While Russell tried to protect his family he was shot and stabbed, and still he had the strength to pick up the two perpetrators si- multaneously and throw them out the front door. Hospital Russell is in a stable condition in the ICU. TygerBurger talked to the traumatised Lizelle on Monday while she was at the hos- pital. Her tale is grim. “We were all at my dad’s 60th birthday in Big Bay on Friday evening and then we left at about 11:55. We live only five minutes away. I drove us home while Russell held the sleeping Casey. When we pulled up to the house our daughter was upset, so Russell tried to put her to bed and I went to the kitch- en to get some water in her bottle. As I took the cap off I heard footsteps behind me... When I turned around I saw a man standing in the door... I just said ‘No, no, no, no, no’...” According to Lizelle, the man (who was carrying a knife-like garden tool) held a crooked finger to his mouth and gestured for her to be quiet. This threat, however, wasn’t enough to keep Lizelle from screaming. She continues: “The second guy then came through the door, cocked his gun and point- ed it straight at me... I just kept on focusing on the bashed-up gun.” After Russell heard his wife scream he came “flying down” the passage and Lizelle ducked into the scullery to hide. The sounds of tumult, six gunshots and the baby screaming in the background fed her imagination and adrenaline – her worst fears were blossoming before her Says Lizelle: “He (Russell) kicked one of the thugs in the chest and jumped in top of him. With one hand he tried to strangle the guy and with the other he grappled with the gun. It was just waving around everywhere. That was when he got shot in his shoulder. “Then the second guy started stabbing him from the back and Russell was shot a second time in his thigh. I don’t know where he got the strength, but Russell then picked up both of the men and threw them out of the house.” Shot Lizelle soon discovered that the men stole one of their two cellphones, but she couldn’t find the other to phone the police. The adrenaline-fuelled Russell just paced up and down and exclaimed repeatedly that he had been shot. Lizelle got Casey and then raced to the hos- pital with the panic-stricken Russell. Since the incident on Friday she has lived in a daze. The extreme trauma has her in a vice-like grip. God willing, Russell will recover com- pletely, but one suspects it might take much longer for the family’s psychological scars to heal. Lizelle concludes: “That’s what I hate them for. They’ve made me scared of every- thing. I can’t be on my own, I can’t drive... And I was an independent person...” Table View police spokesperson, Lt Eliza- beth Munro says that it has been determined that the suspects fled in a small vehicle and that no arrests have been made. Anyone with information may contact Det W/O Tertius van Wyk on 021 521 3300. Golden Arrow Bus Services application

against MEC for Transport and Public

Works, Robin Carlisle, and two compa-

    nies operating existing interim MyCiTi

    services was recently dismissed with

    costs in the High Court.

The City of Cape Town roundly wel-

comed the judgement in the case, since

it threatened to halt the further expan-

    sion of MyCiTi services.

This is wonderful news for the people

of Cape Town. It means that current ne-

gotiations for long-term contracts to op-

erate existing MyCiTi routes, as well as

those in the rest of Phase 1A and Phase

1B, can continue and those contracts can

    be concluded. Importantly, this rulingal-

lows us to implement our vision of af-

    fordable and integrated public transport

for all the residents of Cape Town, said

    mayoral committee member for trans-

port, roads and stormwater, Brett Her-

    ron.

Golden Arrow Bus Services, which is

also an operator of existingMyCiTi serv-

ices in Phase 1A, applied to the court to

compel the city to enter into a mediation

and arbitration process around areas of

dispute, and to prevent the city from go-

ing ahead and negotiating and conclud-

ing a 12-year contract in terms of the Na-

tional Land Transport Act (NLTA) to op-

erate MyCiTi routes in Phase 1A and

    Phase 1B.

The judge said that the process of es-

    tablishing an Integrated Public Trans-

    port Network was extremely complex.

    He found that compulsory arbitration

and mediation where parties could not

    reach agreement was inappropriate.

If the city were obliged to reach con-

sensus on every issue and with every

participant in the process, failing which

it could be compelled to go to mediation

and arbitration, it could become endless-

ly bogged down, the judge said when

    handing down his judgement.

