What’s Your Take?Take some time to reminisce at the Antique Auto Show on Sat Sep 11.

Tell us about your first car.

• Owner of Kings Hwy’s Jamaican Me Crazy, NINA RESES tooled

around in a Nova hatchback as a young driver. “I absolutely loved

it, except for the color. It was a really awful beige,” she said.

• An owner of Haddon Heights’ The Village Cheese Shop, BRETT HARRISON, enjoyed reminiscing about his first set of wheels. “I had a yellow convertible Volkswagen Karmann Ghia with a black ragtop ... We called it the Bumblebee,” he revealed.

• JACK WHITCRAFT, the owner of Haddonfield’s Candy Buffet, recalled his 1970 Cutlass. “It was green with a black top. I saved for it – and the insurance – and I picked it out. I remember it cost me $1000.”

• Haddonfield’s DOUG and MARIANNE BELLING had no

trouble remembering their first cars. Doug had a “Ford pick-up

truck with huge tires ... it got nine

miles to the gallon!” Marianne laughed, “I had a Ford Fairmont. It cost more to fix it than I bought it for.”

Their 17-year-old daughter, KENZIE, added that she will

“drive anything that moves” once she get

her licence. Kenzie is pictured holding

her beloved nephew ANDREW (1).

• Long-time Haddonfield resident ERINN CARMODY LEPPER, who now lives in Haddon Township, recalled her maroon Ford hatchback. “It was great ... it got me through college.” Erinn is pictured strolling down

Kings Highway with her daughter ADDISON (2).

• MELODIE SUNKETT, of Haddonfield’s CVM Wireless,

revealed that shortly after getting her licence she drove a

Pontiac Grand Am. “I used to have to time my trips carefully

because the engine was always overheating – it was the

worst!” she laughed.

Children and parents will be treated to sporting activities, arts and crafts, face painting, carnival games, and entertainers. Kidzfest will be bigger and better than ever in 2010. The entry fee will be $25; teams that raise additional funds will be eligible for prizes. Help Women and Children Now, the driving force behind Kidzfest, is a Haddonfield-based organization started by Lisa and Steve Hurly in honor of their son Stephen Michael who passed away in 2003. Stephen Michael was born prematurely and suffered from heart disease; he died when he was five-weeks-old after teaching his parents the true meaning of hope and love. Kidzfest 2010 will raise funds to benefit re-search in pediatric heart disease, pediatric can-cer, and premature birth. To learn more or to volunteer, e-mail [email protected].

What’s on at the LIBRARY

• BUdgetCUts=redUCedserViCe–To close a budget gap of nearly $73,000 created by reduced local and state funding for libraries, the Library Board has had to make some tough decisions, including the following: Staff will not receive raises. Longevity payments will be frozen at 2009 levels. The library will close at 6pm instead of 9pm on Fridays, beginning on September 10. In 2010, the library will close on 12 days from September thru December. These closed days will be furlough days for the staff (i.e. staff will not be paid). – October 11, Monday – Columbus Day – October 20, Wednesday – November 2, Tuesday – Election Day – November 11, Thursday – Veterans Day – November 26, Friday – Day after Thanksgiving – December 4, Saturday – December 10, Friday – December 20, Monday – December 21, Tuesday – December 22, Wednesday – December 23, Thursday – December 24, Christmas Eve Day (holiday) – December 25, Christmas Day (holiday) – December 26, Sunday The Library Board regrets any inconvenience for the pub-lic. Every effort was made to balance available funding and resources with the community’s needs for library services. A careful analysis was done of patterns of use and a survey of current practices in NJ libraries was conducted to arrive at this course of action. The library is better positioned now to meet 2011, which will also be a very difficult budget year.• NeWsChedUleoFFiNes–A new schedule of fines and fees will go into effect in September. Fines will go to 10¢ a day from 5¢ a day per item. There will be an amnesty from September 1 to 12 to give the public every opportunity to clear accounts before the new fines and fees begin.•BooKsale:sat25andsUN26–Now is the time to drop off donations of books and audio-visual items that are in good condition (no moldy items or textbooks, please) for the Friends of the Library Book Sale. Note: Tables will be set up under tents, so the sale will be on, rain or shine.

