This is a great time of year for gardeners. In spite of the sluggish start, recent warmth has our gardens leaping to life . There are home grown flowers in vases in the living room, dining room and even the kitchen. While the perennial flowers follow their blooming cycle with amazing precision, the annuals have entered their “frenzy mode” as the days gradually begin to shorten. I’m always amazed at how quickly they grow as summer wanes. My annual flowers were dawdled through May and early June we had. We usually get a break from mowing the lawn in July. Not this year. I’ve had to mow the lawn every week thanks to well-timed thunderstorms. I don’t mind really since a nice green lawn makes such a beautiful “frame” for the flowerbeds. I’d much rather spend my time mowing than dragging the hose around trying to keep everything alive. Then there’s the bounty of berries, fruit and vegetables that we’re starting to enjoy this year. The strawberries this year came and went quickly but, the birds and I have also been enjoying all the blackberries and raspberries that are appearing in such abundance. A couple of years ago we planted some thornless raspberries and we’re thrilled with the huge crop they’ve provided. It took a couple of years for them to get going but they’ve really start pumping out the. All around town I see that the various members of the hibiscus are starting to put on their show. Later, this show will include althea, The Rose of Sharon. It seems that althea are gaining in popularity lately. While mine are double flowering, I greatly admire the single flowering varieties that I’m starting to see more of. Their flower closely resembles that of the tropical hibiscus that is so popular in the south. These single flowering altheas weren’t available when I planted my hedge 10 years ago or I would have surely opted for one of those. Rose of Sharon is available in a wide range of colors but tend toward the reds and lavenders. There are even varieties that have a bi-colored flower and there’s a nice white that I’ve see as well. While the althea is a woody shrub, there’s another hardy hibiscus that is perennial in nature (it dies to the ground in winter) that is well worth commenting on. Like althea or Rose of Sharon, the mallow hibiscus is a relative of the tropical hibiscus although the flowers are much larger. The showy mallow hibiscus will grow from the ground to a height of 4’ to 6’ during each growing season. Mallow hibiscus flowers range in color from white to deep purple and encompass every shade of pink in between. As if this weren’t enough, the flowers can be as large as a dinner plate! I know you’ve seen these around town since they are in flower right now. A lot of folks don’t realize that this plant is hardy in our area and with easily survive over winter to return larger and showier each year. Each of the giant flowers that mallow hibiscus produces will only remain open for one day. Fortunately, they produce plenty of buds so the show goes on for at least a couple of weeks and even longer for a well-established clump. If you plant either of these northern members of the hibiscus family, you’ll need to be patient in spring. Neither the woody shrub althea nor the perennial mallow hibiscus will show any sign of life until spring is well under way. I usually see no sign of life from either in my yard until the lilacs are in bloom. That’s when the first leaves appear on my althea and the mallow hibiscus is just poking a shoot up from the soil. They are amazing plants and easily deserve a place in your garden. Thanks for the read.

REAL INSIGHTS FROM REALTORS(NAPSI)—For many people, buying a home is a goal they aspire to achieve and oftenthe most significant financial decision they'll make in their life. If you're among them, consider this advice: Given the mass amounts of information, data and tools available,it's critical to work with a professional who can help you make sense of it all. During thehome buying or selling process, it's wise to follow these tips:

• Work with a local expert. Realtors are the most trusted resources for up-to-date, com-prehensive and accurate real estate information when it comes to navigating each stepof the complex home buyers process. More than four out of five recent home buyersand sellers used a real estate professional, according to the National Association of Re-altors.

• Learn about the area. Looking to move to a new neighborhood? Chances are you'reunfamiliar with some characteristics of the area, such as traffic patterns on busy streetsand the best schools within the district. Realtors have a finger on the pulse of each mar-ket where they do business. They're responsible for knowing the nuances to considerbefore buying a home and can leverage that expertise to help you.

• Seek accurate information. Many websites offer to help potential home owners find theperfect house. Some people have even suggested the Internet will eventually make buy-ing a home as easy as buying an airline ticket or a stock certificate. However, consumersoften complain that some of the information provided on these sites is either out of dateor inaccurate, creating confusion and frustration.

A Realtor, on the other hand, can provide valuable counsel, discuss listings, show youhomes in person, negotiate on your behalf and help you stay focused on the emotionaland financial issues that are most important. That may be one reason 88 percent of buy-ers in 2013 used a real estate agent, up from 69 percent in 2001.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: TAKE FIVE AND CHECK YOUR TIRES

(NAPSI)—Keep your family and vehicle safe as you prepare for your summer travels.

Temperatures are rising and summer road trip season is here. It is imperative for mo-torists to stay on top of tire maintenance during summer months because as tempera-tures start to increase, so do the frequency of tire blowouts. Maintaining proper tirepressure not only improves road safety, it gives motorists the most from their tires. Im-properly inflated tires lead to decreased steering and braking control as well as excessivetire wear and fuel consumption.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, only 19 percent of con-sumers keep their tires properly inflated. Improper tire care contributes to about 200 fa-talities each year. The agency also estimates that about 11,000 tire-related crashes occurannually.

To get the most from your tires this summer, here are five important maintenance tipsfrom the world’s largest independent tire and wheel retailer, Discount Tire:

1. Get Pressure Right—Low tire pressure can decrease fuel economy. Tires may loseup to one pound PSI (per square inch) of air pressure per month. The specific inflationpressure number may be found on the vehicle placard located inside the driver’s door.Don’t forget to check trailer tires. Checking the tire pressure for boat, travel and utilitytrailers is as important as for your car or truck. Make it a point to check tire pressureevery month, using the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure.

2. Stay Sticky with Tread—Lack of tread affects the tire’s ability to stick to the road, es-pecially in wet conditions. Make sure tires don’t have uneven wear, which indicatessomething is wrong with the tire. High or low spots or unusually smooth areas may de-crease traction and increase the risk of road accidents. Road trippers should also checktire tread depth by using the “penny test.” Insert a penny upside down into the tread. Ifyou see Abe Lincoln’s entire head, it’s time to replace the tire.

3. Rotate Often—Regular rotation helps achieve uniform tire wear and improves roadperformance. Tires rotated every 6,000 miles have longer life and will help maximizeyour tire investment.

4. Don’t Forget the Spare—Don’t get stuck with a flat tire in the middle of nowhere anddiscover that your spare is also flat. Check your spare tire on a regular basis as youwould your other tires.

5. Don’t Overload—Overloading your vehicle’s or trailer’s carrying capacity is dangerousand can lead to tire failure. Handling, control and braking are also negatively impacted.Check your owner’s manual for load capacity specifications prior to packing your vehiclebefore vacation.

Remembering these tips and taking five minutes each month to inspect your tires willgo a long way in keeping you and your passengers safe. Discount Tire offers free tireair pressure inspections, available at more than 900 locations nationwide. To learn moreabout tire safety, visit www.discounttire.com.
