Alan Buckley Memorial Cic Fada

The 2nd Annual Alan Buckley Memorial Cic Fada was held on Sunday 26th January and despite some inclement weather conditions, a good crowd was in attendance with 15 teams taking part.

Some great and not so great examples of kicking was on display and all groups battled their way back to Kilmurry Village. Over €500 was raised for Cork Penny Dinners on the day and great fun

was had by all who participated.

Kilmurry players with Muskerry U21s

Muskerry U21’s commenced the season in the Duhallow Invi-tational U21 Championship seeking to retain the crown won last year. They defeated East Kerry in the opening game by

three points in a windswept Rathmore just prior to Christmas where a save by Jason McDonnell in the dying minutes kept

Muskerry ahead for victory. Clonakilty were their next opponents in the quarter final where Padraig Berhanu contributed 2-4, Muskerry were defeated by

the bare minimum on a scoreline of Clonakilty 2-10 Muskerry 2-09.

Storm Damage

Unfortunately, our facilities did not es-cape the brunt of the recent storms in February. The netting and support

poles behind the lower goal succumbed to the extreme wind. A lot of work will

be needed to repair the damage before the summer months.

Kilmurry Represented on Schools Teams

DLS Macroom

Congratulations to Daniel Cahalane, Joe Ryan, Marco Healy, Padraig Hin-

chion, Michael John Grainger and James Berhanu who were all involved in DLS Macroom’s campaign in the

Corn Ui Mhuiri this year where they made the final against Pobail Scoil Cor-

ca Dhubhine in Fitzgerald’s Stadium, Killarney. Unfortunately, the lads came up short on the day as the Gaeltacht

boys secured the crown for the third year in a row, beating DLS Macroom in

the final for the second time in three years.

Colaiste Choilm Ballincollig

Congratulations also to Sean Curzon on

his involvement with Colaiste Choilm in their Simcox cup success over DLS Macroom and also in their Corn an

Uachtaran victory over Hamilton High School, Bandon. They defeated Holy

Rosary College, Mountbellow in the semi final and overcame Scoil Aodain,

Glasnevinin the final played in Croke Park and also broadcast live on TG4.

current Cork County Senior Ladies Champions St. Vals.

Breige Corkery of St. Vals will also be the senior ladies captain for 2014.

Action with Muskerry

Congratulations to Kevin Barrett who was full back

for Muskerry seniors in championship action when

they defeated UCC.

Junior A Championship Fixture

Our Junior A side will begin their championship cam-

paign when they face Macroom on Saturday 10th

May in Annahalla at

7.30pm.

Best of Luck to all involved!

Kilmurry Junior A Team

Our Junior A team returned to action under the stewardship of Chris

Hannon in early February and faced near neighbours Canovee in the opening round of the Muskerry Cup competition played under lights

in Cloughduv. The game was hard fought with both sides keen for an early season victory. Faced with a strong Canovee side who are just returning to the Junior grade having spent the previous few

seasons competing at Intermediate level, our lads had to give way on a score-line of Kilmurry 2-6 Canovee 1-15.

Our Junior side began their league campaign against Blarney also under lights in Cloughduv and fared better on this occasion putting in a commanding display to comfortably take the league points on

offer. The final score of Kilmurry 0-15 Blarney 1-1 reflecting the dominance over the over. The league campaign continued when

they faced Ballincollig in Ballincollig and faced with a formidable Ballincollig outfit, our lads had to give way despite playing some

good football in difficult conditions. The second outing in the Divi-sion 1 league was met with defeat when facing a strong Ballincollig side. Played in poor weather conditions, Ballincollig won out on a

score-line of Ballincollig 3-6 Kilmurry 0-7. The third game in the Division 1 league saw Iveleary visit Kilmurry and they came away

with the spoils following a last minute penalty after a good hours football with the final score reading Kilmurry 0-10 Iveleary 1-9 Our Junior B team opened their league campaign with a win at

home to Naomh Aban in an entertaining hours football played in mild conditions in early April. The final score on this occasion was

Kilmurry 1-10 Naomh Aban 2-5. Our U21 saw commenced their campaign in early February, howev-er the inclement weather at the time saw a number of games can-

celled each weak. They played 2 games in the U21 league, losing out to Traoloch MacSuibhnes on their first outing then defeating

Aghinagh in their second game. The third fixture against Cill Na Martra was not played. In championship, we were graded in the B competition and were drawn to play Aghbullogue in Ovens. The

game was a fast open game of football played in perfect conditions. Kilmurry started well with Joe Ryan kicking some super points from

play and from frees. Sean O’Sullivan secured the opening major for Kilmurry in the first half following a great move involving Padraig Berhanu, Joe Ryan and Paudie O’Connell. Daniel Cahalane was in

superb form in defense curtailing Aghbullogue’s Cork U21 to points from frees. Padraig Berhanu secured Kilmurry’s second goal in the

second half however Aghbullogue ran out winners by the bare mini-mum on a scoreline of 2-13 to 2-12. Team: Jason McDonnell, Pa-draig Hinchion, Daniel Cahalane, Peter Kelleher, Luke McCarthy,

Marco Healy, Michael John Grainger, Jonathan Buckley, James Ber-hanu, Patrick Grainger, Padraig Berhanu, Sean Curzon, Sean O’Sul-

livan, Joe Ryan, Paudie O’Connell. Subs: Oisin McSwiney, James Dullea. The team was short a number of players due to long term injuries this year and all players involved in the championship game

versus Aghbullogue will be underage again next season as well hav-ing a number of players to return from injury can give optimism to

this group for 2015.

