According to principal, Mr An-dré Pretorius, 303 matric learnerswrote the National Senior Certifi-cate last year with only two who

failed.“This is the first time in three

years thatwedonothavea 100per-cent pass rate but the two learnersthat have not passed will be doinga rewrite,” Pretorius said.

He added that the two learnerswho did not make it narrowlyfailed and believed that with therewrite they would pass, boostingtheir matric success rate again.

Pretorius believes that if yourun a school with a system thatworks, then you have a recipe for

success.“If learners work hard and

teachers work hard then successcan only come from this. We arefortunate at Brackenfell HighSchool thatwehaveboth,”he said.

Pretorius is especially proud ofone of their learners, MoniqueVisser, who was invited by West-ern Cape Premier Helen Zille to at-tend a function yesterday (Tues-day) at Zille’s official residence,Leeuwenhof, where the top ma-triculants of 2011 were honoured.

Monique obtained distinctionsin the following subjects: English,Afrikaans, maths, life orientation,accounting, life science, physicalscience and maths.

UnfortunatelyVisser is current-ly in Germany as an exchange stu-dent and her mother, Marietjie,and the principal, André Preto-rius will be representing her atLeeuwenhof.

Visser will be back in South Af-rica tomorrow, but leaves thecountry again on Friday.

Marietjie could only portray herdaughter in a good light and ex-plained how proud she is of herachievement.

“What can I say? I am her moth-er and I am so very proud of her.Monique is a conscious learner,she made use of extra books andtook extra classes in preparationfor her exams.

“She has always been like thisfrom day one. From her first yearat school she has always been ahard worker,” Marietjie said.

Members of the National Sea Rescue In-stitute (NSRI) at Melkbosstrand had abusy festive season.

Local station commander Rhine Barnessaid they were involved in a number of neardrownings in December as well as a drown-ing at Silverstroom beach last week.

On 16 December a 12-year-old girl fromFisantekraal was saved from drowning. Shewas taken to hospital.

On Christmas day they provided medicalassistance to a 28-year-old man from CapeTown who also almost drowned. He was tak-en to hospital.

Boxing Day saw the local rescuers in-volved in many first aid type injuries andmedical calls.

The NSRI members aided a 12-year-oldchild and an 80-year-old woman who bothsuffered from heat exhaustion and dehydra-tion. A young woman (19) was treated aftershe suffered an epileptic seizure on Melk-bosstrand beach. Barnes’s team also helpedlocal firefighters in treating a woman whosuffereda severe asthmaattackon thebeach.

Although they managed to stabilise herbreathing on site, the 32-year-old womanfrom Atlantis died at New Somerset Hospitalthe next day.

They were also on hand to help in the neardrowning of a five-year-old girl at Silver-stroom strand.

“We assisted the lifesavers and medicalemergency personnel in giving her treat-ment. She was taken to hospital in a stablebut serious condition,” Barnes said.

On 29 December a 19-year-old man was res-cued after almost drowning at Melk-

bosstrand beach.The holiday almost took a tragic turn for

Jason James from Centurion when he be-came distressed in the water at 14:15.

A jet skier noticed that James was in trou-ble and helped him to get ashore.

Senior firefighter Norman MacQueen ofthe Melkbosstrand fire station and InspectorCharles van Vuuren from the marine unit ofthe city’s law enforcement services treatedhim for secondary drowning symptoms.

He was then transported by a Metro Emer-gency Medical Services ambulance to NewSomerset Hospital for further medical treat-ment.

On 1 January another resident fromFisantekraal was saved from drowning atMelkbosstrand. The 16-year-old was stabi-lised and taken to hospital by ambulance.

A young man from Atlantis drowned at Sil-verstroom strand last Wednesday after hewas caught in a rip current.

“When we arrived the local lifeguardswere already searching for the man. We aid-ed in the search until the police divers ar-rived and took over,” Barnes said.

The man was presumed drowned and hisbody has not yet been found.

On Friday they assisted a 19-year-old manfrom Atlantis after he had an epileptic sei-zure in the water at Melkbosstrand.

