But, bad service from an ambulance crew could have caused his death. At about 02:00 on the morning of Wednes- day 12 June mom-to-be, Soraya Davids from Leiden, started having contractions and re- alised that she was about to give birth. With no transport available dad-to-be, Matt Damon, decided that they would have to walk to the Day Hospital. Damon explained that while they were walking they realised that the baby was not going to wait for them to get there. “We were just near the primary school when Soraya said that the baby was com- ing,” he explained. “I had to just leave here there in the cold and started running to the hospital for help.” Getting to the hospital did not save the day because although there was an ambulance there no help was forthcoming. “I tried telling them about the emergency that was happening on the street, but they were not interested, they told me that I must “phone” the emergency number. “That’s when I ran to the police station and luckily there was some help on hand,” he said. At the police station Detective Constables Hajiera Nolton and Andy Maloy were about to leave the station for another incident when they spotted Damon running towards them waving his hands. “At first we thought that he was being chased,” says Nolton. “When he explained the situation we knew that the life of this baby was a first pri- ority, and when we got there the baby was already on its way out, but we did the best that we could with the after-birth proce- dures. “Luckily I have had some experience in this regard and in the past have already de- livered some babies out in the field.” After cleaning mother and infant, the de- tectives secured their safety and well-being before transporting them to the safety of the medical practitioners at the Delft Day Hospi- tal. This was the first time that Maloy was present at a birth out in the field, but he was very happy to have been part of the experi- ence. Brigadier Hendrik Jansen (Delft station commander) praised the two for going be- yond the call of duty and he was impressed with the way they dealt with the trauma. At the time of going to press the Emergen- cy Medical Services were investigating the response from the ambulance staff. Police at Delft collected some baby goods for the baby, nicknamed “Andy” , for Andy Maloy, right, who was on hand to help him come into this world. Youth from Delft were leading the way at Freedom Parkin Pretoria this weekend to celebrate youth activities. There was lots of excitement at Delft SAPS when their

Cadet Drill team boarded a bus to Pretoria after a specialinvitation to a youth dialogue against drugs that tookplace on Saturday.ChiefExecutive ofFreedomPark,FanaJiyane, said that

this event was in response to the call by President JacobZuma for the nation to unite against drug abuse. The group from Delft joined young people from Eldora-

do Park andKliptown inGauteng to engage in a facilitateddialogue to share experiences on fighting the scourge ofdrug abuse and building a better future for themselves.Jiyane points out that when they hosted Youth Day ac-

tivities in Delft last year, he was encouraged by the suc-cess of a community initiative involving the police, educa-tion authorities and parents to stamp out drug abuseamong youngsters in Delft through a cadet trainingscheme.“This resulted in disciplined behaviour at home, im-

proved grades at school and greater social cohesion in thecommunity,” he said.“While youth are leading the way in Delft by breaking

free from the drug-infested lifestyles in which their par-ents are imprisoned, in Gauteng youth are entrappingthemselves in drugs against the wishes of their parents.“We are hoping that the youth dialogue between these

twogroupswouldhelp themshare perspectives abouthowto fight their common enemy.”He also pointed out how this related to the struggle of

youth that began in 1976.“Theyouthof 1976whomwehonour in this youthmonth

made sacrifices so that the youth of today can enjoy thefruits of our freedom.“Today’s youth, who are called “born frees” and who

will be voting for the first time next year are challengedby the evil scourge of drugs which threatens their free-dom.“It is important that these young people are given plat-

forms to talk about how they can engage in this new strug-gle against these social ills,” he said. The event on Saturday was hosted under the theme,

Working together for youth development and a drug-freeSouthAfrica, and theywere addressedbya representativeof the SAPS and chairperson of the Delft Community Fo-rum, Reggie Maart.Theyalso engaged indiscussionanddebatewith empha-

sis on crime and drug abuse among youth, facilitated bycommunity activist Glen Arendse. The main focus was upliftment and empowerment, to

enable youth to make a difference in their lives and com-munities.

A campaign to keep communities cleanand tidy is gaining momentum.

The Own Love Improve Your Street in-itiative is making a difference as resi-dents realise that they can take owner-ship of their environment and create theneat, clean and flourishing neighbour-hood they want to live in.

As joint partners, the residents of Sub-council 4 play a significant role togetherwith the city and the business sector inbuilding social capital.

In Elsies River The Riverton EstateResidents’ Association, under the lead-ership of Steve Ross, embarked on an au-dit of vacant plots and buildings that givethe suburb a bad name.

They reported properties that were be-ing used for illegal dumping and report-ed them to the Environmental Health De-partment who issued warning letters tothe owners of these properties.

In response. one property owner haserected a fence around the property toprevent illegal dumping and to safe-guard the building.

Another property owner has acknowl-edged the compliance notice and is will-ing to co-operate.

