Volgens Crous is daar verkeerskameras

In ’n onderhoudmetTygerBurger in April

Due to threats, protest action and inti-midation, a decision was taken thisweek not to temporarily relocate high

school learners fromKraaifontein toEersteRiver. The group of Scottsdene Secondary

School learnerswere originally supposed tomove into thenewly completedEersteRiverPrimary School on the corner of Vyeboomand Silverleaf Street, Forest Village thisweek while construction is underway attheir school in Kraaifontein. However, Forest Village residents said

they are unhappy with the plan.

Not informedVincent Merino, chairman of the interim

school governing body for the newly builtprimary school, said one of the main rea-sons for this is that residents were neverproperly informed about the plans.“By the timewewere informed the decisi-

on was already taken and discussed withthe Scottsdene Secondary parents.“We only found out on Thursday when it

was announced over the radio,” Merinosaid. The School Governing Body (SGB) deci-

ded to send an email to the department,

highlighting their dismay. He said Forest Village residents fear the

new school will be damaged by the olderhigh school learners.

Not expected“The second problem we have is that the

department overlooked 16 other schools tocome to this one.“Forest Village is a small and peaceful

community. I think the department antici-pated we will sit back and just allow this. They did not expect us to oppose it,” he said.Scottsdene Secondary learners have been

temporarily relocated for the course of thethird termafter concernswere raised by en-gineers that the school’s buildingmight notmeet structural requirements. Repairs areunderway. The department is also in the process of

installing mobile classrooms at the school.“It is the department’s responsibility to

ensure the building is built properly fromday one.“Now they want to organise 25 buses to

transport 1 330 children and 38 educatorswhich will cost them millions,” he said.A representative from the Forest Village

Ratepayers’ Association said they agree.“Our message is clear. We waited over 25

years for a school. This school was meantto bebuilt in 1992 already,” the representati-

ve told TygerBurger.A community meeting was held on Sun-

day afternoonwhere the decisionwas takento protest on Monday. About 100 Forest Vil-lage marched through the streets on Mon-day, barricading the roads to prohibit busesentering the narrow roads.

DisappointedWestern CapeMinister of Education Deb-

bie Schäfer said she was disheartened athow some community members have oppo-sed the temporarymeasure in suchanunca-ringmanner, given that the school buildingis standing vacant and it is for the benefitof young learners in the Western Cape.“It was my hope that the community

members of Eerste River would, in the inte-rest of education, welcome learners fromScottsdene to the school,” said Schäfer.“It is therefore very disappointing that

specific individuals are depriving theScottsdene learners of this opportunity.”Due to threats made by certain communi-

ty members and in the interest of the lear-ners and educators’ safety, alternative ar-rangementsweremade to accommodate thelearners. The departments says Grades 8 to10 will now be housed in a community hallin Scottsdene while learners in Grades 11and 12 will share nine existing prefabrica-ted classrooms at the secondary school.

Paramedic takes goldLocal paramedic Grant Stewart struck

gold at the 2015 South African JudoOpen Championship held in Stellen-

bosch recently. The 38-year-old blue belt holder obtained

a gold medal in the Masters’ u.90kg catego-ry for men aged between 34 and 39.A resident of Bellville, Stewart is the

branchmanager of ER24’s NorthMetropoleoffice in Cape Town, situated at MediclinicLouis Leipoldt. He also obtained a gold medal for the

group events as the team manager for theboys’ u.10 category.Grant, an advanced life support paramed-

ic, originally from Roodepoort in Gauteng, said: “The tournament was stressful. I wasnervous. During a tournament like this I fo-cus on technique and my breathing duringthe fight. You have to believe in yourselfand your ability. However, you also needknow your own limits.

Judgement“Every fight can change in a split second.

