to the nearest millimetre. Not a single screw, no nails, no glue. The job of being the general contractor to build this fascinating and unique in the world constructionbrought challenges which a international team of carpentersultimately overcame with bravura.

Complex inner lifeIt is not only the exterior walls of the Sound Box whichare masterpieces of construction but also the infrastructurecomponents which we installed inside the Swiss Pavilion:the load-bearing structure, which also forms the walls, con-sists of 225 CNC-milled, glued elements, each 9 m long.Because the body of the building is elliptical in shape, eachelement has a different radius.

The construction of the spiral staircases was equallycomplex. Compared with that, the insertion of 800 cast, 9 cm thick glass cylinders for the windows was almostchilds play and the installation of all the domestic ser-vices (electricity, sanitation, heating, ventilation, air condi-tioning) was virtually routine procedure.

Sein oder nicht sein? Fr einmal keine Frage.

Ein temporres Theater mit 900 Pltzen, in dem unteranderem Hamlet ber die Bhne ging knapp zweiMonate gengten, um es aus dem Nichts zu bauen. DiePlanung des System-Baus dauerte etwas lnger. Einerder Grnde: Im Hinblick auf einen Wiederaufbau an an-deren Standorten haben wir die Fliegende Baute(DIN 4112) auch als Ortsfestes Bauwerk nach DIN1055 berechnet und genehmigen lassen.

Auf Beton-Fertigelementen, die wir als Funda-mente aufs Gelnde verlegten, ent-standen dann Infrastrukturen, dieRaum fr grosses Theater boten in einem Bhnenhaus mit vier Tr-men und zweistckigen Brckenfr Technik und Schnrboden, mitLicht- und Ton-Regierumen, Gar-deroben, Heizungs-, Lftungs- undKlimaanlagen...

To be or not to be? For once there was no question.A temporary theatre with 900 seats, where among otherthings Hamlet was to be staged it took us just twomonths to build it. Planning the building system tooksomewhat longer. One of the reasons was that, with a viewto reconstructing it in a different location, we had theTemporary Building (DIN 4112) also engineered andapproved as a Permanent Structure under DIN 1055.

The faades and roof were clead with beaded steelsheets, mounted on sound- and heat-insulting pre-cast slabs.

On ready-made concrete blocks,which we laid on the site as a foun-dation, arose the infrastructure pro-viding room for large-scale perfor-mances on a stage area with fourtowers and two-storey bridges forequipment, and a loft, with areas forlighting and sound directing, ward-robes, heating, ventilation and airconditioning systems.

Das Ganze erwies sich statisch und akustisch alsKnacknuss: Basis des Saalbaus ist ein Traggerst, dasaussen mit Spanplatten und innen mit 50 mm starkenfurnierten Platten verkleidet ist. Ihre Anordnung und dieGebudeakustik wurden zusammen mit dem AkustikerProf. Karlheinz Mller konzipiert und optimiert.

Where Mozart, Mahler +Co.played first fiddle . . .An empty trade-fair hall. Five weeks later it was anacoustically perfect concert hall. Our job was to design andbuild the 67 m long, 30 m wide and 14 m high shell with2.5 m thick walls and ceilings, build on a containerisedstructure with changing rooms for the artists and incorporatea stage for the orchestra and a stand with 1620 seats.

The whole thing turned out to be structurally andacoustically a tough nut to crack: the basis of the hall is a load-bearing framework which is clad on the out-side with coated chipboard panels and on the inside with 50 mm thick veneered panels. The design andacoustics of the building were developed and refined in co-operation with the acoustic expert Prof. KarlheinzMller.

Die beiden modularen Bausysteme sind fr dieWeltausstellung entwickelt und nach genauer Planungin krzester Zeit auf die grne Wiese gestellt worden.Just in time. Die Tragkonstruktionen und Gebudehllensind problemlos zu demontieren und werden, nach Ab-schluss der Expo 2000, anderweitig eingesetzt.

