SUMMERTIME FUNFOR KIDS GUIDE
KEEPING KIDS ACTIVE ONCE THE SCHOOL YEAR ENDS In many ways, today's kids have busier schedules than any previous generation ofyoungsters. Many extracurricular activities, including sports, require a nearly year-round commitment, and the dual-income household has landed many kids in after-school programs where kids tend to their schoolwork or engage in various activitiesthat keep them from resting on their laurels.
But those busy schedules get a lot less hectic when the school year ends. Once schoolis out, kids used to a full schedule might find themselves with lots of time on theirhands. Though it's good for kids to squeeze in some rest and relaxation during theirsummer break, it's also important for kids to stay active so they don't develop poorhabits as the summer goes on. In addition, the American Psychological Associationnotes that kids who are physically active are more capable of coping with stress andtend to have higher self-esteem than kids who do not include physical activity as partof their regular routines.

SUMMER FUN CLOSE TO HOMESummer revelers often take to the skies, rails and waves to embark on a vacation ad-venture. With the kids out of school and relaxed hours at the workplace, individuals andfamilies generally find that summer is the ideal time to plan a getaway. For those whofind they don't have the funds this year, or simply prefer to stay closer to home, thereare likely many different local events to enjoy instead. Many people will be making this summer the year of the staycation. With the averageprice of gasoline hovering around the $4 mark, according to the AAA Auto Group, youmay be among the individuals planning to keep vacation and weekend activities limitedto a certain radius around your house. What many people seldom realize is that thewarm-weather season is a prime time for local offerings from different organizations inthe community -- many of which are low-cost and nearby.Oftentimes, all it takes is thumbing through the "Where to Go" section of the newspaperto find a host of different community offerings happening in the weeks to come. Chancesare your neighborhood is hosting one or more of these different types of communityevents.

occasionally approach strangers and smile at them too! He is mellow but does likes to play. He loves walks and
car rides. Yukon is housebroken and gets along well with most very small male dogs and with female dogs of any
size. Yukon will not be placed in a home with cats, rabbits or other small house pets. He would prefer to live in a
home with a fenced in yard. Like all HOPE pets, Yukon is neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations.. Yukon’s foster Mom says, “he is a foster home’s dream. And that is the
absolute truth!” He’s pretty mild mannered and gets along with other polite dogs. Yukon’s feline foster-sis is teaching him how to live with cats. At 9 years old, Yukon is eligible for our Senior to Senior program (adoption fee waived
Zoe
When she is not snuggling with you or sitting on your lap, she becomes a great hunter, chasing her squeaky
mouse or searching for bugs to conquer. She also enjoys having dinner with you; she will share her food with you and expects you to share your food with her. If you are looking for an affectionate companion that will protect you from insects and will occasionally dine with you Zoe is for you! Like all HOPE cats, Zoe is spayed, up to date
on all vaccinations, worming and tested negative for Feline Leukemia and FIV.
CharlieCharlie is a 1-1/2 year old charming black and white male cat. He has a cute mustache we thought looked like Charlie Chaplin, hence his name. He has an impressive purr, kittenish meow chirp and is always reaching out to be petted. Charlie was abandoned at a farm,
barely surviving having little to eat and inadequate shelter. He was as starved for affection as he was for food. In his foster home he has become an avid lap cat and a faithful com-
is entertained for hours. Won’t you please give Charlie what he deserves, a warm home with the regular meals, a comfy bed to sleep in and plenty of toys to play with?
