday, April 21st, there will be a short Earth Day

Assembly. Students are asked to dress in green and blue that

day, or in a creative Earth Day outfit. Following the assembly,

each class will participate in a Community Clean-Up to help beau-

tify our school grounds and the neighbourhood we live in.

Students will also be participating in “Earth Hour” as we "power

down" on the 21st from 12:40pm-1:40pm.

We are also encouraging students bring litterless lunch for on

the week of April 18th to 21st.

Lastly, interested students will have the chance to help with the

front of our school to help beautify our gardens!

EARTH DAY!

Dance Team The Lincoln Dance Team’s hard work and practice paid off as they debuted at the DSBN Showcase. The team per-formed flawlessly! On April 3rd, they participated at the Scotiabank Centre in Niagara Falls in “Niagara’s Best Dance Crew” Competition. There, they earned a second place and Best in Costume Award and High Gold. Our Dance team was comprised of the following members: Natalie, Bella, Ellie, Nihal, Arionna, Amber, Alex, Shaza and Solraya.

Charmaine Reid, a former Canadian Olympic Badminton player recently came in

to speak with the students at Lincoln about the sport of badminton !

Students were engaged as she spoke about chasing your dreams and setting goals.

As she represents JumpStart Canada, we were able to receive new badminton

equipment for all students to use.
