EXPLAINING THE MYTHICAL LEPRECHAUNCeltic culture is ripe with legends and myths that help to entertain and explain the mys-teries of life. Among such lore are leprechauns, which are mythological figures that con-tinue to impart whimsy into St. Patrick's Day celebrations even now.

The word "leprechaun" is derived from the Irish lu chorpain, meaning "small body." Var-ious attributes have been used to describe leprechauns. While the origins and the historysurrounding leprechauns differ, one common thread is that these creatures are sur-rounded in magic. Some believed leprechauns were descendents of the Goddess Danuand the Tuatha De Danaan. They inhabited Ireland long before the Celts arrived, andwhen the Celts did come, brandishing iron swords that could penetrate the leprechauns'magic, leprechauns fled to underground abodes in the soil shielded by magical, hiddenentrances. Some say leprechauns still reside under the damp soil.

Other stories describe leprechauns as smart, devious creatures of fairy folk who werethe only fairies to have a profession other than cattle trading. Leprechauns were shoe-makers to the fairies who took the shape of men wearing green or red coats and hatsand participated in mischief. Leprechauns hoarded all of their gold coins in a pot undera rainbow. Catching a leprechaun was tricky, as these "wee folk," as they were often de-scribed in folk tales, were quite adept at remaining out of arm's reach. Should one becaptured by a human, folklore stated that the leprechaun must grant three wishes to earnhis release.

Some viewed leprechauns as serious sorts, keeping people away from sacred placesand helping to control people's behaviors. Historians believe this was one for leaders toestablish societal rules.

Descriptions of leprechauns and tales of their antics have survived in Ireland for cen-turies. When the Irish began emigrating to America during the Great Potato Famine, theybrought with them their mythology and stories. However, the tale of the leprechaun haschanged over time.

The Irish-American view of the leprechaun differed from the more traditional Irish view.Americans saw leprechauns as frivolous and silly. Leprechauns were depicted withbroad, pug noses and out-of-style ratty clothing. Many negative stereotypes Americansdirected at the swarms of Irish immigrants arriving in the United States were exemplifiedin the insensitive and, at times, hateful illustrations of leprechauns.

Leprechaun mythology has been alive and well in Ireland for more than a thousand yearsand will likely live on for centuries more.