Barnes said it was a busy but successfulseason. “We didn’t have a drowning in Melk-bosstrand. The last thing we want is a drown-ing on our doorstep.”

On behalf of the local NSRI station hethanked the Melkbos fire station, West CoastVolunteer Ambulance Services, Metro Am-bulance Services, law enforcement and para-medic Steward Seini for their assistanceover the past weeks.

Armed gang in Shimansky jewel heistANDRÉ BAKKES

This year started badly for Shi-mansky Jewellery in CanalWalk when five armed suspectspulled off an audacious robberyand fled with several hundredthousand of rand of jewellery.

According to Milnerton policespokesperson, Warrant OfficerDaphne Dell, the men robbed thestore at 12:30 on 1 January.

Canal Walk CEO, Gavin Wood,

elaborates: “Two of the suspectsdistracted the security guard thatwas positioned in the area close tothe store and three entered theShimansky store.

“The suspects who entered thestore were armed and smashedone of the display cabinets, gettingaway with an undisclosed amountof jewellery.

“No shots were fired and no onewas injured.”

Says Dell: “The suspects fled onfoot and were noticed leaving Ca-

nal Walk in a white Honda. Thisvehicle was also reported stolenthe previous week.”

Apparently a security guardclose to the jewellery store noticedwhen the suspects smashed thecabinet and alerted the securitypersonnel via the shopping com-plex’s control room.

The police and centre securitywere on the scene within minutesand are currently investigatingthe incident.

Security footage clearly shows

the robbers pointing firearms atpersonnel in the store.

“We have clear security footageof the faces of the robbers as theyexited the parking lot,” continuesDell.

She adds that in their rush to getaway, the robbers drove throughthe security boom at the parkinglot entrance.

This is not the first time that Ca-nal Walk was targeted, as Wood ex-plains: “We are aware of similarincidents that have taken place at

the centre since its opening in2000.

“However, in the recent pastthere have been no incidents ofthisnature other than theShiman-sky incident.

“We believe that this is due toproactive approach towards secu-rity.”

Wood concludes that the centrewill continue to assess its “rigor-ous” security precautions, by im-proving and tightening securitymeasures on an ongoing basis.

Haar man, Kobus – tóé nog haarkêrel – het die hondjie sewe jaar ge-lede vir haar gekoop toe hulle nogin Londen gebly het.

“Dit was toe ons een jaar uitge-gaan het,” het sy gesê.

“Sy is met liefde teruggevliegteen ’n koste van R25 000. Dit hetons nie gepla nie, want ons is so liefvir haar. Sy is ons ou hondedogter-tjie,” het sy gesê.

Dit was ook Chita wat, met dietrouring in ’n sakkie om haar nek,’n belangrike rol gespeel het in diehuweliksaanbod ’n paar jaar later.

“Ons seuntjie en Chita is ook bes-te maats. Hy vra my elke dag waarsy is en loop en roep haar die heletyd.

“Dit voel soos asof ’n kind nie indie huis is nie. Ons harte is in stuk-ke gebreek,” het sy gesê.

Sy het al die diere-welsynsorgani-sasies en veeartse gebel op soek naChita, maar sonder enige sukses.

Die meeste ekonomevoorspel die resessie se impak salin 2012 voortduur. Daar is steedsdinge soos korrupsie en misdaaden werkloosheid wat mense moe-deloos en selfs bang maak. Endalk het jy ook gehoor dat die ein-de van wêreld hierdie jaar (vol-gens die Maja-kalender) op 21 of23 Desember aanbreek.

Kan ’n mens dus werklik nogpositief wees oor hierdie nuwejaar? Die antwoord is dat jy dit ab-soluut kan doen. Net die feit datjy leef, gee klaar hoop. ’n Nuwejaar is soos ’n nuwe begin met nu-we geleenthede. Die belangrikeding is egter dat ons ‘n keuse het.Elke mens is geskape met ’n vryekeuse. Ons kan kies hoe ons diejaar wil aanpak: met ’n negatieweof met ’n positiewe gesindheid.