Ad Focus: Back to School

The Haddonfield Board of Education has appointed Dr. Richard P. Perry as its next Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Perry comes to Haddonfield with 27 years of experience in education, most recently as superintendent for the Palmyra School District. Before that, he served as principal of Palmyra High School. He graduated from Haddon Heights High School, began his career as a science teacher, and earned his doctoral degree in educational administration from Temple University in 2001. He lives in Haddonfield. In commenting on the appointment, Board of Education president Steve Weinstein said, “We are very excited that we have found someone who will continue the strong leadership that this District expects. What made Dr. Perry such a strong candidate was his extensive experience and acknowledged success as an educational leader with a solid background in the classroom.” He continued, “But it was also clear to us that he understands what this business is all about. In interviews, he always brought the focus back to what would be best for the kids,” Weinstein said. “That was very important to us, because in the Haddonfield School District, it is the students who come first.” Saying he was “tremendously excited and honored by this appointment,” Dr. Perry said he eagerly anticipates meeting the greater Haddonfield community. “For me, in a way, I am coming back home,” he said. “I am very honored that the board has put their faith in me and I am looking forward very much to working with the board, parents, teachers, administrators, students, and community.” The entire board of education interviewed a number of current, experienced superintendents before selecting Dr. Perry. After completing the process, the decision to appoint Dr. Perry was unanimous. He replaces Dr. Alan Fegley, who is leaving Haddonfield to become superintendent of the Phoenixville School District in Pennsylvania. Since he must give notice to the Palmyra Board of Education, Dr. Perry is not expected to assume his Haddonfield responsibilities until around October 1. He will be in the district frequently during August and September, however, to meet parents, the PTA leadership, and the administrators and teachers at each Haddonfield school. The new superintendent’s employment contract runs through June 30, 2014. His annual salary will be $153,000, a figure that is below the new maximum for a district of Haddonfield’s size, as set recently by Governor Christie. July 30, 2011

The Book Sale countdown Between relaxing on the beach and in your backyard, it’s quite possible that your big stack of “must read” books has dwindled. What to do? Head to the Library, of course! The Haddonfield Friends of the Library will hold its annual Book Sale on Sat Sep 25 from 10am to 3pm and Sun Sep 26 from 12n to 5pm. The sale will be held rain or shine on the Library lawn. Each year, the event features thousands of books, records, DVDs, CDs, and videos on a variety of subjects – all at rock-bottom prices. Make room for your new books by donating old ones. Donations of books and audiovisuals in good condition are currently being accepted at the Library. New textbooks will be accepted for sale – condensed books, magazines, and old text books will not be accepted. If you are interested in volunteering to help with the Book Sale or in joining the Friends of the Library, sign up at the library or send an e-mail to [email protected]. The Friends of the Library, through memberships and the Book Sale, provides special gifts that contribute to the excellence of library services. Friends’ funds are a supplement to, not a substitute for, the Library’s regular operating budget. hfol.org; 429-1304

Hello to Heights! For nearly twenty years, What’s On has been the “bible” (lower-case “b”) for those who live, work, play, worship, and visit in Haddonfield with respect to coming events and activities in the borough. Beginning with this issue of What’s On Haddonfield, we will also publish details of goings-on in Haddon Heights. We will continue to mail What’s On to homes and businesses in Haddonfield and to make it available at scores of high-traffic locations throughout the borough. And we will add dozens of convenient pick-up locations in Haddon Heights. On September 3, we will reconfigure What’s On Collingswood with respect to both content (by including free publicity for events and activities in Haddon Township) and distribution (both mail and pick-up). Planning an event? E-mail details to [email protected]. Thank you!

Join the fight It’s round seven in Charlie Clarke’s fight against Cystic Fibrosis (CF)! The seventh annu-al Charlie’s Fight Night will be held on Sat Sep 11 from 7pm to 12m at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The Charlie’s Fight Com-mittee cordially invites you to join them for the exciting evening. Charlie Clarke is an 8th grader at the Middle School. In most ways Charlie is just like his peers. However, since being diagnosed with CF about five years ago Charlie has had to adhere to strict treatment protocols in order to maintain his health. Charlie’s commitment to staying healthy has allowed him to succeed in both school and sports. Charlie and his parents, Lisa and Jim, began Charlie’s Fight shortly after Charlie was diagnosed. Since that time, the Charlie’s Fight Committee has raised over a million dollars to fight CF. Committee members hope to raise the funds needed to develop new medications that will enable Charlie, and others like him, to live happily and comfortably until a cure for CF is found. This year’s extravaganza is not to be missed. The evening will include cocktails, a silent auction, dinner, dancing, and entertainment. Some of Philadelphia’s most notable sports celebrities will be in attendance. If you would like to be a sponsor, donate an auction item, or purchase tickets, call the Delaware Valley Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at 610-325-6001. All proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. To learn more about CF and Charlie Clarke, go to charlieclarke.com.

Improve your karma The Camden County Food Shelf, which serves low-income seniors of Camden County, is in dire need of donations of non-perishable food. Food items such as canned vegetables, soup, crackers, cookies, cereal, condensed milk, canned beans, condiments, and boxes of instant mixes are welcome. Drop off your donations at Haddonfield’s Mabel Kay Senior Center (24 Walnut Street) Monday thru Friday between 9am and 4pm. For more information, call 354-8789.

Such character Do you cherish the charm and character that sets Haddonfield apart from other towns? Do you enjoy the historical significance of its buildings, neigh-borhoods, and streetscapes? Haddonfield is changing on a daily basis. With each tear down, another piece of history is lost forever. At the same time, green and open space is quickly disappearing. A group has been formed to monitor these developments, educate residents, and protect Haddonfield’s character. If you are concerned, join Preservation Haddonfield. Meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 7:30pm at the Mabel Kay Senior Center. To learn more, go to preservationhaddonfield.org or call 287-4665.