Right about now the packaged dormant bulbs are arriving at the garden centers. Among them will be one of my favorites: the easy-to-grow lilies. I add more every year and am still amazed at how quickly the establish themselves and multiply. No wonder I love them so much. The lilium segment of the larger liliacae family contains some of the showiest flowers to be found anywhere and many of the thousands of cultivars thrive in our northern climate including two of my favorites; Asiatic and Oriental Hybrids. Asiatic hybrids are the first of the lilies to flower in early summer. They are also the most cold tolerant of all lilium forms. Asiatics also mature and reproduce rapidly, making them a rewarding choice for those just starting to dabble in lily growing. Asiatics are available in reds, whites, pinks, oranges, and yellows of every shade. Some feature solid colored petals while others are ornately speckled. Asiatics are not strongly scented but come in a range of sizes from 2’ to 5’! To find fragrance, we must sniff out the Oriental lily hybrids. Although not quite as winter hardy as their Asiatic cousins, many Oriental varieties are hardy in zones 4 and 5; hardy enough to thrive in our area. Oriental lilies will produce some of the largest, showiest flowers that you could expect this side of the tropics. A sub-group of the Oriental lilies are the Imperial hybrids. Imperial lilies produce large, sometimes huge flowers on sturdy stems. The Imperial Gold strain, for instance, produces 5” to 7” fragrant flowers on plants up to 7’ tall. That’s right, 7’! Those who travel the tropics and return whining that we can’t grow anything to compare should wake up and smell the lilies! All lilium varieties grow from bulbs. You’ll start seeing them in garden centers in March. They’ll be offered bare-root in plastic bags. Shop for them early so you can pick out the fattest ones from the group offered. The fatter the bulb, the better the plant. Plant your lilies as soon as the ground has thawed. Choose a location that is in full sun and make sure it’s a location that doesn’t puddle up after a heavy rain. Dig your holes about 3 times as deep as the bulb is tall. As usual, I’ll insist that you add bone meal to the planting hole. After enjoying your lilies for 3 or 4 years, you’ll notice that you’re getting more plants and flowers but they aren’t as tall as they used to be. This is a signal that they’re crowded and need to be dug and divided. This can be done in fall after frost or early spring when they’ve just started to sprout from the soil (adding more bone meal of course). There are many more lilies than the two mentioned here. They’re showy and very easy to grow making them a great choice for the novice or experienced gardener who wants to impress friends and neighbors. Another of my favorite bulbs available in packages this time of year are the irises. Irises generally flower early in the season so they really stand out as a harbinger of the warm days of summer to come. Like the lilies, irises are easy to grow and multiply quickly; attributes that make them welcome in my flowerbeds. The thousands of modern iris varieties are descendants of the approximately 150 species that are found growing naturally around the world. They grow from tuberous rootstock called rhizomes. In early spring (any day now) you’ll find them for sale in the garden center bare-root in plastic bags. When you’re shopping for iris rhizomes, don’t just look at the pretty picture on the package. Inspect the rhizomes through the bag. Feel them. They should be firm to the touch and show no signs of mold. Pick out the biggest and fattest of the bunch (a good argument for shopping early). The bigger the rhizome the better the better the flowers. If you can’t plant them right away, just store them in a cool spot until the ground thaws. Bearded and Dwarf Bearded Irises are most commonly found in bare root offerings. The popular Bearded Irises come in almost any color combination imaginable. They’ll range in height from about 15” to 36”. Mature Bearded Irises will have 3 to 5 flowers on each stem that opens in early spring. Dwarf Bearded Iris varieties grow to heights of no more than 8” or so. Bearded and Dwarf Bearded Irises prefer to be planted in full sun in soil that’s been enriched with plenty of organic matter. The area should be well drained to avoid rotting rhizomes. Later in spring, Japanese and Siberian irises will appear in the garden center as potted perennial plants rather than bare-root rhizomes. Japanese Irises are some of the tallest Iris groups with some cultivars getting as tall as 4’. Japanese irises can tolerate some light shade and perform best when planted in an area with damp acidic soil. Along a stream or a boggy pond bank would be a great spot for Japanese Irises. The easy-to-grow Siberian irises have been gaining in popularity. This is due to its ability to grow in locations that are drier than other irises prefer. Siberian Irises have narrower leaves and smaller flowers than other iris varieties. They’ll do best when planted in full sun or partial shade. Like other irises, Siberian Irises prefer acidic soil with lots of organic but are more forgiving of less-than-ideal conditions. Another iris will appear at the garden center late in spring in the display of plants for water gardening. Yellow Flag or Water Flag Irises grows to a height of about 3’. The flowers of this moisture loving iris are bright yellow sometimes highlighted with purple veins. The bluish green leaves contrast nicely with the bright yellow flowers. Variegated cultivars are available that have yellow striped leaves in spring that gradually turn green as summer progresses. Yellow Flag Irises should be planted in organic-rich, damp areas. It is a bog plant that will do poorly if planted where it dries out at all. Irises mature quickly so, be ready to divide them every few years. A group of irises that is overgrown will form a ring as the original plants die out in the center. Dig these clumps up in early spring and divide by chopping into several smaller clumps and replant. Make sure to freshen up the soil with more organic matter before replanting. Irises as a group are one of my favorites. They’re easy and prolific and, since they flower early in the season they’ll chase those winter blues away long before we see signs of life from most of our garden plants. Give them a try; you’ll be glad you did. Thanks for the read.