Dit is maklik om te sê dat jy po-sitief moet wees, maar hoe doen’n mens dit? Daar is baie manierehoe jy dit kan doen. Hier aan diebegin van die jaar wil ek net vier

praktiese riglyne vir jou gee hoeom positief in 2012 te wees:

. Leef elke oomblik met volledankbaarheid. Die kunstenaarHenri Matisse het gesê: “Daar isaltyd blomme vir diegene wat ditgraag wil sien.” Alsal dit party daemoeilik gaan, moetjy steeds die mooien goeie dinge injou lewe raaksienen waardeer.

. Leef met hu-mor. Lag elke dag.Lag maak gesond.Leer om humor insituasies in te sien.Humor stimuleerdie brein en geeenergie.

. Leef gesond.Oefen en eet reg enhandhaaf gesondegewoontes.

. Leer om te gee. Verander van“ek wil hê” na “ek wil gee”.

’n Mens moet egter ook realis-ties wees. Daar sal in hierdie jaarook negatiewe dinge en teleur-stellings oor ons pad kom. Hoemoet jy hierdie negatiewe dingeen teleurstellings hanteer wan-neer jy daarmee gekonfronteerword?

Dis belangrik om te onthou datdie lewe aan ’n mens met ’n handmet kaarte uitgedeel word. Dit

help nie om daaroor te kla nie ente mor waarom dit of dat met joumoes gebeur het nie. Jy moetspeel met die kaarte in jou hand.Aanvaar die kaarte en doen diebeste met dit wat aan jou uitge-

Cool Runnings satisfies need for speedANDRÉ BAKKES

“Remember not to brake,” says afriend before he accelerates in-nocently down the Cool Run-nings Toboggan course in Dur-banville.

As per instruction, this inexperi-enced tobogganist leans into thefirst turn with surprising ease.

“This isn’t so difficult,” laughsthe rookie as he foolishly temptsfate.

He shoots through the secondturn at 30km/h, but he is convincedthat he is about to break the soundbarrier.

When he reaches 40km/h it al-most feels like he’s travelling backin time it’s so quick.

He might have applied the brakesa couple of times, but he nonethe-less feels likehe just set a land speedrecord.

His friend,who started 10 secondsbefore him, just shook his headwhile he waited patiently at the bot-

tom for the tardy tobogganist.Almost anyone can toboggan at

their own pace, but the real rushcomes from pushing the envelope.

This sport usually requires asnowy slope and a sleigh, but insnowless South Africa an alumini-um course is sufficient.

Cool Runnings is, in fact, the onlytoboggan course in Africa.

Some of the staff have been work-ing there since it opened in 2007, soif anyone knows how to navigatethrough the bobsled-like course, it’s

them.TygerBurger discovered that

most of the 20-odd staff membersrace against the clock when the cus-tomers leave. They are a colourfulbunch of individuals whocontstantly try to better their per-sonal bests.

Richard Mupoperi has been therefor four years and says he has gonedown the track “a million times”.

“I still enjoy it! Each time it feelslike something new,” he states.

Richard’s personal best is one

minute five seconds, which is twoseconds slower than rival ArnoldHatinawedu’s record.

“Momentum is important, butone shouldalso lean forwardandre-sist the urge to brake,” continuesArnold.

Owner Frank Unger says they get400 000 visitors and probably see 1,5million rides annually.

It is a sport for both beginnersand professionals, so make a pointof testing your mettle on the metaltrack if you can spare R30.

Not all rockers are ‘dark characters’LOUISA STEYL

“Our music will be listenable fora long time.”

So says Adam van der Reit,rhythm guitarist, songwriter andengineer for The Summer Under-ground.

With a new lead vocalist in War-ren Alexander, and guitarist, LukeRevington, added to the mix, thisNorthern Suburbs band has under-gone a transformation of sorts.

The rest of The Summer Under-ground is made up of Adrian Lan-geveld on drums, percussion andkeyboards, Brett Reynolds on bassand Sean Schwartz as sound engi-neer.

The band has been playing withthe current line-up for a year, butThe Summer Underground hasbeen around since 2009.

Adam explains that he was of-fered an opportunity to write some

songs for payment, so he put a bandtogether to play the songs.

“It started as a professional stu-dio project that took on a life of itsown,” Adam says.

