A NEW ERA OF EXCELLENCE: Th e Raiders enter the 2012 season un-der new leadership for the fi rst time in nearly fi ve decades. Owner Mark Davis named Reggie McKenzie the team’s General Manager on Jan. 10, making McKenzie the fi rst person to hold the GM title since Al Davis was named Head Coach and General Manager in 1963. McKenzie named Den-ver defensive coordinator Dennis Allen head coach on Jan. 30.

DENNIS ALLEN DEBUTS: Monday night’s game will mark the fi rst in a new era for the Oakland Raiders. Dennis Allen, the NFL’s youngest coach, will be at the helm for the fi rst time as head coach of the Raiders, and the Silver and Black will take the fi eld for the fi rst opener without owner Al Davis since 1962. Allen will be the third head coach in franchise history to face the Chargers in his head-coaching debut following Mike Shanahan (1988) and Mike White (1995), who both posted opening-game victories.

HOLY ROLLER: Th e season-opener falls on the 34th anniversary of one of most famous fi nishes in pro football history, “Th e Holy Roller.” On Sept. 10, 1978, the Raiders and Chargers were pitted in a back-and-forth battle in Week 2 NFL action. With 10 seconds left and Oakland down 20-14, Chargers LB Woodrow Lowe grabbed Raiders QB Ken Stabler’s throwing arm. Stabler somehow released the ball forward toward RB Pete Banaszak at about the 12-yard line, who pushed it forward to stumbling TE Dave Casper, who in-turn dribbled it the fi nal 4 yards over the goal line before falling on the fumble in the end zone with no time left . Th e ensuing extra point gave Oakland a 21-20 victory.

Below is the famous radio call by legendary voice of the Raiders Bill King:• “Th e crowd takes up a chant of DE-FENSE...Robiskie and Banaszak are

the backs, slot right, Branch inside. Bradshaw...Stabler back, here comes the rush, he side steps, can he throw? He can’t! Th e ball fl ips forward and is loose, there is a wild scramble. Two seconds left on the clock, Casper grabbing the ball. It is ruled a fumble, Casper has recovered in the end zone. Th e Oakland Raiders have scored on the most zany, unbelievable, absolutely impossible dream of a play. Madden is on the fi eld; he wants to know if it is real. Th ey said yes, get your big butt out of here. He does. Th ere is nothing real in the world anymore. Th e Raiders have won the football game. Th e Chargers are standing, looking at each other, they don’t believe it. Nobody believes it, I don’t know if the Raiders believe it, it’s not real. Fift y-two thousand people minus a few lonely Raiders fans

are stunned. A man would be a fool to ever have tried to write a drama and make you believe it. Th is one will be relived, forever!”

• Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Fouts, the Chargers’ quarterback in the “Holy Roller” game, will be calling Monday’s contest for Dial Global na-tional radio.

CALIFORNIA RIVALRY RENEWED: On Monday night, the Raiders and Chargers will renew the longest-standing, in-state pro football rivalry in California. Th e series dates back to the fl edgling days of the American Football League and began when the Chargers were based in Los Angeles and the Raiders were playing home games in San Francisco. Th e Chargers moved to San Diego in 1961 and the Raiders relocated to Los Angeles for 13 seasons from 1982-94, but the two franchises have met on the gridiron at least twice a year for 52 straight seasons, including the strike-shortened years of 1982 and 1987. Th e Silver and Black leads the all-time series against San Diego, 57-45-2, and won the lone postseason contest between the two with a 34-27 victory in the 1980 AFC Championship game. Includ-ing 14 preseason tilts, the Raiders and Chargers have met 119 times, with each game taking place within the Golden State.

SET FOR PRIME TIME: Th e Raiders are no strangers to the bright lights of Monday Night Football. Monday’s game will mark the third time in four seasons and the fi ft h time since 2006 that the Silver and Black have kicked off the season on Monday Night Football. Th e Raiders snapped a seven-game Monday Night Football losing skid with a 23-20 victory at Denver in last season’s opener, and last faced the Chargers to open a campaign in the 2009 regular-season opener at O.co Coliseum. Th e Raiders have compiled a 37-26-1 all-time record on MNF since defeating the Washington Red-skins, 34-20, on Oct. 19, 1970. Below is a list of the Raiders’ prime-time games since 2008.

Th e Raiders recorded 10 straight victories over the Chargers from 1972-77, that marks the sec-ond-longest series winning streak over an opponent in franchise history. Th at streak was actually part of a longer 17-game unbeaten stretch for the Raiders against the Chargers from 1968-77 that included two ties. More recently, the Chargers strung together 13 straight wins over the Raiders from 2003-09, the longest series losing streak in Silver and Black history. Th e Raiders snapped that streak with a 35-27 victory at O.co Coliseum in 2009, which started a three-game winning stretch for Oakland.

100-YARD RECEIVING COMBO: WRs Darrius Heyward-Bey (130) and Denarius Moore (101) each posted 100-yard receiving games in the Raiders’ 2011 season-fi nale loss to the Chargers. It marked the fi rst time since 2005 that two Raiders players have posted 100-yard receiving per-formances in the same game. WRs Randy Moss (116) and Doug Gabriel (100) accomplished the feat on Dec. 31, 2005, against the New York Giants.

2012 OAKLAND RAIDERS WEEKLY RELEASE4

DHB DEBUT: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey made his NFL debut the last time the Raiders and Chargers opened a season on Monday Night Foot-ball. Th e seventh-overall selection out of Maryland in the 2009 NFL Draft , Heyward-Bey lined up against the Chargers on Sept. 14, 2009, and along with fellow rookie Louis Murphy became part of the fi rst rookie receiver duo to start an NFL game since 2000, and just the third since 1977.

417 GOOD FOR THIRD: QB Carson Palmer passed for 417 yards in the 2011 season fi nale against the Chargers. Th e passing total ranks as the third-highest in franchise history behind Jeff Hostetler’s 424 yards against the Chargers on Oct. 31, 1993, and Cotton Davidson’s 419 yards against Denver on Oct. 24, 1961. It marked the fourth time in Palmer’s career that he has surpassed 400 yards and his second-highest single game total (440, Nov. 12, 2006 vs. StL).

DENARIUS vs. SAN DIEGO: WR Denarius Moore posted two of his top performances as a rookie against the Chargers last year. Moore caught fi ve passes for 123 with two touchdowns in the Raiders’ Th ursday night vic-tory on Nov. 10. Among his fi ve catches was a fi ngertip grab that sent him tumbling head over heels into fi eld-goal range. In the season fi nale at O.co Coliseum, Moore totaled 101 yards on just three catches, including a 78-yard grab that helped set up a fi eld goal.

CENTER OF ATTENTION: Th e Raiders will start either Stefen Wis-niewski or Alex Parsons at center Monday night. Wisniewski, who missed most of the preseason with a calf injury, is closer to the fi eld but his status for Monday is uncertain. Parsons is an impressive undraft ed player from USC that would be making his NFL debut, if Wisniewski can’t go. Regard-less of who starts, the player will be the Raiders’ sixth player to start a sea-son at center in six seasons. Th at’s signifi cant because over the franchise’s fi rst 44 years (1960-2003), only four centers accumulated the vast majority of the starts: Hall of Famer Jim Otto (1960-74), three-time Super Bowl champion Dave Dalby (1975-84), and Pro Bowlers Don Mosebar (1985-94) and Barret Robbins (1996-2003). Th e Raiders’ six starting centers since 2007: Parsons or Wisniewski (2012), Samson Satele (2011), Jared Veldheer (2010), Chris Morris (2009), Jake Grove (2008), Jeremy Newberry (2007). Grove (2005-06) was the last player to start consecutive Raiders season openers at center.

