Crime fighting in the community

is getting a boost with training

for Neighbourhood Watches.

The Department of Community

Safety is serious about safety and

fighting crimebyhosting this train-

ing initiative in various communi-

ties to facilitate these organisations

operating successfully.

A group of volunteers from Bish-

op Lavis, Bonteheuwel and Malawi

Camp recently completed one of

these courses at the Bishop Lavis

SAPS Training College and judging

by their reactions this training has

inspired them to encourage more

residents to play their part in keep-

ing communities safe.

Facilitator of the course,Malvern

de Bruyn, said that he was very

proud of the volunteers and their

dedication to fulfill their role in

keeping their communities safe.

This course is very important

for them to fully understand what

their role is when fighting crime,

he says.

With this training it brings a lot

of value to their community with

their new skills.

It teaches them how to respond

to crime when it happens and how

to work with the different struc-

tures within their communities

ranging from the police, police fo-

rums and reservists.

In many cases they are also the

first people to arrive on a crime

scene so they are also taught how

to manage that scene to keep it safe

for police to do their investigations.

Most important is the communications

skillswhendealingwith people because they

must understand what their rights are when

doing their patrols in their neighbour-

hoods.

All the trainees were very happy with the

training that they receivedandexcitedabout

going into their communities with their new

knowledge.

Nazma Swarts was one of those who was

outspoken about making this knowledge

work for safety in the community.

Many of us live in communities where

crimehas takenover the streets, but the time

has come for people to realise that ifwe stand

together we can really make a difference,

she said.

With the skills that we have learned here

we must go out there and encourage our

neighbours about how they can play their

part in community safety.

Another trainee, Caroline Armentville

pointed out that she never realised the im-

portant role that neighbourhood watches

can play in communities.

Crystal October also enjoyed the training

experienceandsaid that peoplemust face the

realities of what is happening around them

and do something about it.

We want to have communities where it is

safe to walk the streets again, she said.

Wewant neighbourhoods where our chil-

dren are safe, where they can play in parks

and enjoy themselves without fear, but the

time has come for everybody to be part of

making their areas safe.

We must stop ignoring it when people we

know are committing crime; if we keep quiet

we are encouraging crime.

Cluster co-ordinator Mike Hoffmeester

was also very happy: I know that the train-

ees will go into the field with a new found

passion, because theywant their community

to stay in a safe environment.

High school learners are taking a stand

against drugs.

The Representative Council of Learners

(RCL) of Roosendal High School in Delft has

taken abrave stance at their school, and they

are hoping that it will spread to all schools

in the community.Theyhavevowed to eradi-

cate drug use and abuse from their school

and learning environment.

The RCL chairperson, Matthew Hartnick

(15), a Grade 10 learner, said that it is part

of their strategy to create a safe learning en-

vironment for their school.

We have embarked on this programme of

action, to reduce the crisis through peer edu-

cation, because drug abuse eventually

spreads and affects even the innocent at

school, he said.

Too many children are using or abusing

drugs, pay no attention in class, are disrup-

tive because of substance abuse and then dis-

turb learners thatwant to learnorprogress.

The RCL also requested regular search

and seizure operations at school and in con-

junction with the SAPS Social Crime Pre-

vention Office, they do searches at the

school.

Acting principal, Chrizelda Layman said

that she attends to at least 10 incidents per

month of allegations of substance use report-

ed by learners.

The school then compels these learners to

attendmandatory testing sessions at the day

hospital and the Matrix Programme at Delft

South Clinic, she said.

During a recent test at least six of the

learners were tested positive for dagga.

At Roosendal the teachers have also part-

nered with several stakeholders in their

quest to address the scourge of drug abuse.

She identified the following community

partners such as, Tehilla Youth Organisa-

tion, Ma-Afrika Tikkun, Parent-to-Child

Support Group, Delft Day Hospital and the

Matrix Programme at Delft South Clinic

and the Delft CPF.

Tehilla also takes part in a Learner-Par-

ent Support Group at the school and holds

sessions every Thursday.

The school also promotes several activi-

ties as part of their intervention pro-

grammes that includes a Hip-Hop Street

Battle face-off drug event, and The Mandela

DayDrugProgrammewhich looked at alter-

natives to drug abuse.

In partnerships with the Department of

Basic Education, Deutche Bank, Afrika

Tikkun, andHeartlines, a Youth Citizen Ac-

tion programme training was held to equip

the RCL to deal with social concerns.

Layman added that more help is needed to

fight the scourge of drugs.

n Skool word meestal gemeet aan twee

maatstawwe: die matriekslaagsyfer en die

sukses van oud-leerlinge, nieteenstaande al

die aktiwiteite en insette van leerlinge en on-

derwysers.

Volgens Sharon October, een van die lede

van die alumni-organisasie, spog die skool

met verskeie noemenswaardige oud-leerlin-

ge, soos die sportsterre Vernon Philander en

AlfonsoThomas, en opkulturele vlak, Jenni-

fer Jones en Priscilla Babu, asook afgestu-

deerdes in vele vooraanstaande beroepe,

maar word alle Ravys gekenmerk aan die

sukses waarmee lewensvaardighede onder-

rig is.