The band believes that a goodname is essential.

Brett explains that The SummerUndergroundrefers to “the title giv-en to thenotionof not enjoying lightand heat”.

“It was a quip that the previousvocalist came up with,” he says.

The name plays on the stereotypeof “rockers” being dark charactersand as Adam points out: “It doesn’tsound like a normal band name.”

“It’s hard rock ’n roll,” Warrensays of their music.

“It’s ‘kinda’ like the 90s heyday,”Adrian adds.

He says when Warren and Luke

joined the band, they also reinvig-orated it. “Very quickly it gelledvery nicely,” Adrian says.

Adam points out that some songshad to be rewritten to suit male vo-cals instead of their usual femalevocalist.

“It was a rebirth of sorts,” hesays.

Thebandagrees that therewasal-so a new enthusiasm in the group.

“Overall we are a more organisedunit,” Brett states. Before, therewere questions within the groupabout commitment to the band, butBrett says: “The current line-up ischanging all of that.”

The band’s performance at Rockthe River over New Year’s was fullof this new energy.

The band has just finished re-cording their EP, and they have anew album in the works.

“Adam is the band’s primarysongwriter,” Adrian says.

He comes up with the music anddigital phrases, before the songs arehammered into shape, knitting inthe drum line and bass.

With influences that range fromearly rock pioneers, like Black Sab-bath, to the other extreme, like 80sand electronic music, you can ex-pect interesting sounds from thisband.

Matrics do well,but the future?The Western Cape matric class of 2011 hasdone us proud. The province not onlyachieved the best matric pass rate in thecountry, SouthAfrica’s topmatriculant al-so hails from this province.

Kudos too to the Western Cape educa-tion minister, the education departmentand all the other role players who contrib-uted to the province improving its 2010pass rate of 76,8 percent to 82,9 percent.

Another group of people that deserves amention in this success story is the par-ents. Despite the fact that many of themstruggled financially, they still supportedtheir children emotionally and financial-ly. They were willing to make sacrifices inorder to enrol their children at schoolswith a good academic record. Many ofthem spent hundreds of rands each monthon extra classes.

The challenge is now to get all schools,even those in impoverished areas, to pro-duce the same results.

The department of basic education’s de-cision to restrict Model C schools frompaying teacher bonuses and other finan-cial incentives will further weaken the al-ready struggling public education system.

It would be no surprise if some of theseteachers leave the public schools to jointhe private schools where they’ll at leastreceive the recognition – and pay – theydeserve.

Ekhet al baie diere in my lewe gehad, ookhonde. Ek dink egter dat, om ’n hond, ofmeer as een, in ’n piepklein agterplasieaan te hou, geen ware diereliefde is nie.

Jy het beslis die kat aan die stert beet.Ek het nog nooit in my lewe 15 mense bywetstoepassing aangegee nie. Ja, ek hetwel al een aangekla, ’n saak wat in die hofgaan draai het, en dié persoon in die pro-ses sleg tweede gekom het – dit was in diedae toe wetstoepassers nog hul naamwerd was.

As jy dan só goed weet van die soge-naamde 15 persone wat ek sou verkla het,weet jy ook mos wie die skuldiges is. Wil

Dat daar ’n probleem moetwees wanneer ’n hond blaf is ooknie noodwendig die waarheid nie.Sommige honde blaf vir geen rede,sommer vir wind of voëls.

Mense wat werklik omgee vir hulhonde (en bure) en die nodige ken-nis het van hoe om ’n hond te han-teer, het nie die probleem nie. Daar-die honde blaf net wanneer dit no-dig is. Woon langs ’n buurman met’n probleemhond wat vir net sowatses minute in ’n uur nie blaf nie, enkyk of jy nog Blaf-Blaf van Bracken-fell wil wees.

Look before breedingThe article “Euthanasia in spotlight” (Tyger-Burger, 21 December) refers. It is a brilliantidea to make people aware of the unbelieva-bly huge problem we have with “homeless”animals.

The reply from Rene from AACL wasshocking. So what if people get “angry”knowing the figures! It’s about the animals.No, it won’t solve the problem but it willmake it better by preventing some peoplefrom deciding to breed (which is the causeof the problem in the first place).

