The War Memorial Cannon has occupied a place ofdistinction in the Turlock community for over 50years. The City of Turlock received and has kept the

War Memorial Cannon in trust for the continued benefit ofits citizenry. The public display of the War MemorialCannon pays tribute to all veterans who have served or willserve in the united States of America’s armed forces,including, but not limited to, veterans who are members ofthe American legion, the Disabled American Veterans,korean War Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of

the united States. The 105 MM howitzer Artillery Cannonweighs in at 5,000 lbs. and spans 19 feet in length. With aheight of 7.5 ft., the cannon had a range of over 12,000yards. The equipment was used tactically in Iwo Jima WWIIand in korea between 1950 and 1953.

on Wednesday, November 11th, 2015, the City honoredour veterans by rededicating the War Memorial Cannon inCentral Park, located at 115 S. Golden State Blvd.

The Turlock Chamber ofCommerce Board of Directorsappointed Paul Wright to serve

as the interim President/CEo,following the retirement of long-timePresident Sharon Silva on August 15.

A native of Turlock, Wright enters theposition with years of experience inprofessional leadership roles.

“We are so fortunate to have theopportunity to work with Paul Wrightduring this interim period,” said kylekirkes former chair of the TurlockChamber of Commerce Board ofDirectors. “Not only is he a Turlocknative, but he also brings with himdecades of business and Chamberexperience. I am confident that he willbe an invaluable asset to ourorganization over the next severalmonths.”

Wright’s background includes over 30years of business experience, with 20years as a consultant – working withleadership teams and organizations asthey seek to align their relationshipsand strategy.

“I think I have a unique background forthis role,” said Wright. “I started mycareer here in Turlock. When I movedinto a new profession, I served as avolunteer for two Chamber ofCommerce Boards and was the Chairof one. I’ve served on a city council and

understand what it’s like to be in aposition of making decisions thatinfluence the business community andthe chamber.”

Wright’s term as President/CEo for theTurlock Chamber will includeoperations management, performingan internal analysis of the organization,fostering key business and communityrelationships and assisting the Board ofDirectors in the search for a permanentPresident/CEo.

“My number one goal is creating thefoundation for the new permanentCEo to be successful,” Wright said.“I’d also like to continue to improvethe financial systems and the way theChamber generates income, andcontinue the development of our staff –we’ve got a great staff.”

Wright graduated from Turlock highSchool in 1967, and served as theTurlock Chamber’s Executive from 1977through 1980.

“There’s a saying that ‘you can nevergo back’ and in this context I thinkthere is an exception,” Wright said. “Ihave roots here, I have a deep care forthe community and the Chamber, and Ithink that I have the practicalconnection and background… yet I’vegot that sort of emotional connectionto the community and I think that’s anice combination.”

Located on 27 acres in the heartof California’s Central Valley isone of Turlock’s longest

standing community members –Covenant Village of Turlock, the city’sonly continuing care retirementcommunity.

“We’re woven deep into the fabric ofthis tight-knit community,” says Bobhowell, executive director atCovenant Village of Turlock. “We’vebeen here for nearly a century.”

The faith-based, not-for-profit continuing care retirement communityopened its doors in 1977, but its rootsin the Turlock community date back tothe early 1900s, when Covenantchurches in Turlock and nearby hilmaropened Bethany home for the elderlyin 1924.

“Bethany home,” says howell, “wasthe genesis of Covenant Village ofTurlock.”

From humblebeginnings, asleepy railroad

stop has evolved intoone of the CentralValley’s finest cities.

It all started on a fatefulFriday, way back in 1871.The Central PacificRailroad had reached thelocation of its neweststation, to be named “Turlock”.

John Mitchell, a successful grainfarmer and prominent businessman,founded Turlock with little more than apost office, a depot, and a grainwarehouse. Mitchell soon became therichest man in the area, owning morethan 100,000 acres in the CentralValley and ranching huge herds ofcattle and sheep.

An agricultural boom struck Turlock inthe early 1900s, driven in large part by the founding of the Turlock Irrigation

District. TID was the first irrigationdistrict in the State of California,providing precious water that allowedfor year-round farming.

Turlock became a City on Feb. 15,1908. By the 1930s, it had earned thetitle of the “heart of the Valley” dueto the copious amount of fruits andvegetables — particularly melons —grown. And Turlock soon earned asecond title,“The City of God,” afterRipley’s Believe It or Not proclaimedTurlock to have the most churches per

capita in the unitedStates.

California Stateuniversity, Stanislausopened its doors in1960, redefiningTurlock as a place ofhigher learning. AndTurlock opened itsdoors as well,

welcoming more and more residentsas students and business owners alikesettled down.

Today, Turlock is home to more than70,000 residents. It continues to be ahub of activity for the Central Valley,with fine dining, upscale shopping, atop hospital, and one of the region’sfinest art galleries. And Turlock hasremained true to its agricultural rootsthrough it all; the city continues toattract major factories from companieslike Blue Diamond Growers and thehilmar Cheese Company.

The extremely popular shopping center expanded onceagain at the close of 2014, adding a new phase anchoredby Dick’s Sporting Goods and JoAnn Fabric and Craft.

Geer Road/University Area

California State university, Stanislaus is located at theintersection of Geer Road and Monte Vista Avenue. Aroundthat epicenter, a variety of businesses have opened upshop, catering to students and Turlock residents.

Grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, gyms,nationwide retail chains, and more all call this area home.It’s a little bit of everything, spread along two of Turlock’smain thoroughfares.

Countryside Plaza

Walmart, Staples, and JC Penney anchor CountrysidePlaza, located on Fulkerth Road just off highway 99. Thislarge shopping complex also plays host to localrestaurants, apparel stores, and an auto service center.That last item makes particular sense, considering theTurlock Auto Plaza is located just a few blocks downFulkerth Road, on the other side of highway 99.

Golden State Boulevard

old highway 99, now known as Golden State Boulevard,runs alongside the railroad tracks that bisect Turlock. Thatold road is still a major thoroughfare for Turlock residents,dotted with small shopping centers and retailers fromnearly every category.

BMX Bike Park

Turlock’s economy hastraditionally been based onagriculture, agriculture-related

The City of Turlock is a proud citywith a tradition of greatleadership.

Citizens of Turlock electrepresentatives to local, county, state,and federal government. Thoseelected officials are tasked withrepresenting the 70,000 people whocall Turlock home.

The City of Turlock itself is a Generallaw City. It is operated via a council/manager form of government, whereelected officials establish policy andpass ordinances but the day-to-dayoperations are overseen by appointedofficials.

The City of Turlock manages the city’spublic safety, drinking water supply, parksand recreation, housing, development,planning, roads, and sewage.

The Turlock Chamber of Commerceplays a large role in positivelyaffecting local, state, and federalgovernment through its Turlock Actionfor Business Political ActionCommittee. TABPAC encourages andstimulates local residents and othersto take an active and effective part ingovernmental affairs by informingthem as to the records of localofficeholder and candidates for office.