ROOKIES IN THE WINGS: Seven rookies are on the Raiders’ 53-man ac-tive roster, including fi ve 2012 draft picks (Tony Bergstrom, Miles Burris, Jack Crawford, Juron Criner and Christo Bilukidi), and two non-draft ed free agents (Lucas Nix and Rod Streater). Only 16 rookies have started season openers for the Silver and Black since the team returned to Oakland in 1995, but the Raiders have fi elded an opening-day lineup that included at least one rookie in each of the past three seasons. • Rookie WR Juron Criner racked up 146 yards on just four receptions in the preseason, with the majority of those yards coming in the Week 3 victory over the Lions. Th e Raiders’ fi ft h-round draft pick totaled 115 yards on just two catches in that contest, with touchdown receptions of 39 and 76 yards. He was one of only 10 NFL players to post a 100-yard receiving performance during the 2012 preseason.

• RB Darren McFadden suited up but did not play in the preseason fi nale at Seattle, concluding the preseason with 20 carries for 81 yards and one touchdown. He had a 22-yard run at Arizona in preseason Week 2 ac-tion and added four receptions for 48 yards in three preseason games. His touchdown came on a 1-yard score in the Raiders’ preseason Week 3 victory over the Lions.

• P Shane Lechler returned from a knee injury to punt in the Raiders’ fi nal two preseason contests, punting 12 times for 575 yards. He averaged 47.9 yards per punt and compiled a 43.7 net average, which ranked third in the NFL in the preseason. He booted a 50-yard punt in preseason Week 3 action against the Lions and punted a 59-yarder in the preseason fi nale at Seattle.

• Th e Raider defense was solid during the 2012 preseason, ranking fourth in the NFL in total defense. Th e Silver and Black allowed just 259.8 total yards per contest in the preseason.

• Seven players recorded sacks for the Raiders in the preseason. DT Tom-my Kelly led the team with two sacks and six other players registered single sacks for a team total of eight.

Against the Li-ons on Aug. 25, Johnson was targeted by Detroit quarterbacks fi ve times but had only one 7-yard catch. At Baltimore the previous week, Johnson hauled in fi ve passes for 111 yards with a touchdown.

DT Christo Bilukidi registered an interception on a tipped pass to seal the Raiders’ victory over the Lions in Week 3.

• Oakland’s 31 points against the Lions on Aug. 25 were the most points scored in a preseason game by the Raiders since a 32-17 victory at Chi-cago on Aug. 21, 2010.

• QB Terrelle Pryor was excellent aft er entering the contest in the third quarter against the Lions on Aug. 25. He totaled 137 yards and two touchdowns on just three completions, posting a quarterback rating of 143.8 and rushing for 90 yards on fi ve carries, including a 59-yard run. He also recorded a 17-yard rush for a touchdown.

• Th e Raiders’ off ense racked up 513 total yards, posting 318 yards through the air and 198 on the ground against the Lions on Aug. 25. Th e Silver and Black limited Detroit to 281 total yards, including just 65 yards on the ground.

• TE Brandon Myers saw his only action of the preseason against the Li-ons in Week 3 action. Myers made the start at tight end and tied for the team lead with fi ve receptions for 41 yards, including a 13-yard catch from QB Carson Palmer. Myers’ career high for catches in a regular-season game is three, which he’s posted on three occasions.

• QB Carson Palmer and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey hooked up for a spec-tacular one-armed 41-yard completion against the Lions, helping set up RB Darren McFadden’s 1-yard touchdown run. Palmer and Heyward-Bey teamed up for completions of 40 yards or more twice last season, a 43-yard touchdown against Detroit on Dec. 18 and a 53-yarder at Kan-sas City on Dec. 24 that set up the game-winning fi eld goal in overtime.

• K Sebastian Janikowski was 3-for-5 on fi eld goal attempts in the pre-season, including 1-for-2 on attempts longer than 40 yards.

