Back in the day, in the wee hours of a coldwinter morning, I was running through theVirginia backwoods, loaded down carrying anM60 Machine Gun, ammo, LBE, and rucksack,

when suddenly the ground below meshattered and I plunged down into

freezing water. Moments earlier,my body had been hot and

sweating; now, so cold. Suddenly, strands of my muscles weretightening up around me like sinuous tentacles from somephantom creature pulling me down into its godforsakenlake. I kicked and squabbled my way up to a ceiling of ice.A few feet away I felt waves and swam that way. I graspedM16 barrels, and was pulled up to safety. My team helpedme out of my gear and uniform, into dry clothes, andrubbed the circulation back into my body profusely. All this, and we were back on the move in under 3 minutes—withvery few words exchanged in whisper. Teamwork is awesome.

Well, a few days ago, I took my boat on the St. Lawrence Riverto Lucio’s Cove (our little family cottage my wife owns on someleased land on a little island). The water was super shallow asI approached, and being extra careful to not damage myprops—and raising them up too soon!—I ended up offshooting my dock. The strong current took my boat along theshoreline, as I couldn’t lower my props to gain control, becausethe water was too shallow. Long story short, I had to jump intothe river, and pull my boat out deeper—water rising to myhips. OMGoodness it was cold. Then I had to pull it for at least25 Meters against a strong, very cold current, towards thedock. From the waist down, I was completely numb. I yelledout to my God in the sky for strength and circulation, becauseI was not going to let that boat go! Finally, I got to dock, secured the boat to it, ran to the cottage, only to realize I forgotthe key. Ran back to the boat, got the key, and ran back to thecottage. Once inside, it seemed like it was taking forever to getout of my jeans and tightly laced running shoes—and it wascold in the house! I noticed I was exhibiting many of thesymptoms of hypothermia—significant numbness in mylimbs, muscle stiffness, weak, sleepy, low pulse, and I evenfelt like I was quickly losing the ability to stand up. But I roseup, and started slapping myself on the face profusely. Youwill NOT fall asleep! Sleep is for the weak, the dead, Ireprimanded myself, and forced myself to run in place.Another symptom: I may’ve been a bit confused, to say theleast. I didn’t have any clothes in that house—not even apair of socks! Fortunately, I wouldn’t have to start a fireoutside, naked to the world, since I had one of those little$20 heating fans from Wal-Mart. I turned it on pointing atmy legs as I ran in place for around 20 minutes, thawingmy legs out and getting the circulation back. Still cold andwithout clothes, but very much ALIVE. God bless America!

Anyways…all this to say, Massena, people need people!Individuality is great, but without one another, we will allperish much sooner than together as a team. And we allneed to think about this as our global economic crisesworsen. We don’t need money or anything material to behappy. All we need is each other and a little laughter, toget through the tough times ahead. Those braveAmericans who died fighting the Nazis and the Japanese, even in their last breath on the battle field, most likelycouldn’t even begin to imagine how great we would haveit as a result of their sacrifices. What would it have taken tomake them happy?—a hot meal, a nice cool refreshingbeverage, the conviviality of friends & family, a harmonica, maybe some dancing in a barn, and a warm bed. Mygoodness, people, HELLO! All we need to do is to LIVE—and if we can be happy with that and with each other, thenperhaps we will once again rise as a great nation. If not, then, well, we get what we deserve. Let living be for thosewho truly desire to live, and endless sleep for those whodon’t. That’s today’s news in the Massena News: The worldand every breath you take in it is for you to enjoy and behappy. Deserve it by being there for your friends andfamily, and work together as a team in everything you do.

Coach Clary, a Registered Nurse, has exhibited tremendousleadership through her achievements as coach, which is veryeasy to see in the superb performance of the club. Watchingall this power and strength in action, the sheer gymnasticsability, coordination involved, elaborate teamwork, endurance, jumping, and magnificent human towers, it issurprising that New York does not consider Cheerleading asport. “We’re considered a club,” Coach Clary informed me.Being a club, the cheerleaders rely on fundraising in order topurchase uniforms, cheer music, entry fees for competitionsand many other expenses. “So we do a lot of fundraising inthe community,” she went on to say. “We do competitivecheerleading in the spring, so we raise money to be able togo to those competitions.” Last year, they competed locallyonly. This year, she’d like to get them to Buffalo, Albany, andother areas “to show people that these little hometowns cando as well as those big cities,” Coach Clary said. “So, we’vebeen raising money for that,” she said, adding that theiruniforms are outdated, and that “we actually don’t all havematching uniforms. We have a couple uniforms that wepulled out of the basement to let them use” so they couldperform, but now she thinks they finally have enough moneyraised to buy all the girls new uniforms. “And they’re reallylooking forward to that,” she said, enthusiastically.