Did You Know?

Our U16 side are operating in the Premier 2 grade this

year. The Premier 2 Grade is run by the Central board of RebelOg whereas in gen-

eral our other underage sides would come under the

remit of the Eastern Section of RebelOg in the A & B

grades.

Kilmurry Underage Section

Underage The U 14 team took part in the Feile competition on Saturday March

22nd last. They faced Aghinagh, Boherboy and Kilnamartyra. The

opening game against Aghinagh was a close encounter and was to

be decisive in the overall outcome of the day. Kilmurry and Agh-

inagh scored 0-6 and 1-3 respectively resulting the game ending in

a draw. In the second game Kilmurry had a comprehensive victory

over Boherboy with the final score 5-6 to 1-0. The final game

against Kilnamartyra was also a good game for Kilmurry and ended

in their favour on a scoreline of 2-5 to 1-3. Kilmurry hoped they had

done enough to progress but unfortunately they found themselves

on the same points as Aghinagh who also had won two games in

addition to their draw against Kilmurry. With only one team pro-

gressing it all came down to points and Aghinagh had conceded less

than Kilmurry over the three games hence Aghinagh progressed.

Despite the disappointment Kilmurry can take solace in their excel-

lent performances over the day. The U15’s have played one game,

defeating Sliabh Rua in the Eastern League while the U16 side had

a good victory over Bantry in the Premier 2 league but were defeat-

ed by Eire Og. Kilmurry U12s had a good victory over Donoughmore

in the Rebel Og league played in Donoughmore. The wind proved to

be a decisive factor in what was very much a game of two halves.

The game ended 4-5 to 1-7.

Minor

Kilmurry minors have commenced their league campaign on a los-ing note following defeats to Glenville and Macroom respectively.

The team was short of a number of key players for both games and would hope to have all players available for their upcoming league

games. This group will take a break shortly to allow the players to focus on their upcoming exam obligations and recommence in June.

Easter Camp

Kilmurry GAA underage held an Easter Camp on Saturday 26th April in the Club grounds. Cork Senior Footballer Brian Hurley was

the guest player at Kilmurry Easter Camp. He spent a lot of time talking to players about the importance of attitude, diet and

stretching. He explained to players about his own attitude and de-termination to make it onto the Cork Senior panel. It helped them to realise that while talent is important the right attitude is vital as

well. In terms of diet he stressed the need to eat well and avoid the usual junk foods that young players may be attracted to. He said

healthy eating was a habit and the younger you started it the easi-er it was to get into it. Finally Brian talked about injuries and how stretching can help players to avoid unnecessary injury. He showed

player some new stretches and got them to practice before taking questions on a range of topics. Brian also spoke to younger players

and again stressed the need for practice and learning the basics properly. Before leaving Brian posed for photos and chatted to club members.

Our U6,8 & 12 teams have resumed training in preparation for up-coming games as part of the various RebelOg competitions. Good

numbers were present in all age groups with over 40 young players turning out for the U6 team.

Muskerry GAA Sports Star Awards

The new initiative aims to promote Muskerry GAA and highlight out-standing performances across all GAA activities. There will be a monthly winner chosen between March-October and an overall win-

ner selected at a special Gala Dinner in December. A Team of the Year will also be announced for Junior hurling and football at the

end of the year function. A committee has been set-up and is being chaired by Mr John Feeney from the Dripsey club. "Already there has been a terrific reaction to

the New Awards Ceremony and everyone is really excited by the idea. The Muskerry Division has so many talented sportspeople

across all our games and it is only right that we acknowledge their efforts," said Mr Feeney. The individual award winners can be chosen from Football, Hurling,

Camogie and Ladies Football. Nominations for each month will be brought forward by a number of media reporters who will closely

monitor the games. The monthly award winner will receive a person-alized invitation and can invite 10 family/ friends to attend a function at the Auld Triangle.

The Auld Triangle Bar and Restaurant has a long association with teams from the Muskerry Division and was only too delighted to get

involved according to proprietor Mr Michael O’Riordan. "The New Awards initiate is a fantastic idea and will be an outstanding suc-

cess. There are so many talented players from this division and we are really thrilled to be part of this initiative ," added Mr O’Riordan. The Muskerry division boasts a rich history in Gaelic Games with over

21 clubs. Players from the division have represented Cork at all levels including ladies Gaelic football. The new awards ceremony is sure to

create plenty of debates among the clubs while the selection of Teams-of -the-Year in both hurling and football will be eagerly antici-pated.

Sean Kiely was the inaugural winner of this award following his sterling per-

formances for Cork U21’s in their quest to retain Munster honours as well as

playing a key role in his club, Ballincollig retaining the Mid Cork U21 A Foot-