As acontractor to the company Pergola we developed both mod-ular building systems to meet the specific requirements ofthe Expo 2000 and installed them on a green field withinshort time following an exact program . And it will be greenagain after the World Exhibition because the buildingswill all be easily dismantled and moved somewhere else.

keit in Taten umgesetzt. Wir haben

den Pavillon als Generalunternehmer

gebaut.

m Anfang stand eine Frage des Architekten undSzenographen Uwe Brckner, mit dem wir bereits

Titanic-Ausstellungen realisiert hatten: Knnt Ihr so-was auch? Das Projekt, das er auf den Tisch legte,erwies sich als hochkomplex: Duales System Deutsch-land AG ein Unternehmen, das Konzepte fr umwelt-gerechte Produktion, Verpackung, Entsorgung undWiederaufbereitung entwickelt plante einen Pavillon,der die abstrakten Begriffe Nachhaltigkeit und Kreis-laufwirtschaft sicht-, greif- und sprbar macht.

Ein technologisches Experimentierfeld Die Cyclebowl steht fr nachhaltigen Umgang mit Res-sourcen und wurde deshalb als recyclingfhiges,energiesparendes System konzipiert. Die tragendeStahlkonstruktion etwa ist vollstndig verschraubt und lsst sich nach der Weltausstellung, wie alle an-deren Bauteile, in kurzer Zeit abbauen und weiter-verwenden.

Im Innenraum des Pavillons wurde mit Ventilatorenund einer Luft-Wasser-Mischung ein Tornado simuliert.Als Generalunternehmer waren wir fr die Planung derentsprechenden Installationen und Steuerungen zu-stndig. Auf Standardlsungen konnten wir dabei eben-so wenig zurckgreifen wie bei der Klimatisierung: Frausgeglichene Temperaturen sorgten feine Kapillarroh-re, in denen Wasser durch den Pavillon floss, das tags-ber in Erd-Tanks und nachts ber die Fassade gekhltwurde. Sensorengesteuerte Lamellenffnungen regel-ten die Luftzirkulation. Kurz: Die Cyclebowl steckte vollwegweisender Innovationen. Sie zu realisieren, war eineChance, die sich nicht alle Tage bietet.

t began with a question from the architect and setdesigner Uwe Brckner, with whom we have already

produced the Titanic exhibitions: Could you do somethinglike this? The project which he put on the table turned out to be extremely complex: Dual System Germany Ltd a company which develops concepts for environmentallyfriendly production, packaging, waste disposal and recy-cling, was planning a pavilion designed to make theabstract terms of sustainability and the cycle economyvisible, tangible and apparent.

A scene of technological experimentation The cyclebowl stands for using resources carefully and wastherefore designed as an energy-saving structure whichcould be recycled. The load-bearing steel structure itself isentirely screwed together and after the World Expo, like allthe rest of the building, it can be quickly dismantled andreused.

Inside the pavilion, a tornado was simulated, usingventilators and an air/water mixture. As the general con-tractor we were responsible for planning the necessary in-stallations and control systems. There were no standard so-lutions to fall back on for the air conditioning either:constant temperatures were provided by fine capillary pipesin which water flowed through the pavilion, which wascooled in subterranean tanks in the daytime and on thefaade by night. Sensor-controlled louvred openings con-trolled the circulation of the air. In short: the cyclebowl wascrammed full of pioneering innovations. The opportunity tomake them a reality was one which does not come everyday.

one negative embossed layer. These

layers can be moved over one another pneu-

matically allowing the pavilion to be

shaded and made darker.

Zwei Fragen an Uwe Brckner. . .Welche Botschaften vermittelte die Cyclebowl?

Sie liess den Besucher das Prinzip von Kreislufen erleben

als unendliche Entwicklungsspirale aus Ursachen und Wir-

kungen, aus Aktion und Reaktion. Die Dramaturgie der Aus-

stellung machte mit Grafik, Inszenierungen, Licht und Ton

sprbar, dass der Mensch Motor aller Kreislufe ist.

Sie sind nicht nur beim Ausstellungskonzept, sondern

auch architektonisch neue Wege gegangen. Warum?