Moreover, much of the money they raise is for the sole purposeof giving back to the community. For instance, last year, the girlsraised over $900 for the Humane Society to be able to purchasea much needed medical scale. Additionally, she said, “We alsotook in donations of collars, blankets, dog food, cat food, kittylitter, and stuff like that for the animals” she said. This year, so far, their fundraising efforts havegenerated 4 boxes of food and cashdonations for a ‘Back the Pack’program to help fight hunger righthere in our own back yard wherethere are children whose parentscan’t afford to buy enough food.“And then,” she said, “on November5th, myself and about 15Cheerleaders will be doing the PolarBear plunge out on the St. Lawrenceriver.” Each one pledges to raise $100in this effort by jumping into the icecold water, for an approximate totalof $1,600 for the Special Olympics ofNorthern New York.

Recently, on October 22nd, theyparticipated in ‘Make A DifferenceDay’, an all-encompassing nationalday of service dedicated to helpingothers—in which the girlsparticipated by raking the leaves of 5 houses.

She talked about a great school spirit that had longfizzled out since when she’d been a Massenacheerleader, which is why she’d applied for jobof Coach, to train the girls and ultimately raise theschool spirit and school pride! She took this job around1 ½ years ago. At that time there were only 3 cheerleaders, and all they did was basic arm movements and “they were out therejust yelling” in attempts to roar the crowd,” she said. “So, that was mybiggest goal: To get more people involved” Coach Clary said. She’ssucceeded—the club is now much larger and definately spectacular!Coach Clary is a stellar individual exemplifying tremendous leadership, and the girls mirror her image of excellence and precision. From my perspective, she didn’t just train these girls—she inspired them with excellenceand the desire to be the best. “I want the community to come out and watch the games, see the girls, and get involved!” Coach Clary said passionately.Cheer, yell, show your team spirit! Massena, you should be proud! These girls are amazing! Come show your pride! Stand up and be counted!

mASSENA RED RAIDERS VARSITY CHEERLEADERS...

Indeed, citizens have been victimized by Wall Street andcorporatism all across our nation, and it is weighing heavilyupon the spirits of many worldwide, as we walk along in ourdaily lives, apprehensive of total global economic collapse.Every time you sign a service contract with a big corporation, none of the legalese of the Terms of the Agreement makesany sense at all, except for that part stipulating that they canchange the agreement anytime they please withoutcontacting you. Hey, what kind of agreement is that?! Still, you sign it. Hence, you’ve agreed to those terms. Andthat, my dear reader, is a big part of what happened, ina nutshell, to bring our nation to economic ruin: Toomany people agreed to contracts they should nothave agreed to.

This is not the kind of advice column that gives itsreaders the answers. No sir (or mam)! The intenthere is to offer readers advice on how to think, not what to think. Another big part of whathappened to bring our nation to economic ruinis that too many Americans were told what tothink in every given scenario, and utilizedsemantics to make it appear as though it isconsistent with their dogma. Well, we needto start letting go of our dogmas and beginopening our minds to fresh newperspectives. “The dogmas of the quietpast are inadequate to the stormy

present. The occasion is piled high withdifficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As ourcase is new, so we must think anew and actanew.”—Abraham Lincoln

Just as I completed filling out an applicationagreement form and was about to make a purchase,

another gentleman entered the premises andmade his way to the counter before me.

“That’ll be $27.49,” she said to him, to which he replied,“What? I was told when I made this purchase thatI’d get my $100 deposit back! Where is it?”

I stood there listening for almost 30 minutes as he continually arguedwith her for the $100 he was certain was owed to him, as sherepeatedly explained the total amount owed was $127.49—so, allhe had to pay was $27.49. This is basic subtraction math, but hesimply could not grasp the concept, probably because, in his mind,as he insisted, he was “getting screwed.” In his perception, he wasbeing victimized by a corrupt and unjust system. The professionalbusiness lady was extremely patient and gentle, even as trying toget understanding from him was like trying to get oil from awaterspout, and even as he belligerently demanded the $100 heinsisted was promised to him.

I had a very clear idea how she could reach him through logic, andwas very tempted to step in and communicate to him what she wasunable to; but my own lack of patience turned into mild amusementand I wanted to see her reach him. Besides, it was none of mybusiness, and had I interjected, his irrational thinking might’veescalated to panic. In contemplating that the ultimate subconsciousgoal of the victim mentality is to become further victimized, Idecided to refrain myself. Still, she would not deviate from the futileapproach through which she was attempting to reach him. Sheended up calling corporate office and asked them to speak with him.