I volunteered at a shelter for years. It didupsetmewhenananimal got euthanised, butbecause I was aware of this problem, I under-stood and did not judge the shelter. It is bet-ter than to let animals suffer in the street be-cause we are running out of places for them.

Before you decide to breed your animal, doyourself a favour and see how many of thosespecific animals are already in the shelters.You’ll be shocked. There are even rescue“groups” for specific breeds. (eg: border col-lie rescue and many many more). Ratheradopt an animal from these places than froma breeder or someone’s house, encouragingthem to breed further.

Also do your research on the type of dogthat you are interested in, to make sure thathe is the best option for you and that you cansupply him with what his specific breed re-quires. So called “pavement specials” arestill the best breeds with the least health is-sues.

An Epic battle for survivor

Ernst Viljoen will be paired with Elana Meyer during the Absa Cape Epic.

Local Bellville resident, ErnstViljoen, is currently undergoingstrict training and preparationto ride the 2012 Absa Cape Epicin celebration of his recent suc-cessful recovery from prostatecancer.

This will be his fourth entry inthe annual race in the WesternCape and he will devote his partici-pation to those suffering from can-cer and to raise awareness andfunding for Cansa.

As a Team Absa rider, Absa willgenerously donate R1 300 to the or-ganisation for every stage of therace that Viljoen completes – a po-tential total of R9 100 for his efforts.

“Thankfully, the disease was di-agnosed at an early stage and I wasable to beat the cancer,” says Vil-joen. “I am extremely thankful thatI can get back on my bike and rideagain, and enjoy the sport which Ihave been doing for most of my life.It is not something I take for grant-ed.”

Viljoen has been active in thesport of cycling for the past 44 yearsand made a serious conversion tomountain biking in 2006, when Ab-sa – his then employer – became the

title sponsor of the Absa Cape Epic.He has since retired from his

banking career of 28 years and iscurrently a lecturer in financialmanagement at a private college inCape Town.

Viljoen has also completed theBike TransAlp in 2007 and has 20Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tourrides to his name so far.

Diagnosed with prostate cancerin December 2010, Viljoen opted fora brachytherapy – the implanting ofradioactive seeds into the prostate– instead of surgically removing thegland. The procedure was sched-uled for April 2011 allowing him toattend his son’s wedding and com-plete the 2011 Absa Cape Epic inMarch 2011.

Viljoen is now fully recoveredfrom the disease and looking aheadto the 2012 instalment of the world’stoughest mountain bike stage race.

This year Viljoen will be pairedwith Team Absa partner and Olym-pic silver medallist, Elana Meyer.

Viljoen will also serve as manag-er for Team Absa. The team in-cludes rugby legend Joel Stranskyand model Vanessa Haywood.

The Absa Cape Epic will takeplace from 25 March to 1 April 2012.

SUP pros show top formA record number of entries marked thefourth Coreban Summer Series for Stand UpPaddlers (SUP), held at Bloubergstrand re-cently.

The three days of competition in the surfslalom, wave riding and long distance rac-ing resulted in non-stop action.

The contest was held in three days of per-fect weather starting with the slalom event.A rise in swell on the second day saw organ-isers make the call for wave riding. Thethird and final day was quite easily the mostaction-packed SUP day Africa has ever seen.

With the wind subsiding paddlers had toprepare for the 7,5km distance racingaround the islands at Big Bay.

The start of the race saw the set of the daycome through causing many athletes to im-mediately be eliminated.

An error in judgement saw Dylan Frick,Greg Bertish and Colin Heckroodt, whowhere all three in line for overall first placeposition leading the pack, take the wrongcourse opening up the field and allowing Pe-ter Peterson and others to sneak through in-to top position.

As the swell continued to push through,the final rounds of the wave riding went into

full swing. In the end it was Justin Bing whowalked away with the 2011 Men’s Open titlewhile Karina Figl, who showed top form inall three disciplines, finished first overall inthe Ladies’ Open division.

Justin Bing won the 2011 Coreban Stand UpPaddling Summer Series that was held at BigBay in December.