REAL INSIGHTS FROM REALTORS(NAPSI)—For many people, buying a home is a goal they aspire to achieve and oftenthe most significant financial decision they'll make in their life. If you're among them, consider this advice: Given the mass amounts of information, data and tools available,it's critical to work with a professional who can help you make sense of it all. During thehome buying or selling process, it's wise to follow these tips:

• Work with a local expert. Realtors are the most trusted resources for up-to-date, com-prehensive and accurate real estate information when it comes to navigating each stepof the complex home buyers process. More than four out of five recent home buyersand sellers used a real estate professional, according to the National Association of Re-altors.

• Learn about the area. Looking to move to a new neighborhood? Chances are you'reunfamiliar with some characteristics of the area, such as traffic patterns on busy streetsand the best schools within the district. Realtors have a finger on the pulse of each mar-ket where they do business. They're responsible for knowing the nuances to considerbefore buying a home and can leverage that expertise to help you.

• Seek accurate information. Many websites offer to help potential home owners find theperfect house. Some people have even suggested the Internet will eventually make buy-ing a home as easy as buying an airline ticket or a stock certificate. However, consumersoften complain that some of the information provided on these sites is either out of dateor inaccurate, creating confusion and frustration.

A Realtor, on the other hand, can provide valuable counsel, discuss listings, show youhomes in person, negotiate on your behalf and help you stay focused on the emotionaland financial issues that are most important. That may be one reason 88 percent of buy-ers in 2013 used a real estate agent, up from 69 percent in 2001.

Stay abreast of vehicle recall information

Driving a new vehicle off of the sales lot can be exciting. Brand-new vehicles are supposed tobe reliable and free from maintenance concerns. However, sometimes manufacturers recall avehicle, forcing drivers to visit the auto body shop sooner than they had hoped.

According to the Auto Insurance Organization, 390 million vehicles have been recalled sincethe National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act became law in 1966. Vehicles are recalledfor a variety of reasons, including poorly performing tires, faulty pieces of motor vehicleequipment and unsafe child safety seats. From 2009 to 2010, Toyota alone recalled 8.5 millioncars, the single largest recall in history.

It can be disconcerting to learn that your vehicle is being recalled. The uneasiness of driving apotentially dangerous vehicle coupled with the prospect of being without a car can be daunting.

Vehicle manufacturers must notify consumers that a recall is in place. But sometimes a vehicleowner may not be aware that there is a recall. In the event of large recalls, like the recent onesinvolving Toyota and Bridgestone Tires, the story makes the national news. But there are otherways drivers can stay current on recall information to ensure their personal safety.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an arm of the U.S. Department of Trans-portation, is a source of information on vehicle recalls. Their database dates back to 1966. TheNHTSA provides information on equipment recalls, entire vehicle recalls, child safety seat re-calls, and tire recalls. There also is information on school bus recalls.

Individuals can visit www.Recalls.gov and select the categories they want to check. To checkrecalls on a particular motor vehicle, select that category, enter the make and model as well asthe year, and the information about any recalls will appear.

Recall information can help save lives and prevent injuries. It is important to be aware of re-calls to ensure the vehicle you're driving is as safe as possible.

DID YOU KNOW?Insuring multiple vehicles and/or drivers on an auto insur-ance policy may prove cheaper than having each of thosedrivers and vehicles insured separately on multiple poli-cies. That's because insurers typically offer bulk rates topolicy holders willing to insure several vehicles and/or driv-ers on a single policy. But such discounts typically adhereto guidelines that dictate eligibility. For example, if thehead of a family wants to insure his or her children on thesame auto insurance policy he or she has, then those chil-dren typically must list their parents' home as their legalresidence. Blood relations also may influence eligibility formultiple driver policy discounts. In general, only blood rel-atives or relatives by marriage can benefit from multipledriver discounts. However, non-related motorists whojointly own a vehicle may be eligible for discounts.