As he stepped aside with the phone, and the lady accepted mypurchase, I whispered to her that “He just doesn’t get it, Mam. He’smore a visual person. Try saying ‘Your total is $127.49, sir. Here’s your$100 deposit, which you apply towards your total’ and bring that $100back behind your counter, and tell him ‘So, (you see?) that’s why all youowe is $27.49’. If that doesn’t work, get a pen and a piece paper andwrite the math out for him, because he’s unable to think in theabstract.” As I walked out of her office, he was still on the phonesounding frightened and convinced he was backed into a corner bycorporate corruption.

Indeed, corporate corruption andcorporate fascism exists, but he wasnot their victim—at least not in thisregard, anyway.

We all perceive in different ways. Nomatter how smart a person is, if he is feeling like a victim, hisperceptions are going to be severely altered to project an image inhis mind that is completely irrational and ridiculous in comparison tothe reality. Hey, don’t judge the man!—at one point or another in one’slife, anyone who’s ever lived a life worth living and has facedchallenges worth facing, has become a victim of one’s own thoughts.Anyone who doesn’t guard his own thoughts, and doesn’t payattention to his own thought patterns, eventually becomes his ownworst enemy! That’s just the way it is—it doesn’t matter if you’re arighteous man or not, a smart man or a not so smart man. Leave yourthoughts unguarded, and you will become your own worst enemy.

The bible says that "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, butagainst principalities, against powers, against the rulers of thedarkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."—Ephesians 6:12 (KJV). Other books may say it differently; but the endresult is always a matter of self-destruction.

A very special thanks goes out to my neighbor (andwhom I consider a friend!) Phil Sheehan, of Phil andJackie's on 69 Main St. Phil was the one who hadinformed me of the amazing achievements of theMassena Cheerleaders under the astonishing leadershipof Coach Clary—and connected me with them. Phileven contributed a few of their graphics (logos, emblems, etc.)—free of charge to me!—when I askedif he had any on file from his previous Screen printingwork. by Nancy Kilpatrick

“…and you being sick and all.  I told you to let me drive!  But no…”

Her voice pierced his skull.  The sound ricocheted around his brain like something sharp and shiny, cutting, slicing, dividing; he had a vague memory of flashing silver.  But more sounds were coming out of her, distracting him, sounds he couldn’t make sense of.  He struggled hard to concentrate.

Memories burst open, white-light flashes.  Sick.  He was sick.  Had been sick.  Was?  Had been? He didn’t know.  Aface, round, fatty, funny-looking.  With effort he remembered Doctor Somebody or Other at the clinic--

“You passed the mall!  Stupid!”

Another violent sound! Inside his ears he felt a painful quiver.  He turned to see where the sound came from.Someone sitting next to him in this space…this car…  He knew it was a car.  His car.  She turned towards him and her face, so full,so…succulent…  He opened his mouth and sound came out that to his ears was, “aaaaha.”

“What’s the matter with you? Turn around!” she snapped.  “Go back.” His head swiveled away from her, away from the sounds.  Suddenly, things.  Coming at him.  Fast.

Then he noticed something round and two pale things on each side of it.  Hands.  He knew they were hands.  A flash of light.  Hishands, skeletal.  He had been sick.  Off work.  No more work.  No more factory—

“Turn!  You’re gonna get us killed!”  Stabbing!

The car spun and they headed somewhere else and now things were not coming at him but he was chasing after things.  Cars?  Heknew that.  Why did he keep forgetting?  He was sick.  A fever…

“Stop!”

The pulsing shriek chopped into his brain.  Cleavers.  Sharp wide blades struck here, there, hurting him.   He remembered now. They had always hurt him.  Always. “aaaaaaahhhhhhhhaaaaa.”  What he said and what it sounded like and what did he mean?  He forgot.

“…shopping, so you wait here for me!”

As he watched the form move away from him, something shifted. Soon he trailed her, focused on her, all parts.  What he saw before him spoke of need.  Hunger.  His.  He accepted that now.  Finally, something made sense!

She looked juicy.  Tasty.  Tantalizing.  But he did not want to be tantalized.  He wanted food.  Everything in him demanded food.  Eator die.

She went through a door into a room and he followed and then followed again as she went into one of the small cubicles but thatdoor hadn’t closed fully when he went in after her. Shrieking.  Knives.  White light flash of kitchen knives slicing meat.  Red.  Raw.  Bloody.

All he wanted was the lips.  Tasting them, sucking on them stopped the knives.  And the hunger. And all the while he thought:  ‘sick.’

But he didn’t feel sick.  Not any more.