The best judoka is not guaranteed to win asa small mistake or error in judgement cancost you the fight. I am proud of what I haveachieved in such a short period of time.Generally, judokasmy age have years of ex-perience behind them. They usually startjudo at the age of about eight.”Grant, who is registered with the Tyger-

berg Judo Club and Judo South Africa, onlystarted judo training in October 2012.“Myeldest son started judo training in Jo-

hannesburg in 2010. After moving to CapeTown in 2012, we registered him at the Tyg-erberg Judo Club. After about threemonths, myyoungest son decided that he al-so wanted to take up the sport. I decided tostart while watching them train. It seemedlike it was good for one’s health.“The sportsmanship and professionalism

showed by the sensei were very inviting,”he said. His sons also competed at the South Afri-

can Judo Champs this year. Grant’s nine-year-old son obtained a gold medal for anindividual and group event and his 12-year-old obtained a bronze medal in an individu-al and group event. This is the second South African Judo

Champs Stewart has competed and ob-

tained a medal in. He won a bronze medalin the 2013 tournament. He has also won a number of medals in

various Boland and national ranking tour-naments.

Family fitnessGrant advises people to consider partici-

pating in sports because it offers a numberof benefits.“I run, cycle with my family and play a

bit of golf with my sons. I do anything thefamily wants to do together. Family is veryimportant to me. Any sport is good for yourhealth, mind and soul. Judo seems like anaggressive sport, but it is not. If a personshows any aggression on the mat, they willbe disqualified immediately. Judo hastaught my sons respect in sport and to ac-cept defeat,” he said.He added that it is easy to sit on the side-

line and tell your child what to do in a com-petition, until you have to do it yourself.

One only realises how difficult and techni-cal a sport it is once they participate in it.“There are fathers who participate in ju-

do with their children at our club. Adultsshould never give up. Never say you are tooold to start. You do not have to compete atthe highest level. You simply need to enjoyit. Set yourself reachable targets and re-vis-it these targets from time to time. Do notoverdo it,” he said.Grant generally practices twice aweek. In

preparation for tournaments such as theSouth African Judo Open Championship, practice increases to about three sessionsper week.“Training entails fitness, ground tech-

niques (Ne-waza), standing techniques (Ta-chi-waza), armlocks (Kansetsu-waza) andstrangulation (Shime-waza). The name judoalso means ‘the gentle way’.Judo teaches you how to be calm under

any situation and respect for other people,”said Grant.

New technology and vast improve-ments to the availability of ticket is-suing stations will make life for com-

muters at the Bellville Railway Stationmuch easier.

Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott saidthere are currently five ticket windows atthe Bellstar Junction shopping hall.

With recent improvements, the new sta-tion facility now boasts seven additionalticket selling windows, with the potentialto accommodate nine, she said.

“All these windows are facing the con-course with ample queueing space – multi-ple times more than the current queueingspace at Bellstar Junction – without inter-fering with pedestrian movement throughthe concourse.

“An additional defaulters’ ticket windowis provided beyond the access control pointfor commuters arriving at the Bellville sta-tion without a valid train ticket.

“At the defaulters’ ticket window, queue-ing space to buy a ticket is provided out ofthe way of pedestrian movement. The oldstation set-up did not allow for a defaulters’ticket window,” she said.

The MetroPlus subway was enhancedwith five speed-stile gates and a by-passgate.

Scott said the design and equipment weredeveloped for large numbers of commuters.

“It is believed the new design and equip-ment will improve operational efficiencyand train commuters should spend lesstime buying a ticket, access platformsquicker and easier and should have a sig-nificant improved train experience.”

The ticket windows at the Bellstar Junc-tion shopping hall will remain operational.

“Commuters will still have the option tobuy a ticket on the subway’s side, and donot need to go to the new station buildingand walk back to the metro side to accessthe platforms,” she said.

There is no National Women’sDay equivalent for men.Women’s issues, at least in theWest, have been in the spot-light since around 1900, men’shaven’t. Specific men’s yes, butnot men as a whole.

The “patriarchy” was alsoharmful to men. Many peoplearen’t even conditioned to seethis.

Invariably if a woman speaksout about women’s rights, equality and liberation shereceives praise. If a manspeaks out about men’s rights, equality and liberation hereceives contempt. Doublestandards.

“National Women’s Day” wasdue to the protests by manywomen against Apartheid in1956. Some of the women saidthat men didn’t help them. Itwas a Thursday. Many of themen were too busy slavingaway in the mines. But, thatdoesn’t mean much.

No-one is 100% their gender, and has something of theopposite gender within. So,“National Women’s Day” canalso be seen as men, andwomen, acknowledging thewoman, and feminine, within.

ANONIEMEpos

I really sympathise with thosepoor business owners who haveto put up with the street peoplesleeping outside their shops(“Bergies ontsier rusplek”, TBDurbanville, 15 July).

