Pro-Active DesignerHello and welcome to my Portfolio. I am a Canadian from Toronto trying to make a life in the Transportation industry. I enrolled at Umeå Univeristy because I believe in creating a wholestic design approach. With indepth meaning and desire. Over the course of the past year at Umeå and various internships I have learned more than just design. But also how to work with an international team of like minded individuals and styles. All of the experiences has lead me to become a better critical thinker and sketcher that can fit into your creative team! I want to work for you to create the next great design!

As a Canadian I’m a very active individual who bikes and skis in my free time. Being surrounded by nature is a source of inspiration for me and also a way to relax and reflect. As a source of inspiration; moving keeps my brain active, and thus some of my best ideas come during a long bike ride or relaxing after a ski run in the chalet.

I look forward to hearing back from you! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Back in 2012, George Brown Institute of Design created a Charette expo that looked to the future of transportation within the Toronto area. 10 Teams were created to look at issues such as: “How to encourage sustainable transportation in the suburbs”, “How do we move people and products in the megaregions in the future”, “The source of energy and its distribution” and more. The team I was a part of was: “Beyond the car envisioning a sustainable mobility vehicle”.

PAT (People and Things) looks at what is wrong with our vehicles, and transportion today, how do we go about fixing it, and then building the milestones along each to the eventual solution. With the final result being a 1:1 mock-up of a vehicle

that would exist in the year 2040.

This was no easy task. And a team of 14 people were assigned to this project. The team consited of the Creative Director of Industrial design firm Apparatus Inc, Director of R&D at Magna, Senior Industrial designer, Freelancers, CAD specialists, Engineers, Environmentalists, Students (myself ) and Creative strategists.

With a rough idea of the form, Apparatus and the industrial designers continued to work on the CAD, manufacturing and UI/UX. I helped with creating a design for the screen displays within the car that were brought to life in Adobe Aftereffects.

Motorbikes have been very one-sided for a very long time. Male, Loud, and Dangerous. In the coming years this will probably change. The introduction of the electric motor and its introduction to the market will indevitably change how people ride and how people concieve motorbike riders. The Harley-Davidson Livewire, Zero mo-torcycles, and the KTM freeride all have begun the movement. Each targeting a different niche.

With the collaboration project with Kiska, we were asked to think outside the box and look deeper into the meaning of riding a motor-bike. As non-riders ourselves we looked at all the details of those who currently ride and why we don’t. At first glance we could not figure

out a reason why anyone would ride a motorbike. If in fact we were to convince ourselves we did not know how to at first. So we broke it down even further... just like many other “sports” the reason you ride is because you “Feel Something”.

So we realized we are looking for emotions that help to define what a person wishes to experience in life. These emotions we learn will make a better story that leads to more motorcyclists. Thus we created a persona to help us.

Kim is a 24yr old programmer from Oslo who finds excitment in Surfing. Walking in the mountains of Norway isn’t exciting enough! But surfing is difficult in Norway. So riding a Motorbike is a substitute... or perhaps the new greatest thrill!

A strong bass sound is produced by the top tank speaker. As you get closer to the sound, the more powerful the emotion and feeling becomes.

“To The Heart”

Pitch Perfect. Sound is emulated from the Bang & Olufsen speakers located on the top and sides of the battery/ engine. This is a jewel element that brings a new level of attention to the bike. The product begins to match other iems the owner has, such as their headphones and portable speakers.

The final design is a culmation of softer forms that appeal to women more than men. The visual weight of the bike is hightened by the floating battery position, and bicycle frame construction. Carbon is used for most of the design to aid in both effeciency for the electric power, and for the handling. Careful attention was paid to the cooling of the motor with venting on the front, and on the top under the speaker. The enlongated seat allows for many seating positions, and was inspired by surfing. The sport that Kim enjoyed before she bought the bike.