He is currently getting quotes to recti-fy the deficiencies and in the meantimehe has promised to start cutting the vege-tation himself.

In three other instances the compli-ance notices were ignored and a contrac-tor is being appointed to clean up theplots. The costs will be added to the mu-nicipal accounts.

This organisation has also started a

landscaping project at a vacant plotwhen a few volunteers started clearingand levelling ground and the rest of thecommunity joined in by donating PVCsheeting, plants, stone chips and rocks.

Workers were also supplied withdrinks and food as they completed thetask of beautifying a part of Riverton.

In future the association is planning tohave at least four community gardens inthe area.

In Uitsig, the community has alsostarted to get into the project and alreadysome residents have been acknowledgedfor their efforts in their gardens.

Proportional representative council-lor for the area, Ronel Viljoen said thatthis area has a high incidence of teenpregnancies, gang activities, drugs, crime and other social problems associ-ated with poverty.

“Amidst all this there are still peoplewho have shown that they have pride intheir surroundings by maintaining theirproperty and creating beautiful gardens.

“We found two homes in Uitsig Ave-nue and hope that honouring these resi-dents will encourage others to make thesame effort to beautify their gardens andyards,” she said.

This initiative is also an opportunityfor all residents to find those places thatmake a difference and let the councilknow about it.

Pictures can be taken on cellphonesand cameras, uploaded at your nearestlibrary on Smart Cape computers andsent to the address below.V Photos can be sent to Cindylee.daries@capetown.gov.za, entries close on Friday 20 September.

Pride & pleasurein their gardens

Local residents from Uitsig who are making a difference in the community with theirgardens are Garit and Magdalena Keffers and Phillip Baron.

Info needed: Police are looking forinformation about the whereabouts of14yearold Octavia Hendricks fromAdriaanse Avenue, Clarke Estate, in ElsiesRiver. She went missing on Wednesday 5June at about 11:00 after visiting a friendin the area. According to information, shewas going to meet an unknown manfrom her MXit contacts. .Brightminds are benefiting fromsome special bursaries at the Uni-versity of the Western Cape. The South African National Za-

kah Fund (SANZAF) announcedthat an amount of R1,129 149 washanded over to the university tohelp 109 bright students from fi-nancially disadvantaged back-groundsSANZAF believes that with a

relevant tertiary education quali-fication it is one sure way of es-caping poverty in a country withsuch a high unemployment rate.“A core function of our organi-

sation is to provide financial sup-port and to assist needy and de-serving students,” explainedMoulana Sarfaraaz Hamza, ad-ministrator for the organisationin the Western Cape. “We recog-nise that education plays an im-portant role in determining la-bour market prospects and as anorganisation we have made a con-certed effort to be responsive tothe dire needs within communi-ties.” Hamza added that up to R3million has been earmarked anddisbursed for education and em-powerment programmes in theWestern Cape with bursary stu-dents spread across all leadingtertiary institutions country-

wide. This fund is the single larg-est registered public-benefit or-ganisation of its kind in South Af-rica. Last year more than 500students benefited from thebursa-ry programme and it is envisagedthat the number is set to grow.“The projects and programmes

are designed to strengthen andimprove those who are most mar-ginalised in society,” commentedMoulanaHassiemCassiem, chair-

person in the Western Cape.Brian O’Connell, rector and

vice-chancellor of UWC, com-mended the organisation for thesterling work it does.He added that young people are

the most vulnerable in society.O’Connell said it requires the

involvement of all stakeholders tosecure an enabling environmentfor communities to thrive and tobecome self reliant.

Bishop Lavis Drill Cadets are on a missionto get more boys to march with them.

On Saturday they will be hosting a con-cert featuring all the members at the hallof Bishop Lavis High School and they’re in-viting the community to experience the funthat the children have as part of this organi-sation.

Joy Crow, secretary of the cadets, pointedout that this show was a repeat of one thatthey held in May, but with very little sup-port from the community.

“We are on a mission to show childrenin the area that they can be part of an activi-ty in their community that can have a posi-tive influence on their lives,” she said.

“People in the community are alwayscomplaining about the crime and gangster-ism in the area, but when it comes to posi-tive initiatives like this they don’t supportit,” she said.

“Our activities are not just about drill-ing, its about learning valuable life skillslike teamwork, achieving goals, but moreimportantly how they relate to each otheras friends in a positive way.”

She added that the life skills activitieswere also a reason why they wanted moreboys to join them.

“We want parents to send their boys tojoin us because from an early age they mustbe taught how to respect girls, how to re-spect themselves, and be a part of some-thing positive in their community.”

The concert will be held in the NGChurch hall on the c/o Lavis Drive and Ko-ppiesdam Road, Opposite Lavis Drive Pri-mary School starting at 16:00, until 19:00,and it will be officially opened by Ministerfor Safety and Security Dan Plato.