A solution to that is makethem as uncomfortable aspossible during the night. If onebuys veggies at certain shops, they have a fine water spraysystem that automaticallyswitches on and off at intervalsto keep the veggies fresh. Whynot uses something like thisoutside the shops? Pipes andsprinklers could be installedhigh under the overhangoutside the shop. These couldswitch on at night for everyhalf hour or so for 30 seconds,or whatever works. The sprayis fine but wetting and notmuch water will be used. It willalso keep the pavements clean. What do you think?

Verlede jaar was ek bietjie indie nood en moes ek my seunse selfoon verpand by ’n winkelin die Parow-sentrum. Ek kondit egter eers oor twee maandeterugkoop.

Ek’s nogal teleurge-steld.

Karin is dalknet sobekendaswat syberug

weggooikinders, mishandeldes,” praat symaklik oor haar ambassadeurskap by diewelsynsorganisasie Heavenly Haven inDelft.

klink, strooi Karin ’n bietjie “towerstof” oordie grysheid.

tree, sluit in Loukmaan Adams, Bianca laGrange,ClairePhilips, LondonLouwenNurAbrahams.

skryfbehoeftepakkies gee; hul nood is groot,dié kinders is erg minderbevoorreg,” sê Ka-rin.“Die planne hardloop alles ineen – dis

Comic defies stereotypesLOUISA STEYL

@lounotes

“When you’re born a certain way,I don’t think there’s really anyother career choice.”

That’s why Bellville comedian Jaryd Pil-lay decided to pursue a career in stand-up.

The 19-year-old has just won the first#ThatsFunny Comedy Showdown, a compe-tition specifically for up and coming comicsliving in the northern suburbs.

Jaryd says he seems to see life differently.“You need to tell someone, I suppose. Youneed to find a way to express yourself.”

As an introvert, Jaryd didn’t grow updreaming of being a comedian, but towardsthe end of his high school career at FairmontHigh, he started coming out of his shell.

He took part in the school’s pageant andhe needed to come upwith something for thetalent part of the competition. “At that pointI didn’t know thatmuch about stand-up.” Hegave himself a crash course by watching thelikes of Trevor Noah andMarc Lottering be-fore visiting the IndependentArmchairThe-atre where he got enough inspiration to puttogether a set for the pageant.

Defying stereotypesUsing a dancer friend and Indianmusic as

props, Jaryd, kitted out in a turban, had ev-eryone believe he was going to do an Indiandance routine before whipping a micro-phone out of his pocket and joking abouthow racist the audiencewere for a assuminghe’d play into a stereotype and continuingwith his stand-up routine.

“They all loved it,my schoolwas very sup-portive.” After his successful debut Jarydstarted becoming a regular face on stage atTheArmchair’s comedy nights. “I think I’vebeen doing stand-up ever since.”

As an “Indian guy” who says he’s very farfrom Indian traditions, Jaryd says he thinks

as South Africans weare all blending intoone culture. “It’s likewe’re trying to find outwhere we belong.”

His comedy exploresthemes of “cultural dis-placement”, like talk-ing about being an In-dian man growing upin an Afrikaans com-munity, for example.

Jaryd has alreadyshared the stage withbig names such as Stu-art Taylor, Rob vanVu-uren and Marc Lotter-ing and performed atRocking the Daisieslast year. He was alsochosen to perform atthe Savanah Newcom-er Showcase in Johan-nesburg during theComics’ ChoiceAwards.

When he isn’t cracking jokes, Jaryd is aBA live performance student at AFDAwhere he is studying stage and screen act-ing, works as an MC at GrandWest Casino.

He has been performing with the #Thats-Funny Comedy Showdown organiser JoeEmilio for awhile already, so itwas onlynat-ural he entered the competition.

“Everyone brought their A-game,” Jarydsays of his competitors, specifically pointingout Chantal Venter, who he says has lots ofpotential.

He was also impressed with the crowdturnout at the finals held at Meraki in Dur-banville and says it’s great that the comedyscene is growing in the northern suburbs.“It’s nice to see that people are appreciatingand supporting comedy.”

His prize included professional photos by

WildRosePhotographyanda spot at #Thats-Funny’snext big comedyshow, amongst oth-er things.

