Dear Alum: When I attended Sacred Heart High School in the mid-1980s, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” broke records for album sales, astronaut Sally Ride was the first American woman to go to space, the Olympics were held in Los Angeles, and Sister Ramona Bascom was Principal (RIP). While time has gone by, Sacred Heart is still the same Catholic school where young women receive a college preparatory education, gain strong moral values, and build life-long friend- ships. Like many of us, most students still come from working-class families and will be first in their family to attend college. This opportunity will translate into positive economic change for their immediate family, community, and generations to come. I know this firsthand. Today, I am a proud parent of three young women who are walking in my footsteps as students at Sacred Heart. Gabby graduated in May 2016 and is now attending the University of California, Riverside majoring in business economics. While Gema and Paulina are taking rigorous courses, are all-star runners of the Cross Country team, and are members of student government. I am incredibly grateful that I am able to provide my daughters with the same solid, Catholic education I received -- but 90% of our student body cannot afford tuition and need financial aid. Our girls depend on past Comets, like you and me, to help them get the education they deserve. In return, they honor us by getting into some of the best universities and colleges in the nation. This is a return on investment like no other! I challenge you to pay it forward and donate to the Comet Scholarship Fund, the main source of tuition assistance for our young women. Your gift will make an immediate impact on a student’s education by allowing her to graduate, attend college, and follow her dreams. Most importantly, remember that it will not only impact her, it will change a family and a community for posterity -- just like it did us. Please join me in supporting Catholic education and our future leaders.
