The present sources constitute an overview of Tubin’s completed manuscripts as well as a completecatalogue of his published works. References to incomplete manuscripts are not included in this publi-cation. Certain exceptions are made regarding comparisons between the published scores and their origi-nal manuscripts. Furthermore, if the manuscript contains information regarding its time and place ofwriting, that information is contained herewith. The concise data concerning a published composition’stime and place of writing (including its reference in a foreign language) is also listed in this edition.

Annotations in this edition are divided into three sections; Reference to (A) sections concern any mar-kings that are connected with the last published edition of this work, the same being the basis for thisparticular edition; (B) and (C) consist of any specific reference to the original manuscript or any earlierpublication. If there is any direct link of relative importance between the manuscript and it’s appearancein this edition then that reference will be annotated separately. The level of research into these referencesis restricted to an overall listing and commentary of a given work, the last describing contrasting aspectsarising between previous publications. Other references to the origins of folk music can be found at thewebsite. Supplement includes E. Tubin’s arrangement of N. Paganini’s Capriccio No. 24. (www.tubinsociety.com).

Capriccio No. 1 ETW 50Composed 1937 (2. version 1971)

Tubin’s reduced original version of this piece hasbeen lost, and the only known available version isa miscellaneous handwritten copy of the piece belon-ging to the EMTA library. The original violin manu-script is preserved in the VA archive. Tubin re-workedmainly the piano part, replacing the bass octaves withindividual notes and paring back the right handchords. There are no particular alterations in the vio-lin part, only the piece in 1971 simplifying the pianocertain reference to articulation; even the bow mark-ings are the composer’s suggested version.

Suite on Estonian Dance Tunes ETW 53Composed 1943

Tubin wrote the cycle during three weeks in1943. When Tubin fled to Sweden in September,1944, the manuscripts remained in Estonia. In 1952publisher Körling suggested to Tubin to publishthem. Tubin wrote down from memory the first threepieces, cutting some measures. He did not writedown the fourth piece and, therefore, it remainedunpublished until the composer has got a copy fromEstonia, and rewrote it in 1974.

1. Old Waltz ETW 53–1

Here Tubin uses three different melodies, the firstbeing a simple folk tune (labajalavalss), played bythe violin after the piano’s threefold introduction:

after which follows another melody called laba-jalavalss:

the third melody is called Pulmalust (WeddingBliss) and is heard in tandem with the first melody:

Bar 1 The tempo marking in the originalmanuscript (E) is Andante. In a later manuscript(A) and also in the first published edition (D) it ismarked Moderato = 88–92

Bar 5 In earlier manuscripts (E, F) this bar ismissing, but in later manuscripts (B) and in the firstpublication (D) as well as the original score (G) itis written as such.

Bar 31 In earlier manuscripts (E, F) the last beatof the violin part is marked as a dotted rhythm.Later manuscripts (B, G) and the first edition (D)the same is marked as two eighth notes whichappears to be an error and corrected by the editor.

2. Shepherd’s Horn Piece ETW 53–2

Four different tunes are used in this piece; thefirst is a well-known folk tune of dance-like charac-ter to which Tubin has added his own syncopated-stylized rhythmic configuration in 3/8 metre:

Page 6: Tubin 20 komm web OK Engl

GE 11978

6 the second theme proceeds from the first one:

the third theme represents the sounds of a whoo-ping shepherd boy:

the fourth theme uses the following tune:

Bar 74 In the original manuscript (B) and thefirst edition (D) violin part there is a misprint of thefirst eighth note as A flat. It should be G as writtenin the original score (G)

3. Kantele Player ETW 53–3

Two themes alternate here. The first, played onHiiu Kannel is played pizzicato on the violin:

The second theme is closely related to the firsttheme.

Bar 1 The first edition (D) is marked rubato confantasia and the first beat of the piano part is writ-ten A–B–C–D–C–A. This appears to be a mistakeand should be written C–D–E–F–E–D–C as per theoriginal manuscript (B) which also includes rubatomarking.

Bars 20, 25, 63, 68 In the original manuscripts(A, B, C) and the first edition (D) the time signa-ture is 3/4 and the first beats are marked as rests. Inthe original manuscript (G) the time signature is 2/4.

4. Goathorn Pieces ETW 53–4

This is the longest movement based on three sepa-rate folk tunes. Firstly written in the violin part as asingle melody and later in parallel fourth intervals:

The second theme proceeds from the first one:

The last folk tune originates from Kullamaa:

Bars 122–129 An earlier manuscript (E) has atempo marking of poco largamente, espressivo andonly the upper violin part is written here whilst thelower part is added in a later manuscript and mar-ked ad libitum (C) and in the score (G).

Bars 151–156 An earlier manuscripts (E, F) hasthis passage written as follows:

Page 7: Tubin 20 komm web OK Engl

7Tubin has abbreviated this section in later manu-script versions (A, C, G).

8 Bar 48 Manuscript (B) is marked con passione, which is omitted in another manuscript (C) and inthe published edition (A) instead being markedLargamente.

Bar 51 Manuscript (C) omits a sharp before theA note of the last eighth beat of the piano part (bothhands) but is marked accordingly in another manu-script (B) and in the published edition.

Bar 55 In manuscript (C), the violin part displaysa dotted rhythm in the first beat. However, in manu-script (B) and in the published edition (A) there aretwo eights instead.

Bar 61 Manuscript (C) is marked cresc. whichis omitted in the manuscript (B) and the publishededition (A).

Bar 183 In the hadwritten copy of Zelia Aumere’s(C) has the last eighth note of the right hand pianopart written as A–A–C. Apparently this is an errorand should be written A–F–A as it corrected by editor.
