בהקשר זה אינו artesאלו נחשבו לידע בסיסי והכרחי למי שרצה ללמוד את המדעים הגבוהים באותה תקופה: פילוסופיה ותיאולוגיה. פירוש המילה
אמנות במשמעותה המודרנית כי אם "מקצוע" או "עבודה". שמן, "האמנויות החופשיות", נובע מכך שרק לאנשים חופשיים היה מותר ללמוד אותן.

החל מסוף המאה השנייה לפני הספירה התפתחה ברחבי האימפריה הרומית מערכת בתי ספר מדורגת:

בו למדו דקדוק וספרות יוונית ורומית.12-16בית הספר לגרמאטיקה, לבני
שבו ביקרו רק בני המשפחות האמידות והמיוחסות ולמדו רטוריקה ומדעים הדרושים לנואם משכיל: גרמאטיקה )דקדוק(, 16-19בית הספר לרטוריקה, לבני
דיאלקטיקה )חוכמת הויכוח ותורת ההיגיון(, גיאומטריה, אסטרונומיה, ומוסיקה )תורת ההרמוניה(. כאן התגבשה תכנית "שבע האמנויות
ששורשן נעוץ בחינוך הסופיסטי והפילוסופי של יוון.Septem Artes Liberales ) או החכמות( החופשיות" זאת אומרת אלה הדרושות לבן חורין,
בתחילה היו בתי הספר בבעלות פרטית. רק מן המאה הראשונה לספירת הנוצרים ואילך תמכה בהם המדינה. תמיכה זו הביאה במאה השנייה ברומא ואחר כך
במרכזים אחרים להקמת מוסדות להשכלה גבוהה , מעין אוניברסיטאות , לפי דוגמת בתי המדרש ההלניסטיים.

הנצרות הקדומה הייתה תנועה עממית, שהציבה אידיאל של אמונה תמימה וחיי
צנע ופרישות מול הלמדנות והחריפות הרוחנית והעידון החומרי של העולם
ההלניסטי-רומי. היא לא פיתחה מוסדות לחינוך אינטלקטואלי, אלא טיפחה את
החינוך הדתי והמוסרי, בעיקר של מבוגרים המתכוננים לטבילה, כדי להקנות להם
את המסורת בדבר תולדות ישוע, מותו ותחייתו, הלכות מוסר, האמונות על אחרית
הימים וסדרי הפולחן. את חינוך הנוער השאירה הנצרות תחילה בידי בתי הספר
ההלניסטים והרומיים האליליים, תוך נכונות להתפשר עם התרבות ההלניסטית.
אבות הכנסייה במזרח ההלניסטי ביקשו דרכים להפיק תועלת מן העיון במדעים
החילוניים ובספרות האלילית, והתייחסו בחיוב ללימוד הפילוסופיה, הרטוריקה
והספרות היוונית. במערב הלטיני היו ממנהיגי הכנסייה, דוגמת טרטוליאנוס,
שהתנגדו לביקור נערים נוצרים בבתי ספר אליליים וללימוד הספרות האלילית.
אחרים, דוגמת הרונימוס ואוגוסטינוס, ביקשו לדלות מן התרבות האלילית את
היסודות שעשויים היו להתאים לנצרות ולשמש משען לאמונתה.

הספר הציבוריים לגרמטיקה ולרטוריקה,
שימשה הכנסייה הקתולית בלבד חוליה
מקשרת עם התרבות העתיקה. הכנסייה
נאלצה לשמור מינימום של הלימודים
העיוניים, שטופחו בבתי הספר הרומיים, כדי
להכשיר את כוהניה למילוי תפקידיהם. ידיעת
קריאה וכתיבה, הלשון הלטינית ודקדוקה,
רטוריקה ותורת ההיגיון, מוסיקה, ואף יסודות
המתמטיקה, הייתה דרושה לשם פירוש
כתבי-הקודש, ההטפה, ניהול הפולחן וכיוצא
בזה.