Ziel war es, Gebude und Ausstellung zu einem Ganzen zu

verschmelzen. So war zum Beispiel der Wasserkreislauf

gleichzeitig Teil des Klimasystems und der Ausstellung: An

einer Stelle standen die Besucher pltzlich im Regen.

Sie konnten vor dieser Natur-Erscheinung unter Schirme

flchten und beobachten, wie das Wasser in Becken gesam-

melt und Pflanzen zur Verfgung gestellt wird. Wasser wurde

so als Ressource und Teil des Lebenskreislaufs erlebbar.

Two questions for Uwe Brckner . . .What messages was the cyclebowl designed to convey?It allowed visitors to experience the concept of circulation an end-less spiral of development , made up of cause and effect, action andreaction. The dramatic effects of the exhibition used graphics, stag-ing, light and sound to show that man is the driving force behindall circulation.

You broke new ground not only in the concept of the exhibition but also architecturally. Why was that?The aim was to blend the building and the exhibition into one. Forexample, the circulating water was both part of the air condition-ing system and part of the exhibition: at one point the visitors were suddenly standing in the rain. They could take refuge from this natural phenomenon under umbrellas and observe how the water was gathered in channels and supplied to plants. In this way water could be experienced as a resource and as part of the cycleof life.

A compliment to us, too In fact we contributed not a little to the success of the event with thewhole temporary stadium infrastructure. The centrepiece was Court no.1 a 10,049 seater, fixed onto a steel grillage with approx. 250 screwpiles. The whole was designed and built specially for this occasion.

A perfectly operational stadium with excellent sightlines andbest conditions for the athletes is to be built on Bondi Beach in thesmallest possible footprint. That was the specification at signing ofcontract for our project team, 12 months before the Olympic Games.

At the same time we were commissioned to build 11,000 seats forthe basketball and handball arena in the Dome of the SydneyOlympic Park and 3000 additional seats at the newly built cyclingarena in Bankstown. Intense planning begann.

Then we sent in the big gunsIn all, we shipped over 1200 tons of grandstand material to Australia. A further 400 tons of building materials were purchased locally. Experi-enced Nssli crews, supported by the Australian partner AW Edwards

Pty and local teams, put up the three structures within three months. Thedismantling and shipping back began while the Games were still goingon. The reason was that the surfers wanted their beach back as quick-ly as possible, in fact within a month at the most and in its original con-dition. Now Bondi Beach is again the domain of relaxation and body worship while our stand material is already being used some-where else.

perfekt organisiertes, gigantisches Sport-

fest. Bevor es stattfinden konnte, war

ein bewhrtes Team am Werk, das zu sei-

nen siebten Spielen antrat in der Disziplin

temporre Bauten.

The Olympics down under were really onelong sports party. Before it could begin,an experienced team was at work there whichwas entering its (magic number!) seventhGames in the Olympic discipline of erecting temporary buildings

hope we put on a nice show today nach dem Gewinn derGoldmedaille im Beach Volleyball brachte die Australierin Nata-

lie Cook die allgemeine Stimmung in Sydney auf den Punkt. Kurz zu-vor hatte sie zusammen mit ihrer Partnerin Kerri Pottharst in einempackenden Final die favorisierten Brasilianerinnen geschlagen:Sport, Sonne, Show vom Sydney Organizing Committee for Olym-pic Games (SOCOG) perfekt organisiert, im eindrcklichen Stadionan der berhmten Bondi Beach. Its the best venue weve ever play-ed at, sagte der kanadische Spieler Conrad Leinemann dazu undfgte gleich an: The Australiens have really outdone themselves.

Zum gelungenen Event haben wir nicht unwesentlich beige-tragen mit der vollstndig temporren Bauinfrastruktur. Kern-stck war der Court no. 1 mit 10 049 Sitzpltzen, abgesttzt aufber 250 Stahlpfhlen und einem Trgerrost aus Stahlprofilen.