HEAD COACH DENNIS ALLEN POSTGAME EXCERPT:On being tough and disciplined as a football team: “Th ere’s been prog-ress in that regard. Obviously, we haven’t been perfect and we’re not going to be perfect, but we’ve made a lot of progress in that regard. I think we are a tough football team. I think we do have tough-minded people. I think we’ve played smart in situations. We’ve executed some situational football really well. And then I do think some of that discipline is showing up on the fi eld. It’s still not the fi nal product that we’re looking for. We’re always going to strive for improvement and we’re looking for perfection, but I have seen improvement in that regard.”

2012 OAKLAND RAIDERS WEEKLY RELEASE6

NEW ERA, NEW IDEAS: John Maynard Keynes, a leading London econ-omist, once said that diffi culty lies not so much in developing new ideas as in escaping from old ones. Th at’s where the Raiders organization, includ-ing new General Manager Reggie McKenzie and new Head Coach Dennis Allen, fi nds itself as the team launches a new commitment to excellence.• “I think the biggest challenge is that because the leadership has been the

way it’s been done for so long, people are used to doing things one way,” Allen said during the off season. “I think the biggest challenge is just get-ting people within the organization to open up the thought process to doing things another way. Th ere are diff erent ways to do things in this league. I think everyone within the organization has been open and re-ceptive to conforming to the way Reggie and I are trying to do things.”

A HISTORIC YEAR: Th e year 1963 was a pivotal year in the United States, most notably due to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It also marked an important year for the Raiders. Th at season, the team’s partners named San Diego Chargers assistant Al Davis the Raiders’ new General Manager and Head Coach. Davis, who promptly changed the team’s colors to silver and black, went to work building what would become the league’s winningest franchise over the next four decades. Meanwhile, in Tennessee, Reggie McKenzie, the only other individual in Raiders history to hold the title of General Manager, was born. Davis draft ed McKenzie in 1985, and one of the last times Davis spoke to McKenzie, the owner told the fl edgling GM, “You can come home anytime you want.”• McKenzie returned home in January, when Mark Davis made McKenzie

the fi rst individual in Raiders history to hold the title of General Man-ager since Davis in 1963.

• “It’s an immense amount of pressure,” McKenzie said to ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson. “But I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I really feel like I belong here, going back to where it began.”

TOUGH, SMART, DISCIPLINED FOOTBALL TEAM: Th at’s the iden-tity Dennis Allen wants for the Raiders, something he announced his fi rst day on the job. In the words of Albert Einstein, Allen explained that the most penalized team in NFL history had to undergo a major change, espe-cially with regard to disciplined thinking.• “Well, we have to,” Allen said. “Th e defi nition of insanity’s doing the same

thing over and over again and expecting a diff erent result. So we’ve got to do something diff erent. We’ve got to change, and if we don’t change we’ll see the same results. So that’s the message that we’ve preached, and we’re going to continue preaching that till the end of the season.”

• Practices now are run in no-nonsense, high-tempo fashion, the hardest practices Tommy Kelly says he’s had since joining the Raiders in 2004. And even before their fi rst training-camp practice, players noted big dif-ferences, especially with regard to arriving at meetings on time.

• “Th ey’re real strict on discipline now as far as showing up to meetings,” SS Tyvon Branch told CBS.com. “Th ey’re even making us check in for lunches and dinners now.”

• Defensive tackle Tommy Kelly said he’s had to work harder “by farrrrrrr” in practice under Allen than any of his previous coaches in Oakland.

• “To win in the National Football League you’ve got to learn how to not beat yourself,” Allen said. “Th at’s one of the things that causes you to lose football games. It’s my job to get them to understand that, and then, at the end of the day, it’s the players’ jobs to make sure they get it corrected.”