Being compelled to a process of media-

tion and arbitration would make it im-

possible for the city to fulfil its statutory

mandate, as required by the NLTA, to

take steps as soon as possible to inte-

grate services into the larger public

    transport system.

The judgement said that the relevant

section of the NLTAmeant a contracting

authority, such as the city, was obliged

to negotiate but was not obliged to agree.

    Golden Arrows application to compel

the city to negotiate in good faith was al-

so dismissed. The judge said that the alle-

gation that the city did not negotiate in

    good faithwas a strong allegation,which

    implied fraud or dishonesty.

He found that the city was not obliged

by section 41 of the NLTA to negotiate

with Golden Arrow Bus Services about

compensation for its vehicles and assets

which would be made redundant by

Phase 1A andB. The City has not refused

these negotiations at all, but the parties

have negotiated to deadlock on these is-

sues. The fact that the city and Golden

Arrow hold different views cannot justi-

fy an inference of bad faith orunreasona-

bleness on the part of the city.

We welcome this judgement. It is

good for Cape Town, concluded Herron.

n lang seereis in die Kaap aangekom so

    skynlik baie opgewonde maak.

fase. Dit gaan oor die Leerdam-gesin, wat

    saammet JanvanRiebeeck opdieDromme-

daris uit Holland na die Kaap vertrek.

    Die Leerdam-gesin, hul boerboel Dom-

krag en die friesperd Runnik gaan almal

    aan boord.

Hierdie eerste boek van baie as James

dag gekom, maar as dit by illustrasies kom,

    kenaar.

    Die redes hiervoor is talloos.

    James is skynbaar bietjie kleurblind...

Ja, ek is eintlik heeltemal kleurblind, lag

    hy.

    was groen!

Peter voeg by: Ek kan nie verstaan hoe-

kom n kleurblinde ou nou n grafiese boek

    Hendrik grootoog laat wonder: Storms,

    skeurbuik, sonbrand en seerowers... ek

wonder watter nuwe avonture wag vir ons

    hier?

Afhangend van hoe gewild di boek is,

    kandaar tot ses opvolgverhale geskepword.

Die sagteband-boek van 48 bladsye is be-

    skikbaar teen R140.

Golden Arrow Bus Services has extended

its sincere apologies to all commuters

who have been adversely affected by the

    ongoing national bus strike.

Bus operator Golden Arrow said in a

statement on SABCs website on Sunday

28 April, its services in the Cape Penin-

sula will remain suspended this week.

This follows a deadlock in wage talks

between trade union, the South African

Transport and Allied Workers Union and

    management, read the statement.

The union wants a 13 % wage hike

while management is offering 7,5 %.

Big top being cruel to animals

Members of the No to Animals in Circuses and Captivity group on Facebook and the public

protested against the use of animals by the McLaren Circus. PHOTO: ROWENA HENDRICKS

    ROWENA HENDRICKS

About 80 people, including members of the

No to Animals in Circuses and Captivity Fa-

cebook group and the general public, held a

protest on Saturday afternoon against the

use of animals for entertainment by the trav-

    elling McLaren Circus.

The protest follows soon after Carte

Blanche aired a story Circus Elephants,

exposing animal cruelty at the Brian

Boswell Circus where the elephants were al-

legedly being beaten behind the scenes.

TheMcLaren Circus has been stationed at

the Jan Burger Sport Complex in Parow

North for the past two weeks and have just

extended their stay here for a third week,

due to the popularity of the circus.

During the peaceful protest held on Satur-

day against the use of animals by the

McLaren Circus, the protesters were all

spread out on the corners of McIntyre and

De Grendel Road, armed with posters with

    anti-cruelty messages printed and written

on them. Some even had black stripes paint-

ed on their faces and a few were chained to

each other and to the robot poles.

Theywere shouting Stop animal abuse in

circus! and Free the animals! among oth-

    ers.

Some protesters also handed out pam-

phlets stating that the circus is the saddest

show on earth and cruelty is not entertain-

    ment.

Although the protesters did not disrupt

the traffic, members of the local police pa-

    trolled the area.