Am Bondi Beach ist auf engstem Raum ein funktionelles Stadion mit besten Sichtverhltnissen fr die Zuschauer und opti-malen Wettkampfbedingungen fr die Sportler zu erstellen. Solautete die Vorgabe an unser Projektteam bei der Vertragsunter-zeichnung 12 Monate vor der Olympiade.

Gleichzeitig wurden wir beauftragt, 11 000 Sitzpltze fr dieBasketball- und Handballarena im Dome des Sydney OlympicParks und zirka 3000 zustzliche Sitzpltze im neu erstellten Velo-drome von Bankstown zu liefern. Die intensive Planung begann.

Was folgte, war eine MaterialschlachtGesamthaft wurden ber 1200 Tonnen Tribnenmaterial in Schiffs-containern nach Australien verfrachtet. Weitere 400 Tonnen Bau-material wurden lokal zugekauft. Erfahrene Nssli-Montagecrews,verstrkt durch australische Equipen, waren ber drei Monate vollan der Sache, um die Tribnenprojekte zeitgerecht abzugeben. Die Demontage am Bondi Beach begann noch whrend der Olym-piade. Grund: Die Surfer wollten ihren Strand mglichst schnellim ursprnglichen Zustand zurck, fein gesubert. So dominiertenvier Wochen spter wieder Freizeit und Krperkultur.

Welchen Umfang hat diese temporre Infrastruktur?

Sie umfasst temporre Bauten wie Hallen, Tribnen, Zelte, Generatoren,

Fussgngerbrcken, Verpflegungsstnde, Terminals, Toiletten, aber auch

Zune, Beschilderungen und Dekorationen und noch einige Arbeiten mehr.

Die Gesamtaufwendungen betrugen zirka 400 Mio. australische Dollar.

Was waren die Herausforderungen in der Planung und Erstellung ?

Die bestehenden Bauten und Anlagen wie Parks und Strnde mussten

mglichst lange unbehindert funktionieren. Die Bauablufe und -zeiten

der temporren Infrastruktur wurden optimiert. Zudem stellten wir sicher,

dass diese Infrastruktur zurzeit funktionstchtig war und die notwendige

Flexibilitt garantierte, um den wechselnden Anforderungen der Betreiber

gerecht zu werden.

Wie kamen die Bauten an, welche Nssli geplant und erstellt hat?

Das Beachvolley-Stadion, das Velodrome und die Basketball- und Hand-

ballarena im Dome haben perfekt funktioniert und waren sehr erfolgreich.

Das Beachvolleyball-Stadion wurde vollstndig temporr gebaut.

Welche Lehren konnten Sie im Zusammenhang mit der temporren

Infrastruktur ziehen?

John Barraclough is Executive Director, Development and responsible for the Overlay works for the Sydney 2000Olympic Games.

What exactly are Overlay works?The Overlay included all temporary works such as demountable buildings, seat-ing, tents, power generators, footbridges, food courts, transport terminals, signage,fencing, look of the Games fitout and many other temporary works. There wasapproximately 400 million dollar of Overlay works associated with the deliveryof Olympics.

What were the challenges in the planning and implementation?There were quite a few, like maximising the period of time the existing venues orpublic facilities such as parks and beaches could operate in their normal use mode.This meant minimising the construction and dismantling time, ensuring the tem-porary facilities were as safe as permanently built facilities and maintaining flex-ibility in construction to meet the continuing changes in stakeholders requirements.

How would you comment on the venues Nssli designed and built?The Beach Volleyball, Velodrome and the Basketball/Handball (Dome) venueswere extremely successful venues. Beach Volleyball was a totally temporaryvenue while the other two venues were modifications to existing facilities.

What major lessons have you drawn regarding the provision of Overlay works?Detailed planning and the use of experienced and professional supply contractorswas the key to a venues success.

Die Tribne am Expo-See ... 1,5 Mio. ZuschauerGestalterisch und technisch konnte die temporr erstellte Tribneam Expo-See einer permanenten Anlage durchaus das Wasserreichen, um beim Thema zu bleiben. Die Baulinien der Stehplatz-tribne nahmen die Fluchten des Expo-Sees und der benachbartenBauten auf. Dezentes Grau und allseitige Verkleidungen prgten die Gesamterscheinung. Rangabtrennungen, so genannte Wellen-brecher und geschlossene Stufen, gewhrleisteten die Sicherheit.

