Advising and Registration• During the academic year, all students are assigned to a Fundamentals of

Engineering faculty advisor.

• Students are encouraged to see their advisor often, but are required to see

them at least once per semester.

• Advising meetings are a time for students to share academic, career, and

personal goals with their advisor.

• Registration is focused on adding courses to a student’s fall schedule.

Academic Integrity• Engineers are professionals with a responsibility to society

• Students are expected to maintain high academic integrity in all situations

• Academic Integrity is the responsibility of students, faculty, and staff

• Academic dishonesty tarnishes ALL degrees from WVU and the Statler College

• The Fundamentals of Engineering Program takes dishonesty very seriously

Typically:

First offense is a “0” on the assignment

Second offense is an “F” in the course

The punishment may vary due to the nature of the situation

Should the case be extreme or multiple offenses exist, students can receive

an “Unforgiveable F” - permanent on academic transcript

Academic Performance• D/F Repeat Policy – If a student finds that during their first 60 credit hours

that a course grade is less than desirable (D or F), the student can “D/F

repeat” that course. The course must be repeated within WVU, and once

the repeat occurs, the latest grade is used in GPA calculations. The

original grade is not deleted from a student’s permanent record.

• If you intend to repeat a course you have earned credit for through AP, you are

strongly encouraged to discuss this with an academic advisor.

• More information in College Knowledge, page 16

Academic Planning – Success Rates

• MATH 153 & MATH 155 success rates based on ACT/SAT math scores

(Fall 2016 semester)

Course ACT Score to Place Into Old SAT Score to Place Into Pass Rate for ACT Scores 27-28 Pass Rate for SAT Scores 600-660

MATH 153 27 600 76% 81%

Course ACT Score to Place Into Old SAT Score to Place Into Pass Rate for ACT Scores 28 Pass Rate for SAT Scores 630 - 660

MATH 155 28 630 60% 61%

Pass Rate for ACT Score 29 - 36 Pass Rate for SAT Scores 670 - 800

79% 71%• Fall 2016 data points to the suggestion

that students are more likely to succeed in

MATH 153 if they did not score a 29+ on

the ACT or 670+ on the SAT.

What About Previous Course Work or Credits?

• For previous courses – be sure to tell your advisor about transfer credits that

appear on your transcript. He/she will then recommend courses based on

previously earned credit.

• For AP credit (scores listed) – any AP scores that have been sent to WVU

should be listed on a student transcript and will be treated the same as previous

course work.

• For AP credit (scores not listed) – for AP categories that are not math, advisors

will assume the student passed the AP exam and will not schedule a student for

the equivalent course; for AP math exams, advisors will only place students in

the appropriate math course based on SAT/ACT/ALEKS/Previous coursework

Academic Planning• Math – Challenging the Placement

• ALEKS Placement Exam offered TODAY at 12:00pm.

• ALEKS is a computerized assessment that lasts approximately 1 hour.

• The SAT and/or the ACT are the best indicators of success in math courses.

• You MUST take the ALEKS today if your math ACT is below 24 or math

SAT (post-March 2016) is below 580 or you scored below 50 on earlier

attempts at ALEKS for placement into chemistry.

• ALEKS is recommended for students that took the SAT/ACT during their junior

year of high school, and then took advanced math during their senior year.

Registration• Course Registration – What to Expect

• All students will meet with an advisor

• Advisors will work with students to learn more about previous course history,

goals, and special circumstances.

• Advisors will sign off on the decided schedule, and students will then work with

experienced Statler students to register for courses.

• Before students leave, an advisor will verify all courses were appropriately

scheduled.

Registration• Course Registration – What to Expect

• While students build their fall schedules, parents will attend First-Year Seminar for

Families

• This is a time for students to meet engineering tutors, learn how to use our

scheduling system, talk openly with an academic advisor, and engage with their

peers.

• Students should leave this session with a feeling of accomplishment and confidence

*They can, and are enabled to, be successful as a Statler College student.

• Once you see your student’s schedule, you are welcome to stop back in to discuss

any questions or concerns.

FERPA and What to Expect• Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

• Advisors want to help students, and parents, understand the

collegiate experience, however, once students begin classes

within the University, FERPA guidelines apply.

• Students can grant parents access to student records through the

Parent-Guest Portal:

parent-guest.portal.wvu.edu

• Once classes have begun, advisors will require that parents give the

FERPA passphrase before discussing any personal student records.