Tickets are R20, and will be available atthe door.V More information about the cadets and bookingfor the concert from Joy Crow on 082 634 8552.

SAREL BURGER

dag teen Schotsche Kloof/Wal-mer ’n drastiese verbeteringmoet ondergaan.

geval teen Primrose, terwylKraaifontein se Hands & Heartmet 12-29 teen Hamlets verloorhet.Dit raak vakansietyd en net

enkele wedstryde word Sater-dag afgehandel (tuisspan eer-ste): SKW t Durbanville-Bellvil-le, Valsbaai t Hands & Heart,Primrose tGoodwood, Bracken-fell t Kuilsrivier.

Strict training pays offSTEHAN SCHOEMAN

Gambate in Japanese translates to per-severance – something that HenryBosman and Neill Bruce learned all

too well in their three-month tenure in To-kyo.Now, back home in their beloved country,

the Bellville boys are reflecting on a once-in-a-lifetime experience.“Letme tell you, it was tough.Wewere un-

der no illusion that it would be a walk in thepark, but boy were we in for a surprise.“We were based at the Honbu dojo which

is the international headquarters for Ky-okushin-kan karate. Our day would start

with the cleaning of the dojo and after thatwe would have intensive training.

Rice“Some days we trained up to seven hours.

On a another note, the Japanese eat ricemorning noon and night and surprisinglynot as many fish as you would think. It’squite expensive over there,” said Henry.Neill reflects on the many intensive ses-

sions they had. “You don’t ever fear that youare in pain. On Tuesdays we had fightingclasses with their u-65kg, u-70kg and u-80kgchampions.”“Those guys are at another level of tough,

sometimes I would take kicks to the leg so

that I can barely stand on it, but somehowyou pull through and only check on your in-juries after the fight.”“Looking back on it, it made me and Hen-

ry so much more tough, not only mentally, but physically as well. We were also in-structed to give some classes to six to 13-year-olds. Thatwas fun and it helped uswithour own technique.“Asyou stand in front of the class teaching

them the various techniques, you have toconstantly check them and yourself to makesure you are doing things correctly.”

BetterSince their return, their balance, under-

standing of this ancient practice and stami-na have improved dramatically. They have also revised their training

schedule to keep the intensity high.“These boys really surprised me. Just

looking at them made me realise that theseare not the same boys that I sent to Japanthree months ago.”“They are physically, mentally and tech-

nically better. I’m excited to see them per-form in upcoming tournaments,” said Shi-han Hennie Bosman of the Welgemoed dojo.Come August, when they will be compet-

ing in the Len Barnes Memorial Tourna-ment in Durban, they are sure to be moreprepared for the challenge.

LIAM MOSES

Engen Santos FC will face two season-defining moments this week whenthey take on Mpumalanga Black Ac-

es and Chippa United in the Premier Soc-cer League (PSL) promotion/relegationplay-offs.

The People’s Team did well to fight theirway back into contention for promotionafter a disastrous start in the NationalFirst Division (NFD).

But their hard work could all be in vainif they fail to beat Aces and Chippa in thetwo home games on Thursday 20 and Sun-day 23 June.

Head coach Ian Palmer admits bothmatcheswill be crucial, but saysa losswillnot be the death of his side’s promotionhopes.

Setback“I don’t think this game is do or die, be-

cause we still have to play Chippa soon af-ter that. If we lose it won’t be good and itwill be huge setback,” he says.

“But we are thinking about that. We aregoing full-out to get one over Aces and putus in the driving seat. Aces are in the driv-ing seat, because they are the only teamwith a win. The playing field will be lev-elled as we will be at home.”

Santos had an undesirable start to theplay-offs last month when their firstmatch, away to Chippa, finished in a goal-less draw.

Chippa went on to lose 1-0 to Aces in thesecond play-off match.

The Mpumalanga side now top thestandings ahead of their clash againstSantos, who have not had much successagainst Aces this season.

But Palmer will hope recent form andpast results are not an indicator of whatThursday’s result will be.

RegenerateThe People’s Team drew 0-0 against Ac-

es in their last encounter in Mpumalangain April, while Aces beat Santos 1-0 at Ath-lone Stadium in the season opener last Oc-tober.

Palmer says the fixtures have not beenkind to his side, but he is confident histroops will recover before their Cape der-by against Philippi’s Chippa.

“Aces are blessed because all theirgames are spaced widely. After the matchagainst us, they have six days before theyplay again. The draw actually favoursthem,” says Palmer.

“Chippa also play us and then have togo to Aces three days later. It’s about howquickly you recover. We have the SportsScience Institute of South Africa on ourside to help us regenerate for the nextgame.”

FixturesSantos’ fixture against Aces will kick-

off at Cape Town Stadium at 19:30 onThursday 20 June.

Chippa United will host Aces onWednesday 26 June and the final fixtureof the play-offs will see Santos travel toMpumalanga to face Aces on Saturday 29June.