The grandstand on the lake .. . 1.5 mio. spectatorsFor Expo in Hanover we carried out a project which, in terms of design and engineering, puts permanent buildings in the shade: thestructural design of the stand matched the lines of the Expo lake andthe neighbouring Hall 25. Sober grey and all-round cladding empha-sised the aesthetic effect. Separate tiers, so-called breakwaters and enclosed steps guaranteed safety.

Apart from that the figures speak for themselves: places for 9400people standing, 580 VIP boxes and a 100 metre long plat-form, 11 metres high for the equipment. More than 1.5 million spec-tators enjoyed the daily evening show Flamb made of fire and. . .water.

Stars aus der Szene der Snow-boarder, Skateboarder, Inlineskater undBMXer zeigten ihr Knnen auf Sportan-lagen, welche wir gemeinsam mit demVeranstalter entwickelt und gebaut haben.Spezielles Design fr einen ausserge-whnlichen Anlass.

Freestyle.ch 2000 pure adventure.Thanks to the fantastic weather and thespectacular programme of events, the largestFreestyle event in Europe attracted 100,000spectators to the Landiwiese in Zurich. Thenwhen the skateboarding legend Tony Hawkdemonstrated the first 900 (two and ahalf turns) on European soil, the fans reallywent wild. Stars from the scene of snow-boarding, skateboarding, inline skating andBMX showed off their skills using sportsinstallations which we had designed andconstructed in partnership with the organ-isers. A special design for an extraordinaryevent.

Wesentliche Teile des Themenparks Humankind an der Weltaus-stellung sind von Nssli geliefert worden. Als planungs- undarbeitsintensiv erwiesen sich die zahl-reichen Details, zu denen Gelnderkon-struktionen in Metall, Abschlsse ausGlas, Zementfaserplatten, Maschengitternund Trnenblechen, Holzverkleidungenund Ausstellungswnde gehrten. Einmalmehr, der Mensch im Mittelpunkt.

Key parts of the theme park Humankind at the World Exhibitionwere supplied by Nussli. The project included a gigantic ships sternmade of wood, which pierced through the existing roof of the hall,

and a multitude of steel cubes, arranged indi-vidually and piled on top of each other,incorporating lifts and stairs. The countlessdetails proved to be highly planning- andlabour-intensive, including as they did metalrailing structures, glass faces, cement fibreboards, mesh screens and studded plates,timber cladding and display walls. Onceagain, mankind was the focus.

Die Gsteliste sagt alles. Wer in derSchweizer Wirtschaft Rang und Namenhat, folgte der Einladung nach Winterthurund feierte mit. Fr den VIP-Event wurdenzwei fast 15 m hohe Rundbogenbhnenmit unserem modularen CD-Trgersystemzusammengebaut und dem Anlass ent-sprechend eingerichtet. Ein futuristischesZelt entstand. Gut 800 Gste konnten ingediegenem Ambiente verpflegt werdenund das Fest geniessen.

The guest list says it all. Anyone who is any-one in the Swiss world of business took upthe invitation to come to Winterthur, andjoin in the celebrations to mark the 125thanniversary of Winterthur Insurance. Twoalmost 15m high arched frameworks wereassembled for the VIP event, using our mod-ular CD Truss System, and these were erectedfor the occasion. This created a futuristic tent.Over 800 guests could be entertained in arefined setting, and enjoy the festivities.

Tennis am Rathausplatz in Wien.

Der Austragungsort wurde wohl mit Bedacht gewhlt: Das JVC La-dies Open, das Mitte September 2000 in Wien stattfand, dientenmlich der Vorbereitung und Etablierung eines WTA-Turniers frdie Jahre 2001 bis 2004. Und da kam der historische Rathausplatzals wrdiger Rahmen gerade recht ...

