D ear Parishioners, Fall is upon us and with it

we are very busy with various events as the Wine and Food tasting, lectures, bake sales, Pot luck dinners, brunches, and so many others. Every organization is eager and works very hard in their efforts of fundraising for their various projects. I congratulate all their members in this very difficult task and all their hard work.

A few days ago I invited all the presidents of our organizations to a meeting. We discussed various Church policies and procedures, what our mission as a Church parishioners and volunteers is, and encouraged everyone to help and support each other’s activities, as we all are one community. I urged all attending to share the contents of the meeting amongst their members so that we are all on the same page. Also, I asked all to be patient and cooperate during this transitional period.

Our annual elections for Parish council are coming up, and I would like to ask many of you to

participate. This way, you’ll get a chance to help your parish from the inside, and see things from another perspective. The real challenge is to attempt to make changes and improvements yourself and see it from our point-of-view, and not just as a critical by-stander, standing on the outside looking in.

It is not an easy job, and it is not for everyone. You must be willing to put in the hours and the hard work, with no material benefits and without expecting to hear a “Thank you”.

I am including here a summary of all costs of rebuilding all 4 of our Restrooms. Thanks to all of

you for making this project a reality.

I a m i n c o n s t a n t communication with Bishop Andonios to find a new priest for our Church. He is very hopeful that he will find someone for us soon.

I would like to thank Father Mathews for the wonderful services every Sunday and for taking the time to talk to our youngsters every Sunday.

I would like to invite all of you every Sunday to pray together as a family.

Come and join us. We are expecting you.

God Bless

Our Parish

T here is something that unites us more closely to our friends than knowledge does, and this is love. Knowledge may teach us about them, may unlock for us gradually throughout life ever more wonderful secrets of their goodness and strength and

loyalty. But knowledge of itself pushes us irresistibly on to something more. The more we know of that which is worth knowing, the more we must love it. Now love is greater than knowledge whenever knowledge itself does not really unite us to the object of our knowledge, so that St. Paul can deliberately put charity above faith, since faith is the knowledge of God by means of ideas which are themselves created and limited and inadequate, while charity sweeps us up and carries us right along to God Himself. Hence it was an axiom among the medieval theologians that love is more unifying than knowledge, so that in the real indwelling of the Holy Spirit in our hearts we must expect to find not only that He is the object of our intelligence, but also that He has a place in our hearts. Indeed, it is impossible to conceive any experimental knowledge which does not also include in it the notion of love.

This love or friendship between ourselves and the Holy Spirit, if by friendship we mean anything like that of which we have experience in our human relations, implies three things. First of all, friendship implies that we do not love people for what we can get out of them, for that would be an insult to a friend, for it would mean selfishness or even animal passion. Friendship implies that we come for what we can give far more than that we come for what we can get. We love because we have helped is more often the true order of the origins of friendship than we help because we have loved. Secondly, friendship to be complete must be mutual. There may indeed be love when some poor, forlorn soul is here never requited in its affection, but that is not what we mean by a friend or by friendship. Friendship implies action, a fellow feeling, a desire for each other, a sympathy. Thirdly, friendship also implies necessarily a common bond of likeness, or similarity of condition or life, some equality. Of course it is evident from classic instances that friendship may exist between a shepherd lad and the son of a king (though perhaps Jonathan's princedom was very little removed from shepherd life), yet the very friendship itself must produce equality between them. Said the Latin proverb: "Friendship either finds, or makes men equal."

Now, therefore, to be perfectly literal in our use of the word, we must expect to find these things reproduced in our friendship with the Spirit of God; and, wonderful as it is, these things are reproduced. For God certainly loves us for no benefit that He can obtain from His love. He certainly had no need of us, nor do we in any sense fill up anything that is wanting to His life. Before we were, or the world was created, the Ever Blessed Three in One enjoyed to the full the complete peace and joy and energy of existence. We are no late development of His being, but only came because of His inherent goodness that was always prodigal of itself. He is our friend, not for His need, but for ours. He is our friend, not for what He could get, but for what He could give—His life. Again, His friendship is certainly mutual, for as St. John tells: "Let us therefore love God because God first hath loved us" (John 4.19). There is no yearning on our part which is not more than paralleled on His. I can say not only that I love God, but that He is my friend. Thirdly, I may even dare to assert that there is a common bond of likeness and equality between myself and Him. He has stooped to my level only that He may lift me to His own. He became Man that He might make man God, and so, equally, the Holy Spirit dwells in me that I may dwell in Him. "Friendship either finds, or makes men equal." It found us apart, it makes us one. He came divine, perfect, to me, human, imperfect. By grace I am raised to a supernatural level. I know Him in some sort as He is; I am immediately united to Him by the bond of love.