GRUDEN IMPRESSED BY RAIDERS: Former Oakland coach Jon Gruden, who returned to Raiders camp in August to call the preseason opener for ESPN, had some nice things to say about the new Raiders, and

the old ones, such as Pro Bowl specialists Sebastian Janikowski and Shane Lechler.• “I liked the place-kicker and I liked the punter,” he told the Oakland

Tribune. “Let’s start right there. Th ose are two decisions that Al Davis made that will go down in history as two of the greatest decisions in the history of the organization. It was really neat seeing those guys, man. It was like I’d never left . But I can’t tell you how impressed I was with the type of practice Dennis Allen ran. A really sharp, young, energetic coach. I think he’s done a nice job assembling his staff . Coach (Jason) Tarver on defense impressed us, as did Greg Knapp, who has a history of making fi rst downs and moving the ball in this league. Th at was really impres-sive. But what really stands out is the speed. I know the Raiders have been known for it -- we had James Jett, Terry McDaniel on the practice fi eld here, but when you look at Darrius Heyward-Bey, Jacoby Ford, De-narius Moore, Taiwan Jones and Darren McFadden, Usain Bolt better watch out because they’ve got some speed here.

• Gruden said on several occasions as the Bucs’ head coach, he tried to hire Dennis Allen. Allen learned under Hall of Famer Emmitt Th omas in Atlanta, and Th omas and Gruden are close.

• “Emmitt Th omas recommended Dennis highly,” Gruden said. “I just couldn’t get the Falcons to release him to me. So I’ve known Dennis for a long time. I spent a lot of time the last few years at the Saints train-ing camp, watched him coach. John Fox is a very good friend of mine in Denver and everybody tells you the same thing about Dennis Allen -- he’s sharp, he’s a leader, he’s going to do a good job. Th ey’ve just got to continue to build this team. Th ey’ve got to work through some sal-ary cap issues, they’ve got to overcome the lack of draft choices and all those things that have been well-documented, but I think if they stay the course they’ve got the right man.”

• Gruden also knows Reggie McKenzie, who worked with the former as-sistant coach in Green Bay, and knows his twin brother, now a Raiders scout, even more.

• “I’ve known Reggie and Raleigh forever. I coached Raleigh McKenzie when I was the off ensive coordinator with the Eagles from 1995 to ‘97. He was our center and one of my favorite players I ever had a chance to coach. I knew Reggie when he came to Green Bay in 1994. We were together for one year. It started for me at Tennessee as a graduate coach, and that’s where a lot of blood in this Raider organization comes from. Raleigh McKenzie, Reggie McKenzie, Larry Marmie, Joey Clinkscales. Th e Volunteer Nation is very proud of these Oakland Raiders.”

• And Gruden understands the gravity of this season, with regard to the history of the organization. “I think it’s going to be tough. It’s going to be really tough. It’s really diffi cult to think about the New York Yankees without George Steinbrenner. It’s tough to think about the Boston Celtics without Red Auerbach. Al Davis put the Oakland Raiders on the map, and his legacy will never be forgotten. Hopefully Dennis Allen and Mark Davis and Reggie McKenzie can put their own spin on things and blaze a trail much like Al Davis did.”

GLOBAL PRESENCE: Th e Raiders draft ed a pair of defensive linemen with interesting international backgrounds. Neither played much football in high school.• Jack Crawford grew up in London, and still loves football – soccer, that

is. He didn’t play the American game of football until his junior year of high school. Aft er moving to the U.S. to attend St. Augustine High School in Longport, N.J., his sport as a freshman and sophomore was basketball.

• “I didn’t really make any friends quickly and all I could do was just prac-tice basketball, and over here I saw an opportunity to really get better,”

Crawford said. “Not having any friends and really no distractions helped. I carried that on to football when I started playing my junior year, and when I saw the success I had and I got off ered the scholarship at Penn State then everything becomes more realistic. Now it’s just a work-ethic thing. I don’t even think about the end goal; I just think about every day getting better.”