    NikkiElliott, founder of theNo toAnimals

in Circuses and Captivity Facebook group

and protest organiser, says the use of ani-

mals in circuses is one of the biggest atroci-

ties today. Supporters of the circus support

    cruelty to animals, she says.

Elliott, who stated that the group protests

at every single circus all over Cape Town,

said this was a legal protest.

These are all still wild animals. Imagine

putting your pets, your domesticated cats in

cages at home. These are wild animals and

they should not be caged, says Elliott.

According to Councillor Leonore Van der

Walt: I share their grievances about ani-

mals being used in circuses, she says.

However, some of the protesters seemed

to have no knowledge about the McLaren

Circus. One of the protesters was very un-

    happyabout the elephants beingusedby this

circus. The McLaren Circus does not have

    elephants, she says.

Arnold Dickson, manager of the McLaren

Circus, who also watched the protest, says

they are used to these kinds of protests.

We came to watch them for a few minu-

tes, but we have a show to get back to. He

later added: There were less than 100 pro-

testers in total, and yet we have sold out

    showsalmost everydaywithabout 5 000 peo-

ple attending the circus over the weekend

alone. Just look at this long line of people for

our next (15:00) show. That in itself says a

    lot, says Dickson.

Caring for our animals is the one thing

we at the McLaren Circus do best, every

    single day of our lives.

There are two words in the

    English language which set my

senses on edge like a fingernail

    scraping on a blackboard and

    they are spokesperson and

    chairperson.

It seems to me that if a

woman speaks on behalf of an

entity or is elected to chair an

    entity, she must figuratively

    undergo a bi-lateral mastectomy

    and a radical hysterectomy to

    render her genderless. In the

case of a man it is far easier as

a couple of snips with the

kitchen scissors and the is job

    done.

    SA prides itself on gender

    equality and advancing women

in the workplace so why not

give a woman credit and refer

    to her a spokeswoman or

    chairwoman?

    Political correctness has been

    described as pretending to pick

up a dog turd by its clean end.

Dit is hartseer om te sien hoe

die mense van die ACVV die

    saak klaarblyklik toesmeer en

    hul skouers optrek asof niks

gebeur het nie (Child sex shock

    at ACVV creche, TygerBurger,

    24 April).

    Hulle het nou net terug

    gestaan en gekyk hoe hierdie

    kinders se lewens verwoes

word. Ons kan maar net hoop

en bid vir hierdie kinders wat

betrokke is, dat hulle eendag die

    ware betekenis van intiem-wees

leer en vervulde lewens kan lei.

    Vir die seuns wat betrokke

    was hulle het almal sielkundi-

ge hulp nodig voordat dit te laat

is. Ons lewe in n tyd waar pas

Ek reageer op die briewe en

    SMSe van doodstrafgesindes.

    Daar is absoluut niks goeds

te s van iets so afskuwelik

    soos die doodstraf nie. Daarom

    het Christus slf dit ook

    verwerp.

    Doodstraf kan tog nie werk

    sonder vrees, haat, vergelding

    en onvergewensgesindheid nie

    almal doodsondes. Enige

    regdenkende mens kan dit

    verstaan.

    My teenkanting is eerstens

    gegrond op Christus se duideli-

    ke lering, en tweedens die

    wreldwye neiging om dood-

    straf af te skaf.

Meer as die helfte van die 194

    lande waaruit die Verenigde

    Nasies (VN) bestaan, het dit

    reeds afgeskaf Nederland so

ver terug as 1870, Brittanje in

    1965, Frankryk in 1989 en

    Suid-Afrika in 1995. Daarom is

    die wreld se vooruitstrewend-

ste lande juis di lande wat hul

    rug daarop gedraai het.

    Geen land kan mense meer

    na willekeur teregstel nie, nie

    eers die wreld se grootste

    boelies soos Amerika en China

    nie.

    Doodstrafgesindes moet s

hoe hulle jaarliks 18 000 moor-

    denaars doodmaak, wat nie

    eens verkragters en padmoorde-

    naars soos dronkbestuurders

insluit nie. Moet ons ook nou

    soos die bendes mekaar Sondag-

    middae stenig en uitmoor?