במשך מאות בשנים שמרה הכנסייה מונופולין על מוסדות הלימוד. הנזירים חוייבו )על פי תקנון בנדיקטוס הקדוש ( להקדיש לפחות שעתיים ביום לקריאה ולעיון. כך התפתח במנזרים הנוהג להעתיק כתבי-יד
ולקיים בתי ספר בשביל המועמדים לנזירות, שבהם לימדו על פי רוב לימודי-קודש בלבד. רק במנזרי אירלנד שגשג עד סוף המאה השמינית לימוד הספרות הרומית והיוונית העתיקה. ליד כנסיות רבות הוקם "
בית ספר לזימרה", שתפקידו היה להכשיר להשתתפות במקהלת הכנסייה, ובו לימדו זימרה, קריאה ולטינית. במרוצת הזמן התחיל למלא תפקיד של בית ספר יסודי. היורשים העיקריים של בתי הספר הרומיים
היו בתי הספר שליד קתדרלות , שהכשירו את הכמורה והורו, מלבד לימודי הקודש, גם את יסודות ההשכלה הכללית בשבע האמנויות החופשיות. אף בני האצולה, שלא התכוננו לכמורה,
למדו בהם לטינית, שהייתה לא רק שפת הכנסייה אלא גם שפת הדיפלומטיה, החקיקה
( תבעה שכל כנסייה ראשית תדאג ללימוד 1179והניהול. הוועידה הלטרנית השלישית )
חינם של בני העניים, אולם דרישה זו לא נתמלאה אלא במידה מצומצמת ביותר.
גם שליטים חילוניים עודדו לפעמים את הרחבת החינוך הפורמלי. בולט ביניהם קרל
הגדול, שביקש להעלות בממלכתו את רמת ההשכלה –בעיקר של הנזירים והכמרים,
אך אחר כך גם של ההדיוטות. הוא נעזר על ידי אלקואין* שניהל גם את בית הספר
שבארמון, שבו למדו בני המשפחה המלכותית ובני אצילים שהתכוננו למשרות רמות
במדינה ובכנסייה. תכנית הלימודים כללה ספרות, אריתמטיקה, אסטרונומיה ותיאולוגיה.

ואילך התרחב האופק הרוחני של משכילי אירופה, כשהמגע עם המוסלמים הביא 12מתחילת המאה ה-
לידיעתם את היצירה היוונית בתחומי המדע ואת הפילוסופיה של אריסטו. בסכולסטיקה הועלה לימוד
התיאולוגיה לרמה מדעית, ובהוראת "שבע האמנויות החופשיות" הועתק הדגש מן הדקדוק לדיאלקטיקה.
באותה התקופה נתחדש בדרום איטליה לימוד הרפואה מכתבי הרופאים היווניים והערביים, ובצפון איטליה
לימוד המשפט הרומי החילוני, שידיעתו עודדה גם את הגיבוש השיטתי של המשפט הכנסייתי. בעקבות
כלומר מוסדות לימוד studia generaliaהתפתחויות אלו קמו מוסדות לחינוך גבוה, שתחילה נקראו
פתוחים לתלמידים מכל המעמדות והארצות ואחר כך האוניברסיטאות. הללו התחילו להתפתח במאות
1500 בבולוניה וסאלרנו באיטליה, פאריס ומונפליה בצרפת, אוכספורד וקמבריג' באנגליה. עד 12/3ה-
אוניברסיטאות ברחבי אירופה. ההוראה אורגנה בארבע פקולטות: פקולטה לאמנויות 80היו קיימות כ-
)"החופשיות"( שימשה שלב הכנה לשלוש הפקולטות "המקצועיות" לתיאולוגיה, למשפטים ולרפואה.
טבעו בצרפת, שם ניתן התואר לתלמידים שסיימו את לימודי הטריוויום Baccalauréatאת התואר
)בוגר אוניברסיטה(, מונח המשמש Bachelor of arts באוניברסיטת פריז. מאוחר יותר הפך תואר זה ל-
עד היום כתואר ראשון במוסדות אקדמיים בישראל ובמדינות רבות אחרות.