• Meanwhile, Christo Bilukidi, like Crawford a Day 3 selection, became the fi rst player ever draft ed out of Georgia State, where he signed af-ter one year of high-school football in Ottawa, Canada. A four-year let-terman in basketball, Bilukidi (bill-oo-KEE-dee) was born in Angola, where his father serves as a diplomat. He also has lived in France and Brazil, and speaks fl uent French. Janikowski, who kicked a 61-yard fi eld goal at Cleveland in 2009, now owns two of the fi ve longest fi eld goals in NFL history.

McFADDEN LIVING IN THE NOW: Darren McFadden has grown tired of the countless injury questions he’s received since returning at full strength for the team’s voluntary veteran mini-camp in April. Th at’s be-cause he’s moved on from 2011. He knows he can’t change his past and doesn’t waste any brain cells on speculating what could’ve happened had he stayed healthy last year.• “I think about it sometimes, but at the same time I try not to think about

it,” McFadden told Sports Illustrated. “People will say, ‘If you would have stayed healthy for 16 games you could have done this, you could have done that.’ Me, I’ve always been the type of guy that takes it one game at a time. I know the numbers could be amazing, but I don’t look to the future. I focus on the next game. Right now I don’t even know who we play Week 2. I just know our fi rst game is against the Chargers in the Monday night opener.”

• Th is season, McFadden is reunited with off ensive coordinator Greg Knapp, who coached the back during his rookie season in 2008, during Knapp’s fi rst stop with the Raiders. Knapp says McFadden’s biggest im-provement from then to now is his pass protection.

• Th e NFL’s fourth overall pick in the 2008 draft , McFadden again this off season worked out at Michael Johnson Performance in McKinney, Texas. Th ere, as in the NFL, his reputation for hard work and dedica-tion is outstanding. And don’t expect last year’s injury, or the team’s new zone-blocking scheme to aff ect his approach, because he now knows what he can do in this league.

• “I feel like once you’re playing with confi dence,” he said, “you can go out there and run the ball in any off ense. I don’t feel what we’re doing this year, going from a power scheme to a zone-blocking scheme, is going to make any diff erence. For the most part that was our off ense in college, one cut and go.”

STREATER MAKING AN IMPRESSION: Rod Streater was one of the primary players Oakland targeted in the critical minutes following the end of the 2012 NFL Draft . As NFL teams engaged in a feeding frenzy for avail-able undraft ed talent, Oakland’s interest in Streater was mutual.• Streater, whose agent has taught him jiu-jitsu in an eff ort to battle cor-

nerbacks at the line of scrimmage, got phone calls from several teams entering the draft , but never heard his name called. He wasn’t disap-pointed, though, because he had just 19 catches for 401 yards as a senior in Temple’s run-oriented off ense and knew he didn’t have a lot of fi lm in NFL scouting offi ces. When he learned that the Raiders had already called several of his former coaches, he knew their interest in him was legitimate.

• “Aft er the draft was over, I just wanted a place to go, a place to play,” Streater told the Sacramento Bee. “Th is is an opportunity to make it this far, so I felt like if I could just get here, I could make an impact.”

• Th at impact on the Raiders, along with the play of some of Oakland’s other young receivers, allowed the team to trade Louis Murphy to Caro-lina for a future draft choice. He earned fi rst-team reps in mini-camp in June and parlayed that into starting jobs in the fi nal two preseason games.