    Doodstraf is n Middeleeuse

    afskuwelikheid, wat ons brose

    land gespaar moet bly.

    Daar bestaan nrens enige

    wetenskaplike of empiriese

    bewys dat doodstraf hoege-

    naamd n titsel afskrikwaarde

    het nie.

    Mense wat sulke onwaarhede

    versprei, moet met hul bewy-

    se vorendag kom.

Dis ook n mite dat dit enige

    sogenaamde berusting

    teweegbring.

My hele lewe lank is Christus

    my enigste rolmodel. Mense

    wat met my verskil, moet

    besluit wie hulle sn is.

The sale of drugs is a call for

    concern, particularly in the

    Western Cape and South Africa.

    This in part, has generated

    many questions and quick

    responses have been that those

    involved want to make quick

money, as a result of a huge

    profit margin.

    Drugs commonly sold in

    South Africa are cocaine,

    heroin, Ecstasy, marijuana and

Quaaludes. Why is it so easy to

get a dose of these drugs with

relative ease, in spite of ade-

    quate security measures the

    government has put into place.

Are these drugs from within or

imported? Who is to be blamed,

    the government? Are the ports

of entry this country so vulnera-

ble? The law is flexible to those

who are engaged in this line of

trade. The execution of a South

    African lady who was caught

with drugs in China was not

    enough warning to them and

    meant nothing to the authority.

I am not proposing a death

    sentence to drug traders, but

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Probleem l

    by geweld wat

    cool is

Die afgelope paar weke is daar n warm

    debat in TygerBurger se brieweblad

gevoer rondom die kwessie van doodstraf.

Aan die een kant het die voorstanders

beweer misdaad is wel laer in lande waar

Daar

waar n gesin kinders moet koester, n

skool verder moet opvoed, maar ook waar

n samelewing moet ondersteun en liefh.

    Geweld is vandag heeltemal aanvaar-

baar. In elke liewe fliek of TV-produksie

ry. Luister na musiek, kyk na rekenaar-

speletjies, lees boeke, sien net hoe

    harder en gewelddadiger sport geword

het. Hoe meer goed en mense opge-

blaas en weggeskiet word, hoe meer bloed

spuit en borrel, hoe beter. Dis vermaak-

lik. Geweld is cool.

    want to make the following

    suggestions;

    The court should not grant

    bail application to suspects who

    are involved in drug business.

The sale of drugs goes togeth-

    er with prostitution. Prostitu-

    tion should be made completely

    illegal.

    The community should help

    alert Law Enforcement officers

    about the premises where drug

    business is taking place.

If all the drug dealers are sent

to jail, our country will become

    less violent. Our children will

    concentrate more in school.

    Money that was spent on

buying drugs will be put for

    better use. Rape, women and

    child abuse issues will be

reduced. There will be no street

kids. If the above remedies are

    taken, South Africa will experi-

    Above all, policy makers have

to save the nation from getting

    VNasionale Trekklavier Dagword Saterdag

    is nie.

Dis juis dit waarmee Sandra gesukkel het.

Ek moes n realiteit binne hierdie absurdi-

teit skep.

    So, ekmoesbaie laewegkrap,maaruiteinde-

lik was ek mal oor Rita. N haar man se

doen nie, was almal so ondersteunend.

Dit

was wonderlik.

V Bespreek vir Die Leos by Computicket.

    Prinsloo belowe.

Sy lagnet lekker, al is glamourdie laaste

dingwat nmens dink n veteraan soos Sand-

    ra kort.

In haar laat sestigs wil dit voorkom of sy

nou besiger is as ooit, beter is as ooit. Sy het

pas n Fista vir haar rol as n tienjarige

Leos genader. Toe het n groep akteurs by

Hiervandaan was daar bitter min tyd oor

Dis baie min tyd vir so n groot en lang stuk.

    Dis boonop n komplekse stuk.

    nmanvirwie synie liefwasnie. Syhet haar

toe in n bubble afgesluit.
