Chelsea’s handsome, neo-Baroque
exteriors hide a richly multicultural mix of
students and staff, a world-renowned art
and design library, and cutting-edge art
and design facilities. Outside, Chelsea
has London’s largest open-air gallery
which hosts all sorts of events from film
screenings to large scale installations, with

to the present day! Chelsea is one of
the University’s smaller Colleges with
1,750 students, and it has a long and
distinguished history going back more
than a hundred years.

The warm, close-knit community spirit ofhistoric Wimbledon, our smallest Collegewith just 1,100 students, is integral toits success in producing outstandinggraduates of fine art and theatre design.Just an easy 15 minutes by train fromthe centre of London, its well-equippedstudios, workshops and exhibition spacesare surrounded by leafy open spaces.Students comment that the College is farenough away from the centre of Londonto have real space to think and work in,but close enough to be able to accessLondon’s rich cultural life. The recentrenovation of the 150 seat theatre toincorporate sound and film studios hasfurther enhanced the facilities there.

Teaching and credit transfer
More overseas students now apply to University of the Arts London for art and design courses than to any otherUK institution. As a consequence, there is a real mixof nationalities with students from over 120 countriescurrently studying across the six Colleges.
Teaching at UAL
Teaching at all the Colleges is practice-based, and isdelivered in a variety of ways, including individual and
group tutorials, projects, industry briefs, seminars, lecturesand museum, gallery and studio visits. Feedback onstudio-based project work takes place through discussionwith your fellow students as well as tutors, while somecourses make use of more formal written work.
Integrated students will find we place a strong emphasison individual autonomy. You will spend much of yourtime independent of teaching staff. You will not usuallyfind ‘classes’ as you know them but instead, you will begiven the support you need to direct your own study, take creative risks and develop confidence. You will enrolonto between 2 and 6 mandatory units while you are here, depending on the course you choose and how longyou stay.
Semester students will be strongly supported during yourstudies and meet regularly with specialist staff responsiblefor your course. Courses provide a structured learningexperience, and you will enrol onto a minimum of 2mandatory modules, with the flexibility to choose from arange of electives that suit your study needs. There is alsothe opportunity to participate in a European study trip.
Whichever programme you choose, our faculty (or‘teaching staff’ or ‘tutors’ as they are called in the UK) arealso practising artists, designers and communicationsprofessionals in their specialist fields. The quality of theirteaching has been officially recognised by the Quality
Assurance Agency, the UK’s quality watchdog for HigherEducation.
Your advisers may ask to see a copy of the CourseHandbook, which describes the academic content andstructure of the courses. These are not currently availableon-line but we can email one to you if you ask us to.
Equipment and facilities
Each College boasts specialist equipment and excellentfacilities, including stunning galleries, dramatic workspacesand performance venues, and unique library and archivalcollections. Students joining the University gain accessto a huge range of learning resources and may borrowmaterials from any of the College libraries. The University’sarchives and special collections contain items datingfrom the 15th century to the 21st. The University alsouses virtual learning environments, as well as othertechnologies, to provide resources, information andcommunication tools.
The credit system at UAL All BA degree courses at University of the Arts Londonare credit rated. You are awarded credit points whenlearning is successfully assessed and you have completeda learning unit. The smallest units in the scheme have20 credit points and each individual credit point normallyequates to 10 hours of learning. Learning occurs in threeways: there is taught or tutor directed learning, learningthrough access to School and College facilities, andself-directed study and learning time.
Assessed work includes project work, preparatorymaterials, your log and written assignments, and otherwork as appropriate. 120 credits are available for each yearof study (generally 40 credits per term), and in order to gainan honours degree, 360 credits must be obtained in total.
Transcripts At the end of your time here, we will provide you with aRecord of Study and Achievement, which gives detailsof the units you have studied with the number of credits, and your UAL letter grades.
