HELLO

Choices… School? Sixth Form? College? Work? It’s a tough decision. This guide is our way of helping you to decide if our college is right for you.

You may be pleased to learn that it isn’t a traditional prospectus packed with small print. We’re different. And we appreciate that you’re smart enough to make up your own mind. That’s part of what makes college different from school. We offer a fresh start for independent minds. So, whoever you are, whatever your background, wherever you’re planning to go, you’re welcome here and we’ll work with you to help you achieve your goals – but enough about us. This is about you…

…And if you decide that you want to get work-ready and you like the idea of studying in a professional setting with inspiring staff, we could be just what you’re looking for. It’s not all work either – just imagine hanging out with new friends in our on-site Costa, or enjoying one of Andy’s legendary BBQs in sunny College Square. So, we hope you enjoy this guide. We think it says a lot about us and what we believe in.

If you like what you see, come back and see us at one of our Open Events for a chat and to find out more. If you already have a subject area in mind, find out more about the study programmes available and the entry requirements by visiting our website.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

WEYMOUTH COLLEGE IN THE NEWS!We’ve had an exciting year with lots of things happening across the campus. This year we’ve been awarded not one, but two Beacon Awards, our HIX Academy have won a sustainability award, we’ve improved our facilities and now have a College Square with a performance space plus much, much more. Below we’ve selected some of the highlights. To see all of our latest news visit www.weymouth.ac.uk/news

Staff and students celebrate winning two coveted “Further Education Oscars” (February 2015)

Staff and students celebrated as Weymouth College won two prestigious Association of

Colleges (AoC) Beacon Awards; one for Careers Education and Guidance and the other for Sport in the Curriculum. The awards, sponsored by UCAS Progress and VTCT, respectively, were presented to the college by George Freeman MP, Under-Secretary of State for Life Sciences, at the AoC Beacon Awards National Presentation Ceremony in London on Wednesday 4 February 2015.

For the UCAS Progress Award for Careers Education and Guidance, the college introduced a special ‘Careers College’ through partnerships with the County Council, the Economic Regeneration Unit, the regional university, employers, other colleges and schools. The

partnership, led by Weymouth College, sees an annual two-day event for Year 9 and 10 pupils consisting of workshops and a careers fair.

The Sports initiative builds on Weymouth College’s aim to be in the top 10% of further education colleges in England providing a high quality and inclusive sports curriculum for all levels and abilities. It works closely with partners to build on the legacy of hosting the sailing events in the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games and it aims to be recognised as a centre of excellence in meeting the priority skills needs of the local and regional community.

The voyage was designed to bring students from rural and urban locations together and saw the students step aboard the Tall Ship Pelican, which is part of the ‘Adventure Under Sail’ charity based in Weymouth.Funding of £5,300 was secured from the Big Lottery Fund, to enable the 12 students, who had challenging backgrounds to participate. We value our relationship with parents and guardians, and believe that a strong partnership between our students, their parents and guardians, and ourselves is vital for success. One of the advantages of college is that it is different to school. We offer an adult environment where students are encouraged to think independently, but we’re also committed to providing the structures and support systems needed to ensure that they work hard, succeed in their studies, and develop the personal and employability skills needed to give them an edge in a competitive job market.

To help build this partnership, we provide:

A dedicated contact for you Each student is allocated a personal tutor at the start of their study programme who will be monitoring learning and attendance throughout the year and will be your first point of contact.

Regular progress updates, accessible online from home A record of the one-to-one tutorials and termly reviews will be entered onto each student’s record which is accessible to parents at any time.

Regular feedback Parents’ evenings provide an opportunity for more detailed

conversations about progress, so you’re fully informed about progress and predicted results.

A safe and secure environment We issue all students with a photo ID badge, which they will need to access services and exams. Our students tell us they feel safe on campus and we have a dedicated safeguarding officer whose primary responsibility is ensuring our students continue to feel this way.

Benefits beyond the classroom We have a fantastic sports and activity programme for non-sports students run from our impressive facilities at the National Sailing Academy, Redlands Community Sports Hub and on-site. This helps build teamwork and leadership skills as well being great fun and good exercise. Combine this with impressive success rates that are rising faster than the national average, a comprehensive package of student support and financial assistance, and a redeveloped campus that provides an inspiring learning environment, it’s easy to see why Weymouth College is described as a high-performing and inclusive college. We’re very proud of this and believe it’s what sets us apart from others.

If you’re already employed or want to train on the job, an Apprenticeship or Work-Based Learning (WBL) qualification will allow you to get qualified, get paid and get a career all in one go. To do an Apprenticeship, you need to be able to demonstrate that you have the potential, motivation

and commitment needed to gain the high quality skills demanded by business and industry.

Although you do not need any formal qualifications to start, you shouldn’t be fooled into thinking they’re an easy option. Apprenticeships can be demanding, but also very rewarding.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Apprenticeships are a great way to gain valuable work experience and some of the most successful chefs and business people all started their careers as apprentices.

Before you start, you’ll undertake a selection test and will be interviewed by one of our assessors. The assessor will identify your suitability for the programme, so it’s important to demonstrate your commitment and motivation. If you’re not already in employment, we’ll put you forward for interviews with suitable employers. If we don’t have a suitable placement, we’ll advise you on how to look for and secure an Apprenticeship place for yourself.

Apprenticeship opportunities:

Accountancy, Brickwork, Business Administration, Carpentry & Joinery, Customer Services, Electrotechnical, Engineering, Hairdressing, Health & Social Care, Hospitality & Catering, Motor Cycle & Motor Vehicle, Plumbing, Retail,Sport, Stonemasonry, Beauty, Childcare.

How does it work? You’ll work with your employer to gain skills within the workplace. Most of your training will take place with your employer and college attendance will vary according to which level and which vocational area you’re in. A learning plan will be drawn up to determine what’s best for you as an individual and you will receive guidance and support from one of our assessors.

WORK-BASED LEARNING

Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) are ‘competence-based’ qualifications where you learn practical, work-related tasks which are designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge you need to do a job effectively. You can store and collate your achievements as you progress and study at pace that suits you. These flexible qualifications allow you to transfer credits from previous qualifications so you don’t need to re-take them and you’re even able to pull together achievements from different places.

How does it work?

CREDIT VALUE - tells you roughly how long it will take you to complete.

LEVEL - each unit ranges from entry through to level 8.

TITLE - tells you three things – how difficult it is, how long it will take and what it’s about.

SIZE – Award, Certificate and Diploma.

CONTENT – what the subject is about.

LEVELS OF STUDY

AWARD u 1 -12 credits (10 -120 hours of learning)

CERTIFICATE u 13 – 36 credits (130-360 hours of learning)

DIPLOMA u 37 or more credits (370 or more hours of learning)