All round entertainerJaryd says he has hopes of becoming an

The sun was out, fun was had and atthe end of the day, a group of eightmen walked away with a winner’s

cheque of R5000.What started as an innocent kick-about

between fellow students on the “dell”, out-side the University of the Western Cape’s(UWC) cafeteria in 2004, has become amuch anticipated “kings of UWC” event.

The annual event pits students, alumnianduniversity associates in a 5-a-side soc-cer tournament.

The day reinforces the bonds betweencurrent and past students as 16 teams bat-tle it out.

In the end, “S squad” rose to the chal-lenge, beating all comers to the title.

Chad Hare, captain, could not hide hiselation.

“I can’t explain how I feel, we are justhappy that we did this together.

“We have been friends for as long as wehave been here, for six or seven years. Weall know each other through soccer, so it’sa brotherhood. We are a family.”

The team’s Fabian “Takka” Wareleytook home the Lyle Arendse player of thetournament award, named in honour ofone of the tournament’s founding mem-bers.

Hilton Stroud, one of the tournament’sorganisers, said the event was a “timewhere guys from old, who haven’t seeneach other since their time at campus, came in and met each other, braaied andsocialised.

UWC Rector Professor Tyrone Pretori-

us said it was “a fun day”.“It’s good for theuniversity. It’s good for

the university’s reputation and it says alot that people want to be associated withthe university in this way.”

Pretorius, without knowing the speci-fics of the event’s origins, praised the en-terprise shownby the founders of the tour-nament, who were chased off the originalfield at the ‘dell’ 11 years ago.

FaganMuller, Santos captain and one ofthe tournament founders, said studentsused to play for a gatsby and their drinkof choice at the Barn.

“I think that if it wasn’t for this, thenUWC’s soccer team wouldn’t be so strong. It was playing in this (tournament) that Idecided to play for the UWC soccer team, which was prosperous in the end, playingfor the universities national team.”

SAREL BURGER

VasgevatHS Tygerberg is aanvanklik goed vasge-

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Wesley Krotz is without doubt one of thevery best ice hockey players in the country, proven by the fact the Canadian ParrySound Islanders team has acquired his ser-vices.

Bearing in mind, the 19-year-old from Mil-nerton was already selected to representSouth Africa on a senior level when he was15.

“Between the age of 10 and 13, I used toskate with my cousin at every public sessionbecause we enjoyed ice skating so much. One holiday in Johannesburg, we were skat-ing at Northgate Ice rink and the managerapproached us and asked if we would like toplay ice hockey for them.

“On our return to Cape Town, my mothermade enquiries about ice hockey and we im-mediately signed up for the Learn to PlayAcademy that took place on Sunday morn-ings.

I then joined the Penguins Club after at-tending the academy and the next monthwas selected to represent Western Provinceu.14s. That was the beginning and I neverlooked back,” says Wesley.

This young man’s accolades are astonish-ing. Representing his country in Mexico atan international tournament in 2011 he wasvoted the best u.18 player of the tournament. He received this honour again in Turkey in2013, thus making him possibly the only na-tional ice hockey player to receive the bestplayer of the tournament award as both ajunior and senior.

“I have been fortunate to play in Mexico,Turkey, Bulgaria, Spain and New Zealand. You learn a lot by travelling overseas andseeing how other countries play.

“The sport is also much bigger overseasand played professionally. For example theytrain six days a week for up to five hours aday.

“That is one of the reasons why I am so

excited to join the team in Canada. I wantto play well and work hard and become thebest player I can possibly be.

“It is my dream to become a professionalplayer and one day become a coach and helpgrow the sport in our country.

“The Canadian season starts on 6 Septem-ber and I will be flying out, God willing, on4 or 5 September to start this exciting jour-ney in my hockey career.”

Parry Sound Islanders is a club that at-tracts scouts from all the pro teams, andWesley hopes this will give him the opportu-nity to get to the next level.

“I would like to thank Victor Kester, mymentor and supporter in Canada, for believ-ing in me and investing in my dream, andobviously my mother Kathy who is alwaysthere for me and helping me raise funds inorder for me to go to Canada,” said Wesley.V To make any financial donation to help Wesley getto Canada go to: http://www.gofundme.com/x7j3c9h