Lincoln Continental‘For the Autonomous Age’

Page 41: Tyler Macdonald 2016 Q1

Lincoln has fallen from grace over the years. From its Hey-Day in the 1960’s to the shame that was the 1980-2000’s. Its recent rebirth has seen some improvements, however it still is a shadow of its former glory as the “it” car. From Presidents to movie stars, Lincolns were the crown jewels of upper society. With a style that was sophisticated, mature and non-intrusive, it becomes hard to realize it lost its way. And what it considers itself today. Ford has decided to make Lincoln a by-product of the Ford platforms they share. Thus creating vehicle proportions no different than the normal-man car. So after considering what Lincoln was, what it is today, I set about to push what Lincoln will mean in the future.

What this means is that Lincoln must return to its position of ambassator for the trend-setters. Those who are famous, influencial, and powerful. Larger body styles that are no longer related to the Ford’s that underpin them now. This Lincoln is the “Future Classic”. A new continental that will continue to be present in culture many years after it is built. Exactly how the Continetal Mk4 from 1961 is shown today.

When I refer to the occupant being more important than the vehicle itself, I mean that it is important for people viewing the car to know how important the occupant is.

“Design language for an age where people only care about the occupant”

Page 42: Tyler Macdonald 2016 Q1

“Monolithic” was the form inspiration of the origianl MK4 Continental. This theme continues here.

“Inside- Out” is the idea that the inside of the vehicle is more important than the exterior. How is this expressed? A light emitting channel directs the eye because we no longer look at headlamps with Automous driving.

Producing a clay model in 4 days was to help verify the unusual proportions. Front and rear overhangs were verified and along with the wheel arch shape.

The Grill design has evolved over the course of the brands history. This design is inteded to bring back the 1961 Continental vibe.

Scanning the clay resulted in a better understanding of the form on screen. Some quick Alias lines were made to clean up some edges and proportions some more.

I have worked for 2 years as a Bicycle Designer for Faction Bike Studio, located in Chicoutimi Quebec. While here I learned a great deal about the manufacturing processes needed to take a design all the way to mass production. Either in Carbon Fiber, Aluminum or Steel. In each case I learned, and every new project became better and better. I got to design over 30+ bicycles with Faction Bike Studio. Many for well known brands and start ups. I also was a part of the brand development for 2 large brands where we got to start from

scratch. Due to confidentiality issues I cannot show you all the work I have done at Faction.

I consider myself as a serious rider. I have raced bikes in the past and consider it my main after hours passion. I love to ride fast!! I primarily MTB, but I do enjoy riding on the road as well. Especially when there is a good group of riders who want to sprint for the stop lights, and to the coffee shop.

“Biycles are my passion and I’ve been fortunate to have designed them too!”

Audi Seasons‘Light in Motion’

In abstract: Transparency is beyond sight. Light is able to shape and define our behavior in many ways based on the time of year, the intensity or the color. Humans are very sensitive to changes in light, so it becomes relevant to know how to change and modify it.

Our area of interest is north continental countries that experience a constantly changing environment through Seasons. Both light and weather fluctuate immensely and rapidly. Thus having a profound impact on the culture, habits, and emotions

that people experience within this region. This vehicle will be able to transform based on the Seasons to better enhance the users experience.

The purpose of this project is to visually communicate how light can effect and influence people’s emotions and senses in a vehicle, based on the environment which the vehicle exists in.

How we drive cars is based on the pre-concieved idea of comfort. The fact we sit in a fairly relaxed position (almost as if we are on a couch) makes for a removed driving experience. Engaging the driver in a new, more thought-provoking driving position will not only restyle a car, but also create a far more engaging experience.

The pursute of more effecient aerodynamics in aviation helped push some radical ideas forward. There were also other benefits such as fewer G-forces in such extreme seating positions. The most radical

and perhaps the most interesting was the prone position. This has the pilot lieing on their belly face forward. With such a position the cross section is halfed. Making it far more aerodynamic. Also the heart works less hard to get blood to the brain because the legs are not pooling with blood under heavy G’s.