Genau fnf Tage standen uns zur Verfgung, um ihn zur welt-klassetauglichen Tennisarena um-zubauen sprich: eine Anlage mit4000 Sitzpltzen, 65 VIP-Logen, ei-ner Open-Air-Bhne fr Rahmenver-anstaltungen und Bauten fr tech-nische Infrastrukturen zu erstellen.Dazu kam die Unterkonstruktiondes Center Courts, die auf sehr un-ebenes Terrain zu stehen kam. Dashat die Sache zwar nicht einfachergemacht, liess sich aber genausobewltigen, wie spter der Abbau inknapp vier Tagen.

Tennis Event on the Town Hall Square.The venue was carefully chosen: the JVC Ladies Open, which tookplace in Vienna in mid-September 2000, served as preparation for the establishment of a WTA tournament for the years 2001 to 2004.And the historic Town Hall Square was just the right setting . . .

We had just 5 days to convert it into a world-class tennis arena,i.e. to build a structure with 4000 seats, 65 VIP boxes, an open-air

stage for fringe events and buildingsfor the technical infrastructure. In ad-dition came a sub-structure for theCentre Court, which was to be builton very uneven terrain.

That made the challenge evenbigger.

Top-Golfer, welche (buch-stblich) auf hchstem Niveau spielen, dies vor einerfaszinierenden Bergkulisse. Was fr die Golfprofis of-fensichtlich seinen Reiz hat, ist fr uns eine Heraus-forderung: Die topographischen Verhltnisse und dieschwierigen Zugnge geben uns jeweils Gelegenheit zuzeigen, wie anpassungsfhig unsere Bausysteme sind.Auf einem Gelnde mit grossen Niveau-Unterschiedenerstellen wir abgerundete Tribnenanlagen und TV-Tr-me verschiedenster Grssen und Hhen.

Dass wir dabei auf Nummer sicher gehen, verstehtsich von selbst.

Golf at the highest level. What makes the Canon European Masters in CransMontana, Switzerland unique is obvious. Top players paying at the best on a course with a fascinating scenicbackdrop. While this obviously has its attractions for thegolfers coming here, it poses a big challenge for us: the geo-graphical conditions and difficult access always give us thechance to show how adaptable our systems are. On a sitewith large differences in level, we set up round grandstandsand TV towers of all sizes and heights.

It goes without saying that safety is our number onepriority.

Kathedrale St. Gallen Champions League fr Gerst-bauer

Die historische Kathedrale steht stolz undmchtig im Zentrum St. Gallens, doch die Zeitgeht nicht spurlos vorbei. Fr die Steinhauer-arbeiten und die Helmsanierung musste einfunktionelles Gerst aufgebaut werden, ab-gestellt auf der Balustrade 35 m ber Grund,verankert mit Klebeanker rundherum. MittelsBaulift wurde das Material auf den Arbeits-steg zwischen den Trmen gehoben, dannbegann die Handarbeit bis auf 75m.

The historic cathedral stands there proud andmighty in the centre of St. Gallen, but time is notleaving it entirely unscathed. A purpose-builtscaffold had to be built for the masonry workand roof restoration, tailored to fit the balustrade35m above ground, secured with bonded boltsall around. A builders lift was used to hoistmaterials up to the working platform betweenthe towers, but then they had to be taken byhand up to 75m.

18,5 m Spannweite, ausgelegt auf Einzel-lasten von 28 Tonnen, dazu eine geringe Bo-denbelastbarkeit: Am Lehrgerst, das wir fr die Frauenklinik Bern gebaut haben, wardie Statik nicht die einzige Herausforderung.Nehmen wir das Problem Installations-platz: Dass er schlicht nicht existierte, war der Grund, warum wir Logis-tik und Baustellenorganisationpraktisch auf die Minute genaukoordinieren mussten.

18.5 metre span, designed for concentrated loadsof 28 tons on top a small loading capacity: the engineering of the scaffolding which we setup for the Frauenklinik Bern was not the onlychallenge.