KELLY’S LATE SACKS = WINS: DT Tommy Kelly posted 7 1/2 sacks last season to lead the team. Of his sack total, 5 1/2 of those came in the fourth quarter and the Raiders went 5-1 in those games. • 09/11/11 at Den. (K.Orton) - W, 23-20• 09/25/11 vs. NYJ (M.Sanchez) - W, 34-24 (shared w/ Jarvis Moss)• 10/09/11 at Hou. (M.Schaub) - W, 25-20• 11/10/11 at SD (P.Rivers) - W, 24-17

• 11/20/11 at Min. (C.Ponder) - W, 27-21• 12/18/11 vs. Det. (M.Staff ord) - L, 28-27

DHB TAKES THE LEAD: Although he is only entering his fourth NFL season, WR Darrius Heyward-Bey is already an elder statesman among the Raiders extremely young receiving corps. At 25 years old, Heyward-Bey is the oldest of a group of receivers that average just over 23 years of age.• “Anytime the younger players come up to me and ask me a question I am

there to help,” Heyward-Bey told FoxSports.com. “I am trying to win the AFC West, and I am trying to win championships here. So if any of the younger guys want any advice I am out there to give it to them. It helps me out and keeps me on my toes and makes me want to do better.”

• Heyward-Bey entered the league as the Raiders top selection (seventh overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft , but struggled in his fi rst pro season, producing just nine receptions for 124 yards and one touchdown in 11 games. He changed his jersey number from 12 to 85 following his rookie season and showed steady improvement until breaking out last year with 64 catches for 975 yards and four touchdowns.

• Heyward-Bey became an instant starter upon joining the Silver and Black in 2009. He has seen action in 41 games with 38 starts over three professional seasons, marking the most starts for a Raiders wide receiver over the player’s fi rst three years in franchise history.

• Th is season, Heyward-Bey looks to continue his ascent as leader of a group of talented Raider receivers. He enters the year with 99 career catches for 1,464 yards and six touchdowns, and although it would ap-pear that the fourth-year veteran would be the Raiders’ top target, he knows that he can be just as valuable to the team by assisting with the development of this teammates.

• “I think every receiver tells himself, ‘I want to be that guy that gets this fi rst down or makes that play,” he said. “I think if we all had that mindset and we play together, we can do it by committee. Th ere is always going to be that guy that has more catches than the others. But if we do it and work as a team, the sky is the limit.”

MR. VERSATILITY: Raiders FB Marcel Reece can do a little bit of ev-erything on the football fi eld, including running, receiving, blocking and even tackling. Since signing with the Raiders as a non-draft ed free agent in 2008, Reece has played in 30 games with 19 starts over two-plus seasons on the Raiders’ active roster.• A wide receiver in college at the University of Washington, Reece hauled

in 48 passes in two seasons as a Husky. He set a program record with a 98-yard touchdown reception as a senior.

• Last year, Reece played in only 12 games with six starts due to an ankle injury. Despite the limited playing time, he managed to set a career high with 27 receptions for 301 yards and two touchdowns.

• Reece made an impression on Raiders head coach Dennis Allen, Den-ver’s former defensive coordinator, when the Silver and Black hosted the Broncos on Nov. 6. Reece caught three passes against Allen’s defensive unit, including a 40-yard touchdown reception.

• “I have been impressed with Marcel Reece,” Dennis Allen told the San Francisco Chronicle as training camp opened. “He is an exceptional ath-lete.”

• In a breakout 2010 campaign, Reece totaled 25 catches for 331 yards and three touchdowns. His big-play ability was on display throughout the season, including a 73-yard touchdown catch against the Broncos.

2012 OAKLAND RAIDERS WEEKLY RELEASE11

When Dennis Allen became the 18th head coach in Raiders history on Jan. 30, 2012, he prom-ised to fi eld a tough, smart, disciplined and com-mitted football team, noting that organizations win games in the National Football League by more than talent alone.

Allen, 39, is the NFL’s youngest head coach, more than six months younger than the league’s previously youngest coach, Pittsburgh’s Mike Tom-lin.

With 16 years of combined coaching experience at the college and professional levels, Allen enters his 11th NFL season. On six occasions during his 10 years as an NFL assistant, his team earned a playoff berth: 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011. And four of those trips came aft er division championships: Th e NFC South with Atlanta in 2004 and New Orleans in both 2006 and 2009, and the AFC West with Denver in 2011.