The Art of Getting

Along With Folks by Dr. Frank Crane

I t is well to be wise and pretty, it is well to be free and strong,

it is well to live your own life, it is well to strive and to conquer, but the small but blessed group of them that can just Get Along with everybody deserves some praise.

We abuse them, we call them blarneyers, shifty and gifted in side-stepping. From the downright heights of our opinions and principles and ideals we pooh-pooh them.

But they are none the less the

most comfortable people in the world to live with.

When we are irritable, they

know the trick of stroking our fur the right way. When we are glum they know the sweet secret of silence. When we state a pugnacious opinion and bristle up to prove it, and are spoiling for a fight, they find some remarkable originality in our crazy notion, that

flatters us into calm. They don't do as we advise them, but they are most deft in explanations why they could not. They have a keen nose for avoiding sore subjects of conversation. They know when to laugh and when to look sympathetic. Many a family blaze has been prevented by their acute sense of social smoke. They can see trouble coming a mile away, and guide us all down a bylane. They are human lubricants. They are the gifted ones who can manage human bees and never get stung. They may lie — a little — but still,

"blessed are the Peacemakers." -This excerpt is from Footnotes to

Life, by Dr. Frank Crane, originally

published in 1920

Belling the Cat

L ONG ago, the mice had a general council to consider what measures they could take to outwit their common enemy, the Cat. Some said this, and some said that; but at last a young mouse got up and said he

had a proposal to make, which he thought would meet the case. “You will all agree,” said he, “that our chief danger consists in the sly and treacherous manner in which the enemy approaches us. Now, if we could re-ceive some signal of her approach, we could easily escape from her. I venture, therefore, to propose that a small bell be procured, and attached by a ribbon round the neck of the Cat. By this means we should always know when she was about, and could easily retire while she was in the neighbourhood.” This proposal met with general applause, until an old mouse got up and said: “That is all very well, but who is to bell the Cat?” The mice looked at one an-

other and nobody spoke. Then the old mouse said: “IT IS EASY TO PROPOSE IMPOSSIBLE REMEDIES.” ~Aesop

W e have started off to a great year! Thus far this year, the

children have had a great time at bingo night and have gone to see Frankenstein at the Downtown Cabaret. It was a great show, and the kids looked amazing in their costumes.

We had a great turnout for our Pancake Breakfast. Thank you to all who came to support the PTO. We would like to give a special thank you to our cook in the kitchen Evangelos Gountas, and especially to everyone who helped put this event together.

Registrations are ongoing after Church and Sunday school. We are planning a few fundraisers and activities for our children. In order to do that, we need everyone’s help. Through our fundraisers, the PTO is able to treat our children to various activities. Most importantly, we do encourage all parents to

support the PTO. If anyone is interested in bringing

snacks & juice on Sundays for the childr en, please ema il me at [email protected] Below are a few save the dates to keep in mind in the coming month November 11th- PTO Christmas Boutique

GOYA by Nicole Pettas and

Evan Yiannoulis -Co-presidents

A s Fall is upon us, let’s all take some time to enjoy the

beautiful scenery that sur-rounds us. The leaves are already turning colorful reds, yellows, browns, and oranges indicating colder weather. Before we know it, Winter will be here. By now, we are all very busy with schoolwork, team sports, and other activities.

GOYA has had a strong start this year, and our first outing was to the Holiday Hill in Prospect, CT which was so much fun! It was a delightful day and enjoyed by all who attended.

Our GOYA picnic was

well attended and very suc-cessful. We would like to thank all GOYANS, our parents, our parish’s organ-izations, and all parishion-ers who supported us . We could not have done it without your help. The proceeds will be going to-wards scholarships for the graduating GOYANS of the class of 2012. We are looking forward to our up-coming events: the car wash fundraiser, and our TAG sale, which will be on November 5th. Please help GOYA by donating the items you no longer

use. We would also like to

remind everyone that GOYA will be doing its annual Christmas cards soon, and that we will be set up downstairs every Sunday after Liturgy tak-ing orders for them. There will be more information to come about the upcom-ing district retreat run by the diocese in early De-cember. Just a reminder, that our monthly meetings are scheduled for the first Sunday of each month im-mediately after Liturgy in the YAL room.

