Your main vacation week? Traveling orstaying home to complete that long-awaitedhome project? We have the“Freedom” to choose whatever we wish attend.Fairs and festivals are definately abundant thistime of year and this summer is no exception.We’ve even discovered some new events to add to ouragenda. So whatever you choose, remember to thank Godfor our Freedom.

10 Interesting Facts About Independence Day* The first Independence Day celebration took place in

Philadelphia on July 8, 1776. This was also the day that theDeclaration of Independence was first read in public afterpeople were summoned by the ringing of the Liberty Bell.

* The Declaration of Independence was first presented toCongress on June 28, 1776, after more than a year of tryingto appeal the practice of taxation by England without repre-sentation in the English Parliament.

* 50 flags are flown 24 hours a day at the WashingtonMonument.

* Originally, the stars on the flag were arranged in a circleto denote the equality of all the colonies.

* Thomas Jefferson died on the 50th anniversary of theDeclaration of Independence. So did John Adams who alsosigned the Declaration.

* Only John Hancock actually signed the Declaration ofIndependence on July 4, 1776. All the others signed later.

* The White House held its first 4th of July party in 1801.* Barbecue is big on Independence Day, with more than 74

million Americans planning one. We eat around 150 millionhot dogs and buy around 700 million pounds of chicken.

* July 4th became a national holiday in 1941.* President Calvin Coolidge was born on July 4, 1872.

Things to Do:Celebrate Swiss Heritageat Swiss Days in Berne

July 25-28

Elected into the International Polka Music Hall ofFame, the ensemble has 92 musical releases. Theband, founded in 1957, still has three o original mem-bers: Hank on accordion, wife Maryanne on vocals,and Bob Gref on saxophone and clarinet. The HankHaller Ensemble also features Jerry Krocek on trum-pet, guitar, and keyboard, Frank Sluzala and LouVucovinsky on drums, and Bill Kopco on bass andtuba. Offering authentic musical presentations, theensemble plays polkas and waltzes from Germany,Austria, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, andAmerica.

The Swiss Day Celebration is a time forBerne to share it’s heritage with authenticSwiss costume, great food, craft vendorsand merchandise. Residents and visitorsalike enjoy the friendly competitions forall ages. From the 5K race to Big WheelCompetition for the younger ones to theSteintoss, there is something for everyone.

On stage and around the festival youcan hear Swiss music. Watch as couplesdance the polka to live music on stage.The sounds of alpine music will streamfrom the downtown stage where tablesand chairs are shaded under a big top.

From amusement rides to local businesstours to fireworks and more, the SwissDays Festival has activities for people ofall ages.

Berne's historic downtown is overtakenwith sights of artists and craftsmen sellingtheir wares and smells of fresh food beingprepared. Amusement rides give way tochildren laughing and squealing withdelight.

Homemade ice cream, apple dumplings,BBQ chicken and so much more areoffered. Activities include Berne's GodTalent Competition, Stein Toss, Big WheelRace for young riders, Pedal Tractor Pull,Old Fashion Hymn Sing, and hours ofstrolling and enjoying! Downtown Stageperformers include: Hank HallerEnsemble, Ken & Mary Turbo Accordions,The Original Alpine Express, and Conley-Schmidt.

A Small Town GetawayGet acquainted with Madison,Indiana, one of the

Midwest’s favorite historic rivertown destinations.When you arrive in Madison, the first thing you’ll

notice is the amazing architecture in our NationalHistoric Landmark District. Next you will see all theshops and restaurants in those buildings, so youmight as well get started on Madison’s Main Streetwith a stop at Cocoa Safari Chocolates . Deb usesthe finest chocolate to handcraft her confections.Better get some for yourselves and a little some-thing to take back home.

While you are cruising & shopping Main Street,you’ll notice some great stores and galleries withMadison-made products and art. Stop at TheArtisan Gallery at Madison Tableworks to see cus-tom crafted tables, you can even design your own,and fine art.

Because Madison is known for its historic sites,you’ll want to tour at least one of them. We have 9!Lanier Mansion State Historic Site is open for toursyear round. This 1844 Greek Revival Home is con-sidered the Crown Jewel of Madison’s historic dis-trict.

Just up the street, stop at The Attic Coffee MillCafé for lunch and a piece of their famous DutchApple Pie on your way to Clifty Falls State Park .You can take a hike, easy to rugged choices, at Cliftyor just admire the views. There are 7 waterfalls andplenty of scenic vistas for photo taking.

Or…you might want to rent a bike at Fizz’s BikeShop and head to Madison’s riverfront. It’s an easyride and we’d suggest a picnic or some wine &cheese from Thomas Family Winery .
