Nomenclature:

व्याकरणम्िवि + आा + कृ + करणे ल्युट्व्यािक्रियन्ते व्युत्पाद्यन्ते आथवर्थवित्तया प्रतितपाद्यन्ते शब्दा येन ।Vyakarana is that discipline (vedanga) by which meaningful Shabdas (words) are derived and analysed.

शब्दानुशासनम्शब्दः आनुिशष्यते आनेन आनु+शास-ल्युट्शब्दसाधुताज्ञापके व्याकरणे।

Instruction or discipline on correct usage of Shabda.

पदशास्त्रम् पदानां शास्त्रम्Science of words.

शब्दः The term शब्द has got many meanings, viz. महाविाक, आविान्तरविाक, विाक, पद, प्रतकृित, प्रतत्यय, विणर्थ etc.

महाविाकम् or Discourse is a group of आविान्तरविाक s (sub-sentences) विाकम् is a group of words (पद s) which can render a unitary

meaning.विाकं स्याद् यागे्यता-आाकांक्षा-आासि-यत्त-युक्तः पदाेच्चयः ।A sentence is a collection of words having याेग्यता (compatibility), आाकांक्षा (mutual expectancy) and आासि-यत्त (proximity).

पदम् is a conglomeration of प्रतकृित (root) and प्रतत्यय (suffix) प्रतकृितः is the root both verbal (धातुः) and nominal (प्रताितपिदकम्) प्रतत्ययः is the suffix विणर्थः minimum unit of speech which can be used independently

पािणनीयव्याकरणम् - आष्टाध्यायीThe Ashtadhyayi consists of about four thousand sutras arranged in

eight chapters (adhyaya) each consisting of four quarters (pada).

उपदेशः Upadeshaउपदेशः आाद्याचे्चारणम् । The original enunciation.

1. िशविसूत्रािण माहेश्वरसूत्रािणSet of fourteen sutras enumerating the speech sounds in the Sanskrit language in the order most conducive to forming the abbreviatory terms used in Ashtadhyayi.

2. धातुपाठःListing of verb roots (1970) arranged in ten classes.