If you have any ques-tions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Wishing you all a produc-tive month and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Daughters of

Penelope by Helen Yeotsas - President

T he Sisters of Chapter 41 are gearing up for a very busy Autumn.

In October, five Sisters attended the District Conference in Orange. We also had a Dinner Meeting with the AHEPA, and Installation of new officers where several District Lodge members who joined us. Our chapter continues to grow, with two new members so far this year!

Even one pair of gloves will put a smile on the face of someone in need. We plan to distribute these items at the Church's "Meal of Love" this month, and then to many worthwhile organizations like local schools, shelters, hospitals and crisis enters. Please see the flyer in the Vision for all the Drop Box locations. Thanks to those who continue to collect these items at their places of business.

Please plan to purchase a "Turkey Raffle" ticket this month, with all proceeds going directly to our scholarship fund. Just a dollar and you are directly helping a worthy student or students from

our own community! Drawing will be on November 20 after services. Also this month (on the 20th) is the deadline to purchase your "Christmas Wreaths" from the Daughters. Details in the flyers at church and in the Vision. Please consider purchasing one of our wreaths this year, decorated by our members, and the GOYA members.

P ractice for all the basketball teams and J u n i or Va r s i t y

volleyball team are in full swing. Varsity volleyball will begin practice on November 30th, after the conclusion of the high school volleyball season. There is no Farm Team in basketball this year due to most of the children from last year’s team moving up to the Midget Division. The first basketball games of the season will begin the weekend before Thanksgiving. Volleyball games will start in mid-December. I am happy to report the overwhelming response to our Junior Varsity Volleyball team. The team has 20 enthusiastic girls signed up. A sincere thank you goes out to Coach Stella Katsetos for her energy and enthusiasm

in getting the girls to sign up. As for ma int ena nce projects, the cosmetic upgrade of the 1st floor women’s bathroom in the gym was delayed due to concerns with the roof. However, after meeting with members of the committee, the cosmetic upgrade will proceed and be completed prior to the start of

the games. Last month, I reported that members of the Athletic Committee assisted in placing sealant on the gym roof in order to stop leaks. I was informed after the fact that the gym roof sustained damage during the previous hurricane. A claim was submitted to the insurance company. Our program needs volunteers to help in the gym. If anyone is interested in helping out with collecting the admission fee at the door, working in the snack bar, or scorekeeping, please contact me as soon as possible. Please feel free to call me at (203) 556-0489 or email me at [email protected] with any ideas, questions, and/or concerns. .

T he Bridgeport Chapter of AHEPA would like to take this opportunity

to thank everyone who attended Taverna Night in August. It was a beauti-ful evening (before tropical storm Irene arrived the following day) at the beach filled with music and dance. Thanks to your support we exceeded last year’s at-tendance with approximately 400 present this year. We look forward to next year’s event. The funds raised from Tavern Night go towards many worthy causes including the AHEPA scholarship Fund. On November 13, 2011 directly after

church AHEPA is sponsoring there annual chicken lunch-eon. Please stay after church and have lunch. AHEPA has been sponsoring this annual luncheon for many years and the proceeds from this lunch-eon also contribute to the scholarship fund supporting

the youth of our community. On November 16, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.

AHEPA will be sponsoring a lecture by Professor Konstantina Maragkou of the Yale Hellenic Studies Department. Her lecture will be about the Junta Period (1967-! 974) of Greek History. Refresh-ments will be served after the lecture. Please join us for this lecture which is open to all.

A s you know, the bathroom restoration project is now complete. We thank the many

parishioners who volunteered their services to accomplish this task. Many thanks to everyone who individually donated these past two years, no matter what the amount. Your thoughtfulness and cooperation are deeply appreciated.

Eleven of our GOYAns attended a Direct Archdiocesan District event where they met other GOYAns from New York and Connecticut. This was held at the Holiday Hill Day Camp in Prospect, Connecticut. Thank you to those who attended. It was nice to have our Parish represented. We wish the GOYAns much success in their future projects. Their annual Tag Sale will take place on Saturday, November 5th. Also, keep in mind that they will be doing the annual Church "Christmas Card".

The Philoptochos recently had a delightful

"Champagne Brunch". Many thanks to those who donated the many food items and to those who made monetary donations. Now they will be preparing for their Thanksgiving Bake Sale. Keep in mind to order their delicious baked goods and food.

“Men do not reject the Bible because it contradicts itself but because it contradicts them.”

Starfish

A small boy lived by the ocean. He loved all the creatures of the sea, especially the starfish, and

spent much of his time exploring the seashores.

One day he learned that there would be a minus tide that would leave the starfish stranded on the sand.

The day of the tide he went down to the beach and

began picking up the stranded starfish and started tossing them back in the sea. An elderly man who lived next door came to down to the beach to see what he was doing.

“I’m saving the starfish,” the boy proudly declared. When the neighbor saw all of the stranded starfish he shook his head and said, “I’m sorry to disappoint you young man, but if the look down the beach one way, there are stranded starfish as far as the eye can see. And if you look the other way, it’s the same. One boy like you isn’t going to make much of a difference.”

The boy thought about this for a moment. Then he reached his small hand down to the sand, picked up a starfish, tossed it back into the ocean and said,

“I sure made a difference for that one.” - Unknown

An Interview

with God

I dreamed I had an interview with God. “So you would like to

interview me?” God asked. “If you have the time” I said. God smiled. “My time is eternity.” “What questions do you have in mind for me?” “What surprises you most about humankind?” God answered... “That they get bored with childhood, they rush to grow up, and then long to be children

again, that they lose their health to make money...and then lose their money to restore their health, that by thinking anxiously about the future, they forget the present, such that they live in neither the present nor the future. I am surprised that they live as if they will never die, and die as though they had never lived.” God’s hand took mine and we were silent for a while. And then I asked… “As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons you want your children to learn?” “To learn they cannot make anyone love them. All they can do is let themselves be loved, to learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others, to learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness, to learn that it only takes a few seconds to open

profound wounds in those they love, and it can take many years to heal them. I want them to learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least, to learn that there are people who love them dearly, but simply have not yet learned how to express or show their feelings, to learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently, and to learn that it is not enough that they forgive one another, but they must also forgive themselves.” "Thank you for your time," I said humbly. "Is there anything else you would like your children to know?" God smiled and said, “Just know that I am here... always.” ~ Unknown

Ἀσφαλῶς οἱ δύο µαθητὲς τοῦ Κυρίου, ὅταν θὰ ἔφερναν στὴ µνήµη τους ἀργότερα τὸ γεγονός, θὰ ἀποροῦσαν µὲ τὸν ἑαυτό τους: Πῶς δὲν Τὸν καταλάβαµε τότε; Γιατί νὰ δυσκολευθοῦµε νὰ Τὸν ἀναγνωρίσουµε, ἀφοῦ «ἡ καρδία ἡµῶν καιοµένη ἦν ἐν ἡµῖν» καθὼς µᾶς µιλοῦσε στὸ δρόµο καὶ ἔνιωθε στὰ βάθη της ἡ ψυχή µας ὅτι δὲν ἦταν ἕνας ἁπλὸς συνοδοιπόρος Ἐκεῖνος, ὅτι δὲν µποροῦσε νὰ ἦταν ἄλλος παρὰ ὁ ἀναστηµένος Χριστός;

Το e-mail

Dr. Artemis Morris presents her book: The Anti-inflammation Diet for Dummies Dr. Artemis Morris, Naturopathic physician, nutrition professor, and licensed acupuncturist, recently authored a book for the popular “for dummies” series called The Antiinflammation Diet for Dummies with the award-winning writer, Molly Rossiter. The information in the book is useful for anyone who wants to reduce their risk of chronic disease or relieve themselves of the symptoms that are mediated by inflammation, which includes most disease states. You are no dummy if you want to reduce your risk of disease with the simple and effective changes characteristic of an anti-inflammatory diet and lifestyle. Inflammation is the hidden factor in the pathology of disease, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, and is not addressed nor tested by most physicians. Her presentation will include information regarding what tests you may need, early signs of inflammation, and dietary and lifestyle changes that prevent and treat in-flammation.

Diseases due to inflammation:

Heart and cardiovascular disease Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes, and metabolic syndrome Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and related fertility issues Autoimmune Diseases (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, and Psoriatic Arthri-tis) Asthma and allergies Digestive disorders Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease Cancer