Sy vertel talle oud-leerlinge het intussen

verhuis, sommige na meer gegoede areas,

ander na ander provinsies en die buiteland.

Oud-leerlinge se betrokkenheid by die

skool was die afgelope kwarteeu beperk tot

motiveringspraatjies by gradeplegtighede

en ondersteuning van die jaarlikse karnaval

met die afskop van n disko.

Met die begin van di veldtog beoog ons

om die beste te h van beide wrelde. Die be-

trokkenheid word uitgebrei, maar die tradi-

sie word voortgesit met die bekendstellings-

funksie, het hy ges.

dag 12 Oktober, waartydens bande met vori-

ge klasmaats gesmee kan word.

The Delft Big Band and the The Cecil

Jacobs Outreach Project are the last

two projects to benefit from the Cape

Culture and Heritage Foundation.

Each organisation has received R250

000 from the trust to keep their projects

going.

The Cape Culture and Heritage Foun-

dationwas started 10 years ago, with the

aim of supporting local arts and culture

projects.

The foundation forms part of Grand-

Wests corporate social investment initi-

atives and so far R10 million has been

paid out to organisations playing amea-

ningful role in their communities.

Some of the other organisations who

have benefited from the Trust include

the College of Magic, Dance for All, the

Jungle Theatre Company, Jazzarts

Danscape, the La Rosa dance compa-

ny, theMagnet Theatre physical theatre

company, the New Africa Theatre Asso-

ciation, The Steelband Project and the

Zip Zap Circus School Trust.

The trust has also been involved with

theatre productions, likewhenArtscape

received assistance from the Foundati-

on for staging the Grade 12 isiXhosa set-

work, Amaza, enabling 5 585 children

from 63 different Western Cape schools

to attend a professional stage producti-

on of one of their curriculum setworks.

A Place in the Sun People of Mitchells

Plain is a musical produced by Artscape to

celebrate the rich history of Mitchells Plain

through song and dance. Funded by the

Foundation, the project aimed to shift per-

spectives of a place of poverty, violence and

despair to one of hope and possibility.

ning to Distant Thunder art exhibition at SA

Nelspruit, Mpumalanga at the beginning

of September.

Centre manager Mike Pick said that

this was a proud moment for the centre

and it will inspire them for the future.

All nine provinces took part in four

different categories, and in the Western

Capewe should be very proud becausewe

were the only province with a winner in

each category, he said.

Forus the cherry on top iswinning the

first prize for Centre Achievement, but

we had a runner-up from Stellenbosch in

the Learner Achievement category,

Worcester provided a runner-up in the

Educator category, and the runner-up in

the GroupAchievement was fromPorter-

ville.

Pick added that the educators and staff

at the facility must be praised for their

part in this award.

Everybody has played a big part in

this achievement because without their

dedication to the centre and the learners

it would not be possible.

While we are very happy with the

award we are not resting on our laurels

because there is still a lot of work to be

done in the field of adult education.

Wewant the community to see that we

are doing good work here. Young people

who have not finished their education

must be here to finish their schooling.

Adults who did not get the opportuni-

tieswhen theywere youngmust also take

up the challenge of educating themselves,

and acquire new skills, he said.

Classrooms filled with bubbly children

who eagerly answer their teachers ques-

tions that is what you walk into at the

Carel du Toit Centre in Parow.

Something not many people would expect

when walking into a school which cares for

childrenwho are deaf andhave hearing disa-

bilities.

The centres aim is to teach deaf children

and children with language problems to

speak so that they can function optimally in

a hearing world.

The schoolwas started in 1973 byProfessor

Carel du Toit, who was the head of the Ear,

Nose and Throat Department of Tygerberg

Hospital.

There are currently 174 pupils at the

school and receive all the attention they

need.

Before admission the child is evaluated to

see what is needed from the school to assist

the child.

Oncea child is placedwe tryanddoevery-

thing practical to assist them, says Valerie

van der Merwe.

Its somuch easier when the children can

identify what teachers are talking about by

seeing a picture and then learning the

words.

She says children could be identified earli-

er.

We need to get the child as early as possi-

ble to ensure that the process works quicker

and that the child will be able to talk and

head off to a mainstream school. Although

wewill help all children, the earlier the hear-

ing problem is identified the better, as chil-

dren will pick up more things between birth

and three years of age, she explains.

Many of the children at the school are still

in dire need of a cochlear implant which

costs R200 000, and parents are always trying

to raise funds to ensure that their child can

be assisted.

Adri Combrink, an educator, demonstrat-

ed to TygerBurger how having the cochlear

implant makes a difference.

Without it the children will not hear a

word being spoken or a sound; or they will

hear it softly. This cochlear implant defi-

nitelymakes a positive difference in the chil-

drens learning experience.

Van der Merwe says another challenge is

that Carel du Toit also need more donors.