Because there was limited access and nospace to manoeuvre, we had to co-ordinate

transport logistics and site orga-nisation precisely, almost to theminute. Our tried and testedprocedures were of great assistanceto achieve the set time frame.

Geplant: Die Gesamtsanierung derStahlbetonbrcke, die ber dieSBB-Geleise hinweg die Badener-mit der Seebahnstrasse verbindet.Gelst haben wir die Aufgabe miteinem besonderen Hngegerst,welches dem Bauunternehmen er-laubte, ohne Beeintrchtigung desBahnverkehrs zu arbeiten.

Ganze 10 cm Abstand zu denFahrleitungen, so nah wie noch nie.Um das Gerst gegen die Hochspan-nung (15 000 Volt) abzuschirmen,haben wir einen Isolationsunterbauin die Konstruktion integriert. Mon-tiert wurde in der Nacht, in Einst-zen von gut zwei Stunden, ohne denBahnbetrieb zu stren.

A scaffolding to solve several problems at thesame time

The project: the total renovation of asteel and concrete bridge which crossesthe SBB railway track to link theBadenerstrasse with the Seebahn-strasse in Zurich.

The solution: a suspended scaf-folding which allows the contractorsto work in the daytime without affect-ing the rail traffic. There was a dis-tance of 10 cm only to the aerial con-tact lines.

In order to make it at all pos-sible we incorporated an insulatedsub-frame in the construction, which protected the scaffolding against a15,000 volt high tension charge.

In order not to disrupt the railtraffic, it was assembled in 15 night-shifts lasting a good two hours.

ternehmer bauen, die temporren Infrastrukturen derArteplage Murten an der Expo.02.

In Murten entsteht EinzigartigesDie thematische Landesausstellung Expo.02 findet imSommer 2002 in Biel, Murten, Neuenburg und Yverdon-les-Bains statt. In Murten plant Jean Nouvel, die Alt-stadt, die Uferzone und den See in eine grossrumigeAusstellungslandschaft zu verwandeln. Nach der Exposollen alle Infrastrukturen wie Theater, Restaurants, Pa-villons und sogar die Gartenanlage mit Labyrinth wiederzurckgebaut werden.

Die Ikone in Murten, der MonolithIm See, zu erreichen nur mit einer meditativen ber-fahrt, steht die kubische Stahlkonstruktion als Symbolfr den gesetzten Spannungsbogen Augenblick undEwigkeit. Im Innern begegnen die Besucher/-innenzwei Momentaufnahmen der Schweiz: dem historischenPanorama der Schlacht von Murten und dem Pan-orama 2002, Bildern des noch jungen Jahrhunderts,von einem Computer gesteuert und verfremdet. Den Mo-nolithen zu bauen, verstehen wir deshalb nicht nur alsAuftrag: Er gibt uns die Chance, ein Zeichen zu setzen.

t has been designed by a team working under Jean Nou-vel, and Nussli Special Events St. Gallen Ltd will

build it as main contractor: the temporary infrastructures ofthe themepark called Arteplage Murten at the Expo.02.

Something unique is happening in Murten The national exhibition Expo.02 takes place in Summer2002 in Biel, Murten, Neuenburg and Yverdon-les-Bains.

In Murten, Jean Nouvel plans to transform the historicold town, the lake and the shore area into a massive exhibi-tion area. After the event all structures such as theatres, pavil-ions, restaurants and even the garden arrangement with amaze will be dismantled and the initial status restored.

Central in every sense: the Monolith Located in the lake, and reached only by a ferry crossing togive time for contemplation, as it were, a cubist steel con-struction is arising a symbol of the theme an instant andeternity. Inside, visitors encounter two snapshots ofSwitzerland: the historic Panorama of the Battle ofMurten a monumental mural and the Panorama 2002,displaying computerized images of the new century. There-fore, to build the Monolith is not just a job: it gives unsthe chance to make a mark.

work to do before it opens inJuly 2001. Our job is to designand build the central element ofthe set and the entire hydraulicsystem. What the latter is de-signed to move, must unfortu-nately remain a secret. But itwill be exciting . . .
