The Lord’s Prayer (Traditional Form) Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespassed
against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for
ever. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer in Matt (NAU) 9 Pray, then, in this way: Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
(Mat 6:9-13 NAU)
Structure of the Lord’s Prayer Two Sections: God and Us Four Elements Each:
Father; Name; Kingdom; Will Food; Sins; Temptation; Evil
From Top to Down From Inside to Outside Similar to the Decalogue (Ten Commandments)
Five on Vertical Relationships Five on Horizontal Relationships
Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread The Most Common Prayer of Men to God Is:
“Give Me Bread, or I Die.” Rachel to Jacob: “Give Me Children, or I Die.” (Gen 30:1) Truth: w/o Bread from Heaven, We Die Issue: Attitude
Believe Love Trust Peace
Correct Attitude in Prayer Believe:
Not Like the Pagans to the Idols: Repetition of Words Not like the Hypocrites: Showing-off Self-righteousness Not Holding on, but Removing Barriers to Blessings
Love: Knowing God as a Loving yet Sovereign Father Pray for God’s Name, Kingdom, Will
Trust: God Knows Our Need Peace: He Will Give Us When We Really Need
Should We Persist in Prayer? Luke 18:1 Now He was telling them a parable to show
that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, 2 saying,
“In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. 3 There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’ ”
Should We Persist in Prayer? 4 “For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said
to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.’ ”
6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge said; 7 now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them?
Should We Persist in Prayer? 8 "I tell you that He will bring about justice for them
quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?“ (Luke 18:1-8 NAU)
Principles: We Should Persevere in Prayer as an Act of Faith We Do So because We Trust in God’s Justice and Mercy We Should Not Repeat Words as the Pagans Do We Understand God Considers All & Has His Timing We Should Remove Our Own Barriers for Blessings as
We Persist in Prayer
Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread Give Us:
Pray from the Stand Point of Humanity to God Be Mindful of Others’ Needs as Well as Self ’s
This Day: Not Asking Visible Life Time Provision Trust in God’s Providential Faithfulness
Our Daily Bread: Asking for What We Need, Not What We Want Be Satisfied with What We Have, then Happiness
And Forgive Us Our Debts When We Sin, We Owe a Debt to God and Men God Created Us in His Perfect/Glorious Image We Fall Short of the Glory of God (Less than Perfect) Sin = tachah: Missing the Mark (Spirit) Sin = mion: Guilt Deserving Punishment (Soul) Sin = pesa: Crossing the Line of Approved Actions
(Body) When We Sin against Men, made in God’s Image
We Owe Men a Debt We Owe God a Debt
And Forgive Us Our Debts Debt Must Be Paid by
Debtor: Dutiful Act => Not Feeling Involved Creditor: Sovereign Forgiveness => Gratefulness Others: Benevolent Gift => Gratitude/Friendship
Justice = Demanding Rightful Payments Mercy = Forging Debts => Redemption Grace = Goodness beyond Duty => Gratefulness Changed Life: E.g. Jean Valjean in Les Misérables by
Victor Hugo
As We Forgive Our Debtors The Context Is Not Talking about Salvation: the Prayer
Is by/for Believers/Disciples of Jesus Christ Salvation (Forgiveness of All Sins, Giving of Eternal
Life & Sonship in the Household of God) Is the Sovereign Gift of God, Received by Faith, Not Earned by Personal Righteousness 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and
that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Eph 2:8-9 NAU)
As We Forgive Our Debtors The Five Levels of God’s Love:
Trinitarian Love: God-to-God, Selective, Mutual (Spirit/Conscience)
Providential Love: God-to-Men, Universal, One-directional (Heart)
Redemptive Love: God-to-Men, Universal, One-directional (Mind)
Elective Love: God-to-Men, Selective, One-directional (Will)
Relational Love: God-&-Men, Selective, Mutual(Strength/Body)
As We Forgive Our Debtors Once We Enter the Family of God, the Relationship Is
Mutual (Two-Directional) God loves Us First and Always; We Should Never
Doubt That We Should Strive for God to Be Pleased with Us, thus
Bless Us with Grace upon Grace God Delights in Changed Lives due to the Response to
His Grace through Christ Forgiveness of Others Is Made Possible by Christ’s
Redemption and the Spirit’s Regeneration
As We Forgive Our Debtors God Expects Us to Have the Capacity and Practice of
Forgiveness, as the Response of Being Forgiven. Our Unforgiveness of Others Is a Barrier to Further
Blessings. Yes, as We Pray for God to Forgive Our Specific Sins,
God Expect Us to Forgive Others First! It Has Nothing to Do with Overall Forgiveness for
Salvation. It Is about Living in a Blessed State with God.
Lead Us Not into Temptations Temptations Are What the World Does to Us First,
Trying to Made Us Part of Them Three Templates (1 John 2:15-17)
Fleshliness: “Lust of the Flesh” (Body) Greed: “Lust of the Eyes” (Soul/Heart) Pride: “Boastful Pride of Life” (Spirit)
Lead Us Not into Temptation God Does Not Tempt Us to Sin (James 1:13-14)
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.
15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
(Jam 1:13-15 NAU)
Lead Us Not into Temptation God Tests Us for Spiritual Readiness
Genesis 22:1 Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
2 He said, "Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you."
(Gen 22:1-2 NAU)
Lead Us Not into Temptation God Tests us for Spiritual Readiness
11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
12 He said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me."
(Gen 22:11-12 NAU)
Lead Us Not into Temptation God Tests us for Spiritual Readiness
15 Then the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven,
16 and said, "By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son,
17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies.
18 "In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice."
(Gen 22:15-18 NAU)
Lead Us Not into Temptation We Do Not Want to Be Tempted
We Do Not Play with Fire; We Admit That We Are Weak; We Need Protection, Rather Than Testing The Hindus Test Their Spirituality by Doing the Most
Fleshly Things We Do Not Wish for Testing
Testing His Servants for a Task is God’s Prerogative We Take the Tests Seriously as They Come
Deliver Us from Evil Evil is Real Evil Is What the World Does to Us
Now When We Are Not Cooperating Ultimately to Itself
Evil is the Mindset of Living against the Will of God Action of Hurting What God Intended to Bless
Deliver Us from Evil God Already Did That by Jesus’ Redemption: We are
Free from the Control of Sin God Is Doing That by Limiting the Range of Evil (e.g.
Job) God Will Do That Completely after the Second
Coming of Christ, and in the Eternal State.
The Lord’s Prayer (Traditional Form) Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespassed
