THE Eastern Cape Department ofHealth has stopped supplying pri-vate clinics and pharmacies withfree government vaccines, whichmeans parents will now either have

to pay vast amounts to have their babies andchildren vaccinated at these facilities, or makeuse of government clinics where the vaccinesare still available to the public at no cost.

Thisdecisionwasmadeby thedepartmentbe-cause they were “not comfortable with the ideathat private clinics and pharmacieswere charg-ing a levy on vaccines that we are providing tothem free of charge,” saidSizweKupelo, spokes-person of the EC Department of Health.“These vaccines are available at all public

health facilities at no cost,” Kupelo added.Dewald van Eck, owner and pharmacist at

KlinicareLorraine,saidtheyusedtoprovidethefree state stock vaccines and then only chargeda levy.“Thiswasaservicewedelivered to thepublic,

because government clinics are often so busy

and people don’t want to stand in long queues,”Van Eck said.But Kupelo said that was “an unfortunate ex-

cuse”. “We are doing everything in our powerto improve our services. Currently we cover84%ofthetotalpopulation. Ifpeoplehaveaprob-lemwith long queues at the government clinics,they can pay for the vaccines at the private clin-ic.”According to Van Eck, parents who opt to

make use of private clinics or pharmacies canexpect topaythe followingfees forvaccinations*

(estimated costs):

Total = R5240“Mostmedical aids do pay for these vaccines,

but not all of them, so some parents will haveto pay cash,” Van Eck said.Could this mean that parents would then

choose not to have their children vaccinated?Not necessarily, believes Teresa Hayward,

registered private midwife in Port Elizabeth.“I don’t think people will not have their ba-

bies vaccinated as parents want the best fortheir children and will either use medical aidorgo togovernment clinics.This is anewprac-tice anyway. Private clinics did not always getfree vaccinations,” she said.As a health professional, Hayward said she

is very pro vaccinations. “Your baby does needthese injections as these diseases can reallyharm or kill your baby. Babies are most at riskin the first two years therefore we recommendprotectingyourbabyassoonaspossible.But thedecision remains that of the parent whether tovaccinate or not.”Kupelo in the meantime gave an assurance

that all government clinics have enough stockavailable.

Police inUitenhage are concerned regard-ing the alarming increase in the theft outof motor vehicles in the area.Anumberof incidentshavebeen report-

ed to police where valuables were left in-side vehicles and suspects gained en-trance to it and stole these valuables.“Owners are requested to double check

and ensure that the vehicle is actuallyproperly locked before leaving.“We want to warn the public to be more

alert when they park their vehicles,” saidpolice spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart.

The Police also provided the followingsafety hints:*Do not leave your vehicle unlocked

when you are away from it, even for onlya short period.

*Make sure all windows and doors aresecured before leaving the vehicle.*Do not leave your property (including

loose change, shopping bags, etc) in plainview in your vehicle.*Take your valuables with you or se-

cure them in the glove box or in the bootcompartment.Do not do this in the parking lot, as

thieves could be monitoring the area.*Be on the lookout for someone who is

acting suspiciously and report it to the po-lice.

“For the destitute living under the stars,and those living in shelters put together fromscrap, this can prove to be an enormous hard-ship and even life threatening,” said Rotari-an ShaunGilbert from theRotaryClub ofUit-enhage South.

This club is holdingwhat they call “WinterNights”where the public of Uitenhage are re-quested to donate blankets or good conditionsecondhandwarmclothing,which theRotar-ians will distribute to the needy in the com-munity.

On Friday, 29 May, Rotarians will gatherat the open area next to Engen Penford Con-venience Centre at the corner of Graaff Rein-et Road and Penford Avenue. Blankets andclothing can be dropped off between 17:00 and22:00.

The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South will

have a stand at the above-mentioned open ar-ea and intend having a warm fire going.

“Met ’n rekordgetal van 15Oos-Kaap kore wat vanjaar in-geskryf het, sal een van die17 streeksfeeste eerskomendeDinsdag (19 Mei) in twee sessiesaangebied word by HoërskoolStrelitzia op Uitenhage,” hetZietsman gesê.

Die koorkompetisie is as ’nproeflopie deur dieATKV in 1977aangebied en was so suksesvoldat dit nou al vir die 38ste opeen-volgende jaar gehou word. Orga-niseerders sê die aantal koregroei elke jaar en vanjaar is daar185 inskrywings ontvang.

Zietsman het verduidelik datdie kompetisie uit twee rondtesbestaan. In die eerste rondteword 17 streekfeeste landwydaangebied waar beoordelaars na

kore uit verskillende streke luis-ter.

“Daarna sal slegs kore watgoue sertifikate (80% en meer)ontvang het in aanmerking komvir ‘n uitnodiging na die finaal,”het Zietsman gesê.

pils between the ages of 5 and 13 year of age,who are in the beginner, initial and Grade1 phases of musical tuition.“Eachparticipantwill receive a certificate

and a report sheet. The competition willsteer away from distinguishing betweenwinners and losers in determining medal-lists,” said Nicky Bosman, SASMT Secre-tary.As the SASMT committee consists of mu-

sic educators committed to the idea of musiceducation as a holistic and ever- evolvingprocess.“The emphasis will, instead, lie on award-

ing particularly commendable performanceaspects. Medals will therefore, for instance,be given for The Most Enjoyable Perform-ance or The Best Stage Presence,” said Bos-man.

)Admission is free and refreshments willbe sold at the event. It will be held at Strelit-zia High School in Uitenhage on Saturday,May 23rd from 09:00 onwards.

Dié twee is vir hul duette met vyf goue,twee silwer- en ’n bronsmedalje bekroon.Boonop het Thia ook vir haar solo-uitvoe-rings verskeie medaljes ontvang.’n Bonus vir die twee tieners was om ge-

kies te word vir die Suid-Afrikaanse spanwat teen die einde van die jaar aan die wê-reldbyeenkoms in Los Angeles in Kalifor-nië gaan deelneem.Albei ontvang musiekonderrig by Franz

Geldenhuys in Jeffreysbaai.Die twee se duet-vriendskap het juis in

Renowned political and trend analyst, JPLandman, sees the shortage and intermittentsupply of electricity as the major constrainton the South African economy at present.

Speaking at a breakfast of the Motor Indus-try Staff Association (MISA) at Automechani-ka Johannesburg, he said it was vital thatpower generation projects to ease the situa-tion be fast-tracked.Landmanprovided detailed facts and statis-

tics to support his contention that a satisfacto-ry and stable supply of electricity is vital notonly for the effective functioning of industryand business - especially manufacturing - butit also had a very negative effect on businessconfidence and the sentiment of the generalpublic.He highlighted the massive effect the lack

of regular maintenance over the years hashad on the state of the generating equipment,saying the maximum capacity of Eskom and

non-Eskom power generationwas 44 149mWbut only 29 000mW is being generated in re-cent times which equates to a 34% shortfalldue to planned and unplanned maintenanceand repairs.Landman said that demand was running

at 31 000mW and this situation where de-mand far exceeded supply had to be rectifiedurgently.However, on the positive side Landman

added that therewas ongoing substantial in-vestment in infrastructure by the govern-ment.
