A Word from Our President

As another month of service has passed, we all can look back on our all our achievements together as a club. Fire and foremost, we came together to help out our community through all our services. We gladly rose awareness about our club on our campus during Key Club week. We showed our spirit and unity as an ohana at divisional events. We helped our school make an impact on the world by helping the relief effort for Typhoon Haiyan. It's an amazing thing to have the ability to say the word "we". Looking back on the past month, our club has focuses on unity. I'm proud to look at our club not only as a high school volunteer club, but as a family. This month was also a month of giving thanks. Not only am I thankful for the club as a whole, but I am thankful for each of you individually. I have not met every member of our club, yet you all have inspired me to become a more caring leader. Thank you for being such amazing members.

Sincerely, Chris Pile President

Some find distributing water to participants at events boring. Otters, however, can make something great out of anything, especially water distribution. Now, our club’s water station was already more appealing than one of any other events’. Our neon cups were lined up in eight rows across six tables, and behind us were several black lights that complimented our cups and illuminated the night with bright neon blue, green, yellow, and pink. But, as runners began to arrive at the finish line, we still felt like the atmosphere was lacking something quite significant, something our cups and lights and couldn’t bring to those breathless runners. Spirit. And who would be a better spirit bearer than otters? With that realized, one of our

spirit chairs, Anthony Duong, immediately began to generate a cheer for our station, “Get free water, get get free water (x2). Yeah you’re thirsty yeah yeah you’re thirsty (x2),” and before he knew it, everyone at the station joined in, even our shy, newly appointed members. The atmosphere became so lively and our station so frequented that we needed to restock on water swiftly so the later participants would be able to get a share without having to wait. Of course, to maintain the spirit we established, we instinctively did a new rendition of an original Key Club Cheer while pouring water, “Don’t drop that water jug, ayy don’t drop that water jug.” I don’t know of any other club that could have as much fun and bring as much energy to a service as Key Club can, especially not to such a simple yet significant task as pouring and handing out water. Sometimes my Key Club spirit wavers and struggles as a candle would against disheartening winds, but it’s events like these and the people in Key Club that reinvigorate my spirit and bring me back to the life of service. Every. Single. Time.

Dino Dash (Sunday, November 3rd , 7am-10am)

Caitlin Tran|Member|Sophomore

The only service I went to during the month of November was Dino Dash. It was located in Tustin, Ca. The event started at 6:45 but I volunteered for parking duty so I had to come at 6:00. The man that told us about parking and how it worked seemed excited about how many people was working parking duty. We had to check in and out just like any other service. Also there were some snacks for the volunteers. The shift ended at 9:00. The next key club event I attended in November was the meeting on the 4th. It was the day after the Dino Dash run. Chris Pile the president of Pacifica Key Club was the one that started out the meeting. Talked about how it was key club week and what were supposed to do during the week so we could celebrate it. Then the cabinet introduced a club cheer, which was new to most of the members. They represent the club really well. That’s all I really attended during the month, but I do hope to be more involved in the club for the months to come.

The service I did was Dino Dash. It was from 6:45am to 10am. The location was at 2915 El Camino Real, Tustin, CA 92782. After signing in, I was assigned to be at the finished line, at the water and fruit station. At first, I helped set the tables, then I had to cut oranges and bananas for the runners when they passed the finished line. It was fun, but cutting the oranges got tiring after a long period of time. From what I heard, we the volunteers cut over 3000 oranges and bananas. The easiest part was organizing them, and the hardest was doing it at a fast paste, because the fruits tray was going away fast. The other volunteers were also very nice and social. The person in charge of the station was also very cool and fun to work with. Overall, it was fun, and I had a good time, since I was working with one of my friends that also volunteered.

A world without Alzheimer’s disease. Who could imagine volunteering could have an impact on the world? I gladly sacrificed my early morning to devote time to contribute to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Once my members checked into the volunteer booth, they began to spread out the massive group of volunteers along the course. My close friends and I were placed in the tunnel leading into the baseball field of the stadium. To pass time, we bonded with our other members nearby. We spent our time sharing stories, spirit, laughter, and smiles until the walk began. Since there were so many people along the field, some of my members decided to accompany us in the tunnel. We patiently waited for the first walkers to arrive. Few individuals came running by on their own and we gladly showed them our support. Soon enough, the masses of walkers came through the tunnel. Altogether, we showed our spirit and support to their cause. There were so many walkers; it was almost as if it was an everlasting line. It was a happy feeling to know that my members didn’t stop cheering even when they became tired. We all knew so many of them were affected by this disease, and we wanted to show our support. My continuous yelling of “When I say walk, you say cure!” was extremely satisfying whenever I saw the approval, smiles, and gratitude from the walkers. By the end of the walk, my club was tired but we were all happy we could contribute our spirit to show our support so the cause.

After a service at Angel’s Stadium, many Pacifica Key Clubbers headed out to Mile Square Park for our monthly DCM. It was a pleasant surprise seeing so many of the volunteers from earlier head out in their full otter spirit for our little potluck. Even during the spirit battle, they gave full effort. Yes, we did not win, but I wouldn’t trade their laughter and smiles for anything. We also had a record high of members at DCM, which was over 30 members. For most, this was their first DCM, so it made me proud to see them step out of their comfort zones and put themselves out there. They all had a good time getting to know other otters in Division 4 North, as well as giving thanks to a club that has never failed to bring memorable opportunities like this.

This month our school and Westminster had our fundraiser with an ice skating night. It was a great way to kick off the break from school. Both schools were promoting this event for weeks, and finally it came. Even though it was cold at night many people leave the comfort of their home to go skate. However so many people came that the rink ran out of skates for certain sizes. But this didn't stop Key Club members from going. Many shared their skates with other members while some still bought the ticket but didn't skate. Those who bought and didn't skate are proud members still supporting their club. I on the other hand gave up my skates when an underclassman from my school needed skates. But I still had fun, sat and talked to other members from Westminster who I have never met. By the end of the event I had many at least ten new friends.

Fall Rally was an experience that I am glad I didn't miss. My brother and I had to wake up early to get ready to go to Bolsa Grande, where the buses and everyone else would meet to go to Six Flags. We arrived earlier than most people, and when everyone did arrive, it was strangely quieter than usual. I figure that’s because most people were probably still half asleep, but the beginning of our day was still somewhat eventful. Our group from Pacifica had to be split and divided into separate buses due to the lack of space in the third smaller bus. We sat scattered across the two bigger buses, and although it was kind of disappointing to be separated from our usual friends, it was also opportunistic because it allowed me to meet other members from our division that I might not have met otherwise. I think others were just as disappointed as I was when they started confiscating our food at the gate once we arrived at Six Flags, but that disappointment was soon forgotten. The park had been open earlier for Key Club, and soon after we went in, our group encountered other divisions

who demanded to know “how we felt.” There were a lot of eventful encounters, and we managed to get ourselves on a ride before going to the auditorium. At the auditorium, we managed to get front row seats, and from then on, there was a lot of screaming involved as we cheered our hearts out rooting for our division, raising money for PTP, and trying to win the Spirit Stick. Although we didn't win, I had fun with everyone else just being there and yelling with everyone. We then went on to enjoy the park for the rest of the day. Kim and I only managed to go on two other rides, but just being able to hang out with my friends on the weekend, meeting new people, cheering my heart out, and proudly representing my club and division had already made my day really fun. Looking back at my time at Fall Rally, I don’t regret going, but rather pity the time I missed out on in my previous years by not going. Nonetheless, I felt a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the day, knowing that I was able to help make a difference in the lives of others, and create a deeper bond between myself and my division.