His résumé also includes football’s ultimate prize, a Super Bowl XLIV ring he earned by helping the Saints beat season MVP Peyton Manning, who threw for more than 4,500 yards with 33 touchdowns, and the India-napolis Colts to conclude the 2009 campaign.

Th e NFL’s second-youngest defensive coordinator when the Broncos hired him in 2011, he coordinated a defense that helped Denver parlay an AFC West crown into a Wild Card win and a date in the Divisional round. During his only year in Denver, despite starting three rookies most of the season, the Broncos improved 12 spots over 2010 in overall defen-sive ranking (from 32nd to 20th) and bettered their points allowed by eight spots (from 32nd to 24th).

Among four Pro Bowlers on Allen’s defense, Von Miller thrived. A Pro Bowl starter and the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year, he tied the team’s rookie record with 11½ sacks. Elvis Dumervil also fl ourished under Allen, rebounding from injury to register 9½ sacks. In fact, the Broncos’ 41 sacks as a team were their most since 2000.

Prior to joining the Broncos, Allen was an assistant coach for fi ve sea-sons with New Orleans, fi rst as assistant defensive line coach (2006-07), then as defensive backs coach (2008-10).

Under Allen’s direction in 2010, the Saints’ secondary allowed an NFL-low 13 touchdown passes while ranking fourth in the NFL in net passing yards per game (193.9).

In 2009, Allen tutored a secondary that played a key role in helping the Saints to their fi rst Super Bowl victory. His unit accounted for an NFL-high six interception returns for touchdowns and totaled 22 picks en route to their championship. One of his pupils, cornerback Tracy Porter, sealed the Saints’ 31-17 win over Indianapolis by returning a Manning interception 74 yards for a touchdown late in the game.

He also helped revitalize the career of safety Darren Sharper, who in 2009 tied for the NFL lead with nine interceptions. Sharper joined safety Roman Harper in forming the fi rst pair of defensive backs in franchise his-tory to make the Pro Bowl in the same season.

In 2008, his fi rst year as secondary coach, Allen helped the Saints over-come season-ending injuries to both starting cornerbacks and contributed to a defense that held fi ve opponents under 200 yards passing.

Allen assisted in tutoring the Saints’ defensive line from 2006-07, help-ing defensive end Will Smith become a Pro Bowler in 2006 aft er posting 10½ sacks and forcing three fumbles.

He originally entered the NFL coaching ranks with Atlanta in 2002,

spending four seasons with the Falcons as a defensive assistant. During his stint in Atlanta, the Falcons qualifi ed for the playoff s twice—as a wild card in 2002 and as NFC South champs in 2004—and played in the NFC Championship in 2004.

Allen spent his fi rst two years with Atlanta working primarily with the defensive backs. In 2002, he aided that unit in improving from No. 30 against the pass to 16th, while tying for third in the NFL with 24 intercep-tions.

In his fi nal two campaigns in Atlanta, Allen assisted in coaching a de-fensive line that produced Pro Bowlers Patrick Kearney (2004) and Rod Coleman (2005). In 2004, the line helped the Falcons total 48 sacks to lead the NFL for the fi rst time in team history.

Allen kicked off his football coaching career in 1996 as a graduate as-sistant at his alma mater, Texas A&M, where he was a four-year letterman as a safety. He worked with Aggies defensive backs for four seasons before coaching the secondary at the University of Tulsa from 2000-01.

A highly recruited defensive back at L. D. Bell High School in Hurst, Texas, before following his father, Grady Allen, to Texas A&M, Dennis went on to start the fi nal 21 games of his career on the top-rated Texas A&M “Wrecking Crew” defense.

Th e Atlanta native was signed by Buff alo as an undraft ed college free agent in 1996 and spent training camp with the Bills. His father, Grady, played in the NFL as a linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons from 1968-72.

Allen and his wife, Alisson, have a son, Garrison, and a daughter, Layla.
