Health

• Is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being– In humans, it is the general condition of a person's

mind and body, usually meaning to be free from illness, injury or pain.

Wellness

• Is an overall state of well-being, or total health.– Wellness is generally used to mean

a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being.

Physical Fitness

• Fitness: The ability to carry out daily tasks easily and have enough reserve energy to respond to unexpected demands in the day.

• Active Living: A way of life that integrates physical activity into daily routines.– Taking stairs– Walking to work or school– Playing outside

Prevention

• Is practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury.– Washing Hands– Getting yearly check-ups– Obeying rules– Vaccines– Being Active

Stress

• Stress: The reaction of the body and mind to handle everyday challenges and demands.– Stress typically describes a negative condition or a

positive condition that can have an impact on a person's mental and physical well-being

Lifestyle Choices

• The manner in which an individual chooses to live his/her life.– Examples:• Vegetarianism• Vegan• Hippies• Being healthy

Substance Abuse

• Is the wrongful use of a legal or illegal substance.– Such as:• Alcohol• Marijuana• Ibuprofen• Codeine• Vicodin

Nutrition

• The process by which the body takes in uses food.

• Food Guide Pyramid: A diagrammatic representation of recommended portions of the five basic food groups, plus fats and oils

• Daily Requirements– Fruits: 1-2 cups, 2 servings a day– Vegetables: 1-3 cups, 3 servings a day– Protein: 2-6 oz., 2 servings a day– Dairy: 2-3 cups, 3 servings a day– Grain: 3-8 oz., 6 servings a day

• Allowances– Fats/Oils: 3-7 teaspoons – Water: 8 servings a day of 8 oz. (64 oz. total)

• Balanced diets reduces the risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease and with lower blood pressure in adulthood.

• Diets rich in foods containing fiber, such as some vegetables and fruits, may reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Malnutrition

• Malnutrition: Lack of proper nutrients in the diet.– Malnutrition is technically a category of diseases

that includes undernutrition, obesity and overweight, and micronutrient deficiency among others.

• Undernourished: Not eating enough food to keep a healthful body weight and activity level.– Lack of calories and protein in the diet
